Minocqua's Labor Day Antique Show Adventure

Continued on page 17

Article & photos by Carol Zache The first annual Labor Day Antique Show Adventure in Minocqua, Wisconsin was a huge success. The weather was glorious and the show was too. The leaves had begun turning to reds and golds adding their colors to the beautiful blue of the lakes and the deep greens of the surrounding north woods. The show was held at Lakeland High School in the beautiful commons on August 31st and September 1st, 2013. The dealers were from several states, as far away as Florida, Indiana, and Illinois and of course, Wisconsin. Many of them have been in our Minocqua shows for several years. These shows are the best in the north woods. The 4th of July show has been an ongoing success for 20 years.

WADA: Celebrating Sixty-Two Years of Quality Antiques Shows Article & photos by Brian Maloney More than Fifty quality antiques dealers converged at the Waukesha Expo Center on October 4th and 5th for the 62nd annual Wisconsin Antique Dealers Association (WADA) Antiques Show & Sale. Ever since their first show way back in the 1940’s, the WADA Shows have been synonymous with quality and honesty, a tradition that continues to this day. At this oldest of all Badger State antiques shows, customers can browse through a wide selection of American and Continental antique furniture, accessories, and decorative arts with the assurance (and guarantee) of authenticity. Out & About What a week! Technology is supposed to make life easier for all of us, and it does, until it all comes crashing down. My laptop blew up on Friday, and an office computer on Saturday. With some help from my mother (Jeni) we were able to get the office one going. Thank you mom! The laptop, I was informed was not that lucky, the dinosaur is to old to even get parts. Everyone makes fun of me, because I keep paper copies of Take The everything!! Good thing I do. I wish I was that diligent on Challenge Buy backing up. We had some snow flakes here this week. American! Others have informed me, that they had up to 2” of snow. When Out and About this weekend, be sure to check out:

Waukesha Expo Center Hosts Sixty-Second Annual WADA Antiques Show Article & Photos by Brian Maloney

All of the WADA shows are held at the Waukesha Expo Center Forum Building, just a short drive west of Milwaukee. You couldn’t ask for a better venue for the event it’s a short hop off the interstate, with plenty of free parking. Inside, the fifty-plus dealers can spread out among the three well-lit adjacent halls of the Forum Building. It’s those dealers, of course, that are the reason that folks have been coming to the WADA shows for so long. The dealer’s wares run the gamut, from Arts & Crafts furniture to country store artifacts. At Auntie’s Attic, I found a wonderful example of the latter – a rare and spec- Raven Nest came with a huge array of period tacular 1890s postcard display Ferris wheel handmade from embossed sheet tin, ask- brass, glass, & wood candlesticks, plus this 19th century European pine cupboard, asking price $2,400. 920-693-8428 ing price $1,495. Also there: an elegant 18th century English Sheffield plate carousel epergne standing 22” in height. Art more your thing? There were great examples all over the show, from the oil landscapes by regional artists at Christman Art & Antiques to a group of early 20th century Roland Reed photogravures of Native Americans at The Missing Link. In fact, you’ll find dealers here specializing in pretty much everything - from the Scandinavian woodenware at Larsen Antiques to Dutch Hollow Antiques’ huge array of classic American stoneware. And every WADA Antiques Show has a featured attraction booth. Noted firefighting memorabilia collectors Dick and Debbie Griem sponsored this one. They assembled hundreds of pieces from their thirty-five years of searching - everything from toys and games to period fireman’s badges and helmets. I look forward to every WADA Antiques Show. Each dealer has something different to offer, whether it’s that special antique you’ve been hunting for, an impromptu history lesson, or stories of the treasures they’ve found (and lost) over the years. The Wisconsin Antique Dealers Association (WADA) is a non-profit organization dedicatTwo art pottery highlights from Antiques at ed to preserving the heritage of the State of Wisconsin, and providing an ongoing eduGordon’s: the 13 1/2” scenic Nippon vase cation for its member dealers and the general public. priced at $600, the figural nude The organization also has a history of providing grants to historical and heritage socidancer Cowan Pottery flower eties throughout the State of Wisconsin, as well as scholarships to area students. A Huge Success for 1st Annual Labor Day Antique Show in Minocqua, Wisconsin Article & photos courtesy of Carol Zache The dealers brought their best for this holiday show and their booths were full of terrific antiques and collectibles. There was beautiful fine jewelry and silver at the booth of Sunshine Treasures from Milwaukee. It is truly an out of the ordinary booth with first class silver and jewelry. Carol is always glad to answer your questions and she brings the finest quality for you to choose from, she can also help you match your silver when looking for the hard to find piece. Mark Wilson of Wilson's Antiques in Park Falls, was a new dealer at this show. He has probably the finest collection of advertising to be offered as well as great toys, crocks, tins, fire arms, decoys, furniture and anything else you might look for. Everything is in pristine condition, a first class display. Glenn Hoffman was there with his incredible offering of vintage toys. If you don't see it in his booth, just ask him, he probably has it at home or he can find what it is your looking for. Glenn knows everything there is to know about toys, from dolls to trains, trucks to peddle cars. Everything! Jo and Jim Addie's Somewhere in Time booth again had an eye popping display with their period Czech Art Deco and Art Nouveau jewelry as well as delightful collectible ladies finery and smalls. The booth is so pretty you just have to stand and enjoy looking at it before making your selections. Another new dealer was The Dove Antiques from Crandon, WI. Carla brought a lively collection of advertising items with prints, paintings, fishing items as well as carnival glass. Char Clark again joined us, coming up from Orland Park, IL. and brought a varied selection of smalls and collectibles. She and husband Ray have done shows here in the north woods for many years. Dave Altenburg, from Neenah, WI just couldn't stop selling. He brought lots of advertising and painted cupboards, benches and small stools, lots of primitives. All the good stuff. Gwen Lefevre from Stockholm, WI set up her usual "knock-out" booth with loads of early wood items, primitives, a selection of textiles, quilts and pottery. Many Scandinavian collectibles, as well as small boxes, trunks and more. A delightful booth. Joan Schmitt from Attic Treasures, a new dealer, set up an incredible display of glass, china and flatware. Her booth fairly glitters in her lighting. She carries lots of vintage glass and is always glad to answer questions. At Walnut Hill Antiques, Wendy Thiede and her Mom, Marge, show vintage antiques. Dick sets up a great pine back drop to hang up the paintings, maps, and primitives they carry. They also have a terrific display of decoys and fishing items. You can find many

