Connecting the Telephone Line Before using the modem, you need to connect your telephone line to the card. To ensure that the modem works properly, you should know the following:

2-4

Your modem may not be used on “party lines,” nor can it be used on toll or coin-operated lines. Contact your local telephone company for help if you are not sure about the suitability of your telephone line.

This modem is intended for use on an analog telephone line, also called a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) line. This modem cannot be connected directly to a digital telephone line, such as those commonly found in businesses. You may use this modem either with an analog line or a digitalto-analog converter compatible with the telephone line you are using.

Certain optional telephone features, such as a “message waiting” light or call waiting, are not compatible with this modem and should not be present on the telephone line on which the modem is to be used. Call waiting may be selectively disabled (in most areas) on outgoing calls. If call waiting is enabled, it may interfere with data being transferred through the modem.

Modem Installation

To connect the telephone line to your modem: 1. Locate the most convenient telephone wall outlet. 2. If a phone is already connected to it, unplug the telephone cable from the wall outlet. 3. Follow the diagram below to connect the telephone line to your modem Telephone Line Jack using the supplied RJ-11 phone cable which comes with your modem package.

Troubleshooting

B

This appendix provides some tips and strategies for resolving some of the problems you may encounter with your card either during installation or normal use.

PROBLEM The modem fails to accept commands to dial or to answer a call. Cause

May be the result of an improper telephone line connection.

Solution

Make sure the telephone cable is attached to the Telephone Line jack, and that the phone set is connected to the Phone jack on your card. Check that all devices are turned on.

PROBLEM No dial tone error when trying to use the modem. Cause

The IRQ of the modem has either conflicted with another device or has been misreported in Windows.

Solution

Many chipsets have IRQ routing drivers for Windows. If you have an internal modem, and these drivers do not work or do not exist for your system, changing the slot of the modem card may help.

PROBLEM Poor sound quality when using Communications software.

Troubleshooting B-1

Cause

Some 32-bit sound and Communications software require a Unimodem V file. Windows 95 normally installs this file. However, in some installations the file is missing and that could affect sound quality when 32-bit software is used.

Solution

Try to install the Unimodem V file as follows: 1. Go to www.modemblaster.com and download Software and Drivers section. Download unimodem V file. 2. Use Windows Explorer and copy the file ‘unimodv.exe’ to your Windows/System directory. 3. Run ‘unimodemv.exe’ — this can be done by double clicking on the file under Windows Explorer. 4. Find the file ‘unimodv.inf’ and right click on this file. Choose Install from the pop up menu. 5. Restart your computer to activate ‘UnimodemV.” 6. Once the system is back on, open Control Panel and double-click the system icon. Click on the “Device Manager” tab. 7. In the list, double-click on the modem icon. 8. Click on the Modem Blaster once, and then click on the Remove button. 9. Click the Refresh button. Clicking Refresh will prompt Windows to detect the modem again, and install it. If this does not happen, please restart the computer. It may also be necessary to re-install the modem.

PROBLEM Interference on the telephone line that is connected to the modem. Cause

It may be due to interference from a power source, monitor, printer, or other computer cables.

Solution

Try moving the telephone line away from any power source, monitor, printer, and other computer cables.

B-2 Troubleshooting

PROBLEM Cannot connect to Internet at 56,000bps speeds. Cause

It may be due to line conditions in your area. Due to your local telephone equipment and regulations and/or line conditions it is not always possible to achieve the maximum data transfer rate.

Solution

Try moving the telephone line away from any power source, monitor, printer, other computer cables and remove other telephone equipment from the line.

PROBLEM What do I select in AOL for the Modem Blaster V.90 PCI DI5797? Solution

AOL provides an automatic auto-detection of your modem. AOL software will find the modem as a “Hayes Compatible Error Correcting”, this is the setting that will work best for your modem.

PROBLEM What initialization string should I use with AOL software? Solution

The recommended initialization string to use with AOL is as follows; AT&F&C1&D2^M.

PROBLEM Where can I locate the AT Command set for my Modem Blaster? Solution

The AT Command set, atcomm.txt, is located on your “Software and Modem Installation” CD-ROM.

PROBLEM Where can I find the most up to date drivers for Modem Blaster? Solution

All Modem Blaster drivers can be found on the www.modemblaster.com web site. Creative is on the cutting edge of driver development so you will not be left behind.

Troubleshooting B-3

Resolving Hardware Conflicts Hardware conflicts occur when two or more peripheral devices contend for the same signal lines or channels. Conflicts between your modem and another peripheral device may be due to the settings of the I/O addresses or IRQ lines.

Resolving Conflicts in Windows 95/98 To resolve conflicts in Windows 95/98, run Device Manager to change the resource settings of your modem or the conflicting peripheral device in your system. To run Device Manager: 1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your Windows 95/98 desktop. 2. Select Properties. The System Properties sheet appears. 3. Click the Device Manager tab. A list of system devices is displayed. 4. Double-click Modem. 5. Select your modem and click Properties. The Modem Properties sheet appears. 6. Click the Resources tab. 7. Select the Use Automatic Settings check box. If this check box is already selected, you need to go to the properties sheet of the conflicting peripheral device and select the same check box there. 8. Reboot your system to allow Windows 95/98 to reassign resources to your modem and/or the conflicting peripheral device. If you are unsure of the settings of any conflicting peripheral devices, you can isolate the source of the problem by temporarily removing all devices (except your modem and essential devices such as the disk controller). After that, add the devices back one at a time until the device that is causing the conflict is found.
