Memguard Introduction
The Memguard MCB distribution system, SPN or TPN, offers a wide range of thoroughly-proven outgoing and incoming device options for the control and protection of individual electrical sub-circuits in industrial and commercial installations. Outgoing devices include: 3kA and 6kA SP, DP and TP MCBs with amperage ratings 10A-100A. MCBs are available in the range of automatic plug in type for use in Memguard distribution boards and custom-made equipment. 3kA MCB/RCDs with amperage ratings 10A-40A and 30mA sensitivity. This device can be used where both overload and earth fault protection is required in a single unit, and has the advantage of only occupying a single outgoing way on any Memguard distribution board. Incoming devices include: 100A DP or TP isolator which have a double break on each pole. Access to the cabling terminations is easily achieved by the removal of the snap-on protective cover. 40A, 63A and 100A RCDs. These units are offered either as the main incoming device or in conjunction with a main isolator. Memguard offers a comprehensive range of distribution boards covering the vast majority of specification requirements. All units are designed to the general requirements of BS5486: Part 12 specifications for factory-built assemblies to ensure maximum protection to installer and user in both domestic and industrial applications. The wide range of consumer units, distribution boards, and multipole boards is constantly increasing, while continuous development has resulted in enclosures of more compact dimensions. All have been designed for maximum convenience of wiring and fitting and embody many benefits to increase electrical and mechanical efficiency, with extensive use of computer aided design and manufacturing techniques. Special care has been taken to ensure that the enclosures are clearly labelled to aid installers and give end-users adequate guidance on safety procedures. Circuit identification labels are fitted near the MCBs aperture and circuit wiring details are given inside the main cover. RCDs can be used on their own or in conjunction with isolators to give earth leakage protection to consumer units or multipole boards. Finally, split busbar consumer units and multipole boards are offered to allow the option of different RCD sensitivities on lighting and power/aircon circuits.

Memguard MCBs
3kA Miniature Circuit Breakers (240/415V AC) Eaton established range of 3kA MCBs is fully interchangeable. All Memguard MCBs have an over-centre handle mechanism which gives the contacts a quick break action. The mechanism is also trip-free which ensures that the breaker cannot be held against a fault. Double and triple pole breakers have an internal common trip mechanism as well as the handle tie bar. When the circuit has operated under a short circuit or overload condition, the handle of the circuit breaker moves to the ‘MID’ position.To reset, the handle must be switched to the ‘OFF’ position before switching ‘ON’ enabling the tripping latch mechanism to be reset. Cable terminations provided are: 10A to 32A - 2 x 6mm2, 40A and 50A -16mm2, 63A - 25mm2, 80A and 100A - 50mm2. Tested to BS3871 & also to UL 489 at 10kA breaking capacity 110 / 220V a.c. (NEMA AB1)

An Introduction To Residual Current Devices For Earth Fault Protection An aspect of circuit protection that has seen increasing usage and awareness in recent years has been that of earth fault protection through the use of earth fault circuit breakers known generally as earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs) or residual current devices (RCDs). The use of circuit breakers or fuses to protect the wiring installation against short circuits, overloads, and earth faults of excessive levels which will cause the protective device to operate have always been a feature of Wiring Regulations. However, it is a fact that earth faults can be of sufficient magnitude to be hazardous to life and property whilst being below the level that would cause the protective device to trip.
Types Of Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker There are two basic forms of ELCB which detect faults by two totally different methods:
Voltage Operated ELCB Type This is the original (and now virtually obsolete) type which measure the voltage between metalwork and earth and would trip if the voltage becomes excessive (normally 40V and above). This type of ELCB is susceptible to nuisance tripping by responding to faults in other installations sharing the same earth return path and its effectiveness can be severely reduced by parallel earth paths on the installation. The main drawback of this type of ELCB is that they do not provide any form of protection against shock for a person touching a live terminal or conductor. For these reasons, this type of ELCB is no longer recognised by the IEE wiring regulations.
Current Operated ELCB The Memguard range of ELCBs are of this type. They operate totally independently of any earth path by monitoring currents flowing through the live and neutral supply. Any leakage to earth from either live or neutral wires on the load side will be recognised by the ELCB as an earth fault and the unit will trip very quickly to isolate the supply.

