RABBI'S REFLECTIONS RABBI HOWARD NEEDLEMAN

A NEW TRADITION

Mitzvah Day Is Now 'Mitzvah Day Is Every Day'

W

e are beginning a new tradition at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El: “Mitzvah Day Is Every Day.” This year we are adopting a local charity to have an ongoing sustaining relationship with them throughout the year (not one day, but every day). This year, we have partnered with Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward. Every part of our congregation will have an interaction with GJFS – from Early Childhood to Temple Friends.

to its source: God. As Jews it is through our acts of social justice and social action that we help repair our broken world, not one day of the year but each and every day.

There is another Hebrew phrase that also speaks to our commitment to making Mitzvah Day Every Day that comes from Pirkei Avot’s The Sayings of our Jewish Fathers. In it we read mitzvah goreret mitzvah, “one good deed will bring another good deed.” The performance of one mitzvah will lead to the performance of another. The rabbis saw the performance of daily mitzvoth becoming rooted in each of us either by following the examples of others or by one becoming accustomed to the regular performance of mitzvot in our life. Mitzvot lead to one another by either inspiration or perspiration.

Mitzvah Day will be an everyday, ongoing commitment to repairing our world and performing acts of loving kindness. The programs and services offered at GJFS touch so many lives in Broward County and we have already been working so closely with them in a number of ways. As a result, we felt that this was the right organization to partner with in this first year.

It is my hope that by making Mitzvah Day Every Day that we will both inspire and become accustomed to the performance of our ethical and moral obligations as Jews each and every day. Perhaps you will be inspired by a program that we are participating in to make a difference in the life of a holocaust survivor or the victim of domestic violence here in our midst. Or perhaps you will find it becomes part of your daily routine so that each time you come to TKAE you instinctively and automatically bring a canned food item for those in need.

The Hebrew phrase tikun olam, repairing the world, raises many theological questions that we often fail to consider. The first is that the world is broken. On the surface this may not seem a deep theological issue. But, just turn on the news and look at the world around us. To declare God’s created world as broken is bordering on blasphemy. How could God, the one and only perfect being, create anything that isn’t perfect? Is this a reflection of God’s inferiority and weakness, or is it what we as human beings have done to degrade God’s gift of creation.

We recognize that to be a member of the Jewish faith binds us to God, to each other and the to the world, as imperfect as it is. We also know that our moral and ethical obligations don’t begin and end when you enter into the synagogue to pray, but are a part of our daily life.

However, the phrase also gives us a certain sense of power over our world and in our relationship with God as partners in the ongoing work of creation. In the Kabbalistic or mystical understanding of creation itself, Isaac Luria wrote that shortly after God created light, the vessels of the universe proved unable to contain it and shattered (shevirat ha-kelim, the breaking of the vessels), and scattered the sparkles of light and the shards of the vessels to create the physical world.

In Judaism morality, ethics and religion come together to shape our lives, give us hope and command us to go out into the world in the pursuit of justice. Seeking and loving God means to strive for holiness, righteousness and goodness each and every day.

Our broken world isn’t the result of an imperfect creation, but the raining down of God’s divine sparks of light. To effect a repair of the world (tikun olam), was to restore God’s light to its creator, and that this was accomplished through the performance of mitzvot. Fulfilling that mitzvah liberates the spark (nitzotz) of light and the light returns

L’shalom,

Rabbi Howard Needleman 3

Join Our Temple Family As We Embrace Mitzvah Every Day

I

wonder about the people with the signs “No Food – Hungry,” “Please Help,” and others. We see them typically at traffic lights starring at us in our comfortable cars. What’s our reaction? What do we do or say?

Hebrew is an interesting language. One word often has various meanings. Shalom is a well known example: hello, goodbye, peace and wholeness are all possibilities depending on the context. Mitzvah is another one of those words. To some, a mitzvah is a commandment, others, a good deed. Reform Judaism has taken the performance of acts of loving kindness or mitzvot to an entirely different level. Indeed tikum olam or making this world a better place through acts of loving kindness has become a rallying call of our movement. In many ways we believe that a mitzvah is a good deed but not one that we have a choice to do. We are required to perform mitzvot, not only because they help others, but just as importantly because they help us. They remind us that we’re part of a community. They help us be more sympathetic to others. They ground us, helping us to put our problems into perspective. Mitzvot bring us wholeness and peace.

