Bonbeach Life Saving Club Nippers Report Season 2011/12 3Bonbeach Life Saving Club’s Nipper season for 2011/12 ran from opening night Friday 18th November 2011 until our presentation night on Friday 16th March 2012. Our season consisted of 15 regular training weeks; down by 3 weeks from last season but still up from the 13 weeks of season 2009/10. We continued to improve our attendance at LSV Carnivals; although the first carnival at Williamstown was cancelled due to poor weather, we had 5 juniors attend Cosy Corner at Torquay and then we fielded a fabulous 30 nippers at our regional qualifier at Mentone. From Mentone three Bonbeach Nipper teams qualified for the State Championships; U9 girls Board Relay (Ellie Mansell, Matilda Perret, Isabelle Walterfang), U9 girls Wade Relay (Ellie Mansell, Matilda Perret, Isabelle Walterfang, Bianca Thomas) and U10 boys Wade Relay (David Lewis, Bence Balasz, Lachlan Colquhoun, Max Reindel). For once the weather was kind to our Friday nights and we had consistent nippers turn out each week to train and enjoy the beach. After skipping a year we once again had our “Friday Friendly” interclub training night at Bonbeach LSC; in gorgeous conditions nippers from Aspendale LSC, Carrum LSC, Seaford LSC, and Frankston LSC joined us for nipper events where everyone got a (paper!) ribbon and stayed with a smile even as it got chilly when the sun went down. A special thank you must go to our Patrol Captain Carmen Puskas and Board Memberwho organised water safety using our cadets and patrollers for nipper training nights and the Friday Friendly – nippers wouldn’t be possible without the support of our senior club members! Registered Nippers By the end of season 2011/12 we had 59 registered nippers (age 5-17) regularly attending Friday training: U6’s = 10 (plus the same again in siblings running with their parents!), U7’s = 22 nippers (we retained almost 100% of our U6’s from the previous season), U8-10’s = 15, U11-14’s = 12. This was an increase of over 50% from the previous season. Our average attendance was 47 nippers on the beach, with our smallest night of 37 being the first night back after the xmas break, and on our hottest night we counted 70! All groups catered for families who became members at different stages over the course of the season – indeed we had late season memberships being requested as late as March. We continued to gain nippers whose families were willing to travel from outside our immediate area; we kept the

Balasz family from Endeavour Hills, gained the Potter family from Ferntree Gully who had participated in lifesaving previously, and a few just popped up from Frankston or from other local suburbs. We again had several successful social nights running with our nipper program. Secret Santa is always a hit and this year our littlies were very excited to see Santa arrive by IRB.

We also had an excellent end of season movie night in the school holidays – around 20 families joined us for pizza and popcorn – all superbly organised by Adam Benton thank you very much! It was encouraging to note that we doubled our consistent numbers in the U8-10’s and U11-14’s age group; these age groups are difficult to retain as commitment clashes develop but they are important to us as the next generation of young lifesavers who will get their SRC then Bronze Medallion. If we can grow these groups we will be able to provide a better age split, but in order to do that we’ll need more coaches – I continue put the request out to our members to consider whether they might be able to step up and support our juniors! Carnival Bonbeach Nippers continued to develop their LSV carnival skills this season, despite the carnival season having the first event cancelled and then several of the subsequent events being out of our geographical reach. U7-8’s Ryan Talbot and Banjo Perret, and U9’s Ellie Mansell, Matilda Perret and Isabelle Walterfang all attended Victoria’s largest junior carnival at Cosy Corner Torquay in January. They enjoyed good weather, and the chance to participate in large groups in challenging events including a 1km sand and cliff face(!) race, and the girls first attempt at the surf race open water swim format for nippers.

Matilda Perret sets up for flags at Cosy.

Ellie Mansell takes off in the surf race.

Isabelle Walterfang finishes strongly.

