Middle School BREAKAWAY 2017 Information and Catalogue Breakaway is the Middle School equivalent of Lower School Experiential Days and Upper School Winterim. Teachers plan and offer a range of experiences. Breakaways should include learning something new. The learning could be a new skill or taking a new risk. Because we want students to try different things, middle schoolers are not allowed to repeat Breakaways. Breakaway’s Importance Breakaway is an important part of the Middle School program. Students are trying new things and meeting new people. Please do not plan family trips or vacations during Breakaway. A critical piece of the Breakaway experience is students working, doing, and learning with each other. When is Breakaway? Middle School Breakaway is from Monday, March 20 through Thursday, March 23. Please note that some of these experiences involve overnights and others are in-town experiences where students travel to and from school. Schedules may vary for these local Breakaways. If there is a special reason for your child to remain in-town, versus an overnight trip, please indicate this on the sign-up sheet, sign up for only in-town experiences, and contact Len Carr directly. Next steps This Breakaway catalogue includes a listing of all of the offerings with related details. Please discuss the offerings as a family and return choices to C&C advisors by January 9. Note that the sign-up sheet includes a place for student choices, as well as a line for parent/guardian signature. We work hard to ensure that they receive one of their choices. We also track past student choices for equity for students across the middle school grades. Student choices should be about the experience, not about what their friends are choosing. We challenge them to make choices based on their interests to grow and learn from the week. We are not able to switch students out of their assigned Breakaway groups. If there is disappointment, please let us know, and together we can help your child sort through it. Breakaway groups will be shared with students on January 24. Trip leaders will share schedules and itineraries, contact numbers, and packing lists, etc. as the trip date approaches. Please go through these lists carefully when they arrive. Trip leaders are the primary contact for their respective activities. All Catlin Gabel chaperones have student medical information, permission slips, and parent contact information with them. All trip leaders, including parent volunteers, have updated background checks on file with the school.

Breakaway 2017 Choices Out of town Breakaways Docksiders – Dale Rawls and Tom Tucker Come explore the world of wooden boats and art in the Victorian seaport of Port Townsend, Washington. We will contrast our maritime experience with time on the pulling boat, Townsend, a replica of a 26’ longboat like Captain Vancouver used to explore Puget Sound and the Schooner Martha. The Townsend relies on crew muscle and cooperation to move, while the Martha is a more modern schooner that relies on both sail and auxiliary power. The Maritime Center will teach us how to row (lots of rowing), sail and become a real crew. We will be staying at the Victorian Officers quarters at Fort Warden State Park. We will be cooking, singing and creating art, while making new Middle School friends. You must be twelve years old to be on the boat. We’ll leave at 8:30 am Monday and return Thursday at 5:30pm. Let’s Go Canada – Lynn Silbernagel and Greg Frye We will travel on school bus via the Blackball ferry from Port Angeles, WA directly into beautiful downtown Victoria, BC and enjoy four days and three nights exploring this quaint harbor town – the most British city outside of England. Our group will stay in a centrally located youth hostel and visit a museum, parliament buildings, and other local attractions. Our group will enjoy the scenic splendor of Victoria and environs including plenty of walking. Valid passports will be needed for this trip, as well as a notarized Travel Consent Form. This trip is a four-day trip to Victoria, B.C., Canada. Sleepless in Seattle – Lynda Douglas, Carol Ponganis and Kofi Obeng Learn the skills of an urban traveler as we utilize the train, light rail, monorail, charter bus, boat and our feet to experience Seattle! We will sleep in a youth hostel located near the Pike Street Market and use the Seattle CityPASS so that we can enjoy all that Seattle has to offer, from the Experience Music Project to the Seattle Aquarium to the Chihuly Glass Garden to the Space Needle and even a cruise of the harbor! And if we are not exhausted from running around town, we might even have time to watch Sleepless in Seattle while we are there! Our first day will be in town, practicing and preparing for our time in Seattle. This trip is one day in Portland and three-day trip to Seattle. Shakespearience – Chris Bell and Paul Andrichuk Enroute to Ashland on Monday morning, we will not resist the call of the wild from Wildlife Safari. Once in Ashland, we might enjoy activities such as physics fun at ScienceWorks, swimming to prepare our brains for enjoying theatre or exploring the beautiful town of Ashland. We will see two plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival: Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and Shakespeare in Love, plus take a multimedia backstage tour. We will stay overnight in a rented home within walking distance of the Festival. We will also attend a prologue for Julius Caesar, led by company members, so that students will be prepared for the play. This trip is a three night overnight in Ashland. The education department at the Festival feels these plays are appropriate for mature middle school-age students. We highly recommend visiting the Oregon

