Montrachet Fine Wine Merchants - 020 7821 1337

2012 BURGUNDY - small in quantity, big in quality 2012 has brought forth a small crop of high quality wines. The whites are consistently fine and the reds, whilst more variable, are, at the top level, excellent, characterful wines. In contrast to 2011 which got off to a great start, the 2012 growing season commenced slowly with below average temperatures throughout April and May. There was a little late frost that caused problems in Chassagne-Montrachet but the real loss of volume was the result of continued bad weather during the flowering period in June. This affected the whole of Burgundy from Chablis in the north to Mâcon in the south. The generally wet weather continued until the middle of July and tested the resolve and skill of the vignerons. There was a lot of mildew around and less conscientious growers lost much of their crop. There was also a series of hailstorms which principally affected the area between Pommard and Chassagne-Montrachet. The premiers crus between Puligny and Meursault were hit on three occasions, the most devastating on August 1st. Yields in many of these crus are as low as 15hl/ha, a third of the usual amount. Fortunately the weather gradually improved and the second half of July, August and the allimportant run up to the vintage were progressively warmer and drier. Indeed by the second week of September, the ground was very dry and producers were eagerly anticipating a few showers to coax the fruit to final maturity. The harvest started the third week of September in the Mâconnais and quickly followed in the Côte d’Or and Chablis as the fine weather and small crop had ensured a final burst of ripening. The fruit was in healthy condition with good levels of both sugar and acidity and the low yields had contributed a natural concentration of flavour. As a result, the whites are rich and characterful with good but not excessive alcohol levels, ripe fruit flavours, fine balancing acidity and an intensity and length on the finish rarely seen in 2011. It is particularly good in Chablis, where yields were often excessive in 2011, and in the Côte d’Or where many of the lesser villages (Saint Aubin, Saint Romain, Savigny, PernandVergelesses) took full advantage of the fine late summer weather. The reds are more variable as the difficulties with hail and mildew necessitated a strict sorting of the fruit but the best growers picked perfectly ripe, healthy grapes that have given elegant, medium-bodied wines that show great charm and personality. The lack of extreme heat during the summer has meant that the accent is on red rather than black fruits but overall these are high quality pinot noir wines that will be accessible when young and have the balance to age gracefully. As already mentioned, the great difficulty is the volume produced with many top estates harvesting at best half a normal crop. Jean-Marc Pillot made three barrels of his Chenevottes instead of his usual eight, Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau put all of what little fruit he picked in his premier cru Blagny into his village Meursault and Jacques Carillon was storing sixty empty barrels in his cellar when I visited him last summer. Fortunately we have good allocations from all our regular suppliers but please let us know what you’d like as soon as possible as inevitably many wines will run out quickly this year.

Domaine Billaud-Simon Bernard Billaud, together with consultant oenologue Jean-Pierre Lédé and wine-maker Julien Martins, make the finest unoaked Chablis. The 2012 harvest took place between October 2nd and October 9th and gave wines that are richer and more concentrated than 2011. Bernard Billaud compares them to the best 2008s or 2010s, both the product of cool summers when acidities were high. White

Billaud-Simon own 2ha of Petit Chablis on the plateau just above grand cru Les Clos. This has nothing to do with most Petit Chablis produced on the outskirts of the region. Lovely, fresh, floral aroma. Crisp and fresh with a fruity finish. Drink 2014-2016.

Chablis

BS2

The domaine’s vines are all adjacent to the premiers crus of Vaillons, Montmains and Montée de Tonnerre. This is one of the very finest village Chablis with fine fruit and crisp, minerally texture. Drink 2014-2017.

Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

BS3

Vaillons gives one of the fruitiest, most aromatic premier crus. This has a lovely, harmonious texture and masses of fresh ripe fruit. Delicious already but with the balance and concentration to age gracefully. Drink 2014-2018.

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu

BS4

One of the best premiers crus on the right bank of the river Serein which flows through the heart of Chablis. The purer kimmeridgian soil gives a full-bodied, intense wine with more bite and acidity. Classic Chablis. Drink 2015-2018.

