READINGS FOR December 6 First Reading — Stand on the heights, Jerusalem; see your children rejoicing that they are remembered by God. A merciful and just God leads Israel in joy (Baruch 5:1-9). Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading — May your love increase in knowledge to discern what is valuable that you may be blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel — John proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:1-6). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Advent is a time rich in family traditions. Many of them have been so effectively absorbed into our culture that their religious origins are hidden. Some of us will set

candles in our windows tonight. The custom began in Ireland during the so-called “penal” days, extending from 1691 to the “Catholic Emancipation” in 1829 and beyond. There were harsh penalties and fines for not attending the government church. Priests were forced into hiding, but people were resourceful and determined in guarding their faith. At Christmas, Irish families, particularly in the countryside, placed a lighted candle in the cottage window and left the door unlatched, hoping that a priest might come by and celebrate the Christmas Mass for them. The possibility of the Mass coming into the family home gave rise to other Irish customs at the beginning of Advent. The cottage received a fresh coat of whitewash, the threshold was swept especially clean, and fresh curtains were hung in the windows. The house was scrubbed until it gleamed, including all the pots and pans, and all garments and table linens were laundered. The custom of the Irish window candle was so admired in Catholic Europe that it was widely copied there, and now finds a welcome in households that may not exactly expect a priest to wander in!

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him.

A special invitation won’t you please say "yes"? All baptized are called to the service of Christ in the community of the Church. We share in the priesthood of Christ and, after the ordained, we are called to service in duties of our own. The current needs are for ministers to serve in these roles: • Lectors, who proclaim the scripture in the first and second readings at Mass. • Extraordinary ministers, who distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Communion. • Welcomers, also known as ushers and greeters, who greet and help assemble the congregation and take up the collection. Please! We need your help! You can enhance your spiritual life and our Eucharistic liturgies with as little as one hour commitment of your time a month. You can choose the Mass at which you wish to serve. You can be young or mature. Materials and training will be provided.

Catechists Needed! Have you ever thought about being a Catechist, but have never given it a try? Have you been a Catechist and have decided you want to do it again? Do you love your faith and want to share it with others? We have the answer for you! Our Religious Education program (CCD) is seeking enthusiastic people who want to set younger hearts on fire with the love of God by sharing their faith. We are in need of Catechists on Wednesday (grade 5th) and Thursday (grade 8th) evenings. Classes on Wednesdays are held from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. and Thursday classes are held from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. For those who may not be able to commit to every week but would still like to be a catechist, we are also in need of substitutes throughout the year. Please pray and see if God is calling you to be part of this ministry. For information or to volunteer, please contact Mac Karaban, Pastoral Associate, at (847) 966-3269, or via email at [email protected] THANK YOU!!

For info call Deacon Larry Skaja at (708) 714-6732 or fill out the form below and place it in the collection basket.

Bóg wzywa was i mnie również każdego dnia! Adwent pomaga nam, aby Boża miłość i miłosierdzie mogło przyjść do nas, po to, aby nas uzdrowić i uczynić nas pełnymi. W naszej podróży rozpoznajemy nasze słabości i obsesje i próbujemy pozwolić im odejść, aby znaleźć nasze prawdziwe ja. " Daj mi poznać drogi Twoje, Panie, i naucz mnie Twoich ścieżek!" Psalm 25:4. Parafia daje również wiele możliwości do zabawy! Dlaczego jest to ważne? Jesteśmy wspólnotą miłości i pojednania. Mikołaja Kopernika, Harcerze i Sportowcy) to wszystko świadczy o owocnej posłudze w Świętym Janie Brebeuf dzięki naszym hojnym dobroczyńcom. Tak wielu z was, wspiera nasza parafie Świętego Jana Brebeuf. Ten stały strumień obietnic modlitewnych i intencji, darów i talentów służy wsparciu naszych duszpasterstw, czego wyrazem są tez darowizny finansowe, których jestem dumny. Bez twojej pomocy, nasza zdolność do głoszenia Ewangelii będzie ograniczona.
