Every day we work side by side with our neighbors in the communities we serve to ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. This handbook serves as your guide to get to know your Y and all it has to offer. As a member, you are entitled to a variety of programs and services designed to help you strengthen your spirit, sharpen your mind, and build your body. Personal training, yoga, massage therapy, group cycling, weight management, aquatic exercise, and swim lessons are just part of what you will find offered at your local YMCA. No matter what your age or fitness level, the Y has something for everyone. As a community-based, charitable and collaborative organization that is volunteer-driven, the YMCA derives its strength from its community roots and strong volunteers. Through collaborations with schools, hospitals and other non-profit organizations, we are able to further enhance and expand the programs and services we offer. As a Y member, you will belong to a health movement. You will support the Downtown Cleveland community through social service initiatives, preventable disease programs, and youth achievement programs. No other gym compares to the impact the Y makes on individual lives and communities each and every day. The Y gives back to individuals in need through the Annual Campaign that supports scholarship program, because no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. In addition, you will have access to over 40,000 square feet of wellness services including:

Sometimes, it’s more convenient for members to utilize a Y in a different location when traveling, near a workplace or in another region. Full facility YMCA members have the flexibility to use other Y facilities throughout Ohio, at no extra charge. Simply present your active YMCA membership card and photo ID at any participating Ohio YMCA.

African Dance

African Dance is an innovative new way of movement and physical fitness through the art of African contemporary music and dance. Instructing a variety of demographics in solely strengthening large muscle areas, flexibility, and endurance to different genres of both African and American music. Creating an atmosphere for clients to gain more comfort, confidence, and happiness while achieving an effective calorie burning modified dance lesson and workout.

Bollywood/Bhangra Dance

An Indian dance inspired by Bollywood movies. A lively dance class set to the vibrant and powerful rhythms of bhangra music and the driving beat of the dhol drum.

SilverSneakers® Classic

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support. This class is open to ALL YMCA members and is suitable for beginning-to-intermediate exercisers.

Ab Lab

Our instructors have designed a high-energy workout that effectively targets the entire abdominal and back region. Crunch it into your busy schedule and mix it with some cardio to get results that you will be AB-solutely crazy about.

Boot Camp

Calling all diehards - drop and give me 20! This total body workout contains sports conditioning moves, calisthenics, and invigorating drills based on speed, power, and agility. Utilizes multiple strength training techniques with an emphasis on functional core strength. This class will help you tone while burning fat.

Fitness After 50

Using music from Sinatra to Swing to the Supremes, this comprehensive class has low-impact cardiovascular conditioning, muscular strength work, and flexibility and range-of-motion exercises. We also do exercises designed to improve balance, coordination, manual dexterity, and agility (both physical and mental). Your heart, lungs, muscles, balance, and energy will all improve – and you’ll have lots of fun along the way!

Pound®

Pound® is the latest fitness trend. This drum inspired workout gives you a way to burn calories, get out extra energy/frustrations, and tone the body.

Tai Chi For Arthritis/Health

Specially designed Tai Chi class that has been shown to improve your joints. This program is also good if you want to prevent arthritis.

Evidence-Based Chronic Disease Prevention and Support LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

As a cancer survivor, you know the tremendous toll the disease and its treatment can take on your spirit, mind and body. You want to begin to heal and reclaim your health. But where do you start? LIVESTRONG at the YMCA can help. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on you – the whole person – not the disease. The FREE, 12-week program meets twice a week for 90 minutes. Traditional exercise methods ease you back into fitness and help you maintain a healthy weight.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program

If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, or believe you may be at risk for developing the disease, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you develop a healthier lifestyle and work with you to reduce the risks this condition can pose to your health.

The Real You Weight Loss Program® Are those extra pounds hiding the real you? Join The Real You Weight Loss Program! It’s the only large-scale program of its kind, and it’s exclusively at the Y. BOSU CIRCUIT

Our BOSU Circuit will encourage you to experience moves that will work you from head to toe. Our instructor will progress you from core to cardio with the BOSU, as well as strength training.

TRX®

TRX training draws on leading-edge research and best practices from the military, pro sports, and academic institutions couples with our seasoned team’s experience working with thousands of athletes, coaches, trainers, first responders, subject matter experts, professors, and service members in all branches.

Boxmaster®

The Boxmaster® is a new form of boxing style conditioning for all user levels. The Boxmaster® encourages greater boxing style fitness participation. Each pad is set-up specifically to replicate different styles of punching, allowing the participant to throw any combination of punches.