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

BS5

Splendid premier cru adjoining the eastern end of the grands crus and benefitting from the same soil and southerly exposition. Lovely, complete wine combining the fruit of Vaillons with the structure of Mont de Milieu. Drink 2015-2018.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

BS6

Generally considered the finest grand cru, of which Billaud-Simon own 0.44ha. Planted in 1966. Fermented in stainless steel, this has wonderful freshness and purity of fruit and a fantastic, mineral character. Drink 2016-2020.

Samuel Billaud Samuel Billaud is one of Chablis’ finest wine-makers. For twenty years he was responsible for the superb quality of wine at the family estate, Domaine BillaudSimon. In 2009, he branched out and turned his hand to a new project, the identification of the region’s greatest terroirs and the realisation of their full potential. In 2012, by harvesting relatively early between September 24th and October 3rd, he produced wines with classic minerality as well as fine, ripe, fruit flavours. White

From three different parcels. 25 year old vines in Les Pargues, just south of Montmains gives finesse and minerality. 60 year old vines in Les Cartes sandwiched between the 1ers Crus of Vaillons and Montmains give structure and depth and the 35 year old vines in Chapelots just below Montée de Tonnerre add class and complexity. The result is quintessential Chablis. Crisp and aromatic with lovely, generous texture and long finish. Drink 2014-2016.

Chablis 1er Cru Fourneaux

SB2

From 40 year old vines in the lesser known premier cru of Fourneaux. The grapes are all grown organically and the sunny, south-facing slope gives a ripe, honeyed wine with a softer texture and generous finish. Drink 2014-2016.

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu

SB3

Fermented 80% in stainless steel and 20% in barrel, this has wonderful, intense flavour and firm, full-bodied structure. Drink 2015-2018.

Chablis 1er Cru Monteé de Tonnerre

SB4

Same vinification as the Mont de Milieu, this has an even closer-knit texture and a fantastic, opulent flavour. Finishes rich and long. Drink 2015-2019.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

SB5

Just one 450 litre barrel made. The wine spent 6 months in oak, followed by 6 months in stainless steel. Powerful rich wine, tremendous aroma, lovely spicy flavour and incredible length on the finish. Drink 2015- 2020.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

SB6

Again only one 450 litre barrel made. This is even more intense than the Preuses with fantastic freshness of flavour and superb mineral character. Drink 2015-2020.

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet Jean-François Bordet can trace his family’s roots in Maligny back to 1590. The estate now comprises 16 hectares situated on the right bank of the Serein where the rich kimmeridgian soils give the wines the minerality so typical of great Chablis. A new stainless steel winery has been installed and quality has improved greatly over the last few years. The unusual horizontal fermentation vats give the wine more lees contact during maturation adding to the complexity of this pure, unoaked chardonnay. Jean-François Bordet

Domaine Gérard Thomas et Filles The day-to-day running of this fine domaine is now in the highly capable hands of Gérard’s two daughters, Anne and Isabelle. Their technical training has resulted in fresher, purer wines with more precise flavours. All the wines are now barrel fermented and the quality of the Bourgogne Chardonnay and Saint Aubin Champ Tirant has improved tremendously as a result. The grapes were harvested from September 22nd to September 29th with at least 12.5% potential alcohol and yields are down by 20-30% depending on the cru. White

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Like many estates in Chassagne, Jean-Marc was hit by frost at the beginning of May, poor flowering in June and hail three times in June, August and September. By performing an early effeuillage in June he was able to maintain his fruit in perfect condition and the small crop was naturally concentrated and fully ripe. The result is a splendid range of rich, honeyed whites with a lovely balance of ripe fruit and crisp acidity. The difficulty is the quantity. Jean-Marc made less than half his usual quantity of ChassagneMontrachet. All the 2012s will be aged for 18 months (12 months in barrel followed by 6 months in tank) before being bottled in spring 2014.

