Dear Friends and Neighbors: Welcome to the Spring 2017 semester of Milford Adult Education! We hope that you will be able to join us this semester for an interesting, informative and exciting night out. Our General Interest Program offers a variety of courses to meet your needs and interests. It is recommended to register early to insure placement in a class, many fill quickly and you don’t want to be left out! Browse our Table of Contents to find a class that is right for you. We also offer free Academic Programs designed to help those of you who need to further your formal education or who have immigrated to America. We have free ABE, GED, ESL, and Citizenship classes in the evening as well as during the day. We also offer programs in conjunction with the Milford Literacy Center. If you need to get your high school diploma, want to become a U. S. citizen, or want to improve your ability to read, write and speak English, then we are the place for you. GENERAL INTEREST REGISTRATION There are TWO ways to register for a General Interest class.

1) MAIL: Complete the Spring 2017 Registration Form and MAIL the form with payment to our office [Milford Adult Education Office, Parsons Complex, 70 West River Street, Milford, CT 06460].

2) IN PERSON: Drop off your registration in person at the Adult Education Office, located in the Parsons building. The Adult Education office is open on Tuesday – Thursday, from 9:00 – 12:00 noon. If the office is unmanned when you arrive, there is a locked drop box outside our office where you may deposit your registration materials. The box is checked several times daily. We suggest you complete your registration form before you arrive. Walk-in Registrations will be accepted from Tuesday, January 3rd through Tuesday, Jan. 31st. Course registration is on a first come basis. A late fee of $10 will apply to any registration received after this date.

GED/ESL/CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMMING: FREE! Classes ABE/Pre-GED, GED, ESL & Citizenship are Free to Milford Residents! The Milford Adult Education Program is sponsored by the Milford Board of Education in with regulations set forth by the State Department of Education and the statutes Connecticut.

M001 Adult Basic Education: ABE/Pre-GED This course is designed to strengthen basic skills to prepare students for enrollment in the GED classes. The class teaches basic math skills, grammar, sentence and paragraph structure and essay writing. Once these basic skills have been mastered, students continue to the GED class to prepare for the state GED exam. There is a $25 textbook deposit fee which will be refunded to you if your textbook is returned in good condition at the end of the session. Barbara Dooley Tues & Thur/6:00-8:30 p.m. Foran Rm 301

National External Diploma Program The West Haven Adult Education Department will be holding an information session for the National External Diploma Program (NEDP). Call them at (203) 937-4375 for information or to register. ©

M008-M010 General Education Development (GED) This course prepares adult learners for the fourpart, computer-based GED© exam to earn a State of Connecticut diploma. Students receive necessary instruction in each of four subject areas: science, social studies, math and language arts, plus basic computer skills to take the exam. Instructors will also review the official website, ged.com, where students can access related exam information and exam registration procedures.

Becoming compliance An American of the State of Citizen

Students must be at least 17 years old and officially withdrawn from school to enroll in the GED© preparation classes. To be able to register for the GED© exam, students must be CT residents, 17 years old, officially withdrawn from school for at least six months, and must submit a withdrawal form with a parent or guardian signature. Students who are 18 years old may submit, in lieu of a withdrawal form, a letter from their last high school that the class with which they entered ninth grade (or would have entered if never enrolled in high school) has already graduated. Students can begin the GED© registration process online at ged.com and complete the process in person at the Milford Adult Education office at 70 West River Street

M002 American Citizenship

All students must meet with the Director for academic counseling before registering for the GED test.

This course is divided into two instructional levels: beginner/ low intermediate and high intermediate/advanced. Classes are designed to help foreign born students learn to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills in English. Emphasis is on functional English in all facets of daily life.

This course is designed to prepare prospective United States citizens for the naturalization examination. There will be a brief overview of United States history, the Constitution and the three branches of federal, state and local government. Arts & Crafts Basic Woodcarving

Come Out and Clay

This is a great course for beginners with no experience. Learn the art of woodcarving and create tomorrow’s family heirlooms. This course will guide you from the basics through every step needed to finish your own hand-carved piece. All tools & materials included.

This class is designed for those who have an interest in creating functional and non-functional wares from earthenware clay. It will give you information on ceramic material properties, various processing techniques such as hand building, (coil, pinch and slab) and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Students will learn how to glaze and fire their work too. A $50 materials fee to be paid to the instructor at the first class.

Oil Painting – Still Life

This class is an extension of the beginners drawing class with emphasis on individual growth and style. Anyone who has basic drawing experience and would like to improve and strengthen their skills is welcome. You receive individual attention as well as basic technical applications in rendering, drawing methods, design and composition, the use of drawing reference as well as overcoming drawing problems. Mostly black and white, but all media accepted.

If you are looking to learn fundamental drawing, painting concepts and build confidence in your skills, this class is for you. Learn fundamental art elements such as value and space, perspective, composition, as well as color theory and art history. Be encouraged to develop your individual creativity and expression. Stained Glass

Flower arranging is much more than simply putting a bunch of flowers into a vase. Learn the basics to help you make flowers look elegant, professional and classy. The elements and principles of design and the mechanics of arranging flowers in vases, foam and handheld bouquets will be taught. Trust your own vision while you are creating a work of art. General Policies The Adult Education Program is operated by the Milford Board of Education under the provisions of the statutes of the State of Connecticut. The Milford Adult Education General Interest program is open to residents as well as nonresidents who are 16 years of age and older. To enroll in Basic Skills or GED classes, a student must be 17 and no longer enrolled in day school. Students who are at least 17 years old and have been withdrawn from school for six months and are CT residents are eligible to take the GED exam. ABE, GED, ESL and Citizenship are tuition free classes. Waiver of Responsibility

Refunds

Adult Education instructors are selected for their subject expertise. The Milford Board of Education and the Adult Education program do not promote the private services of the instructors nor endorse the companies with whom they are associated. Students are solely responsible for how the information provided in these courses applies to them.

Requests for refunds will be honored ONLY if requested by February 17. A processing fee of $10 will be deducted from the refund. Refunds will not be granted after the conclusion of the semester.

Parking Parking is permitted only in designated areas. Do not park in fire zones, handicapped areas, or in front of any doorway. Please be considerate. Violators may be towed.

School Closings

See the beginning of the catalog for important dates.

Classes will not meet when schools are closed for holidays, vacations, or bad weather. If the weather deteriorates during a scheduled school day necessitating canceling of evening classes, an announcement will be made on local radio stations and WTNHTV, Channel 8. WICC, 600 AM is our primary station.

Registration

Student Regulations

NO walk-in registrations can be accepted by any instructor for any class. All registrations must be made in advance through the Adult Education Office. January 31, 2017 is the last day of registration. After this date, a late fee is applied.

Smoking in any building or on school grounds is prohibited. Refreshments are permitted only in the cafeteria or designated areas.

Classes Begin

Location NO registration confirmation will be mailed to you; we will contact you only if your class must be postponed or canceled. Tuition and fees for each course appear with the course description. Milford Senior Citizens (60 years or older) will receive a reduction off the tuition of any course. Books and materials for all classes requiring same will be acquired by students at their own expense. See class descriptions.

Classes are held at the site listed under the course description. All activities offered are held in accessible locations. The administration reserves the right to limit enrollment, withdraw courses or discontinue classes at any time without notice.
