PURPOSE OF THE POSITION This position is responsible for participating effectively in the provision of a good quality Microbiology Diagnostic service to the District Health Board, and other users of the Laboratory Services.

Situations may often call for tact, diplomacy and will require information to be handled in a discreet and sensitive manner. In conflict situations will be required to exercise sound judgement, negotiation and persuasiveness skills, toward facilitating a workable outcome.
PROBLEM COMPLEXITY Will be regularly challenged by a wide range of clinical specimens and technical procedures..There will be a requirement to be able to prioritise issues and negotiate time frames, while still providing a quality customer service. The range of problems will be diverse and require solutions customised to meet the circumstances of the client. Therefore opportunities will arise to provide innovative options to the client based on proven outcomes. There will be demands to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and quality of information. Failure to do so could impact on the organisation in terms of the quality of service provided to clinicians. Will refer to Charge Scientist for advice or second opinion.

All changes to protocols, technical methods, etc. must be authorised by the Supervising Technologist responsible for the relevant section. Are empowered to make decisions or recommendations relating to routine processing of clinical specimens. Clinical interpretation should only be undertaken in consultation with the Clinical Microbiologist, Registrar, or Senior Supervising Scientist available. Interpretation and comment given must be preceded by stating the respondents position in the department, and an acknowledgement of technical rather than medical qualification. Discretion is required to be exercised in releasing confidential information to the appropriate parties. Are encouraged to use initiative and problem solving skills to develop innovative approaches to issues.

Holds a current Annual Practicing Certificate as a Laboratory Technician.
Experience

Recent experience within microbiology discipline. Has worked in a large 24 /7 hospital laboratory.
Registered MLT with the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Scientists Board with relevant scope of practice. Experience within microbiology discipline.