Kettlebell

Kettlebell training builds long lean muscles, improves strength and power for the entire body through explosive swinging movements, as well as traditional squat and press exercises.

Active Older Adults

There’s no better place than the Y for active older adults. Are you an empty-nester, looking to or already retired, wanting to reconnect with your neighbors and community? You’ll find a variety of ways to stay or become healthy and engaged at the Y. Exercise classes are designed for all levels and abilities, with chair and gentle options as well as full range of motion and standing classes. Your local Y offers a variety of classes that may include: Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Cardio and Strength, EnhanceFitness™, Silver Sneakers®, Spinning® and Zumba®

Water Activities The Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA features a 25-yard lap pool with depth ranging from 3’ 6” to 5’. Temperature is typically 84 to 86 degrees.

Swim Lessons with the YMCA Swim Academy Learn to swim safely through YMCA Swimming Lessons. Lessons are available for children and adults starting at 6 months of age! Group lessons as well as private lessons are available.

Masters Swimming

Love competitive swimming? Come and work out with our coaches up to three times per week. Work outs will focus on stroke refinement and improving speed as well as endurance.

Lap and Open Swim

Lap swim time is available for you to come and workout at your own pace. Open swims are available for you and your family to enjoy the pool together.

Adaptive Lessons

Swimming Lessons geared toward children who need a smaller group setting due to special needs. The instructors work with the children at their level encouraging them to become the best they can.

Lifesaving Courses

This American Red Cross Safety class teaches the fundamentals of lifesaving. Upon successful completion, students will have the skills needed to be a lifeguard.

Massage, Acupuncture, and Chiropractic Services When you need some time to “relax,” look no further than the YMCA. The Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA offers massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services. Examples of massage styles include: • Deep Tissue • Sports • Prenatal •Myofacial • Neuro-muscular • Reiki • Reflexology • Swedish/Relaxation. Wellness Center Rules We strongly recommend all members participate in an equipment orientation or First Free Workout program prior to using any fitness equipment.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland as an organization is committed to the principles of caring, respect for others, personal responsibility, integrity and honesty. All members and guests are expected to reflect these values in their personal conduct toward staff and other members and guests.

Members and guests under the age of 13 are required to be under the direct supervision of an adult at all times. Certain areas of the YMCA are restricted by specific guidelines regarding age as indicated by the following policies:

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland retains the right to deny access, or suspend or cancel a membership when a member’s conduct is determined to endanger the safety of others or interfere with another member’s enjoyment and reasonable use of YMCA facilities.

Wellness Center Policies

Grounds for Denying Access or Membership

• Wipe down equipment after use. Disinfectant and paper towels are provided for your convenience.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland reserves the right to deny access or membership to any person who:

• Be considerate. Limit use of cardiovascular equipment to a maximum of 30 minutes when others are waiting.

• Has been convicted of any crime involving sexual abuse or other sexual offense. • Is a registered sexual offender or sexual predator.

• When using the strength equipment please be courteous to other members and do not sit on the machine between sets. Be considerate and allow members to “work-in.”

• Is intoxicated or exhibits signs of misusing narcotics or dangerous drugs.

• Please return weights, magazines, mats and other equipment to their designated spaces.

• Is currently suspended or terminated per the ‘Grounds for Suspension or Termination’ listed below.

• Report any malfunctioning or broken equipment to a staff member immediately. • No food. Only beverages in spill-proof containers are permitted.

Grounds for Suspension or Termination

• No coats or bags in the Wellness Center. Please lock up all personal belongings in the locker room.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland does not tolerate inappropriate, threatening or harassing behavior including but not limited to: • Use of profanity.

• Wear appropriate workout attire. No boots or sandals permitted.

• Destruction of property.

• Cell phones permitted in the Wellness Center for use as music players only. No talking on phone, texting, Internet usage, e-mail, or camera use permitted.

• Sharing membership card. • Theft.

• Youth under the age of 9 are not allowed to be in or use the Wellness Center or Free Weight equipment at any time.

• Being in possession or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Sexual misconduct. • Disorderly conduct. • Physical fights.

Locker Rooms

• Verbal or other forms of harassment.

• Children  of the opposite gender, ages 3 and older, must use the family locker room with a parent/guardian. • Do not bring valuable personal items into the facility. A lock does not guarantee the safety of your belongings. The YMCA is not responsible or liable for items damaged, lost or stolen.