MARK GOLDMAN CANTOR

And that brings me back to the people with the signs. Perhaps they were unlucky or perhaps their situation is of their own making. It’s irrelevant and doesn’t concern me. Bottom line is that they need help. I keep a stack of protein bars in my glove compartment. I open one (so that there’s no chance they could go to a store and exchange it for anything else) and give them out regularly. A small easy act on my behalf, which means the world to another. Join our Temple family as we selflessly and selfishly embrace our obligation of performing Miztvot on a daily basis. Mitzvah day IS everyday.

RABBI DAVID INGBER FRIDAY • FEBRUARY 5, 2016 • 7:30 PM Rabbi David Ingber is the founder of New York’s Upper Westside Synagogue Romemu. Romemu advocates a post-denominational Judaism that transcends ideologies and labels, that is joy-based and contemplative, ecstatic and reverential, and connected to our tradition. Synagogue Romemu has become a testing ground for reinventing Jewish practice within a traditional framework and is one of the fastest-growing synagogues in the country. It draws clergy from around the country looking to experience what has attracted so many people to this emerging religious practice. It is then no surprise that Rabbi David Ingber was listed in Newsweek’s 50 most influential rabbis in America for 2013 and was featured recently on NBC’s Today Show on spirituality and faith. 5

Let Our Temple’s Voice Be Heard On a National Stage

I

write this bulletin article to discuss the engagement of our Temple with strong Jewish organizations. It is vital for our Temple to create strong Jewish strategic partnerships so that we can have an impact, not just in Plantation, or even Florida, but in the greater Jewish community. I would like to discuss our Temple’s recent experience with two national organizations that are important to me, our Temple and to our community. The first organization is the URJ.

JASON CHALIK

TEMPLE PRESIDENT

As one Jewish family in Davie, Florida, my family can do very little. As members of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, we can speak out. We can do our part to heal the world in our community.

I have just returned from the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) Biennial in Orlando. Every two years our union has a meeting somewhere in North America to gather as one reform community. This year there were over 5,000 participants. I am proud to announce that our synagogue brought more than 40 congregants to the Biennial. Our delegation was the largest in Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El history, and one of the largest at the Biennial. In fact, we brought more of our youth than any other delegation. As a result we were denoted as a platinum delegation. The Biennial is an extraordinarily spiritual gathering. We prayed with 5,000 Jews. The URJ speaks to our hopes and dreams. We aim to heal the world and speak out against injustice and discrimination. Our cantor, Mark Goldman, spoke in his capacity as the president of the American Conference Of Cantors, while Rabbi Needleman led the concluding service. It gave me great pride to see our Temple clergy play a significant part in the Biennial. All of us left with a renewed passion for our Jewish community, and a desire to make our synagogue better. We also left with some knowledge; the knowledge that Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El is a very special place. Sometimes you do not know what you have until you have something to compare it to. So I return, from the URJ Biennial proud of our synagogue and excited to work with the URJ to fight discrimination and intolerance and to help make the world a better place. The next organization I would like to discuss is AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee). Every year, AIPAC has an annual meeting called the policy conference. The conference is held in Washington, D.C. This year the policy conference will be March 20-22. 6

Last year, our Temple sent the largest delegation in the history of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El to the policy conference in Washington, D.C. The conference has one main objective: Strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship in ways that enhance the security of Israel and the United States. During the conference last year, we heard from the prime minister of Israel, the former president of Spain, and the current president of the Czech Republic. We also listened to both Democratic and Republican senators discuss the need for a strong relationship between the United States and Israel. As I mentioned during the High Holidays, we have 6.1 million Jews in the United States and 6.7 million in Israel, the rest of the world has about 2.3 million Jews. Therefore, it is up to the United States and Israel to defend and secure the Jewish people. AIPAC works to promote and strengthen the bond between the two countries. Following the policy conference, I have joined AIPAC. I feel that it is important that we as Jews have strong organizations that fight to make sure that the relationship between Israel and the United States is rock solid. My fellow congregants, as I write this article, Paris has just been struck by terrorists. The terrorists are radical Islamists. They have a psychopathic ideology and they are reaching others who are filled with hate. We are at war with these people. As one Jewish family in Davie, Florida, my family can do very little. As members of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, we can speak out. We can do our part to heal the world in our community. We can also show that our Temple has a bond with Israel that will never waiver. Finally, our Temple needs to be a force in our national organizations such as the URJ and AIPAC. In these organizations, we can speak out against intolerance. We can also make sure that our government hears our concerns and reflects our values. We are in a war over values. Our Jewish values need a voice in this fight. Let our Temple have a voice. Please support our Temple and our national Jewish organizations.

