FAMU MEN’S B ASKETB ALL FIRST LOOK BASKETB ASKETBALL gram On The Rise Rattler Hoops 2016: A Pro Program At first blush, the FAMU Men’s Basketball team will be facing another challenging campaign in 2015-16, looking to improve on last year’s rugged 2-27 finish. THE RA TTLERS A T FIRST BLUSH… RATTLERS AT Second year head coach Byron Samuels, who was hired in midJune a year ago, and had to build a roster from scratch over the summer, will be heading into the 2015-16 season without three key contributors from last year’s squad: guards Jermaine Ruttley (17.4 ppg, 6.7 rbs, 62 assists, 46 steals – all team highs) and Jorge Rosa (11.3 ppg, 55 of 168 three-pointers), who both left the program; and forward Quentin Bastian (8.0 ppg, 4.5 rbs), who graduated.

RETURNING VETERANS Samuels will have eight returnees from last year’s squad to build around, led by 6-3 sophomore point guard Craig Bowman (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who averaged 7.6 points and 2.6 rebounds, while ranking second in assists (57) and steals (35), and 6-9 senior forward Emamuel Pellot (Puerto Rico), the club leader in blocked shots (22), while averaging 3.4 ppg and 3.6 rbs. Other key returnees include 6-9 senior center Mario Karailiev; 610 sophomore forward Jordan Jackson; 6-4 sophomore swingman Jonathan Spicer, and 6-3 sophomore guard Dalvin Roberts. THE NEWCOMERS Top newcomers for Samuels and the Rattlers will be Malcolm Bernard, a 6-6 junior guard, who sat out last season after transferring from Charleston Southern; 6-8 JUCO transfer forward Trey Warren (Hillsborough CC); and a quartet of freshmen: 6-9 forward Francois Lewis (Orlando Edgewater HS), 6-8 guard Nick Severado (Savannah, Ga./Jenkins HS), 6-1 guard Justin Ravenal (Decatur, Ga./Green Forest HS) and 6-1 guard K’Ja Johnson (Douglasville, Ga.). THE SCHEDULE FAMU opens the season Friday, November 13 against Johnson University in Tallahassee, the first of an array of non-conference foes, which includes Houston, UTEP, Abilene Christian, Troy (Ala.), Kennesaw State, Samford, North Florida, Jacksonville, Southeastern Louisiana and FIU. The Rattlers open MEAC play with on Saturday, December 5 against South Carolina State,. The Rattlers remain under NCAA sanctions due to the program’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) score, which restricts practice time and bans them from postseason play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament and the NCAA Tournament.

BYRON SAMUELS Head Men’s Basketball Coach Florida A&M University * 2nd Year Appointed in June of 2014 as the Rattler Men’s Basketball coach ,Bryon Samuels had the unenviable task of rebuilding a FAMU Program from scratch in 2014-15, putting the experience gained from a 27-year college coaching career to work. Now in his second season, the ever-optimistic Samuels has the Rattler program poised for a surge to the thick of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title chase in 2015-16. Samuels, came to FAMU from the University of Georgia, where he was the Basketball Operations Coordinator, a role he had served in since June of 2013. While at Georgia, Samuels directed a number of tasks, including oversight of the players’ day-to-day schedules and their academic performance, as well as assisting with the program’s on-campus recruiting efforts, summer camps and community outreach. A native of Winston-

Samuels left Hampton in 1997 to join his college coach, Jerry Green, as an assistant on Green’s staff at Tennessee. In each of their four years at UT, the Vols earned NCAA Tournament berths, highlighted by an SEC co-championship and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2000. Salem, N.C., Samuels has fashioned an extensive coaching resume spanning 12 schools in 27 years. His career experiences include three head coaching posts, two at four-year schools, and one in the junior college ranks. Samuels’ first head coaching job came at Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Hampton University. During his two-year stint (1995-97), he helped the Pirates with their transition to NCAA Division I status. His teams broke 14 team and individual records, and both of his recruiting classes were ranked No. 1 in the MEAC.

Samuels was the head coach at Radford University from 2002-07 after serving one season there as an assistant coach. His tenure with the Highlanders included an appearance in the league’s tournament championship game, as well as several player and team accolades, both on the court and in the classroom. Over the entirety of his coaching career, Samuels helped guide seven teams to postseason bids. In addition to the four Tennessee squads, teams at Washington State, Georgia and Tulsa earned NIT berths. .