Domaine Vincent et François Jouard Frost, poor weather at flowering and hail on August 1st all took their toll on the yields in 2012. Fortunately the quality is excellent and the Jouard brothers decided to sell fewer grapes to the Beaune négociants so the overall volumes that we have available are not dissimilar to last year. François has also decided to reduce the amount of Vosges oak in the cellar buying more Allier casks particularly for the softer, fruitier wines such as Champs Gains. François Jouard

Domaine Alain Chavy It’s now ten years since Alain split the family domaine with his brother Jean-Louis and they continue to make very different styles of Puligny. Alain likes to pick early whilst the grapes retain good acidity and age the wine for eighteen months in barrel in the new underground cellar he built behind his house at the southern end of the village. It’s one of the few underground cellars in Puligny and one of the coldest so the wines develop more slowly and remain tight and reserved when first bottled. After a few years bottle age, however, they develop fine, complex flavours and are amongst the best in the village.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy Jean-Louis makes a more forward, fruitier style of Puligny than his brother Alain. The wines are softer and rounder with lower acidity and are bottled earlier in November or December, fourteen months after the harvest. Jean-Louis started picking on September 18th and found the grapes ripe and healthy with higher sugar levels than in 2011. The yields, however, are much reduced with Perrières the worst hit at only 40% of a normal crop as a result of hail on August 1st.

The cellar looked full last summer but there were sixty barrels lying empty awaiting the 2013 harvest. The 2012s were all picked between September 17th and 22nd at potential alcohol levels of 12.5 to 13% and will be aged for eighteen months before being bottled in March 2014. Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau

32 of the estate’s 35 plots of vines suffered hail damage in 2012, the only three parcels being spared being those of Bourgogne Chardonnay. The Meursault Grands Charrons was the worst hit with yields down to 12hl/ha in some plots. The fruit was extremely concentrated as a result with both sugar and acidity levels higher than in 2011. The grapes were healthy and Jean-Baptiste’s 2012s are a great success combining the rich flavours of 2009 with the tight structure of 2010. Most of the wines are spending a second winter in cask and will be bottled in January or February.

Domaine Yves Boyer-Martenot Vincent Boyer has taken over the running of this famous Meursault domaine from his father Yves but this estate continues to make rich, honeyed Meursault that drinks really well relatively young. Two hailstorms reduced the volume by more than 50% but the naturally concentrated grapes needed no chaptalisation as a result. Vincent believes in bottling his wines after twelve months in barrel so all these 2012s were bottled in September just before the 2013 harvest. They are already showing well with lovely, honeyed fruit flavours matched by fine, crisp acidity.

Puligny-Montrachet Les Reuchaux

Crisper and leaner than the domaine’s Meursault wines, this is a little more reserved and has fine acidity and minerality. Needs a year to open up but will be fine. Drink 2015-2017.

Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières

YB5

Rich and juicy, the Boyer’s finest premier cru in 2012 combining the richness of Charmes with the minerality of Perrières. Drink 2015-2017.

Domaine Saumaize-Michelin Roger and Christine Saumaize run the finest estate of Vergisson in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. All 28 parcels that make up their 14 hectare domaine are cultivated biodynamically. The wines are fermented and aged in barrel for twelve to fifteen months. The 2012 crop was much reduced due to poor weather at flowering time but the small berries gave intensely flavoured juice as a result. Roger places the 2012 harvest as lying between 2009 and 2010 in style displaying the ripe, honeyed flavours of 2009 whilst retaining the mineral acidity of 2010. White

Domaine Parisse This estate is based in Fuissé but owns land in the Saint Véran, Pouilly-Vinzelles and Pouilly-Fuissé appellations. Owned and run by Christophe Thibert and his sister Sandrine, the wines display immense charm and personality. Vinification is in a mixture of small oak barrels, larger demi-muids and foudres as well as a number of stainless steel vats. All the wines show soft, generous textures and are delicious to drink young whilst retaining fine ageing ability. One of the highlights of their cellar comes from the parcel of vines known as Les Longeays which makes the finest wine of the lesser-known and undervalued appellation of Pouilly-Vinzelles.