They are therefore specified as additional protection against electrocution and/or fire resulting from heat generated in a faulty electrical installation.
The Role Of ELCBs The illustration shows the effect of continuous electrical current on the human body. Duration of an electric shock on the human body can be critical with current level and time being multiplying factors on the overall effect. Speed of disconnection is therefore of utmost importance and Eaton I MEM ELCBs will detect and operate within 20ms to 40ms. Selection of sensitivity of current operated ELCBs can be a difficult decision. Medical evidence suggests that 30mA sensitivity will provide almost complete protection and Memguard ELCBs are available at this rating. However, in practice, such high sensitivity can result in nuisance tripping from transient leakages in cookers, aircons, fridges, and other apparatus. The dangers resulting from a whole house being put into darkness may be greater than the shock risk. Some authorities believe 100mA provides the best compromise when a single RCD is used to protect a number of different sub circuits. However, Memguard distribution boards allow the fitting of 2 or more ELCBs to protect different groups of circuits with the obvious options of different

Both Memguard single phase and multipole distribution boards are available with the option of high performance RCDs in place of or in addition to incoming isolators. This is vital where it may be necessary to ensure a higher degree of protection against fire or shock risk than is provided by the use of overcurrent devices alone, or to provide additional earth leakage protection to one or more separate power circuits in a split phase board. Our range of RCDs has been tested to IEC61008 and may be specified in 40A and 63A double pole form for consumer units, and 40A, 63A and 100A in 4-pole versions for multipole boards. Rated tripping currents (sensitivity) for both types are 30mA, 100mA and 300mA. These sensitivities are easily identified on the more common 40A and 63A units by following the colour coding below: 30mA - Green 100mA -Red 300mA - Blue Ordering references are based on the following system: (i) The first letters denote the range name, i.e. AMM for 40, 63 and 100A. (ii) The next numbers denote current rating, i.e. 40A, 63A or 100A. (iii) The next letter denotes the number of poles, i.e. 2 or 4. (iv) The final letter denotes the rated tripping current, i.e. 30mA = H, 100mA = M and 300mA = L An example: 40A, 2 pole 30mA RCD = AMM402H To specify factory fitting, order as in the example below: ‘4DAOS complete with AMM402H’ or ‘41DBOS complete with AMM1004M’. 1. As with standard MCBs, the operating handle has a centre tripped position to identify the faulty circuit. The mechanism is trip free to prevent the breaker being held closed against a fault. 2. 30 mA trip sensitivity on all units for optimum protection with trip test button to check operation. 3. Overload and fault condition operating characteristics in accordance with BS3871 Section 31-C and BS4293. 4. Plug in facility for ease of installation in Memguard consumer units and distribution boards. Single pole width to ensure maximum use of busbar ways available. Terminal capacity is 16mm2.

Consumer units are type tested on BS5486: Part 13:1979. Ingress protection category of enclosure is IP30. 34mm dia. incoming knockout provided along with 4 to 13 off 20.5mm dia. outgoing conduit knockout dependent on enclosure size. All units with the standard height of 210mm have 3 off 26.5mm dia. on each side. 100A terminal incomer CU has two 50mm2 block terminals. 100A DP main switch has AC21 duty to IEC60947-3 (BSEN60947-3) and cable capacity of 50mm2. 40A, 63A and 100A DP RCDs have 25mm2 cable capacity. 60A and 100A DP MCB incomers have 25mm2 and 50mm2 cable capacity respectively. Neutral bar has 50mm2 incoming cable termination along with a 16mm2 outgoing terminal for each outgoing MCB. An earth bar is supplied for the outgoing MCB ways in addition to a main earth terminal stud. Each unused SP outgoing way must be sealed with a blanking plate 1DCBP. The list numbers used above relate to surface mounted boards. Should a flush mounted unit be required then the suffix S should be changed to F, i.e. 4DASS becomes 4DASF for a flush version. Available in RAL 7004 with epoxy coating.

Split Busbar Consumer Units (SPN 40A/63A/100A, 240V AC) The split busbar arrangement allows separation of the power and lighting circuits. Each busbar can be fed by an RCD to allow different ratings and protection levels. In each case an integral main switch is fitted for isolation of all circuits. The first number in the catalogue reference refers to the number of lighting circuits or the lower busbar and the second number refers to the number of power circuits or the upper busbar. List numbers for the surface mounted units shown here use the suffix’S’. To order flush mounted, change the suffix S to F, i.e. 4DAOF. All unused ways must be sealed with a blanking plate 1DCBP. Split Busbar Consumer Units (SPN 40A/63A/100A, 240V AC) The split busbar arrangement allows separation of the power and lighting circuits. Each busbar can be fed by an RCD to allow different ratings and protection levels. In each case an integral main switch is fitted for isolation of all circuits. The first number in the catalogue reference refers to the number of lighting circuits or the lower busbar and the second number refers to the number of power circuits or the upper busbar. List numbers for the surface mounted units shown here use the suffix’S’. To order flush mounted, change the suffix S to F, i.e. 4DAOF. All unused ways must be sealed with a blanking plate 1DCBP.

