Dedicated conference city Helsinki hosts an average year of 100 international conventions attended by more than 25 000 delegates and 1 600 international meetings with nearly 100 000 delegates. Adding to that, there are innumerable national conferences, events and theme days annually. Helsinki is easy to reach by air, rail or sea. Around 40 airlines operate to Helsinki, and the Helsinki airport boasts more than 160 international landings daily. Only 30 minutes away from the city centre, it has been rated among the best by its users for many years in a row. With more time to spare, you could choose a picturesque ferry crossing either from Sweden, Germany, Poland and Estonia. Or for an easterly route, you may sample a 3.5 hour train ride from St. Petersburg or Moscow.
There’s an abundance of venues to meet your needs, whether it’s a 10 person meeting or a 10 000 delegate congress we are talking about. Naturally, all venues can be adapted for the special requirements you may have. Flexibility is an all-encompassing quality in our service. As you would expect in Finland, the technical infrastructure is always top notch, whatever your choice of venue is. Conference organizers can customise events as well as offer attractively priced packages.
The Helsinki night is filled with music, people and electricity. The city has an active nightlife throughout the year, and there is a good mix of styles to suit all tastes. Helsinki does not compete with other cities in terms of the amount of nightlife but rather its quality. A wide range of clubs and bars offers a choice of atmospheres and price levels. Helsinki also offers many stylish and unique venues for memorable gala dinners and banquets. High-quality restaurants, modern steel-and-glass spaces, historic brick-arch halls and other architecturally impressive banqueting alternatives are offered in all seasons. Especially popular in the summer months are the restaurants on the many islands in Helsinki’s archipelago. A variety of professional entertainment can also be tailor-made to suit the special event. Anything from classical Finnish music to hard rock hallelujah can be performed during banquets and dinners.
Big and small enough Compact in size, there’s only half a million inhabitants in the city itself. This translates into a relaxed, friendly and safe atmosphere that invites delegates to enjoy and to make use of their stay to the full. Practically everything in central Helsinki – hotels, restaurants, cafes, shops and sights – are within a walking distance. And if not in the mood for a stroll, you can always take a taxi or use Helsinki’s efficient public transports. Traffic in a city this small is a breeze compared to many. Language is not a problem either. As most Finns take it for granted that you don’t speak their language, they are glad to make use of their English or other European languages they master. Finland is in fact a bilingual country, the second official language being Swedish.
Accommodation for all The Helsinki region offers about 12 000 rooms with 18 000 beds in around 80 locations, ranging from first-class hotels to hostels for the more economically minded. Most are within 1.5 kilometres of city centre. The majority of international hotel chains, such as Best Western, Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Luxury Collection, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Radisson Blu, Scandic and Sokos, have presence in Helsinki. Usually breakfast and taxes are included in the room prices. Note, however, that official ratings aren’t used in Finland. The ratings provided in this manual are only approximate and are provided by the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau.
Touring before or after When the meeting is over or before it has even started, delegates may enjoy the numerous supplementary programmes and outings Helsinki and its outlying areas have in store. There are, of course, guided tours by bus, tram, boat or even by foot. Unguided, you may plunge into Helsinki’s active cultural life – exhibitions, museums, concerts, theatre or clubbing – whatever is the name of the game. If there’s more time to spare, Lapland and other areas of interest in Finland are easily reached by train or plane. Just as easy it is to have a taste of Russia... Or to make a day trip to Tallinn with 35–40 daily crossings to choose from. On top of that, excellent air and sea connections to Stockholm make the capital of Sweden an attractive choice, too.