Domaine Stéphane Aladame

Stéphane Aladame

Stéphane Aladame created his domaine from scratch at the age of 18. With no historical family holdings he started with just under 3 hectares which has since been extended to 7.5 hectares of which 6 hectares are in the appellation of Montagny 1er Cru. Since the start of the domaine, Stéphane has been committed to lutte raisonée combining traditional respect for the land with up to date methods. No synthetic chemical pesticides or herbicides are used and interference is kept to a minimum. Stéphane takes the oldest vines in four of his premiers crus (Platières, Gouresses, Las and Creux de Beaux Champs) and vinifies them separately. Half the juice is fermented in a stainless steel vat and the other half in oak barrels of which 20% are new. The result is a stylish, open, aromatic wine showing pure chardonnay fruit flavours, crisp balancing acidity and a long, fresh finish. Château de Chamirey

Amaury, Aurore & Bertrand Devillard

The Devillard family own one of the finest estates of Mercurey. Covering 37 hectares, much of which is premier cru including the monopoles of La Mission and Les Ruelles, the château is unusual in producing fine white as well as red Mercurey. The Devillards regularly declassify as much as 30% of the production from premier cru to village wine, a fact that explains the consistently high quality of the Château de Chamirey wines.

It was purchased in 2010 by the Devillard family who had previously managed the estate for the Thenard family since 1991 during which time they looked after both the vineyards and the wine-making. Beautiful, fresh pinot noir aromas on the nose, very precise and pure. Fresh and generous on the palate, this is extremely well focused with fine balance of fruit, tannin and acidity. Domaine de La Pousse d’Or

Patrick Landanger

This 17ha estate has been owned since 1997 by Patrick Landanger. The domaine had land solely in Volnay and Santenay but Patrick augmented the estate with vines in Corton and Puligny and in 2009 purchased Domaine Moine-Hudelot with its glittering array of premiers and grands crus in Chambolle-Musigny and Morey Saint Denis. The cellar behind and under the house has been extended and now comprises a six-level facility which enables the wines to be moved throughout their élevage entirely by gravity thus avoiding the need for pumping. In 2012 the volumes are much reduced as a result of poor weather at flowering time and summer hail in Volnay.

Domaine Marquis d’Angerville After small crops in 2010 and 2011, Volnay was badly hit by hail in both 2012 and 2013. As a result, the domaine has pitifully small quantities to offer this year and wines such as Clos des Ducs will only be available in individual numbered magnums. Despite this bad news on the quantity front, the quality of the wines remains as high as ever with the 2012s showing the natural concentration you would expect from such low yields. Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets

The stony soil here gives a beautifully fresh style of Volnay with masses of red fruit on the nose. For many years after much of the vineyard was replanted, the wine was lighter but the vines are now over thirty years old and the wine has greater structure and depth as a result. Now bears comparison with the domaine’s finest wines such as Champans and Clos des Ducs. Drink 2018-2026.

Volnay 1er Cru Champans

MA2

The domaine owns 3.98ha of this important cru and, since taking over in 2003, Guillaume d’Angerville has made a big effort to raise the quality to that of Clos des Ducs. He has replaced the horizontal, rotating vat that was easy to use but which gave wines lighter in texture and concentration. He has also replaced one of the vignerons who looked after part of the vineyard for the domaine. The result is a Champans that is more age-worthy than in the past whilst retaining its ripe, generous personality. Drink 2019-2027.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs

MA3

A monopole of the domaine and its finest wine. Situated just behind and to the side of the house on steeply-rising land that faces due east and captures the all-important morning sun. Lovely mixture of red and black fruits with remarkable concentration from the small yield. Only available in magnums. Drink 2020-2030.

Domaine Jean-Jacques Girard Jean-Jacques runs the family domaine with his wife Agnès and son Vincent. They now have built the domaine up to twenty hectares of vines stretching from Corton in the north to Volnay in the south. The southern vineyards in Volnay and Pommard were badly hit by hail in 2012 a situation that was to be repeated to even worse effect in 2013 when hail struck not only Volnay and Pommard but the villages of Beaune and Savigny as well. Jean-Jacques harvested the 2012 grapes Jean-Jacques Girard between September 22nd and October 3rd at fine levels of maturity and no trace of rot. They are the estate’s finest wines since 2009 with lovely red fruit aromas, good concentration on the palate and long, fresh aftertastes. Like all Girard wines they will be delicious young, remain open as they develop and age remarkably well.

A quasi-monopole of the domaine as the Devillards describe it on the label. They own 99% of this premier cru, one of the best-sited in Nuits. Much of the 3.45 hectares of vines are planted at very high density (13,000 vines per hectare) and date back to 1922. Great depth and concentration, an impressive wine which has not only power but finesse as well. Rich fruit and silky tannins, a winning combination. Drink 2020-2028.

