Monitoring innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 Using eHealth® The eHealth® Suite offers enhanced support for the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000, which links traditional telephony, connected via a Primary Rate Interface (PRI), and IP telephony. It properly forwards telephone calls, and controls authorization and bandwidth management tasks. To ensure that your service performs as expected, monitor the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 using the eHealth system. When performance does not meet expectations, run eHealth reports to help pinpoint the cause of the problem. This support is available with eHealth Release 5.7 Service Pack 5 and later.

eHealth’s Solution for innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 This topic describes how to actively monitor the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 using eHealth reports and alarms. It contains the following sections: •

Software and License Requirements lists the release requirements and eHealth licensing information.

Discovery describes why and how eHealth discovers gateway devices.

Element Overview describes the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 elements eHealth monitors, and their naming conventions.

Live Exceptions Monitoring describes how eHealth monitors the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 using a Live Exceptions profile.

Reports describes At-a-Glance, Trend, and Top N reports that eHealth supports for the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 elements.

Reference Information lists supported At-a-Glance charts and describes how to run an Element Variable Report to access current Trend and Top N variables.

Software and License Requirements Software: eHealth provides support for the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 running software version 5.01. Licenses: Each gateway element type consumes one universal poller license. Before you discover the gateway devices, you must have an eHealth Application Health license.

Discovery You use the eHealth discover process to locate devices in your network so eHealth can collect data from them and report on their performance and availability. The innovaphone gateways are discovered as applications. When you begin the discover process, select Application mode in the Discover dialog box. NOTE: The inno_voip_module.mtf MIB Translation File (MTF) has been discontinued. If you previously used this

MTF, eHealth will support it until your existing innovaphone devices are rediscovered. After rediscovery, eHealth will use the new innovaphone element types as described the next section, Element Overview.

Element Overview

Figure 1. innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 Data Model

Element Types The following are supported innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 element types: •

innovaphone VoIP Gateway - Represents the gateway as a whole, grouping the other elements.

innovaphone VoIP L2 Lapd - Supports the performance variable l2State, indicating whether the Link Access Protocol-D (LAPD) layer is active. LAPD is the data link layer 2 protocol that manages the exchange of information to the ISDN network.

innovaphone VoIP L1 Pri - Supports the state variable l1PriState, indicating whether the physical layer is active. A Primary Rate Interface (Pri) consists of 24 channels (T1) or 31 channel's (E1).

innovaphone VoIP L1 Bri - Supports the state variable l1BriSate, indicating whether the physical layer is active. A Basic Rate Interface (Bri) contains 2 B channels, and a single D channel (16 kbps) which is used for signaling and call progress messages.

innovaphone VoIP L3 - Supports the number of available/active B channels and calls.

innovaphone VoIP Interface - Supports the state variable voiceIfState, indicating the Interface state.

Live Exceptions Monitoring eHealth offers the Live Exceptions profile innovaphone Gateway - Failure to help monitor innovaphone elements. This profile uses Time over Threshold alarm rules to indicate when too many gateway failures occur. This can indicate availability and traffic problems. Apply this profile to eHealth groups (or group lists) that contain innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 elements.

Reports eHealth reports provide historical and current information regarding the performance of your infrastructure. Use the following reports to monitor your innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 elements: •

At-a-Glance

Trend

Top N

These reports give you the insight necessary to optimize IT performance, plan proactively, recognize trends, and identify potential problems.

At-a-Glance Reports At-a-Glance reports contain a set of pre-defined charts that provide insight into the performance of the elements over a specified period of time. You can use the At-a-Glance reports to compare variables and look for combinations of problems that could indicate problem sources. Review the list of At-a-Glance charts in Table 1 on page 5 to see available charts for each innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 element. The navigation capabilities in At-aGlance reports follow the element hierarchy as shown in Figure 1 on page 2, where each element drills down to its subordinate element or drills up to its superordinate element. This enables you to review the performance of related elements. Sample At-a-Glance Report

This sample At-a-Glance report displays the four charts for a VoIP Gateway element. The Voice Interface Availability (%) chart (bottom right) compares five elements and their percentages of availability from midnight until 9:28 A.M. The green bars represent 80-100 percent availability for those elements, while the red bars represent 0-19 percent availability for the remaining elements. If voice interface availability is too low for a particular element, this might suggest a potential problem that warrants further investigation.

Trend Reports Trend reports allow you to view more granular data on a particular performance variable or set of variables for one or more elements, or for a group of elements over time. When you run a Trend report for an element, select up to 10 variables. You can observe how device behavior changes over time, and determine when the changes occur. For instructions on accessing the most current list of Trend and Top N variables for each element, refer to the Trend and Top N Variables section on page 5. Sample Trend Report

This sample Trend report highlights the availability performance of two elements over a specified time. The availability of the Los Angeles element remained consistent at 100 percent. The availability of the Chicago element starts at 80 percent but it falls during this period to 0 percent, indicating a problem that warrants further investigation.

Top N Reports Top N reports provide information on groups of elements. These reports use the same variables as Trend reports, but in addition they offer variables such as peak values. When you run Top N reports, select a group of elements and the variables that you want eHealth to compare for each element in that group. Elements are listed in ascending or descending order based on the value of the first variable. Sample Top N Report

When you run a Top N report, select a group of elements for which you want to view common values, and then select up to six variables for comparison. This sample Top N report displays the common values for three variables across two elements in the selected group. Availability refers to the percentage of time the elements in were active and running.

How to access current Trend and Top N variables for the innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 elements.

Supported At-a-Glance charts that gauge the performance of each innovaphone Voice Gateway IP3000 element over a specified time period.

Accessing Trend and Top N Variables You can use the eHealth Element Variable Report (available from the eHealth Web interface Organization page) to obtain details about supported Trend and Top N variables. This Element Variable Report shows the Trend variables for a L1 Pri element. It illustrates how eHealth combines and evaluates the MIB variables to obtain the data for each Trend variable.
