MeadWestvaco Family Resource Center Patient-Parent Support Groups

Dear Parent Support groups offered by Dayton Children’s are specially designed to meet the needs of children and their families. Our support groups will put you in touch with trained professionals as well as other parents and kids who have experienced similar situations. Education programs offered will help children and families handle the challenges of parenting, weight loss and quitting tobacco use. For more information, call the number listed with each group. Online support can also be found through CaringBridge, a free service that allows families to set up personal web pages to update family and friends about their child's care. MEDICAL CONDITIONS Asthma Care Training (ACT) Asthma care training classes are offered for children ages 6 to 11 years old with asthma and for their parents to help them better manage asthma. Participants learn about triggers, warning signs and treatment of asthma by interacting through fun activities. This is a free three-week program, meeting two hours per week. Space is limited, so please register early. Call Belinda Huffman at 937-641-3266. Cystic Fibrosis Parent Support Group Parents of children with cystic fibrosis can get education and support from this group. The group meets the third Wednesday of specific months from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Dayton Children’s. Call social work at 937-641-5300. Epilepsy Support Group Support groups for families affected by epilepsy meet at The Epilepsy Foundation of Western Ohio, 7523 Brandt Pike in Huber Heights, Ohio. Food Allergies - Families Educating Allergies/Asthma Together (FEAT) Our mission is to provide support and education to families who have children with food allergies or asthma. This group has been formed to help families learn from each other, to share ideas and experiences with new families as well as to learn from medical professionals. Our goal is helping you help your child live a life with limits. FEAT meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:30 pm. Email or call for location. Heart – Mended Little Hearts This is a nationwide program for parents, caregivers and families of children with heart defects that provides resources and a caring support network to help families work through the overwhelming emotions involved with having a child with a heart defect. Mended Little Hearts helps families move forward to find laughter, healing and hope. The group meets bimonthly. Call 937-853-3105 or email [email protected]. See www.wrighthearts.org. Hemophilia – Southwestern Ohio Hemophilia Foundation This group offers education and support to families affected by hemophilia and related bleeding disorders. Call John Gale at 937-298-8000. See www.swohiohemophilia.org. Juvenile diabetes support group Diabetes support group for children and family. Call for date and time. There is no fee. Seizure education: Seizure education class is held Wednesdays at 10:00 am or as scheduled and is sponsored by Dayton Children’s Neurology/ EEG department. Call to register at 937-641-3080. Spina Bifida support group Adults with myelomeningocele and parents of children with myelomeningocele are welcome to attend this group, which is associated with the Miami Valley Spina Bifida Organization. GRIEF SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN, TEENS AND FAMILIES Bereaved parent support Dayton Children’s bereavement team is available to meet the needs of our parents and families/friends before, during and after the death of a child. Our primary focus is to provide support to both the child and their family/friends. Resources available include chaplain service, medical/nursing support, psychological/counseling intervention and social work involvement. COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUPS The Compassionate Friends This support group is for parents, adult siblings and grandparents whose child has died, regardless of the child’s age. Two local chapters  Miami Valley Chapter meets at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church in Kettering on the third Wednesday of the month from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Call 937-640-2621. E-mail [email protected]. Pathways of Hope Grief Counseling Center The Hospice of Dayton offer a wide range of grief support services to anyone in the community in need of bereavement services. Contact 937258-4991 for information. HEALing Together This parent support group is intended for families experiencing the loss of a pregnancy or the death of an infant or young child. Meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Atrium Medical Center in Middletown. For more information, contact the HEAL office at 513-705-4056.