• Nudity in the lounge area of the locker room. • Selling or promoting products and services without YMCA of Greater Cleveland authorization. • Any behavior that is determined to be unacceptable by the YMCA, and detrimental to those we serve.

• Youth ages 9-12 may only use cardio machines and circuit strength machines in the Wellness Center under direct parent/guardian supervision at restricted times and locations designated by the branch. Use of free weight equipment is prohibited. Youth must successfully complete a Youth/Teen Orientation and their parents must sign a waiver. Anyone appearing under age without proof of age and/or parent will be removed from the Wellness Center.

Such conduct will be grounds for the immediate suspension or termination of membership. No refund will be issued. A $30 fee will be charged for all returned checks. Members will be placed on financial suspension until their obligations are fulfilled.

MEMBER INFORMATION 17. No band-aids, bandages, or open wounds in the pool.

• Teens ages 13-17 do not need direct parental supervision if they have completed the Teen Fitness/Weight Room Orientation class and submitted a waiver signed by a parent. Please see the branch Wellness Center staff for policies dealing with teens and free weight equipment.

18. No food, beverages, or gum in the pool area. 19. N  o recreational face masks, fins, snorkels, balls or floatation devices. 20. Only YMCA-approved flotation devices are allowed.

• The YMCA is a family place, so please refrain from the use of inappropriate or profane language.

21. No lifejackets in the deep end unless in supervised YMCA Program. 22. No playing, sitting on stairs, guard chair, or ladder.

Open Swim & Family Swim

23. Emergency equipment is for lifeguard use only.

YMCA members 18 years and older may use the pool during any scheduled Adult Open or Adult Lap Swim time. Lap Swim is for continual lap swim only. Due to facility needs, Open Swim times may change without notice. Youth under the age of 9 must be directly supervised by an adult while using the swimming areas. Children who cannot pass the deep water safety test and must wear a life jacket or be within arms reach of an adult at all times.

24. Parents are responsible for supervision of children. 25. No street shoes on pool deck. 26. Lap lanes are for lap swimming only. 27. Circle swim when there are more than 2 swimmers per lane. 28. Do not hang on lane lines.

Hot Tub/Spa Rules

Pool Rules

1. T  he spa / whirlpool may only be used by members age 18 and older only.

1. Swim only when a lifeguard is present. 2. The lifeguard has full authority over the pool and word is FINAL!

2. Pregnant women, elderly persons, and persons suffering from conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, respiratory problems, should avoid exposure to high heat and humidity and not enter the Spa.

3. All Children ages 12 & Under must be accompanied by an adult in the pool area and participate in a swimming skills assessment and will be provided a green or red wrist band for that day. 4. All Children ages 12 & Under who do not pass the deep water safety test must wear a red wrist band, remain in the shallow end of the pool, and be directly supervised by an adult 18 years or older, within arm’s reach.

3. Do not use while under the influence of alcohol or medication which your physician has determined to be dangerous when used under heat and humid conditions. 4. Wait at least 5 minutes after exercising to cool down before entering.

5. All Children 12 & Under who do not pass the deep water safety test and who do not meet height requirements must wear a Coast Guard approved lifejacket provided by the YMCA, remain in the shallow end of the pool, and be directly supervised by an adult 1

5.Please show respect to others by showering before entering the spa/whirlpool. 6. Only appropriate swim attire is permitted in the spa/whirlpool. No street clothes, rubberized or plastic clothing permitted.

6. One adult can be responsible for no more than 3 non-swimmers. 7. All non-swimmers must remain in the shallow end and wear a red wrist band.

7. Do not use alone or do not use without supervision or another person present.

8. Only swimmers who have passed the deep water safety test that day will be marked with a green wrist band will be allowed in the deep end of the pool.

8. Do not exercise in the spa/whirlpool. 9. Long exposure may result in nausea, dizziness and fainting.

9. All swimmers must shower before entering the pool.

10. Shaving is not permitted.

10. O  nly appropriate swim attire is permitted in the pool. No street clothes, rubberized or plastic clothing permitted.

11. No food or drink allowed.

11. If you hear one long blast of a whistle, please clear the pool immediately. 12. No running on the pool deck.

13. Observe reasonable time limits of 10 to 15 minutes. Then leave the water and cool down before returning for another brief stay if you wish.

