New Identity Theft Prevention Tip

Business Etiquette: The 24-Hour Rule

One of the more recent scams for stealing your information and identity is called web browser “tabnapping” from “tab” and “kidnapping”. The criminal secretly changes already open browser tabs. All major browsers on Windows and Mac OS X are vulnerable to the attack. Most people keep multiple tabs open, often for long periods. They trust that the contents and label of a tab are safe so tabnapping may become the next big thing in identity theft. Never log-in or fill anything out on a tab that just popped up or you did not open yourself. Look at the URL in your browser’s address bar before filling in any form or giving out any personal information.

Occupations Seen, Jobs Made, Positions Filled

The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce conducted a job shadowing program over a two week period. More than 80 children and over 60 employers participated. Juniors from S.S. Seward, Tuxedo Baker High School and Warwick Valley High School participated. Students were surveyed as to their interests and matched with prospective employers. Annual Sidewalk Sale July 9, 10, 11th

The Warwick Merchants Guild has been hosting the Annual Sidewalk Sale for well over ten years and running. This yearly summer event is always something the “locals” look forward to. It has been an opportunity to pick up a bargain or just get out to “see and be seen”. The many participating merchants use this event as a way to clear out old stock, chipped and irregular pieces, promote new items with incentive prices and also as a networking vehicle to meet new customers and greet old ones. As in the past, the Guild is inviting all area religious, civic, and non-profit organizations to participate. “I would love to see one of our local priests in a dunking booth!”, quipped Tim Mullally of Style Counsel, one of the event chairs. As in the past, there will also be live music. This year “Laramma” is back on the Railroad Green, Saturday at 3:00 pm followed by the “E’lissa Jones Band” at 6:00 pm. Both acts are part of the Village Summer Music Series. New additions to the Annual Sidewalk Sale this year will be a contingent of local bed-and-breakfasts set up on the Railroad Green to promote their establishments and give away a free night stay. Pennings Farm Market will be onboard with a sampling of their bounty. These are real community days. We encourage all to come out and have a great time Friday July 9th, Saturday July 10th, and Sunday July 11th. Anyone interested in participating may contact Tim Mullally at Style Counsel, (845) 986-9588.

From the Caboose by Executive Director Michael Johndrow

As a relative newcomer to the Warwick area, I now realize why it is such a great place to live and work. Everyone supports each other, with the many different entities working well together. The Village and Town for instance, cooperate through the efforts of Mayor Michael Newhard and Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton. The Warwick Merchants’ Guild is constantly looking for creative new ways to promote business in our area. The Village, Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market and our Historical Society frequently coordinate with local artists and musicians. Local restaurants often share resources and offer area events such as the Taste of Warwick and Restaurant Week. I was hired three years ago, and one item on my to-do list was to encourage cooperation among the communities of Florida, Greenwood Lake and Warwick. As part of that effort, my goal is to have each community maintain its own identity while allowing us to assist in promoting their individual activities. I am continuously encouraging all businesses in the Warwick Valley to join our Chamber. My mantra is: there is strength in numbers, so let us come together for the purpose of supporting one another. So far, this has worked admirably. We are growing! Our membership today is just short of 500 with 60 new members since January. In this year alone, we have had twenty ribbon cuttings. Let me list some of the events of this past quarter starting with April 3rd. The 2010 Annual Business Expo; thank you Diane Massey and committee. Operation Clean Sweep; thank you Lisa Montanaro and Girl Scout Heather Storms. In May the Warwick Valley Farmers’ Market opened for the season. June, the Visitor’s Guide (formerly Tourism Guide) was made available for distribution; thank you Janine Dethmer. 40,000 copies have been printed for distribution. It’s also available for download from our website. Members, your dues for this year were due this quarter. A final reminder will be sent to you (we will try to contact all unpaid businesses in the near future) before we remove all unpaid businesses from the Chamber website. Thank you Chamber Members, and I look forward to another bright quarter.

Warwick represented at Primetime Emmy® Awards

Lisa’s Cookie Shop was invited to include its products in the 2010 Official Emmy Award Show gift bags. The ‘swag bags’ were distributed to all presenters, winners and attendees at the award show which aired June 27, 2010. “We are extremely proud to represent Warwick and to introduce our products at such a high-profile event,” said Lisa Ciriello of Distillery Road. Established in 2004, Lisa’s Cookie Shop is a family-owned and operated bakery specializing in all-natural, gourmet cookies, bars and granola. Products are available online at lisascookieshop.com, as well as at a variety of NY-, NJ- and CT-based specialty markets.

Lean, Green, and a Main Street Cornerstone Yesterdays has become a fixture on Warwick’s Main Street these past 25 years and is still going strong. Yesterdays’ original menu is a staple among customers of all ages, and is always made interesting with a daily specials menu. At the suggestion of Drs. Martini and Pennings, the restaurant has recently added a lean and green Medifast-style menu. Yesterdays Proprietor John Christison

has seen a lot of restaurants come and go, change hands, but Yesterdays has stood the test of time. He offers fine food and spirits at reasonable prices along with great service in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. John and his staff would like to thank the Chamber members, their friends and families, for their support throughout the years. Open 7-days-aweek for lunch & dinner on 29 Main St.