SOCIAL ACTION A Mitzvah Every Day Makes Our World a Better Place round. Every time we come to our Temple for services, free movies, guest speakers and other events we can bring non-perishable food items to donate.

By Liz Ross TKAE SOCIAL ACTION CHAIR

M

itzvah is a commandment, but instead of just spreading kindness and charity on one special day we will now as a Temple have an opportunity to get children, teenagers and adults involved in chesed (kindness) and community service activities “every” day!

Additionally, on a monthly basis we will also have special collections. For example, in November we collected cell phones that members are longer are using. (Please see the list of additional items at the end of the story on GJFS on the next page.) This type of donation will be in addition to our food donations. The donation receptacles are at the entrance of our sanctuary. Bringing donations every time we visit our beautiful Temple is another way to have a Mitzvah Every Day.

Every year as a Temple we will select a great organization or group to support throughout the year in a variety of activities that can involve the whole family! This year we are excited to be supporting the Goodman Jewish Family Services (GJFS) of Broward. All of our projects and collections will support this amazing organization. Additional information on the different services and activities you can be a part of will be provided.

I hope that everyone feels as excited for this shift to Mitzvah Day Is Every Day as much as we do in the TKAE Social Action Committee. Small acts when multiplied by millions can transform the world.

As our Temple shifts towards a culture of social action and service, we will expand our collections to year

OFFERING HOPE The Goodman JFS of Broward Helps Individuals and Families In Our Community

G

oodman JFS of Broward is changing lives for the better every day by offering hope, dignity and a helping hand to individuals in our community regardless of race, religion or ethnic background. For more than 52 years, GJFS has been here for our community, making Broward County a better place to live.

Domestic Abuse Program

The Pearl and Stanley Goodman JFS of Broward offers a myriad of programs and services to the community at large, including:

To help break the cycle of abuse, GJFS offers a 24-hour crisis line (954) 560-8303, confidential counseling, care management and emergency housing to over 40 adults and their 120 children who are victimized by domestic abuse. KOLOT, a volunteer coalition of caring individuals and agencies dedicated to ending domestic abuse in the Jewish community through outreach, education and public awareness is also part of our fight against domestic abuse.

Holocaust Survivors Assistance Program Funded through a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, this program provides help with reparations, in-home care, respite care, emergency financial assistance, in-home counseling, emergency assistance and social events to over 750 Holocaust survivors in Broward County.

In 2014, Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman, members of Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El, created an outstanding legacy by providing avery generous endowment gift. In gratitude, the agency officially changed its name to the Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman Jewish Family Services Inc. of Broward County, also known as the Goodman JFS of Broward. Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El has chosen to support the Goodman JFS of Broward for its first year of Mitzvah Day Is Every Day. 8

Emergency Financial Assistance Program The program provides short-term, financial assistance to help the neediest in times of crisis. We provide help with food, rent, utilities and medication to the elderly, families and individuals.

Care Management When families become overwhelmed trying to manage the care for an elderly parent or disabled loved one, Family Link swings into action. Experienced staff assesses, coordinates and monitors your loved ones’ daily routines, medical necessities and more to enhance their quality of life while communicating closely with other family members so they don’t have to worry about mom and dad.

Behavioral Health Services The services are provided by licensed clinicians, who serve people of all ages, address and resolve a wide range of challenges including grief, depression, anxiety, trauma and issues relating to family relationships. We also provide individual, couples, family and group therapy.

Joshua’s Path This is GJFS’s newest program and is a free service to families who are caring for an adult or adolescent child with a developmental, physical or mental health disability. The program provides education, advocacy and one-on-one consultations. Joshua’s Path is designed to assist families in the life planning process, so that there are adequate arrangements and supports in place when primary caregivers can no longer provide care. More programs are being planned that focus on adults with disabilities, including vocational training, and job placement and coaching.

