METAL CONSTRUCTION FOR SPORTS AND LEISURE DEVELOPMENTS
In many ways UK Athletics and Euroclad have shared objectives in providing the best environment for our athletes to develop their skills and achieve at the highest level. The playground to podium philosophy of UK Athletics embraces a ‘sport for all’ approach regardless of age, ability or background. Fundamental to achieving these objectives is the provision of high quality, functional and inspiring training facilities, stadia and supporting infrastructure.
2
It is easy to underestimate the effect that construction products can have on the suitability of sporting facilities but it is a vital component in the efforts to drive up performance and raise standards in every event, every region and every age group.
Euroclad has a great track record in the construction of facilities for the sporting community in the UK. They can feel proud that they play an integral role in creating the quality of environment where people can enjoy participation and strive for excellence.
And with London set to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012, there has never been a more exciting time for UK Athletics, as all eyes will be on athletics and especially the British athletes competing on home soil.
Lynn Davies Olympic Gold Medallist and President of the UKA
FOREWORD At first glance Hotel, Sports and Leisure buildings may not seem to share common design and construction challenges. Look closer and you’ll see that they share many requirements. Hotels must look good but provide good thermal and acoustic performance and will often incorporate gyms, swimming pools and conference rooms. Taking it a step further some hotels even have their own screening rooms, like the Courthouse Doubletree in London’s Regent Street with its 94 seat private cinema. This might seem like a far cry from the terraces of your local football or rugby team but it’s not just the weather that is considered in modern stadium construction. Every sports club wants their fans to be proud of their home ground. Combine desire to engender pride, with the requirements for conferences and corporate hospitality, and the result is a need for attractive, practical, high-performance buildings. Leisure centres and private gyms share similar requirements for looks and performance, along with leisure and entertainment hubs like the ones seen in redeveloped docklands across the UK. Whatever the visual or performance objectives of hotel, sports or leisure facilities, the extensive range of Euroclad products will deliver superb aesthetics combined with class-leading acoustic and thermal performance.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE
Euroclad products have proven thermal performance with typical constructions modelled and tested to adhere to, or exceed, Building Regulations. The flexible nature of systems means that the changes to Building Regulations Part L will cause no problems for Euroclad site assembled systems. Constructions have been engineered to adapt to any reasonable requirement so that individual building needs can be satisfied. A dedicated 3D modeller is employed to digitally construct building details which can be interrogated to provide accurate 3D imaging showing thermal performance.

An investment in excess of £2million has been made in an automatic rollforming machine referred to as the ‘Revolver’ line. The equipment loads coils of up to 10 tonnes and feeds sheet material through 24 banks of forming rollers to produce 60m of finished product per minute. Running continuously at full capacity the machine would be able to produce over 80,000m2 of roof, wall or liner profiles per day. The Revolver line toggles between the four most popular profiles by switching the sets of rolls which are arranged like points on a clock face on each bank. The selected pattern clicks into place in just three minutes – a process that can take up to two hours on a conventional machine. Finished product is stacked by batch, automatically packaged using recyclable packaging materials, and labelled with a unique consignment number, its sequence as part of a larger order, the customer and destination. Facades products are modelled in 3D before being converted into manufacturing instructions and transferred electronically to the cutting and routing machinery, automatically devising the most efficient use of sheet material to minimise cost and waste. Certain products can be site manufactured; providing curves, tapers and exceptionally long sheets to achieve attractive, functional roofs in aluminium standing seam, steel secret fix and the new Vieo traditional-looking roof. As part of its commitment to quality and service Euroclad operates a Quality Management System approved to BS EN ISO 9001:2000. Euroclad continues to enhance its wide range of products and high levels of manufacturing excellence; building on the quality inherent in its construction systems and production processes.

QUALITY
DELIVERY
Delivering the right products on time is fundamental to an efficient and effective build schedule. Euroclad has a proven track record in this area with dedicated logistics transporting finished products across the length and breadth of the UK, ensuring proficient and reliable delivery. Vieo, Secret fix SF500 and the Euroseam standing seam roof system can benefit from site production of the outer sheet. There has even been investment in a lifting assembly and remote control operation of the rolling mills to enable product to be manufactured at the eaves of a building and rolled directly onto a roof. The advantages are numerous with a significant reduction to risk:
• Less handling therefore sheets are unlikely to be damaged in transit • Very long sheet lengths can be produced without the need for special transport arrangements. 13m is the longest length sheet that can be transported in a standard shipment but 126m sheets have been produced onsite
• No waiting around for product to be delivered. It is manufactured onsite precisely where and when it is needed
• Sheets can be rolled at the eaves of the building directly onto the roof for the ultimate in convenience.

FUTURE INNVESTMENT AT CARDIFF BAY
Superior performance and aesthetics resulted in Euroclad winning the contract to supply rainscreen cladding for Future Inns UK’s flagship four-star hotel in Cardiff Bay. The group’s 200-bedroom, seven-storey hotel features 2000m² of LINEAR rainscreen facades in silver metallic and charcoal grey. Offering all the benefits of Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) the panels’ 0.5 mm thick aluminium skins, which are laminated to a non-combustible mineral core, are up to 15% lighter than solid aluminium sheeting but with equivalent rigidity, excellent colour uniformity and superior flatness. Installed over 100mm duoslab Rockwool insulation on pre-cast concrete block walls, the LINEAR panels were produced in nine different module sizes. Such flexibility ensured the system’s compatibility with various interfaces such as glazing and integrated louvre systems. Cladding panels were also specified for a faceted architectural feature on the exterior of the hotel restaurant. Chosen for superior panel flatness, the system combines the aesthetics of modern bi-modular systems with superior thermal and fire performance. Both Euroclad cladding systems were installed by Bristol-based contractor, M. H. Massey. The main contractor was Midas Construction and the Architect Atkins, Walters and Webster.

