You will always have a piece of my heart and I already miss you so much! I hope you are able to find some of your closest friends like Pepper, Zeke, Sir, Frankie and Coco. Every time I hunt and go to bed at night I will think of you. God bless you and I love you so much!!! One last thing, it is OK if you chase rabbits now. :-)

Letter from the President

AZPDC President 2013–2014 Wendy McNabb It is a pleasure and an honor for me to write my first letter to you as the first Woman President of the Arizona Pointing Dog Club. Most of the first letters from the President start by thanking the membership for electing them…Thank You! They thank the past president and board for all of their hard work and efforts during the previous year…Thank You! I want to take the extra step and thank all of you who volunteered your time and efforts last year for everything from attending meetings, giving your opinions, serving on committees, and volunteering time and efforts at the trials…Thank You! This year we have a board that isn’t afraid to dig in and get things accomplished. We already have a new trailer purchased and in the making. It should be ready for us to pick up in June at the latest. We will be asking for volunteers to help set up the new trailer to accommodate all of the necessary items it takes to run a trial. With us having the new trailer, it will be much easier on the Trial Chairperson to get it to each location. We also have new markers for the fields. The old ones were heavy and took up a lot of room in the trailer. For the past few years, I have heard talk of a satellite phone for our trials in case of an emergency. Well, I have located this also and we will now have an emergency phone for every trial in case we have an unforeseen mishap. What are my goals for the year going forward? Many. We are in the process of setting up a more streamline way to register for the trials and pay your membership through Paypal. The issue of checks not clearing in a timely manner will hopefully be a thing of the past. However, the AZPDC will still accept your check if you wish to pay this way. It’s all about “getting with the times”, giving you as the member an option. Fun events, I am currently looking into setting up an evening BBQ at Ben Avery to do some shooting together. How about just a pot luck get together? No dogs, no competition, just a get together to maybe meet someone in the club you haven’t had a chance to meet, drink a few beers, soda, burgers and swimming. We need to get the club more in the “Club” state of mind. Lastly, I have started researching what is needed to change the status of the club from a 501c7 to a 501c3. Although we are legally a non-profit organization, we are categorized under a social club. Membership dues, donations for our banquet, raffles and any donation in general is NOT tax deductible to the donor. If we can change our status to a Non-Profit Charitable Organization, all of the items listed will be tax deductible to you and anyone donating and possibly put together some grant applications.

Wendy McNabb, AZPDC President

First of all I would like to thank everyone who took the time filling in my circle on this year’s ballot. You have allowed me two first that I never thought possible. The ability to put the title of vice president on a business card, and becoming a published author. Aside from these new and exciting endeavors, being a member of the point dog club has been a great experience. Being new to Arizona, this club has allowed me to meet some wonderful friends and a tremendous amount of memories in the field. As summer approaches, so does our trial season in the mountains around Flagstaff. This time of year is something I look forward to all spring. It gives us all a chance to get out of the heat and spend some nights with great friends, and better dogs. Hosting these trials also carries the need for many individuals to step up and give an extra effort. There is always the need for an extra hand to make sure everything runs smoothly. Whether it is helping haul water or birds, to picking up an extra judging assignment nothing goes unappreciated. This club is such a great club because of the participation we see on every level and I hope we can continue this trend. That being said I look forward to seeing everyone around the bonfire in a few weeks, hopefully listening to the golden voice of a one Mr. Thomas Wheeling.

Thank you everyone for coming out to the April trial. We had a great turnout Saturday, with about 40 entries. Sunday was a bit lighter, with about 20 entries, allowing us to pack up and get out of there a bit earlier. I think the earlier start time helped with the heat. The word got out, and everyone showed up on time for the safety meeting, which was appreciated by all. There were several new faces which are always nice to see. There were also some returning faces, like Wendy Taylor, Lance Gerdes and Randy Vanderwilt. Welcome back to the club. We received a total of 7 memberships at the trial. The weather was hot on Saturday, as expected. Sunday the wind came in, making conditions late in the day pretty tough. There were still some dogs that got into some birds and posted some decent scores though. Thank you everyone for the help. Without everyone pitching in, chairing these trials would be a nightmare.