13. No diving in marked shallow areas, only in specified deep areas.

14. Do not use if water temperature is greater than 104 F (40 C).

12. No newspapers are permitted in the spa/whirlpool.

14. N  o jumping or diving off the starting blocks unless in a supervised YMCA Program. 15. No pushing, dunking, “chicken fights”, or horseplay. 16. Breath-holding contests are prohibited.

MEMBER INFORMATION Sauna and Steam Room Policies

Group Fitness

1. The spa and sauna may be used by members 18 and older only.

Value-added land exercise classes are available to members at no cost. Additional fees may apply to specialty classes. Members ages 13 and above may participate in adult classes. Unless specifically designated, youth ages 12 and under may not participate in adult-level classes.

2. Pregnant women, elderly persons, and persons suffering from heart disease, diabetes or high or low blood pressure should not enter the spa without medical consultation and permission from their doctor.

Water Aerobics

3. While using the sauna or steam room, please sit on a towel or wear shorts. Proper attire is required.

Value-added water aerobics classes are available to members at no cost. Additional fees may apply to specialty classes. Members ages 13 and above may participate in adult-level classes. Unless specifically designated, youth ages 12 and under may not participate in adult-level classes.

4. Observe reasonable time limits (that is, 10 to 15 minutes), then leave the area and cool down before returning for another brief stay if you wish. 5. After using the sauna, shower before returning to the pool or hot tub.

Membership Card

6. Shaving is not permitted in the sauna or steam room.

New members will be issued a YMCA ID membership card. Members must present their membership card at the Member Services Desk each time they enter the facility. Lost cards may be replaced at the branch for a fee of $15. The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has the right to suspend or cancel a membership if a member shares his/her membership card, if the member’s behavior or language is judged to be in conflict with the welfare of members or staff, or is in conflict with the YMCA’s mission and values.

7. No rubber suits allowed in the sauna or steam room.

Program Registration Members may register for youth and adult programs two weeks prior to the start of any particular session. All registrations are taken at the Welcome Desk. Members participating in free, drop-in classes are not required to register. You may reserve a place in some classes that have limited capacity.

Clothing & Attire Shirts and shoes must be worn at all times. Appropriate shirt, athletic shoes and shorts or pants are required for the fitness facilities. The YMCA staff reserves the right to deem what is appropriate. Street clothes, non-athletic shoes and open-toed shoes and sandals are not permitted. Swim suits are required for all aquatic programs. Cut-offs are not permitted in the pool. The YMCA is a family place. Inappropriate or offensive dress will not be tolerated.

Program Fees Program fees represent the cost of providing program activities or services not included in membership dues. Program fees must be paid in full at the time of registration in order to guarantee your spot in the program.

Credits/Refunds

Tobacco Policy

Refunds will not be issued once a program session begins, unless warranted by a doctor’s note stating a valid medical reason. There are no refunds or credits due to inclement weather, loss of utilities or other incidents out of the YMCA’s control.

YMCA of Greater Cleveland facilities are tobacco-free environments. This includes parking lots and playing fields. We ask that if you need to use tobacco products you leave the YMCA premises before doing so.

Personal Training

Cell Phone Policy

Make-up Class Policy

The use of cell phones is limited to designated areas within YMCA of Greater Cleveland buildings. Cell phone use is strictly prohibited in the locker rooms and pool area. In order to protect the privacy of all members, the use of still and video cameras (including those on cell phones) is prohibited in all areas of the building.

Personal Training packages expire three months from date of purchase and are non-transferrable. Refunds are given with with a doctor’s note stating a valid medical reason.

Due to the limited student-instructor ratio, there are no makeup lessons/classes for missed classes or classes cancelled due to inclement weather. A credit will be issued to those with a medical necessity.

Membership Cancellation YMCA members may cancel their membership at any time. A written notice of cancellation, however, must be received by the membership office thirty (30) days prior to your next draft date to ensure no further debits to your account. Members who rejoin the YMCA more than 30 days after their membership was terminated are subject to paying another joiner fee.

Cancellation of Classes To ensure a quality experience for all participants, the YMCA may choose to combine or cancel classes due to low enrollment. If the YMCA cancels a class, a credit or refund will be issued.

MEMBER INFORMATION Medical Situation

If a member is unable to temporarily participate at the YMCA due to medical/health reasons, the member may place their membership in a medical cancellation and resume their membership when they are cleared by a doctor to return. Members must present a doctor’s note to cancel their membership for medical reasons, and when the member brings a doctor’s note clearing the member to return, we will reactive your membership. Members who return from a medical cancellation with the proper documentation will not be subject to paying another joiner fee.