Prior to his stint at Georgia, Samuels served two years as Assistant AD and head coach at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa (2010-12), after working as an assistant coach at South Florida for two seasons (2007-09). Before coming to UGA, Samuels founded a nonprofit mentoring organization, and was a board member and area repre-

sentative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years. Samuels’ coaching career also includes assistant coaching tours at Washington State (199495) and UNC-Wilmington (1990-91 and 1992-94), as well as graduate assistant posts at Tulsa (1990) and Western Carolina (1989).

Management from UNCAsheville in 1986, and a master’s in Education from Western Carolina in 1990. SAMUELS PERSONAL: Samuels is married to the former Beverlyn Wright. The couple has two children, a daughter, Eryn (22), and a son, Evan (16).

Samuels holds a B.S. degree in Personnel

2015-16 SEASON RECAPS

Bowman, Newcomers Lead Rattlers To Friday Night Rout FAMU wins first home opener since 2007 in breezy style TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 13) – The Florida A&M Men’s Basketball team hosted their first season opener at home since 2008 Friday, and made a serious splash at the Al Lawson Center in a breezy 103-71 romp over the visiting Johnson (Fla.) University Suns. FAMU coach Byron Samuels was all smiles as his charges used solid defensive pressure to create fastbreak opportunities to start the runaway Friday night, forging a 51-30 lead at the break on 51.3 percent shooting, while holding the Suns to 29 percent from the floor. “We played with great energy tonight,” Samuels said “and our defensive intensity helped create some offensive chances for us. “Plus, us having a chance to open at home for the first time in eight years was big for us, and our guys fed off the home crowd without question. Opening at home is something we are going to try to do in the future too,” Samuels said. The Rattlers ran the floor at will, thundering down at least a half dozen

dunks to get the crowd of over 893 going early. FAMU placed four players in double figures on the scoring parade, led by Malcolm Bernard with 17 points and eight rebounds, Craig Bowman with 16 points, Isaiah Omoregie with 14 points and Justin Ravenal with 12 points. In the second half, the Rattlers continued their hot shooting, cashing in on 51 percent of their floor shots to stay ahead of the Suns, 52-41.

SUNDAY Rattler Cagers Fall At Southern iIllinois, 81-51 Newcomers Bernard, Lewis lead the way for FAMU CARBONDALE, Ill. (Nov. 15) – The FAMU Men’s Basketball team dropped its’ first game of the season here Sunday after-

noon, falling 81-51 to Southern Illinois University in an opening round game of the early season MTE Basketball Festival. Florida A&M (1-1) was very much in the game in the first half, trailing by just 13 points, 39-26 at the half, but the Salukis (2-0) shot 53 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Rattlers.

Freshman forward Francois Lewis led FAMU with 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Malcolm Bernard added 13 points in Sunday’s game. Anthony Beane of SIU, led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Armon Fletcher with 11 points, and q10 points each from Sean O’Brien and Bola OCaniyan. and Bernard grabbed seven.

WEDNESD AY WEDNESDA Ber nard leads F AMU with 29 Bernard FAMU points in nail-biting win o ver ov Thomas U U.. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 18) – The Florida A&M Rattlers (2-1, 0-0 MEAC) held off a late surge by the visiting Night Hawks of Thomas University for a 70-68 nail-biter in front of 1,071 in the Al Lawson Center tonight. Malcolm Bernard had the hot hand for the Rattlers, carding 29 points on 9-of15 shooting from the field and 10-of-14 shooting from the free throw line. Bernard’s play was key to the Rattler offensive assault, which was aided by guard Craig Bowman, who scored 13 points and Francois Lewis who chipped in 12. Jordan Jackson wiped the boards for 10 rebounds. Lewis pulled down eight

TU was led by Adonai Rogers who carded 18 points to lead the night Hawks. Javoris Cooks was the only other Night Hawk in double-figures, with 13 points. Rogers led the team on the boards with eight rebounds on the night. FAMU head coach Byron Samuels used the game as a teachable moment. “I would much rather have a two-point win that a one-point loss. Last years, I’m not sure our team would have found a way to win this game,” Samuels said. The Rattlers shot 35.7 percent from the field in the first half and 43.5 percent in the second half. The inconsistency from the free throw line is what kept TU in the game. FAMU shot 15-of19 from the charity stripe in the first half, but an errant 10-of-18 in the second half, allowing TU to creep back into the game after big runs by the Rattlers. “Basketball is a game of runs and we were going back and forth. We just wanted to play team ball and run through our sets and stay together,” Bowman said. Bernard, echoed Bowman’s sentiments. “They came ready to play, they were fiery, they were up in us and they came prepared. We, as a team, had to stick together and play hard and get the win,” he concluded.