Volunteer Services The Goodman JFS of Broward welcomes volunteers to provide direct services to our clients, such as friendly visits, telephone reassurance calls, gift card delivery and driving seniors to appointments. Others assist with event planning, fund raising, agency outreach and awareness or assist with administrative office functions. As a non-sectarian charitable organization, grounded in Jewish values and dedicated to providing exceptional human services, GJFS is passionate about our commitment to serve all members of our community. Our services offer a lifeline for a lifetime to the entire community. For more information, contact the Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman JFS of Broward at 954-370-2140 or visit: www.jfsbroward.org

Camp Coleman Is A Lifetime Experience

O

ne of our members just wasn’t psychologically prepared to allow her children to go to sleep-away camp. I understand that. When we first saw Elizabeth off to Camp Coleman, we were more than a bit concerned – and Fern was absolutely distraught! Three years later, when it was Bryan’s time for Coleman, and while we obviously love him, we also recognized that being empty-nesters for a while wasn’t bad at all!

DR. SHELDON J. HARR FOUNDING RABBI EMERITUS

The camp to which we are committed is The Union for Reform Judaism’s camp – Camp Coleman. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in northeast Georgia, the setting is magnificent, the programs are amazing, the friendships formed are permanent, and the memories developed through experiencing Coleman are everlasting. For many years, first as my Temple’s Youth Group president when the camp opened for the first time (I won’t tell you the year!), through the years

A TKAE JEWISH ADULT G LEARNIN E NC EXPERIE

when we sent our kids to be campers there, during those many years when I also served as rabbinic staff during the summer, and when I returned to celebrate Coleman’s 50th Anniversary, Camp Coleman has become a permanent and vitally important part of my being. It is a camp like no other. I am not sure if there are any openings for the summer of 2016. If not, and you are a parent (or a grandparent!), be certain that sometime next year (September/October 2016), you give your kids or grandkids a Coleman camping experience of a lifetime. By the way and not unimportantly, through the Elizabeth Shoshanna Harr Youth Memorial Fund we are able to award some scholarships for first-time campers.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Would you risk everything - your future, your citizenship, even your life - to help a brother in need? In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride. 12

EARLY CHILDHOOD

EC Celebrates Mitzvah Day Every Day

“Tzedakah is not about giving, Tzedakah is about being.” - Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson

Recently, our students decorated Chanukah cards to be given to Holocaust survivors through Goodman Jewish Family Services. As in past years, we are collecting wrapped Chanukah gifts to be given to children in need also through GJFS. Our students help deliver the toys to GJFS which help them further understand the meaning of tzedakah.

O

ne of the many mitzvot we teach our children in Early Childhood is giving tzedakah. Tzedakah is an essential Jewish value and giving is an important part of what young children are learning to do. Many times tzedakah is translated as “charity” but the value of tzedakah goes well beyond collecting money in our tzedakah boxes each week and donating to charities. Tzedakah means “righteousness”. When we teach our children about the mitzvah of tzedakah, we are also teaching them that as Jews we need to care for each other and those around us.

Next time your child asks you for tzedakah, when they hand you the note sent home about various collections or when they tell you that they decorated cards, make sure you talk about it in your home as we do in school. We want to continually reinforce that whether it’s monetary, physical or emotional, we all have to do our part to help those around us. It is our job as educators and parents to empower our children to make the world a better place.

When I heard that TKAE was replacing “Mitzvah Day” with “Mitzvah Day Is Every Day,” I thought: “How appropriate for Early Childhood.” In EC, we DO celebrate Mitzvah Day Every Day. Over the summer, our PTO Board was busy planning exciting programming and events for our students to enjoy. Part of programming included social action for the year, which is being led by Shari Saideman and Tara Slavin.

Stacey Katz Director, Early Childhood Program Thank you to: Ariel, Indira and Max Dejtiar Mark, Norah and Joshua Harris Paul, Lauryn, Max and Sydney Schuman For sponsoring our November Tot Shabbat

THE COHEN/WILLIAMS FAMILY

They Have Been Members Of Our Temple Since 2011 P rior to joining our Temple, Jennifer and Von had attended services at our Temple many times with Jennifer’s parents, longtime TKAE members Howard and Judith Cohen. They even had their daughter Sophie’s baby naming here in 2005. When it came time for them to find a synagogue after moving to Plantation, they searched for a place with a culture of inclusion for their interracial, interfaith family.