Ravenscraig, the former home of Scottish steel making, is being transformed into the first new town the UK has seen in more than fifty years. A major part of this multi-million pound redevelopment is a new sports centre. Euroclad has supplied 22,000m2 of roof and wall cladding which formed a thermally efficient envelope on the sports centre. The products are applied in an unconventional but visually effective way with diagonal cladding providing impact and individuality. A series of roofs of varying pitch deliver an interesting eruption at the centre of the building. Euroclad Elite Plus Systems 55 and 57 were specified on the walls with Elite Plus System 2 on the roof with a combination of perforated and solid liners. The systems come with a 25 year guarantee for the roof and wall assemblies.

Euroclad provided an exciting range of aluminium standing seam roofs at the K2 sports and leisure complex in Crawley, West Sussex. The design demanded several different standing seam roofs, of both convex and concave waveform curves in varying radii. K2 houses a wide range of facilities including an Olympic size swimming pool, a 12m high climbing rock, squash and badminton courts, indoor bowls rinks, and a large multipurpose sports hall. The high specification building was constructed by main contractor Gleeson with roofing contractor S D Samuels. For the sports hall, a fully tested Euroseam system was chosen in order to meet specific acoustic requirements. While the roof of the swimming pool employs the same plain mill Euroseam as the sports hall, the sheets feature a smooth pre-curved ridge. Euroclad also provided a crimp-curved, perforated structural deck, which reduces the need for purlins, provides long spans and absorbs noise generated within the building. The Euroseam sheets were produced onsite, self curved to the radius of the roof, and lifted using Euroclad’s unique spreader beam. To aid the development of good working relationships and subsequent understanding between manufacturer, roofing and main contractor, Euroclad visited the site before production and during installation. Recent investment in Euroseam has culminated in a new onsite curving facility, manufactured tapers and even a system which allows the manufacturing unit to be lifted to the eaves and rolled directly onto the roof.

END TO END ACTION AT CARDIFF CITY STADIUM
Cardiff City Stadium is the new home of Cardiff City FC and Cardiff Blues rugby union team and was opened in time for the start of the 2009/10 season. The stadium is a striking landmark that was developed alongside a new retail park in the Leckwith area of the Welsh capital. 18,000m2 of doubled sided profiled steel was manufactured and supplied by Euroclad in Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® for the vast roof structure. The construction is one in a long line of stadia utilising Euroclad products; the Emirates stadium and the O2 Arena being two of the more recent projects with Euroclad involvement. Cardiff City Stadium is a 26,828 all-seated ground which includes conference facilities and private rooms and was built at a cost of £48million on the site of the former Cardiff Athletics Stadium. After the Millennium Stadium, it is the second largest stadium in Wales and is part of the Leckwith development which sprawls across 60 acres (240,000m2) and cost £100m in total. The overall development encompasses the new stadium, 47,000m2 of retail space with 13 major retailers including Asda, M&S and Mamas and Papas. A housing development on the site of Ninian Park is now planned as well as a brand new 70 room hotel with bar and restaurant. Infrastructure had to be improved to allow access which resulted in a new road system. The building is a coming together for system manufacturers Euroclad and Eurobond and unites Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in Goosewing Grey on the roof and Colorcoat Prisma® in Silver Metalic on the walls. The Confidex guarantee of up to 40 years is now available on Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® prefinished steel.

OLYMPIC STADIUM Euroclad Facades transformed manufacturing machinery to cope with the World’s longest sheets of Alpolic material and produced a full size rig to test handling, transport and application.
OLYMPIC STADIUM AND INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST CENTRE Euroclad has manufactured both the rainscreen cladding for the new Olympic Stadium and the entire roof for the enormous International Broadcast Centre (IBC) at the Olympic Park development in east London. The London 2012 Games are the catalyst for transforming 2.5km2 of land into a fully functional, exceptional Olympic Park. What was once industrial, contaminated land has been rapidly transformed over the past three years.

installation presented considerable technical challenges and the solutions proposed by Euroclad formed part of the successful bid by specialist contractor Prater. The LINEAR 2 system consists of vertical hook-on panels fixed at a 40° incline, which results in the panels being closer to the steelwork at the bottom than at the top. This required the construction of a full-size test rig at Euroclad’s facilities to trial the handling, transport and fixing of the system. The panel lengths of 7.6m were longer than any that have ever been produced using ACM; posing significant challenges to ACM manufacturer Mitsubishi, which had to produce 7.8m long sheets; the longest ever made. The 80,000-seat stadium is costing £496m to construct and is being designed and constructed by 'Team Stadium' consisting of Populous,

and planning consultant Savills Hepher Dixon. The roof of the IBC posed a different set of challenges. With a roof area of 27,000m2 and a requirement to manufacture 77m continuous length sheets directly onto the roof there were few places for roofing contractor Hathaway to turn. Euroclad offered the perfect solution with its Secret fix roofing system which was manufactured onsite in continuous lengths. A fully tested lifting rig and remote control manufacture meant that sheets

Mike Fallon, project manager at Kier (North West) said: “This is the first step of a much larger redevelopment of New Brighton. The Floral Pavilion is an exciting project to be involved with because of its striking design. It will be the first iconic building that visitors see as they approach Liverpool. We have been pleased with the materials that we used. Despite initial reservations, the rolling and bending onsite of the roof worked really well.
