Introduction

Overview Masterclasses provide partners and customers a unique way to get acquainted with the reallife experiences of Microsoft consultants. Masterclasses are often scenario-based and can touch many products, of which an existing solid base of knowledge is expected from the participants. In this respect, Masterclasses are not like product trainings. For example during Masterclasses, experience in the field of architecture and deployment, scenarios, and cases is actively shared between attendees. During the Masterclasss Microsoft Consultants also share their experiences, tools & frameworks from earlier projects as well as best practices.

Target group There are different types of Masterclasses:  TechNet Masterclasses, for IT professionals.  MSDN Masterclasses, for Developers.  Business Masterclasses, for Business Consultants Management, or general advisory functions.

,

Content Content-wise Masterclasses go significantly in-depth (Level 300-400). In order to be able to cope with the expectations of all Masterclasses there are prerequisites which candidates must satisfy in order to take part in a Masterclass. This is to ensure that the level is pitched right for all attendees and so that they can maximize the value gained.

Introduction

Prerequisites, Microsoft Training & Certification Microsoft Masterclasses and have a high technical level (level 300-400). Without a sound product knowledge and experience of the participant, the Masterclass will not have the desired learning effect. Microsoft therefore recommends attendees to achieve the product certification for the level of a MCTS or MCITP. Detailed pre-requisites are listed in this catalogue on a per session base. For an overview of the official Microsoft product training and certification options, visit www.microsoft.com/learning . In the Netherlands such training and certification are provided by Microsoft Learning partners. These can be found here.

Session Level Descriptions To ensure that participants get the most out of each session, the technical level of the session has been included. Classification has been done in accordance with the classic undergraduate class model and the description of each level is listed below. 100 level: Is an introduction to the topic or overview. The 100-level assumes little or no expertise with the topic being covered. 200 level: Assumes 100-level knowledge and a fairly complete understanding of the features. The 200-level may discuss case studies that cover a breadth of common scenarios or explain how to use more advanced features. 300 level: Assumes 200-level knowledge and an in-depth understanding of product features in a real-world environment. The 300-level may go into unusual case studies that illustrate specific aspects of the product that are key to improving performance or interoperability. 400 level: Assumes the deepest level of technical knowledge we expect a participant to have. The 400-level are essentially expert-to-expert sessions. The content provides the means for customers to push products to maximum performance, achieve the broadest possible interoperability, and create applications using even the most advanced features.

TechNet Masterclasses Microsoft Services has a long history in creating and delivering Masterclasses. The transfer of knowledge and experience are a top priority for Microsoft Services and Masterclasses provide an excellent channel to contribute to this objective. At the same time they offer a unique way to communicate with partners and customers, enhancing their customer and partner experience. Microsoft Services Masterclasses are not ordinary off-the-shelf training courses but are created and maintained by the Microsoft Consultants themselves, drawing upon years of experience and expertise. Personally, I regard the fact that Microsoft Services allows me to share my knowledge and experience through the development and delivery of Masterclasses as one of the nicer aspects of my job. In the six years that I have been working as an Infrastructure Consultant I have had the opportunity to develop a Masterclass at least once every year: on great products such as Exchange 2010 for example. And right now my colleagues and I are working on the Masterclasses for the next version of Exchange and Office 365. I believe customers have much to gain from Masterclass participation. They provide a unique opportunity to gather knowledge and experience of the latest and greatest Microsoft products, in small groups. In addition, participants have the possibility to hear first-hand from Microsoft Consultants themselves how they believe the products should be designed and implemented. That sounding board function of a Masterclass usually provides information and insights that are not normally to be found in blogs, books or TechNet articles. Often, these insights are based on the experiences the consultant gained during the product’s pre-release test and implementation phases in so-called Rapid Deployment (RDP) or Technology Adoption Programs (TAP).

IT Capability

Windows 7

Desktop, Device, & Server Management

While Windows 7 is highly compatible with most of the applications written for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and their service packs, due to new innovations and tightening of security designed to increase reliability, some compatibility issues are inevitable. Windows 7 Application Compatibility for Enterprise is designed to assist enterprise customers in identifying and overcoming application compatibility issues that are barriers to deployment of Windows 7. This Masterclass is also available as a 4-day course for single-customer audiences. During the recommended two day extension, we will address the most critical applications blocking deployment using advanced techniques learned in the first two days. Additional on-site and remote remediation can also be scheduled.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

Customer development teams who are preparing to test applications which are required to run on Windows 7. Enterprise customers preparing to upgrade to Windows 7 and who are running or developing critical line of business software that should be tested for compatibility prior to deployment.

BUSINESS NEEDS: Windows 7 Application Compatibility for Enterprise is recommended for you if you are writing applications for, or are migrating existing applications to, Windows 7, and you need to assess these applications for compatibility issues.

BENEFITS: You will gain the knowledge and skills you need to assess compatibility between your applications and Windows 7. You will also learn about best practices for detecting and resolving certain known issues related to Windows 7 compatibility and will learn about solutions to some of the more common compatibility issues.

 

SYLLABUS: Day 1 – Windows 7 Application Compatibility Fundamentals Learn to recognize and understand the most common compatibility issues and those issues that present the greatest barriers to deployment of Windows 7. Topics include: User Account Control (UAC), Windows Resource Protection (WRP), Session 0 Isolation, OS and IE8 Versioning problems, and more. The first day is designed to help you learn to recognize at least 80% of the compatibility issues you may encounter. Day 2 – Windows 7 Application Compatibility Tools and Techniques Introduces ACT 5.5, Standard User Analyzer, LUA Buglight, Shims and other tools and techniques to help diagnose and begin to resolve most application compatibility issues with Windows 7. You should come away with an understanding of how to choose and use the right tools for different scenarios. You will also get some hands on practice and the resources you will need to start helping your customers or testing your applications right away. Days 3 and 4 – On-site Diagnostic Assistance (optional) For private (closed) deliveries, the Masterclass can be extended by up to 2 days of on-site assistance in diagnosing and resolving application compatibility issues.

 PRE-REQUISITES:  An understanding of Windows internals, Windows applications, Windows security, Win32 API, etc are an advantage, as is experience with Windows 7.

 Customers who have already attended the Windows Vista version of this Masterclass, or who have already thoroughly 

tested and remediated their applications on Windows Vista, need not attend this Masterclass. However, a shorter, custom, engagement may still be appropriate, since application compatibility issue can still arise. For the optional on-site assistance, several applications (typically around 10), that are experiencing compatibility issues with Windows 7, must be identified in advance.