Shakespeare Festival website at http://www.osfashland.org for age recommendations and information. In-town Breakaways Dance Around the World – Deirdre Atkinson and Michele Hoang Join us on an in-town global adventure as we explore different cultures through dance and food. We will spend four days taking dance classes from around the world including Bollywood, African, Hip Hop, and Salsa. Each day we will embark into the great city of Portland to learn these dances and eat the delicious foods associated with each culture. We may also visit a dance rehearsal space and create our own flash mob to perform in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Come dance with us! This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. Sunsets, Selfies & Snowshoes: a Photography Workshop – Brendan Gill and Sue Basham Take breathtaking photos the professional way on high-end camera equipment while exploring the awe-inspiring locales of the Oregon coast and Mt Hood! Visit downtown photo galleries, talk to professional photographers, and learn how to see the way a camera lens sees the world. Learn lighting techniques in our portrait studio, perfectly frame the sun as it sets on the Pacific, and even capture wildlife in full frame brilliance with special lenses! Edit your best shots to bring out their true potential, and make large prints to take home! This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. Build A Whale – Larry Hurst Students, volunteer parents and Larry will construct a 70 ft. inflatable whale out of fabric. We’ll use the tennis court as the construction/assembly space all 4 days. On day 2 or 3 we’ll take spend half a day to go downtown by MAX to visit the PSU science building to see their grey whale skeleton as a reference. When completed, the whale will serve as a teaching and learning tool for current and future students. Catlin Gabel Escape Room – Barbara Ostos and Hedy Jackson Do you love games? Are you a designer? Are you a gamer? Do you like to do puzzles? Are you a pro at figuring out riddles? Have you ever been locked in a room with a group of people and had to puzzle your way out? Join this Catlin Gabel Escape Room Breakaway to learn about the psychology of the now very popular escape rooms, including creating a sense of urgency, the motivation of stress and time boundaries, and the power of teamwork. We will start Monday morning and apply teamwork, creativity, time management, curiosity, ethics, and resilience to escape a professional escape room. From there, we will work with professional escape room designers from Portland Escape Rooms to understand the most important elements when creating an escape room. After the learning stage of day one, we will turn our attention to building our own escape room on campus during Tuesday and Wednesday, with the goal of having a fully functioning escape room ready for groups to run through on Thursday, the last day of Breakaway. The goal is to invite staff teams on campus and parents to bring their

professional work teams to try to escape the Catlin Escape Room! We will work 8-3:15 pm each day. This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. Pendulum Aerial Arts – Holly Walsh, Gina Wand, Sydney Nagy and Pendulum Aerial Arts staff Aerial encourages creativity, personal growth, and physical fitness through aerial dance. Students will practice various aerial disciplines, improve strength and flexibility, and learn combinations and sequences. This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. Tinkering Studio – Rob van Nood and Matt Woodward We will be developing and building interactive games using all sorts of cool tools and electronic devices. This 4-day project has several parts: storytelling, physical and computer 3D modeling and Scratch programming. Using woodworking tools, your very own 3D Pen and Makey Makey, and your imagination we will build interactive board games that bring the real world and the digital world together in magical ways. Outcome: Kids will learn to use a variety of tools to develop and create an interactive board game. Participants will learn a variety of art forms through experiential learning and by creating them under the guidance of professional artists. They will create art for and from themselves and will step into the realm of the artist for 4 days. This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. Art Attack – Christa Kaainoa and David Ellenberg Let’s roll up our sleeves and get creative! In this Breakaway, we’ll take a variety of classes from local artists, create original artwork, and have a new masterpiece to take home at the end of each day! Activities will range from painting to drawing, to screen printing (designing & making T-shirts), to print making, and more. We’ll also sample delicious culinary arts at local restaurants and perhaps make some of our own culinary creations. We’ll have one night on the town to experience theater arts at a local play or performance. No artistic experience necessary – just a willingness to make a variety of art and let your creativity flow. This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. We’ll meet at school at 8:00 a.m. each day, and return to school by 3:15, with the exception of our one late night out. End of the Line – Paul Monheimer What’s on a MAX line? What’s the MAX Barn look like? Who decides station design? Who makes MAX decisions once the train is on the tracks? Riding around in the breeze! After acquainting ourselves with MAX basics, we will undertake a detailed exploration of MAX lines. Along the way, we’ll discover those living the life they please, station art, food carts, and, of course, a place to kick a ball or shoot hoops. How many MAX lines are there? We will attempt to ride them all! Middle Schoolers, GoPros, a MAX Train, food…think of the adventure! This is an in-town Breakaway with no overnights. PDX Outdoors! – Jesse Lowes and Kit Camp How lucky we are to live in the Pacific Northwest where the trees grow lush, the rivers run high, and the land around us from coast to mountaintop is buzzing with endless possibilities for

outdoor adventure. Come along on a four-day journey celebrating the wonders and beauty of this place we all call home. After a day of hiking, a day of white water rafting, a day of crosscountry skiing, and a day of zip-lining—all within an hour’s drive—you’ll be grinning ear-to-ear to call yourself an Oregonian.