RCD available in 40A, 63A or 100A ratings, 30mA, 100mA or 300mA sensitivity. See page 5 for ordering system. Multipole distribution boards (3phase, 4wire) will accept combinations of SP, DP or TP plug-in MCBs as shown on page 3. Multipole distribution boards are type tested on BS5486: Part 12:1979. Ingress protection category of enclosure is IP30. 41/51mm dia. incoming knockout provided along with 1 off 33mm, 1 off 26mm and 8 off 21mm dia. outgoing conduit knockout are available at each end of all enclosure sizes. 100A terminal incomer DB has 50mm2 incoming cable capacity. 200A terminal incomer DB has 150mm2 incoming cable capacity. 100A TP main switch has AC21 duty to IEC60947-3 (BSEN60947-3) and cable capacity of 50mm2. 200A TP switch disconnector has AC21 duty to IEC60947-3 and a cable capacity of 95mm2. 100A G-frame MCCB incomer is type tested to IEC60947-2 and has 70mm2 cable capacity. 160A and 200A F-frame MCCB incomers are type tested to IEC60947-2 and have a cable capacity of 95mm2. 40A, 63A and 100A 4P RCDs have 25mm2 cable capacity. 60A and 100A DP MCB incomers have 50mm2 cable capacity. Neutral bar has 50mm2 incoming cable termination along with a 16mm2 outgoing terminal for each outgoing MCB. An earth bar is supplied for the outgoing MCB ways in addition to a main earth terminal stud. Each unused SP outgoing way must be sealed with a blanking plate 1 DCBP. The list numbers used above relate to surface mounted boards. Should a flush mounted unit be required then the suffix S should be changed to F, i.e. 41DBSS becomes 41DBSF for a flush version. Available in RAL7004 with epoxy coating.

3 Phase Split Busbar Units The split busbar arrangement allows separation of circuit groups. Up to four busbars can be fed by individual RCDs to allow different ratings and protection levels on each circuit group. In each case an integral main switch is fitted for isolation of all circuits.

Distribution Boards For Non-standard Applications
The product illustrated below incorporates two multipole busbar sections, the lower being fed direct from a main 100A isolator and the upper busbar being fed via a triple-pole MCB and four-pole RCD to provide combined earth leakage and overall overcurrent protection.
The unique design of Viscount allows many non-standard arrangements of busbar systems and incoming devices to be produced to meet specific customer requirements. One of the more frequently specified derivatives is shown below and serves as an excellent example of the level of complexity which can be achieved in the Viscount product range.

RCD available in 40A, 63A or 100A ratings, 30mA, 100mA or 300mA sensitivity. See page 5 for ordering system. Multipole distribution boards (3phase, 4wire) will accept combinations of SP, DP or TP plug-in MCBs as shown on page 3. Multipole distribution boards are type tested on BS5486: Part 12:1979. Ingress protection category of enclosure is IP30. 41/51mm dia. incoming knockout provided along with 1 off 33mm, 1 off 26mm and 8 off 21mm dia. outgoing conduit knockout are available at each end of all enclosure sizes. 100A terminal incomer DB has 50mm2 incoming cable capacity. 200A terminal incomer DB has 150mm2 incoming cable capacity. 100A TP main switch has AC21 duty to IEC60947-3 (BSEN60947-3) and cable capacity of 50mm2. 200A TP switch disconnector has AC21 duty to IEC60947-3 and a cable capacity of 95mm2. 100A G-frame MCCB incomer is type tested to IEC60947-2 and has 70mm2 cable capacity. 160A and 200A F-frame MCCB incomers are type tested to IEC60947-2 and have a cable capacity of 95mm2. 40A, 63A and 100A 4P RCDs have 25mm2 cable capacity. 60A and 100A DP MCB incomers have 50mm2 cable capacity. Neutral bar has 50mm2 incoming cable termination along with a 16mm2 outgoing terminal for each outgoing MCB. An earth bar is supplied for the outgoing MCB ways in addition to a main earth terminal stud. Each unused SP outgoing way must be sealed with a blanking plate 1 DCBP. The list numbers used above relate to surface mounted boards. Should a flush mounted unit be required then the suffix S should be changed to F, i.e. 41DBSS becomes 41DBSF for a flush version. Available in RAL7004 with epoxy coating.

3 Phase Split Busbar Units The split busbar arrangement allows separation of circuit groups. Up to four busbars can be fed by individual RCDs to allow different ratings and protection levels on each circuit group. In each case an integral main switch is fitted for isolation of all circuits.
