Selected Research Papers

 “An Analysis of Salvatore Sciarrino’s Orchestral Work: Giorno Velato Presso Il Lago Nero (per violino e orchestra)” (2015)  “Tonnetze, RI-chains, and Klumpenhouwer Networks: A Compositional Approach” (2014)  “Mode, Motive, and Memory: The Role of Deformation in the First Movement of Schubert’s String Quartet in G Major (D. 887)” (2014) – an analysis of the first movement of Schubert’s famous quartet, studying how the deformations in his normal practice create compositional impetus in the work.  “Musical Depictions of Corruption – Aschenbach’s Downfall in Death in Venice” (2014) – an analysis of Benjamin Britten’s opera Death in Venice.  “Intellectually Emotional - The Influence of Schoenberg and Berg on the Music of Benjamin Britten” (2014) – a follow-up paper that builds on my previous Peter Grimes paper, where I further study Britten's use of these atonal techniques within his own extended tonal style.  “Imperceptible Influences: The intermingling of popular music and film music in 1960 and beyond” (2013) – details the origin, adoption and apparent cross-influence of chord progressions that would appear in popular music and film scores in the 1960s and 1970s.  “Channeling Tristan: The Origins of Horizontal and Vertical Synthesis in Schoenberg’s First String Quartet” (2012) – as a follow up to my previous Peter Grimes paper, this paper traces the history of horizontal and vertical synthesis back to its first use in Schoenberg's Op. 7 quartet. It details what appear to be hidden quotations/references to Wagner's Prelude to Tristan und Isolde within the opening of Op. 7, suggesting (along with hints in Schoenberg's own writings) that Wagner's Tristan chord was direct inspiration for Schoenberg's idea of horizontal and vertical synthesis that would lead to his techniques of “free atonality”.  “An Analysis of Iannis Xenakis' Nomos Alpha” (2012)  “Deconstructing Peter Grimes” (2011) – this paper details the apparently original discovery that Benjamin Britten took Schoenberg's techniques of horizontal and vertical synthesis (from Schoenberg's “free atonal” period) and applied these techniques within his own extended tonal music.  “Grief, Desire, and the Tristan Chord: An Analysis of the Prelude to Tristan und Isolde” (2011)  “An Analysis of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony” (2010)  “An Analysis of J.S. Bach’s Cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (BWV 80) (2010)  “Analysis of S’il estoit nulz (M6): An isorhythmic motet by Guillaume de Machaut” (2009) Film Scores  Before You Die – micro-short film, dir.