Echézeaux

DP6

The domaine has two plots in grand cru Echézeaux in Les Echézeaux Dessus and Quartier de Nuits. The fruit is vinified together and aged in 90% new oak barrels. The balance, approximately 10% of press wine, is kept in one year old casks and the decision of how much vin de presse to include is only made at the last moment just before bottling. Domaine Bertrand Ambroise This is a real family enterprise. Bertrand and Martine Ambroise head up a 21 hectare domaine ably assisted by their son François and daughter Ludivine. The estate is organic and one of the few Côte d’Or domaines to make equally fine white and red wines. Production in 2012 was much reduced as a result of spring frost and poor flowering, only 80,000 bottles compared to over 150,000 bottles in 2009. The quality, however, is superb with intense aromas and concentrated flavours, the finest reds since 2005 according to Bertrand. White

Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils This 18 hectare estate has been run by Olivier, Christophe and Pascale Rion since 2000. The emphasis is on succulent, aromatic wines with careful extraction of tannins so the grapes are picked at full maturity, 100% de-stemmed and fermented at a relatively low temperature in order to extract the maximum of fruit. The wines are then aged in between 30% new oak for the village wines and 60% for the grands crus. In 2012, the Rions didn’t rush to pick, preferring to wait in order to benefit from the fine September weather and were rewarded with fully ripe, concentrated fruit. Red

A single climat just across the road from premier cru Les Corvées. This is better than many domaine’s premiers crus with beautifully ripe fruit, plenty of aroma and long, fresh finish. Drink 2016-2021.

Vosne-Romanée Le Village

DR2

Rich and spicy, this has charm and body. From two plots in Hauts Beaumonts and Ravioles that are vinified together. Drink 2016-2021.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Vignes Rondes

DR3

This fine premier cru is on the northern side of Nuits in the direction of Vosne and is planted with forty-five and sixty-five year old vines. Combines the power of Nuits with the elegance of Vosne, a splendid combination. Drink 2017-2022.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Beaux Monts

DR4

A beautiful, complete wine as you’d expect from one of Vosne’s best premiers crus located just above grand cru Echezeaux. Sumptuous fruit, generous texture and silky tannins. Drink 2017-2022.

Echézeaux

DR5

Even classier. Wonderful, pure red and black fruits, this is beautifully aromatic with a tremendous, long finish. But only five barrels made for the whole world. Drink 2018-2023.

Clos Vougeot

DR6

From the southern, Monpertuis, section of the Clos just below Grands Echézeaux. Fuller and firmer than the domaine’s Echézeaux, this is a little tighter and more reserved at present but has great potential. Drink 2019-2024.

Domaine Henri Gouges Pierre Gouges’s son, Grégory, is now in charge of the wine-making at this venerable estate. Since 2007 the construction of a new cellar has enabled the wines to be vinified with less pumping and Gregory has also increased the proportion of new oak to over 20% and reduced the number of rackings. His aim is to make wines that retain their traditional ageing ability but are more approachable when young. Judging by this magnificent range of 2012s, he is achieving his goal. The only downside is the volume produced, with yields as low as 22hl/ha in premier cru Les Vaucrains. White

Delicious, aromatic white made from the Gouges family’s own selection massale of a mutant pinot noir found on the domaine in the 1940s. Fresh and fruity but with real personality. Drink 2014-2017.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru La Perrière

HG2

The same selection massale is used for this wine. Fine, peachy, aromatic quality and crisp yet soft texture on the palate. Drink 2015-2018. Red

Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Chaignots

HG4

The domaine’s only premier cru on the northern side of Nuits where the soil is lighter and the wines fruitier and less tannic. Lovely, open style, very stylish and aromatic. Drink 2019-2024.

Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets-Saint Georges

HG5

One of the largest monopoles of the Côte de Nuits. 3.57ha of prime thirty-five year old vines giving a dense, concentrated wine with lovely weight and guts. Drink 2020-2025.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges

HG6

The fruit is fresher and a little more closed. Highly concentrated, plenty of ripe tannin and a long, firm finish. Has all the elements for a great future. Drink 2022-2030.