small furniture pieces here too, all vintage and fine. You don't want to miss Country Peddler Antiques. Coach Schockmel again brought great smalls as well as fine china including majolica. He always brings just the right items. Another dealer new to the show was Larry Kaczmarek of Village Blacksmith Antiques. His large booth was full of smalls, great furniture, toys, prints and dolls. His sales were indicative of the fine quality of his goods. And we can't overlook our own Fern Chapman, of Indian Creek Antiques. Fern features lots of kitchen antiques, glass, china and small furniture. Son, Michael brings a great selection of guy stuff - great tools, potter and crocks. Diane Johnson, another dealer new to this show, brought a small round oak table with 6 chairs that sold right away as did an oak porch swing. She had a big selection of smalls, china, crocks, a wicker settee and much more. Pam Ewig's booth was an eye catching display. She had a cute black iron bed displayed on a white background! She also carries great Mexican silver jewelry along with country pieces, benches and smalls. Right next to Pam, was Sue Bergner with a stand out booth featuring a great oak bedroom suite and several small cupboards and tables. Always a greet looking booth. Ginny Romanski, also a new dealer, brought a great general line, including books, quilts, lamps, clocks and crocks. Ginny Wierman filled her large booth with a line of fine glass, advertising signs, a huge work bench, potter, a vintage spice set, smalls and lots of kitchen items. Her shelve units were jammed full with great pieces. A look around this show confirms that this was powerful up-scale show. The merchandise was above average, the displays beautiful and impressive. This was just a small report of this show. There were many more dealers. Overheard by me, "This is a great show and the merchandise is really fine quality". The U.N. Club had a bake sale as well as working to help set up the show and there was a luncheon available also. The show partially benefits Special Olympics. If you missed our great shows this year, plan ahead and come to the 2014 shows on: July 5 & 6, 2014 in Minocqua, WI at the High School. July 11 & 12, 2014 in Boulder Junction , at the Community Center August 30 & 31, 2014 in Minocqua, WI at the High School. For more information call 715-588-3665 or northwoodsantiqueshows.com