Saturday morning we were welcomed to the High Desert Hunt Club. The manager, Dave welcomed us and offered the use of the club house for both days. We met there as a group and the coffee pot was on. This weekend was much like we have done in the past, everyone introduced themselves and shared what kinds of dog (s) they had. Bill Gibbons spoke about the positive impact this club has historically had on the pointing dogs in Arizona. I have to say that reflects a lot on his continued support for this club and its members! His support continued for this event with him joining us and helping us all out. His forty years experience as a professional pointing dog trainer show in his words even more so in his work with dogs. Bill was mentored by His close friend Bill West. The two of them developed a way of working with dogs, Bill Gibbons not only has refined those methods, he continues using and improving this work. For all of the training days we have done our foremost effort is to spread this knowledge to those who wish to train their dogs. From the use of a chain gang as a physical tool, to the preparatory work prior to field work for dogs of all ages. We work through the steps in a way we think will stick with the owners. Field work done in groups simply gets more effective work done in a progressive way than can be done individually. In the field each person with a dog of any age breed or skill level is offered tips or hands-on help if they wish. We try and review each field event with the groups…not only after it has taken place but as much as we can while we are working. For all that train there pointing dogs here are a couple of reminders: Work with a group of other owners. The club newsletter has an area for you to use to make this easier. Send your name and contact info and the area that you are in and days you can meet. Others in your area may contact you and you can meet train together. When you train, have a plan. I like to develop this plan at end of a session for the next day we will train. Have tie out stakes or better yet tie out chains that you can share with others. If dogs are allowed to keep an eye on the field work of others it grabs their attention and builds desire. If you are check lining a dog in a group work with the others on what you want from the session and find out there needs so your dog gets the most from the time. If you are check lining you need a gunner, If blank gun or long gun is your decision, let the gunner and others in the group know. Work on an end point to a session. I prefer to end on a positive note. However if things are just not going well it may be the best option to pack it up, think of a plan for next time. Maybe others you train with will have thoughts…. These events are labor intensive and I will not attempt to list the names of all that made it work so well. A few of the folks are, Joe Felish, he not only took care of obtaining the birds needed, he housed fed and watered, brought them to the event and planted a good share of them for our field. This is the third of these events in a little over a year and at each of them Ted Bounds has showed up as the gunner. This event was the first he brought his dog to and we had other folks relieve him as gunner while he worked his dog. Homer Gribben has been a key player for these events for a lot of years, I cannot imagine one without him and his wisdom. In the field work we are almost always talking about what this or that dog needs, and work on a plan to make it happen. Most if the time when he has a thought I wish I had it first…. When we start the field work each day we ask for members with finished pointing dogs to find, point, retrieve and honor. For those new to pointers this gives a goal to work towards. For those of you that provide those dogs it is a wonderful way to share what you have worked so hard on with others who will be able to pass that on in perhaps the not too distant future. Last but maybe not to be forgotten for a moment: Train train train train….For dogs ready for fall hunting, or trialing you owe it to them to give them every opportunity to be at their best. For the real young dog owners you have a lot of prep time as they grow and you help them develop. Thanks to all that joined us. Rich Hale

Key points to remember from our training days: Work in groups: Meet and discuss goals you would like to work on in the group. Decide who will work to the front and find bird and who will work behind. Four dogs in the field each outing is a good group. Others in the group can follow along. While in the field with a group and with your dog on a check line is the best time to work on simple commands. With the distractions around you is a perfect time to ask pup to come. One word command with a correction with check line if needed. When the front dog has a find it is really important to watch several things: Keep track of the wind as you approach. You should position your dog to see the other dog rather than wind the bird. Watch your dog close. When it sees the other dog on point most of the time they will hesitate at the least. That is your cue to make sure it stops and stands for the time it takes with the other dog. If your dog stops when it sees another dog standing, that is fine…help it stay put. It just shows your work is paying off and dog wants to honor another standing dog. Safe field work: Club functions require all folks in the field to wear safety orange, hats are good, vests are good combined they are better. When you work on your own in groups remembering vests are a Good part of the days plan. The group should remain as a group as much as you can. When the gunner is called in they should scan the entire area before the flush, noting areas that are safe shooting lanes and areas that have to be avoided. Another key point here is the gunner must keep in mind that safety is utmost in the field…I know that seems a bit basic but well worth our mental alertness. If there is not a safe shooting lane a blank gun is fine. Training pointing dogs is a rather long term journey. No one great day or one poor day will affect the end outcome a lot. It is repetition and consistency that works. Some days go well and like they were planned to be that way. Some don’t know when it is time to end the session. I like to end on a good note. However if things are just not going well, maybe pack it in before dogs get hot, or we lose track of the goal we had at the start of the session.