Domaine Jacques Cacheux et Fils Patrice Cacheux extended the cellar under his house on the route nationale in Vosne in order to have more storage space but has been rewarded with four small harvests in a row! He can now vinify the individual Vosne-Romanée climats separately in order to fully demonstrate the difference that just a few hundred metres makes. The estate’s style remains one of rich, ripe fruit allied to a healthy dose of new oak, 35% on the village wines rising to 100% for the grand cru, a formula with which Patrice’s father, Jacques, made his name in the 1980s and 1990s and which has stood the test of time. From vines within the commune of Vosne-Romanée but on the lower side of the route nationale where the soil is richer and the drainage less good. Ripe and round with just the right amount of oak. A delicious, elegant, spicy pinot noir. Drink 2015-2018.

Vosne-Romanée Les Chalandins

PC2

The vines are just outside the walled Clos Vougeot. A lighter, fresher wine full of red fruits with a crisp, clean finish. Drink 2016-2021.

Vosne-Romanée Les Raviolles

PC3

Les Raviolles are the southernmost vines in Vosne on the border with Nuits Saint Georges. Fresh and forward, this is showing really well with lovely, open texture and silky, ripe tannins. Drink 2016-2022.

Vosne-Romanée Les Ormes

PC4

Lovely, rich, full-bodied wine from the vines that you see from the main road just in front of the village. Succulent and spicy with a generous dose of new oak. Drink 2016-2022.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru La Croix Rameau

PC5

A tiny enclave in grand cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant which is inexplicably classified only as a premier cru. Dense, rich and concentrated, this is definitely grand cru quality. Drink 2018-2025.

Echézeaux

PC6

Splendid richness and concentration as a result of the low yields and old vines. Full and firm but extremely generous on the palate with fine fruit and wonderful length on the finish. Drink 2018-2025.

Domaine Amiot-Servelle Christian Amiot inherited a number of vineyards from his father Pierre in 2010 including parcels in grands crus Charmes-Chambertin and Clos Saint Denis. After small crops in 2010 and 2011, volumes are even more reduced in 2012 (and will be even lower in 2013) as a result of poor weather at flowering time. Quality is very high, however, as the fruit, picked between September 24th and September 30th was perfectly ripe and healthy. Christian is now helped by his daughter, Prune, who has joined the family estate having spent a number of years working as an oenologist for the négociant Jaffelin.

Softer and rounder than the Morey, this is quintessential Chambolle with lovely fruit on the nose and a rich, succulent texture. Most of the vines are situated in front of the village just below premier cru Charmes. Drink 2017-2022.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes

AS2

As the name implies, one of the most delightful premiers crus of Chambolle. Ripe and fruity, concentrated and generous. A complete wine. Drink 2018-2025.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Derrière La Grange

AS3

The domaine owns over half this tiny (0.7ha) premier cru immediately to the south of grand cru Bonnes-Mares. Rich and powerful with more structure and a fine, long, gutsy finish. Drink 2019-2026.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses

AS4

Everyone agrees that Amoureuses is grand cru quality and this is one of the very best examples showing beautiful, pure fruit, silky tannins and a close-knit texture. Finishes amazingly long. Drink 2019-2028.

Charmes-Chambertin

AS5

The domaine has just 0.17 hectares previously leased to Christian’s two brothers. Rich and opulent, this is open and spicy with a splendid, succulent texture and sweet finish. Drink 2018-2027.

Clos Saint Denis

The brown limestone in what most consider to be Morey’s finest grand cru gives wonderful precision and purity of fruit. Fresh and opulent at the same time, this is wonderfully aromatic and has an impressive explosion of fruit on the finish. Drink 2020-2028.

Domaine Jean-Marie Fourrier Jean-Marie is planning to bottle his 2012s a little earlier than normal as the malolactic fermentation was finished quickly. He puts this down to using less chemicals in the vineyards than in the past. The 2012s were 100% destalked as usual but Jean-Marie has bought a new destemmer which treats the fruit more gently and leaves more berries intact. The aim is to produce fruitier, purer wines as a result. The 2012s are richer and riper than the 2011s and are the best since 2005 or 2009. Jean-Marie continues to age all his wines in 20% new oak, preferring the fruit to be seen to its best effect.