Snow Bird Policy Members have the option to temporarily place their membership “on hold” for a nominal fee. On hold status requires a 30-day notice. Members may place their membership on hold for time frame between two months and six months, during which time the member will be charged 1/3 of their normal monthly membership fees.

Photos and Video Recording The use of audio, camera and video recording devices is prohibited in all YMCA facilities owned or leased unless there is implied authorization. Implied authorization is when a person is taking a picture, using an audio device or taking video of a member of their family, family friends or others from whom prior permission has been obtained while participating in a YMCA activity or event such as swim meets, basketball games, family events, graduation ceremonies, classes and the like. YMCA staff reserve the right to ask members or guests, who they are taking pictures of or recording during programs or activities to determine if there is implied authorization. YMCA staff or authorized designees of the YMCA when given authorization shall be allowed to use cameras or video recording devices to create promotional, educational or advertising content. To communicate with members and the general public, signage will be posted when this occurs and written authorizations will be required in special cases when a person is going to be the focus of a marketing piece.

GUESTS, VISITING OTHER Ys, AND USING THE NEW Y AS A MEMBER OF ANOTHER BRANCH Guests

Members 18 years of age and older and on an Adult and Family membership have the benefit to bring up to two guests per visit into the YMCA. Guests are permitted into the YMCA of Greater Cleveland if they are 18 years of age or older unless otherwise approved by branch leadership. Each guest may visit the Y up to three times per calendar year at no cost and $10 for each subsequent visit. All guests and vendors must register at the front desk with a valid state I.D. or driver’s license and agree to Y policies and procedures. All guests are subject to branch tour and membership presentation. Please contact the branch prior to visiting for updated policies and procedures. The YMCA reserves the right to deny access per our member code of conduct.

AWAY Program You may use your YMCA membership at other YMCAs across the state, country and world. Keep your valid card with you while traveling to verify your membership. A visiting AWAY member may be a guest at the YMCA of Greater Cleveland up to four times per month. Additional visits will cost $5.00 for individuals and $10 for family. Guest must present a valid YMCA membership card to receive AWAY benefits For all other Cleveland YMCA members access to Parker Hannifin Downtown Y requires a plus membership. Under the State of Ohio reciprocity program a $10 adult and $15 family monthly fee will be required (all programs at Parker Hannifin are included under Plus Memberships).

FREQUENT QUESTIONS How do I get there and where do I park? Get those steps in and walk or bike to the new Y! The new location is conveniently located in the NineTwelve District, near Playhouse Square, Public Square, the Gateway District, and downtown businesses and residences. Ample bike racks will be available outside the St. Clair entrance. The “Smile and Ride Free” C-line trolley loops directly in front of the Parker Hannifin Downtown Y (at E. 9th and St. Clair) every 15 minutes from Monday - Friday, 5:30 - 9 a.m. and 2:45 to 6 p.m. Find other Transit options on RideRTA.com or Google Transit. Parking is available in the Galleria parking garage accessible from Lakeside Avenue: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. is $3 per hour up to 2 hours. After 2 hours Galleria rates will be applied (up to $16 daily) Parking is free before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m., and on weekends for a two hour time limit, with validation from the Y. Adjacent outside lots, metered parking, and garages are also available.

2. If you begin to utilize the new Downtown Y more often than your current Y location (52% or more of the time), we ask that you transfer your membership to the new Y at the current membership rates. If your family participates in programming at a suburban branch, for example, their membership rate will remain the same as their primary branch.

We will provide free hand towel service to our members. If you plan to shower at the Y, please bring your own shower-size towel.

I have a SilverSneakers benefit. Can I still use the Downtown Y?

Lockers are available throughout the facility, including in the locker rooms, for daily use only. Please bring your own lock. Locks left on lockers after closing will be cut off.

If I am a member at another YMCA location, can I use the new Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA? Absolutely! You may use your Y membership at any Y in Ohio, in fact! There are just two important things to note for the Parker Hannifin Downtown Y, specifically: 1. If you are not already a Plus member, please ask your Membership Director to “Plus” your membership for just $10/ month for an individual membership or $15/ month for a family/household membership. A Plus membership will give you access to all programming at the new Y, and you will receive 50% off programming (fee-based classes, swim lessons, youth leagues) at your “home” branch.
