It’s Bluegrass Time!

B

luegrass! A style of music named after horse fodder. It could be worse: “Hey, let’s go down to Minnehaha Falls to the Oats and Hay festival!” Actually, of course, bluegrass music is named after Bill Monroe’s innovative band, the Bluegrass Boys. But it was years before anyone called it that—it was just Country music back in the forties. Today, the name generally means bands with banjos and fiddles sounding sort of like the Bluegrass Boys, but not necessarily too much like ‘em. On stage today are six bands with six different approaches to Bluegrass. We’re happy to welcome Becky Schlegel back to the festival this year—you’re in for a treat! Other fine bands include the Buffalo Gals, Platte Valley Boys, Free Range Pickin,’ Tangled Roots, and the everlasting Middle Spunk Creek Boys. In the Twin Cities area, you can hear bluegrass regularly on Friday and Saturday nights at Dulono’s Pizza. On Saturday mornings, tune in KBEM’s “Bluegrass Saturday Morning” show (88.5 FM). If you’re interested in playing bluegrass, most of the music store sponsors in this program have bluegrass instruments, and many offer lessons. Don’t be shy about talking to the musicians performing today, either! They’ll be glad to help or give advice.

The Middle Spunk Creek Boys

T

he Middle Spunk Creek Boys are now in their 37th year, having begun their unbroken performing string career on the West Bank in Minneapolis in 1968.* The Boys have recorded 5 albums, along with their latest project—a DVD of their 35th Anniversary Concert in 2004 featuring nearly all 19 members of the Spunk Alumni Association. The music has always reflected the varied talents in the band, from sparse traditional duets to newgrass to western swing to acapella gospel. These days the band plays as a 4 or 5 piece group (depending on whose meds are working that day). New this year, banjo specialist Jim Tordoff joins Alan Jesperson, Bruce Jaeger, Mark Kreitzer and Chuck Kreitzer. (Jim was a member of the MSCB in the early 80’s, and apparently didn’t learn his lesson.) Jim