As stated above we fielded the most Bonbeach nippers at a regional LSV carnival that we have in years with our 30 competitors at Mentone in February; despite being the first week back at school we had heaps of first timers have a go, and for the first time were able to field proper teams in set events. We also discovered that many regional events were team qualifiers only which made for a frustrating day for some of our U10+’s but they (and their parents!) stuck it out and we all gained valuable experience. This is a good reason to bring a friend in your age group to Bonbeach in the

coming season so that we can make the numbers needed for teams. When we have so many nippers enthusiastically attending LSV carnivals our club water safety and official commitments also increase. We were lucky to have Shannon Maher answer our call for water safety at Mentone (Thanks Shannon!) or we wouldn’t have been able to compete – both Adam Benton & I had to do water safety on the day, in addition to age managing, in order for us to fulfil our commitment to the carnival rules. We were given an exemption from having to provide a registered official on the day (as Bonbeach don’t yet have any!) but we are unlikely to get this again in the coming season. Please parents and club members consider having a go at some of these skills – they’re not onerous and will ensure we can continue to participate. Finally, on what seemed to be the worst wet-weather weekend of the year, our U9 girl’s board relay team and U13 Dean Wilson attended the State Championships at Lorne. Unfortunately our boys and girls wade relay teams could not attend. Whilst our girls board relay team didn’t get to complete their event due to the wild weather (along with 90% of the rest of the field), they did get to practice and attempt the event. Also, it was exciting to listen as the U13 Boys Iron event was broadcast up and down the beach as Dean Wilson fought his way to within moments of winning, just challenged into second place in a thrilling Iron final. Again, I had to provide water safety on the day, so a big thank you to Janine Perret for age managing the girls and donning the black and white cap to be their board handler as they ran out of the water. A great experience for our crew to share in the coming season, we were proud to be there and keep Bonbeach represented as we enter our 80th year.

Ellie and Isabelle prepare their boards in the motel!

Awards In order to be eligible for end of season awards at Bonbeach LSC nippers needed to have attended at least 6 out of 13 training weeks to receive their certificate, and at least 8 out of 13 training weeks plus 1 LSV carnival to be considered for medals and awards (excluding U6’s). Coaches Our coaches are all Bronze Medallion patrolling members of our club. They all hold multiple positions within the club and give freely of their time to ensure that nippers at Bonbeach LSC can continue. Please thank them and consider joining us as we develop our next generation of lifesavers. U6’s Dawn Walterfang, U7’s Adam Benton, U8-10’s Stephanie Thomas, U11-14’s / YIPs / U18’s Mike Booker YIPs YIPs stands for those young lifesavers who are active cadets at the end of nippers. We started this in 2009/2010 and unfortunately didn’t have the resource person we needed to keep it going last season. LSV are relaunching this for season 2012/2013 and we will seek a co-ordinator directly to fill this role. Wish List Please members put up your hand if you can help us with personel and or goods: Extra coaches; need an extra for U7’s or this group may need to be capped. Need an extra for Stephanie’s middle years group, and an extra for Mike’s big kids! Assistant coaches would be a starting point. Age Manager’s; we need a minimum number of these depending on our nipper numbers. It’s a short fun course and means we can operate safely. Qualified Officials; LSV will help us get there this season. We must have some people put themselves forward for this – again not difficult and directly relates to quality of sport for nippers. YIPs co-ordinator; this would be ideal for a club member who wants a discrete role that will be easy to administer. Young adults to young at heart older clubbies required! Water Safety; essential for week to week running of nippers. Swim Course ropes, anchors and floats; this season LSV is ready to help us ensure our nippers can swim set distances safely. To achieve this we need to easily and accurately measure our distances from knee deep water. A rope course or two would make this very easy to set up. General Beach Course Markers; bollards, traffic cones… suggestions welcome. Thank You Thoughts This year it was very clear that I needed more people as I tried to do age managing, co-ordinating, water safety and nipper advocacy. Once again we will endeavour to address this in the coming season; please say yes if we approach you! I must give huge thanks to our coaches Steph, Adam & Mike who turn up week-in week-out and just keep the ball rolling. Your enthusiasm is what keeps us going… & thanks to partners Lloyd, Kerry, and Deb who just chip in whenever we need anything. Thanks to Cath Wilson for continuing to run the canteen even as Dean reaches his cadet years, and to David Wilson for continuing to organise the boat to keep our older nippers on track. Thanks to Campbell Jordan, David Gazzo, Carmen Puskas and all our seniors who put in for water safety at a moments notice – we’ll keep trying Campbell!

My personal thanks are extra special ones for my family: my kids Isabelle and Jordan have to be at nippers no matter what else is going on! My husband Shane who loses me to lifesaving, nippers and summer every year and chips in whenever necessary! And to my mother-in-law Barbara who really is chief washer and all around good egg when it comes to all those little messy jobs that no-one else is quite ready to do! Bonbeach Lifesaving Club nippers program is on a roll – get on board and enjoy the ride!!