JF1

This comes from the domaine’s old vines planted in 1928 in the lieu-dit of Champerrier on the northern border of Gevrey with Brochon. Rich and spicy, this is tremendously aromatic with lovely, generous texture and long aftertaste. Drink 2018-2023.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Gruenchers

JF2

Also planted in 1928, this is every bit as good as Jean-Marie’s Gevrey premiers crus. Powerful and concentrated with plenty of ripe tannin and beautiful, succulent fruit. Drink 2019-2025.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes

JF3

The estate’s only Gevrey premier cru on the southern side of the village adjoining the grands crus. With masses of red and black fruits, this is a soft and spicy, finely-balanced, harmonious wine of immense charm and flavour. Drink 2019-2025.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Goulots

JF4

From the cooler, northern side of Gevrey. More red fruit than black with a really fresh, zippy character. Has the poise and balance to age fantastically. Drink 2019-2026.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques

JF5

Tremendous concentration from the quality of the terroir, the old vines planted in 1910 and the low yields in 2012. Rich and spicy, this is fabulous Burgundy of great depth and beauty. Drink 2020-2028.

Griotte Chambertin

JF6

The domaine’s only grand cru displaying fantastic red cherry fruits and tremendous length and concentration. Drink 2020-2028.

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet Quality has soared since brothers Nicolas and David Rossignol converted the domaine to biodynamic viticulture, the wines displaying significantly more depth and concentration than when they took over from their father in the 1990s. This is not surprising since in 2012 they only harvested 18-22 hl/ha, a far cry from the 50-60hl/ha practised in the past. Vinification is traditional with a majority but not all the bunches being destemmed, a maceration of 10 to 14 days and a proportion of new oak that varies from 15% for the village wines to 50% for the grands crus. Tannic and structured, the fruit is reserved and it needs a few years to open up. A fine village wine of impressive length and concentration. The Rossignols sell off the wine from younger vines anonymously so this is close to premier cru quality. Drink 2018-2022.

Beaune 1er Cru Teurons

RT2

Lovely, juicy wine made from very ripe fruit and aged in 15% new oak to give a touch of spice. Really delicious, harmonious wine which also has the depth to age well. Drink 2017-2022.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur

RT3

Splendidly-situated premier cru just below grand cru MazisChambertin. Always shows well from cask, with creamy fruit and lovely, generous texture. Drink 2019-2024.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle

RT4

Firmer and more structured but with even greater concentration and ageing potential. Plenty of ripe tannins and long aftertaste. Drink 2020-2025.

Latricières-Chambertin

RT5

Always the last vines to be picked but ripeness wasn’t a problem in 2012 and Latricières always retains fine acidity. Fresh and vibrant and really long on the finish. Drink 2021-2026.

Chambertin

RT6

The Rossignols own a sizeable 1.6ha of Chambertin with the oldest vines dating from 1919. This is rich and concentrated with a fine, closeknit texture and explosive, sweet fruit on the finish. Drink 2023-2028.

The Great Domaines of Burgundy By Remington Norman and Charles Taylor MW Photographs: Jon Wyand Shortlisted for the Louis Roederer International Wine Book of the Year

This is the most comprehensive and detailed guide to the finest estates of the Côte d’Or. I spent two years visiting all 141 domaines in the book. It was fascinating to spend time amongst the growers and to note the changes to viticulture since the previous edition over 15 years ago. For example, there is a marked increase in the number of domaines adopting an organic or biodynamic approach. Cellar practices have also evolved with a return to less-extracted reds, more reasonable use of new oak and a greater flexibility in choosing bottling dates to accommodate the different characters of cru and vintage. However, the greatest change since the previous edition has been the handing over to a new generation with a greater perspective on the outside world. Most sons and daughters now leave either to do vintages in the southern hemisphere or to work elsewhere before returning to the family estate. There is a new openness to discuss, compare and taste their wines against their neighbours’ and those from further afield. In many cases new ideas combined with the best of traditional practices have resulted in a huge improvement in quality. If you would like a copy, it is available from Amazon and in all good book shops. I am happy to sign them and send copies within the UK for £40. Overseas postage will be charged at cost. We can also organise gift-wrapping or a special inscription. Copies will also be available to purchase at our Burgundy Tastings.
