Diocesan Cathedral/Minster Spirituality Days 2013 Welcome to our 2013 programme of Diocesan Spirituality Days One of our recent spirituality days received this comment on a feedback form: ‘Not spiritual enough’. This highlights that one person’s spiritual experience may leave another person cold: other feedback forms from the same day stressed how their minds had been opened to a new way of relating to God. What does ‘spiritual’ mean to you? Does it mean something that makes you feel holy or gives you a warm glow? Does it mean talking to God? For me it mainly means listening to God, trying to open myself at ever deeper levels and becoming aware of the many sneaky ways in which I resist God without realising it. Spirituality can be tough stuff. This year’s programme of Spirituality Days covers a broad spectrum in the hope that there will be something for everyone. Please be aware that the day’s format is up to the speaker, and they won’t necessarily all be the same. Some will be silent, some will involve group interaction. Last year’s day on spirituality and play had us laughing uproariously—but things are usually quieter. I hope that you will be encouraged to try something new and let your eyes be opened to the presence of God in new places, in new ways, for the renewal and refreshing of your joy in him. Revd Dr Ruth Tuschling Diocesan Spirituality Adviser N.B. Please use the forms at the back of the brochure to book for the days. The venues will be open for registration 30 minutes before the start and hot drinks will be provided during the morning and at lunchtime. Do please bring your own lunch. Alternatively, there are eating places in Old Portsmouth and in Newport. Please also note that, as you are sitting for quite a bit of time in what are old stone buildings, it might be advisable to wear light but warm layers so that if you do feel cooler you can add an extra layer of warmth. Do bring a cushion if you find church seating less than comfortable. PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.software-partners.co.uk

There will be some practical opportunities to make music as well as to listen, reflect and experience some of the most powerful music of the Christian Church.

Dr David Price is the Organist and Master of the Choristers at Portsmouth Cathedral

Taster Day for Inspire

Inspire The Inspire foundation course in Christian spirituality has been running for nearly ten years and is always well attended. This year it has been extensively revised and will now comprise 24 Tuesday evening sessions, run over two terms from September 2013 to May 2014, plus a Week of Accompanied Prayer. The Inspire course introduces a different aspect of Christian spirituality and prayer in each session. We can learn a great deal both from those who have travelled the Christian paths in the past and those who, like us, travel the paths today. We are inspired and challenged as well as comforted and confirmed in our prayer life with God during the weeks of the Inspire Course, leading to a deeper awareness of God’s love for us. Inspire has an experiential focus, and participants are encouraged to share in small listening groups as they explore unfamiliar territory. This taster day will be led by members of the Inspire team and aims to give a representative idea of what the course will involve, including different approaches to spirituality and different styles of prayer.

Cost £7.50 For a leaflet about the Inspire course, contact Kay Lancaster at the address in this booklet.

Saturday 1st June St Thomas’ Cathedral, Old Portsmouth 10.00 am to 3.30 pm

Metaphor and the Movies Encountering God through Metaphor Duncan Strathie God comes to us in many ways, mediated through a variety of experiences and encounters. Story has always been an important feature of how human beings make meaning of their experiences and the world around them. Metaphors often comprise an important element of story telling. Films deliver stories in particular ways that give substance to characters and places, often through metaphor, but they still leave room for our imagination to work. This presents us with the opportunity to reflect on films and perhaps see God’s story intermingle with the story in the film and also with our story. Our day together will offer plenty of space to reflect on how God comes to us and we shall be watching some clips that might encourage us as we do that. We shall also watch a short film together in its entirety along with an invitation to consider for ourselves how we might understand any metaphors it may contain. Our day will conclude with a short act of worship where, if they wish, people have the opportunity to share a metaphor that has been helpful to them. Cost £7.50 Duncan Strathie is the Ministry Training Officer and Joint Diocesan Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Winchester. He has led many courses and events that explore spirituality, theology and film together and is a regular contributor to the Bible Society’s Reel Issues website. He is passionate about making links between contemporary culture and God’s activities in the world and sees film to be an easy way to this. Saturday 6th July Newport Minster, IOW 10.00 am to 3.30 pm

Hopeweavers arts & crafts day Jacqui Lea A day of creative stillness and silence. Our aim is to create an intentional space together at the heart of our everyday routines, through a range of activities inspired by our rich Christian traditions, so we can each draw closer to God. Our day will be framed through shared worship using the Hopeweaver Daily Office and Jacqui will offer a series of optional short reflections based on the Bible texts chosen for this day. There will be plenty of space for silence, reflection, and opportunities to explore a range of creative activities including weaving without a loom, painting, drawing, journalling, collage and work in 3D. Maybe you are someone who already uses creativity to explore your faith? Or maybe you would like the opportunity in a safe space to start to discover more? Regardless of your experience, you are most welcome to be part of creating this time out together.

The Hopeweavers team is based on the outskirts of Southampton and offer a programme of Quiet and Community Days. The Questions Jesus Asked Esme Shaw Jesus often asked his disciples and others questions that tended to tax them, but these questions are just as relevant to us today. Through prayer and reflection on some of them we can deepen our relationship with Christ and indeed with ourselves. Our prayer life can become more profound, not just through knowing Jesus but at a deeper level, through understanding ourselves too. I hope that this day will give us time and to reflect, without being afraid of lenges we might face, on questions might desire us to ponder on with present help.

Sentinel of silence: Thomas Merton Ruth Tuschling Thomas Merton held in tension two contradictory vocations: to be a monk in a silent order, and to communicate his thoughts in poetry, letters and essays. He was a key figure in the recent revival of the contemplative tradition in Western Christianity, and also engaged in the peace movement and dialogue with other religions. He was a remarkably attractive personality, and his description of his conversion and entry into the monastery was a bestseller in the 1950s. Many followed him into the monastic life. Merton died in 1969. In this day we will hear Merton’s story and engage with some of his poetry, in order to reflect on our own journey with God. We will spend the day in silence together and conclude with a Eucharist. Please arrive in time for coffee from 9.30 so that we can formally begin the silence together at 10.00.

Ruth Tuschling is the diocesan adviser for spirituality. She enjoys running all kinds of retreats and quiet days and her personal interest is in silent contemplative prayer. She is also learning to paint ikons.

Cost £7.50