Given their prior experiences at TKAE, they didn’t have to look far to find the right choice. Sophie, a spirited girl who marches to the beat of her own drum, immediately took to the Day School program, and Jennifer and Von became involved in the PTO. Later, Sophie fully embraced the Religious School program, with Jennifer and Von again remaining involved through room parent roles and other volunteer activities. The Cohen / Williams family are, from left, Von, Sophie and Jennifer.

When he’s not gaming on Xbox Live or shredding on his guitar, Von, a Margate police officer, can often be seen chaperoning the kids at various TKAE youth events. Jennifer, the executive director of benefits at the University of Miami, enjoys art, music and crafts, and can often be seen in her ‘Canes gear on the weekend (much to the chagrin of her Gator-Nation husband). Beyond her Religious School studies and JEWNIORS activities, Sophie can be seen here even during the summer attending Music’s Cool Day Camp and Elite Summer Camp. Now a fifth grader at Summit Questa Montessori, Sophie enjoys rock music, dogs, horseback riding and mischief. The Cohen/Williams family is thrilled that Sophie’s Bat Mitzvah date has been set. She’ll be the second generation to become a Bat Mitzvah at TKAE, following her Abuelita Judith, “Ita” for short, who was called to the bimah in 2007; all in the family.

OUR B’NAI MITZVAH KIDS JACOB REESE THORTON – FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 7:30 P.M.

Jacob Reese Thornton was born on January 9, 2003, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is an honor student at American Heritage School. His many interests include soccer and music. He is a proficient musician who plays several instruments including the drums and guitar. He plays in several local bands throughout Broward County. His mitzvah project entails visiting local independent and assisted living facilities and playing his music for the elderly population to enjoy. Jacob believes this is very rewarding because he can truly see the joy his music brings to them. LIBERTY LAPAYOWKER - SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 - 10:15 A.M. Liberty Maia Lapayowker is presently a 7th grader at the NSU University School. She began her education and Jewish Studies at the TKAE Early Childhood Program at age two years and continued in the TKAE Day School along with her siblings. The Lapayowker family has been Temple members since 1998 and continues to participate in many temple activities. Liberty would love to celebrate the occasion of her Bat Mitzvah in Israel at some point in the near future as well. Liberty is still involved in the educational program at TKAE and she fondly remembers her elementary school years there. Liberty is an avid golfer and a blossoming chef. She is fascinated with any television series related to medicine and enjoys working in her mom’s medical practice on vacations. Liberty enjoys family time with her parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, especially during holiday celebrations. Liberty is a sweet, bright and passionate young lady and her family looks forward to this momentous occasion.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Religious School Participates In Survivors Program

T

eens in OMGJK (7th and 8th graders) took an active part in the Holocaust Survivor’s Assistance Program last month. This program has 750 clients (survivors) all over Broward County and 10 care managers who do home visits, assist survivors with all their needs, and arrange social events for them with local businesses. We invited Mr. Leon Schagrin, an 89-year-old survivor, along with his case manager, Jodie Berman, as guest speakers. The teens were mesmerized listening to Mr. Schagrin’s survivor story. He wrote his entire ordeal story in a book: “The Horse Adjutant.”

We have culminated the program with an art project. The teens created center pieces for the tables at Café Europa in Ft. Lauderdale for a luncheon honoring the survivors. Taking an active part in a community service experience was the goal of this program – it was a success!

YOUTH PROGRAM

We Have Kicked Off The Year With Exciting Activities By Logan Armstrong KAFTY Social Action Vice President

I

chose to run for KAFTY Social Action Vice President because I feel that it is important to make a difference in our community one mitzvah at a time. Social action is repairing the world by improving our community. KAFTY has worked with other Temple organizations to make a difference in the community. We have volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, making meals for families whose children are receiving treatment at the hospital. We have also volunteered at Children’s Harbor with foster children. Over the past few years we have visited several times bringing games and activities with us to play with the residents. KAFTY also has taken part

regularly in Relay for Life. We usually sponsor our own team in the event. This year we are hoping to team up with another NFTY Youth Group and raise even more money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. As part of the Temple’s new Mitzvah Day is Every Day program, we are will be taking GJFS Joshua’s Path program participants bowling. This will be a great way for our members to give back and spend the afternoon with adults who have developmental disabilities and help them to take part in a fun and social afternoon. As part of our region, NFTY-STR we help to run and fund Camp Jenny. Camp Jenny is held over Memorial Day weekend at Camp Coleman in Cleveland, GA. The camp is for inner-city Atlanta school children. It’s