Green meetings & corporate social responsibility
Tips for a green meeting in Helsinki
Helsinki’s tourism strategy, which is coordinated by the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau, highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility among tourism companies. These companies have a duty to act responsibly in all matters relating to finance, social issues and environment. At the Nordic Travel Fair “Matka 2009” the Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau signed the Helsinki Declaration alongside numerous other representatives of the travel industry to confirm our commitment to sustainable development. The City of Helsinki is concerned to promote green values and wants them to be considered in all activities taking place in the city. By offering congress delegates free passes to the public transport system the city authorities wants to enhance environmentally friendly transportation. The quality of tap water in Helsinki is excellent and has several times been tested to be of higher quality than bottled water. The city encourages meeting participants to use tap water instead of bottled water. The city also provides city bikes in different locations that can be purchased against a token. There are several hybrid taxis operating in Helsinki. When ordering a taxi, one can explicitly ask for an eco-taxi.
Most properties have implemented an environmental programme and have a very strict waste and recycling system. Environmentally friendly materials are favoured in many venues. For catering most venues favour reusable tableware instead of disposable dishes. Locally produced food is favoured in nearly all places. Several hotels also have bikes that can be used by the guests. A carbon footprint calculator has also been taken into use in several hotels and venues in Helsinki. The national Finnish airline Finnair flies Europe’s newest fleet. Operating with new aircraft cuts back on fuel consumption and emissions by 20 to 30 per cent. The airline also flies the shortest routes between Europe and Asia via Helsinki, reducing fuel consumption. Passengers and cargo are carried on the same flights. Between 60 and 80 per cent of Finnair’s landings in Finland are continuous descent approach landings that create fewer emissions. Finnair’s emissions calculator at feel.finnair.com/full allows travellers to check their personal fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by plugging in their departure and destination cities. 1. S elect a conference venue that involves the least amount of travel for participants and that can be reached conveniently by public transport. 2. S elect a conference venue that has implemented an environmental programme. 3. D o not accept disposable cups and dishes – always order catering with reusable tableware. 4. F avour local food, local ingredients and organic products for your catering. 5. O rder tap water in jugs to be served rather than bottled water. 6. S elect a conference venue that utilises natural light and eliminate unnecessary electric lighting. 7. P ay careful consideration to how much printed paper your meeting requires, if any. 8. If you use nametags, collect them after the meeting so that they can be reused later. 9. S upply participants with conference material in electronic format, either during or after the meeting. 10. The Helsinki Hall of Culture was designed by Alvar Aalto. It´s a venue for conferences, galas, trade fairs and concerts. Situated in the inner city, well served by public transport. The Aalto Hall has 1 450 seats. There are seats both on the flat and in the raked auditorium. Seats on the flat can be removed for gala use. From the spring season of 2013 there will be 7-9 new meeting rooms for 10 to 200 persons each.

In Suomenlinna sea fortress there are nine venues of different sizes and types available. The venues in the 18th century fortress and a Unesco World Heritage site are suitable for hosting variety of events such as seminars, conferences and banquets. The venues were originally part of the military fortification during the periods of Swedish and Russian rule, and were used as a gunpowder magazine, a granary, a church and a barracks. There is no public transportation on the island but all the venues are within walking distance from the main quay.

Restaurant Walhalla is a gourmet restaurant located on the historic grounds on the fortified southern edge of the Kustaanmiekka isle, Suomenlinna. The restaurant offers, besides the beautiful surroundings of its main dining hall caponiere Delwig, also a bar, a stunning sea view terrace and the Pizzeria Nikolai. The restaurant is open from the First of May till the crayfish season in autumn. Private events can be booked throughout the year. In summertime, the JT-Line waterbus takes you directly to the King’s Gate, close to Walhalla. From the public transport ferry pier (all year round), it is an approx. 1.5 km walk to the restaurant. The teams compete in a race that requires cleverness and creativity - by following clues the groups move from point to point. Once everybody has reached the final destination, the results are evaluated and the glorious winners of the race announced. Cruises on Gerda - a two masted square rigged sailing vessel

Gerda is a two masted square rigged sailing vessel that was built in Gävle Sweden 1995-2005. She carries 15 sails with a total sail area of 625 square meters. Both masts are 30 meters tall. Gerda is a replica of the same named cargo sailing vessel that brought wood to Britain and coal to Sweden between 1869 and 1930. Although she is equipped with all modern seafaring and safety equipment she comes with true authenticity. The magic of the sailing in the Helsinki ar-chipelago is one that will be remembered for a long time.