Historical Society of Town of Warwick News There are quite a few things happening in and around Lewis Park in the center of the village this summer. It’s the 200th birthday of three of the buildings the Society owns; The Old School Baptist Meeting House (OSBMH), the 1810 House, and the Ketchum House on Church Street. To kick off the celebrations, we are having a birthday party on July 24th, our ‘George Washington Day’. It begins at 6pm—bring a covered dish. During the next month, there will be different activities in Lewis Park,

including an Antique Appraisal Day on the 7th of August from 10-2 pm. Other events are musical evenings, a cupcake day (where you decorate your own), and a day to build and/or paint a birdhouse. Check www.warwickhistoricalsociety. org for specifics. All this leads up to our big fundraiser, “Under the Tent” on the 28th of August. A silent auction, raffle, and live music accompanied by scrumptious foods put together by members and restaurants, all take place under the tent. It’s from 6-9 pm.

Of course Apple ranked number-one overall as the Most Admired Company, but Automatic Data Processing, better known as ADP, is Fortune’s #1 “Most Admired Financial Data Services Company for 2010”, up from placing number-two last year. One out of every six employees nationwide is paid by Automatic Data Processing. ADP Payroll & HR Solutions help small business owners reduce liability, control costs, and stay in compliance with the constantly changing state and federal labor laws. After all, taking on liability, filing payroll taxes, and maintaining compliance probably aren’t the reasons you went into business. ADP helps put your focus back on what’s most important—growing your bottom line. Contact Zach Kruk for a no-risk, potentially high-reward consultation, (845) 545-5734, or [email protected].

An optimizer or optimization involves the strategic placement of search terms on your website so that prospects can actually find you when they Google. Without SEO your website is merely an online brochure. Write On Point, currently working with the Chamber to improve its Internet visibility, played an integral part in the Chamber’s new website build. After a web visibility audit,

the SEO/Internet Marketing company advised the Chamber that the member listings on the previous site could not be found in a search because of the website’s format. This discovery was an impetus for the new website launched last month, which addresses that problem.

Go, Go EXPO!

The Chamber Connection 7

The Third Annual Warwick Valley Chamber Business to Business / Business to Community EXPO is now just a memory, but what at a memory it was! Held April 3rd, this year’s event had the largest attendance ever with nearly 1,100 visitors previewing 100 exhibitors. Those in attendance appreciated the diversity of businesses, the guest speakers, Warwick Valley Farmer’s Market, lunch with Pennings Harvest Grill and the fun activities for children. An after-event survey, conducted for the first time, provided valuable feedback from roughly half of the exhibitors. Thankfully the biggest concern was the lack of early morning coffee (only due to a small snafu in communication). Don’t worry. We hear you loud and clear and will have plenty on-hand next year, along with bagels and muffins.

A big thank you to our sponsors: WRG —Sanford Insurance, Price Chopper, WVT Communications, Bon Secours Charity Health Systems, WTBQ Radio, and KDF Marketing. The committee deserves a round of applause as well: Sherry Bukovcan, Janine Dethmers, Garrett Durland, Nanette Hoey, Michael Lake, Diane Massey Event Coordinator, and Doug Stage.

Annie Rabbitt, our Assemblywoman from the 97th District of Orange and Rockland Counties, is accompanied by EXPO Event Coordinator Diane Massey, Mayor Michael Newhard, Supervisor Michael Sweeton, and Executive Director Michael Johndrow.

Results from the Expo Survey

When asked, “What was the most important benefit received from exhibiting at EXPO?”, 87.8% of the respondents indicated “Greater visibility in the community”, followed by 71.4% saying, “Networking with the business community”.

When asked, “On a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (completely agree), please rate your answer to; ‘I was pleased with my booth placement and its amenities’”, 57% completely agreed. When asked, “What was it that exhibitors had at their booth that they found helpful?”, 85% said two or more people manning the booth, followed by 77.1% choosing a large marketing banner, followed by 64.6% indicating a giveaway or contest.

When asked to complete, “Since the show, you have…”, 71.4% reached out individually to people met at the show, 55.1% made one or more sales directly related to the contacts at the show. Other feedback under review is the exchange of money for products and services, better signage, more greeters at the entrance, allowing exhibitors to select placement of booth as they register, more family activities, and adding exhibitors to Chamber website. Addressing one comment about more yard signs coming in from New Jersey, there is a sign ordinance against it.

Debby Haney of Telltale Signs

Stand out from the competition

Telltale Signs makes storefront, commercial, and vehicle signs that work to increase revenue for clients. Well-designed signs are key to a two-part “branding” approach: businesses need to catch potential clients’ attention in a way that is memorable, and then consistently reinforce that impression using the same basic image. These impressions build up to equal an effective presence in the target market. Telltale Signs works with businesses of all sizes to make sure their signage is working for them, using computer-generated vinyl lettering or fine hand painting and gold leaf. Call Debby Haney at Telltale Signs (845) 986-1746 to make your business stand out from the crowd.