great to be able to give these kids a weekend away from the stress of their everyday lives. For some it is the one time a year they receive three full meals each day. Not only do members of KAFTY attend camp and work as counselors and other staff but several of our alumni continue to come back and work at camp. We also raise money for camp and last year we started what we hope will become an annual tradition, our Dessert Tasting Fundraiser. Last year at the inaugural event we were able to donate $1,000 to Camp Jenny. This year’s event will be on April 18, so please mark your calendars now. I hope to see many of our teens participating in all of the great social action programs that KAFTY and our Temple offer.

WRJ/SISTERHOOD

As Women Who Are Focused On Progress, We Are Stronger Together

W

omen have entered a new age of Feminism. Gloria Steinem turned 81 and says she feels free of the demands of gender. Lena Dunham has an edgy cable hit in “Girls” and a seriously read newsletter on women’s political issues, “LENNY.” Amy Schumer has taught us that women don’t have to look like models to be successful and that “smart” is the new “hot.”

DAVIA MAZUR PRESIDENT OF SISTERHOOD

The new Feminism is women who want to express their different sides. There are times when we want to discuss the injustices of the world. And there are times when we want to put on stilettos and a little black dress and party. TKAE Sisterhood wants to help you find this balance in your lives. We are a chapter of Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ), the worldwide collective voice and presence of women in progressive Jewish congregational life. WRJ’s tag line is “stronger together” because we women – young and old – must help one another enhance the ideals and values of Jewish living for ourselves and future generations. WRJ has and continues to advocate for education policy, equal treatment of and pay for women, and LGBTQ issues. It has spoken out forcefully in favor of Planned Parenthood in the recent political dispute. And of course, it has been a steadfast advocate for the role of women in Judaism. Women are always busy with the demands of work, childcare, eldercare and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But make time for yourself by attending our

meetings and events and becoming part of the wonderfully-diverse sisterhood of women in your Temple family. Here are some of our scheduled events: Tuesday, Jan. 12 – Bingo Bash, f/k/a Bingotini, is back starting at 7 p.m. and is going co-ed. This is not your grandmother’s Bingo game but rather our kitschy version, reprised with mysterious guest callers, crazy drinks, prizes and cash. Monday, Feb. 8 – Purim Basket Fundraiser Kickoff. On Purim we emphasize the importance of Jewish unity and friendship by sending gifts of food to friends, teachers and colleagues. Watch for information about how you can participate in that mitzvah while supporting WRJ/Sisterhood and TKAE. Sunday, Feb. 21 – Four Sundays during the year, Sisterhood funds and organizes hands-on cooking projects for our religious school students. We will be making and baking Challah with your children in grades K-2. Please contact me at TKAESisterhood@ gmail.com to participate in any of our programs. We are always looking for smart, vibrant women to enrich our lives.

TEMPLE FRIENDS

Value Every Life By Giving Help When You Can In years past, Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El has selected one day out of the year to be “Mitzvah Day.” For the most part, it has been a huge success where close to 750 members participated in several projects. However, don’t we strive to do mitzvahs throughout the year?

Jeffrey Weinstein TEMPLE FRIENDS PRESIDENT

I would ask each of our Temple Friends members to incorporate tzedek (kindness), tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (social justice) into their everyday lives. This message can be summarized in five words, “Mitzvah Day Is Every Day.” I challenge each one of you to try to do a mitzvah every day. Look for the numerous mitzvah opportunities that present themselves everyday. We should strive to do these mitzvot because they are needed in the world, because many of them are quick and easy to do, because we never know how big an impact they many have and because it feels good to them.

Some of the quick and easy mitzvot include: smiling at others, greeting people, not speaking badly about others, and allowing cars to merge in front of us. We’re really not supposed to say “thank you” to a Jew for doing a mitzvot. It comes with the job. But I want to indulge in the pleasure of telling you how heartwarming it has been for me to work with all of you during the many mitzvot that Temple Friends does during the year. I appreciate the efforts of every one of you. Let’s strive for Mitzvah Day every day! B’Shalom
