This old variety originates in Friuli. Cultivated by the Benedictine monks in 1000 CE in the vineyards of the Abbey of Rosazzo. The last two remaining vines at the Abbey were saved from certain extinction thanks to recovery work done since 1978. The grapes of exceptional rarity and refinement produce a “luxurious” wine for ageing – as described by Dalmasso in 1930 – tannic and characterised by an intense bouquet. The production of this wine is very limited, in fact there are only 2500 bottles produced per year. Guerra Albano Pignolo has aromas of ripe red berries, blueberries and notes of spice. The palate is full and round with layers of fruit and tannins finishing with subtle oak characters. It is well suited to red meat and game dishes or aged hard cheeses.

Nero di Velluto, ‘Black Velvet’, is the flagship wine of the Feudi di Guagnano winery made from grapes of 65 years old bush vines and only produced in the best years. Nero di Velluto Negroamaro, made with partially dried grapes for around 30 days, similar to the Amarone wine, is an enticing wine which shows an amazing stewed fruit bouquet as well as some notes of sweet almonds and spice. The palate is big yet round and velvety while the finish is packed with juicy fruit, smooth tannins and somewhat lingering savory characters.

Coming from one the most classic of wine regions of Italy, Chianti Classico, is produced only from the best fruit of the Balifico vineyard and in limited numbers. The vineyard is located at 415 metres a.s.l., between the celebrated vineyards of Coltassala and Casanova. A blend of Sangiovese and 30% of Cabernet Sauvignon, Balifico is one of the first Supertuscans acclaimed by the international press. Gioia meaning ‘Joy’ is an example of a wine masterpiece produced only in the best years and with a very limited production of 2700 bottles. The epicurean wine of Volpaia winery is without a doubt ‘Il Puro’ meaning ‘The Pure’ is a 100% Sangiovese Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, produced on their signature vineyard, the Casanova. This wine is made from the very low yield of their 60 Year Old vines grown in the rich lime and sandy soils providing both great structure and depth to the wine. One of the re-trained Sangiovese clones in the vineyard dates back to 1944 and the only one remaining in this region. The grapes are meticulously selected and after a slow fermentation, the wine spends 18 months in new French Allier Oak barrels. Il Puro is extremely refined on the nose expressing fresh notes of cherry, violet with hints of vanilla and leather. The palate is elegant soft and full with a lingering fruit driven finish.
