The Snowball block is actually an octagon, or eight sided block with triangles sewn on the corners. From a distance, the block looks like a circle.

Fabric Selection Choose two contrasting fabrics for a traditional Snowball and Layer Cake for a Scrappy Snowball. Die Selection Cut patches using the Go! Big or Go!. Snowball die cuts one Snowball and two Triangles at a time.

Two Color Snowball Cutting Pieces 1. Every ¹⁄₃ yd makes six Snowballs. Cut one 7” strip of both fabrics. For every twenty-four matching Triangles, cut one 3” strip of both.

(1) 7" strip Snowball of both colors (1) 3" strip Triangles of both colors

2. Snowball is a two part die. Cut Snowball first and then Triangles.

3. Fold Dark 7” strip for Snowball into thirds, measuring fabric to cover Snowball with at least ¼” extra around edges.

4. Place mat on top of die and layer cut Snowball. Remove excess fabric.

5. Repeat with Light fabric.

6. For Triangles, fold 3” half strip in half. Accordion fold fabric into thirds, measuring to cover Triangles.

7. Place mat on top of die and layer cut Triangles. Remove excess fabric. 8. Layer cut second half of strip.

9. Repeat with second fabric.

10. Place opposite color Corners with Snowball. You need four Triangles for every Snowball.

Sewing Snowball Block 1. Lay out Snowball with Triangle. Use ¼” seam lines on throat plate as a guide. If lines are not marked, use a Sew Straight to guide you.

2. Flip Triangle right sides together to Snowball. Line up edges of Triangle with Snowball. Stitching should begin and end ¼” in on point.

3. Assembly-line sew Triangle on same side of Snowball.

4. Turn and sew Triangle on opposite side of Snowball. Clip apart.

5. Assembly-line sew Triangles to third and fourth sides. Clip apart.

6. Repeat with the second set of blocks.

Pressing Snowballs for Side by Side Setting Blocks set side by side need to be pressed in opposite directions so they lock together. 1. Set seams on blocks with light Snowballs with dark Triangles.

2. Open Triangles and press toward Triangles. 3. Press on wrong side.

4. Set seams on blocks with dark Snowballs and light Triangles.

5. Lift light Triangle.

6. Finger press seam under dark Snowball. Press with iron.

7. Check pressing from wrong side. Seams should be behind dark Snowball.

Sewing Top Together 1. Lay out blocks, alternating between the two.

2. Flip middle vertical row to left vertical row. 3. Stack vertical row with top block on top.

4. Sew vertical row, locking seams.

5. Stack right vertical row. Flip right sides together to middle vertical row. Assembly-line sew.

6. Turn. Sew remaining rows, pressing seams toward dark triangles. 7. Layer, quilt, and bind.

This quilt is made from a Layer Cake. A Layer Cake is a stack of forty 10” squares. They are already coordinated by the designer with a variety of prints, scales and values. Snowballs are a perfect way to use large scale prints coordinated with small scale prints.

Organizing Layer Cake Squares and Cutting 1. Divide 10" squares into twenty pairs of contrasting squares. 2. Stack three 10" pairs at a time for six layers.

3. Place six layer stack on corner of die, covering Snowball. Layer cut.

4. Peel off excess.

5. Place excess on cutting mat. Rotary cut 3" strip. Set aside for Cornerstones and Scrappy Binding.

6. Cut remainder into 3" x 7" rectangles for Triangles.

7. Fold three 3" x 7" rectangles in half. Place on Die, covering Triangles. Layer cut four Triangles. 8. Repeat cutting remaining Triangles. 17

Sewing Snowballs 1. Organize pairs of Snowballs with contrasting Triangles.

Stripe Triangles: Carefully place around Snowball so stripes all go in the same direction.

2. Sew all four identical Triangles to Snowball "in the round."

3. Clip connecting threads. 4. Press Triangles away from Snowball.

Cutting Cornerstones Rotary cut from variety of 3" x 10” Print strips with Square Up Ruler. (25) 2" squares for Inside blocks (4) 3" Corner squares

(20) 2" x 3" rectangles for outside border.

Sewing Top Together 1. Lay out blocks six by six on design wall for square quilt. Lay out blocks five by eight for rectangular quilt. 2. Place 2" Lattice and 2" Cornerstones between blocks. 3. Place four 3" Cornerstones in corners. 4. Place 3" x 6½" Lattice around outside edge with 2" x 3" Cornerstones.

5. Assembly-line sew vertical rows.

6. Assembly-line sew remaining rows, pressing seams toward Lattice. 7. From wrong side, press seams toward Lattice. 8. Layer and quilt.

Scrappy Binding 1. Measure outside edge of quilt and calculate te length needed. 2. Piece 3" wide pieces together plus any additional scraps to get desired length. 3. Press seams open. 4. Press in half lengthwise and sew to quilt. 21

Four and Nine Patch Another name for Snowball is Four and Nine Patch as named by Nancy Cabot and Nine and Four Patch by Progressive Farmer. This pattern comes with the packaging for the Snowball die #55330. The Snowball block is a connector block between Nine Patch blocks, adding additional movement within the quilt.

Snowball Quilt Just in time for cold weather, Snowball is an easy to make "Block on Board" design with just two pieces simple to sew, and locking seams. Select from a Two Fabric Quilt in a block to block setting or a Scrappy Quilt from a Layer Cake with a Lattice and Cornerstone setting. To make one block, you need one 7" square for Snowball and one contrasting fabric 3" x 7½" for four Corner Triangles.
