Message from the Administration

Hello, Spring Break and Easter holidays have arrived and I would like to wish staff and students a well-deserved break. When we return from break we will be approaching the end of Term 3 and the beginning of our last term of 2015/16. Our calendars have been full since coming back from Christmas holidays. I want to congratulate our students for their excellent achievement on their provincial exams. The hours of preparation time that our students devoted to their studies are certainly evident in the results that they achieved. Congratulations Wildcats! The start of a new semester is also an opportunity for us to hire new staff and this year was no exception. Please join me in welcoming Mr. Dunse (Business Ed), Ms. Dias (Math), Mr. Hendry (Math/Science), Ms. Tomalty (English), Ms. Scarpino (Spanish) and Mr. Orjala who is filling in for Mr. Steko until Spring Break. During exam break, our business students led by James Kan organized Burnaby Central’s first annual business competition, “The Beyond Burnaby Business Competition”. Co-founder and CEO of Tangoo, Paul Davidescu opened the event then Burnaby business students competed in case competitions and a “Dragons’ Den” style event. The event was an overwhelming success and the team has started planning next year’s competition. I would like to congratulate our Aboriginal Committee for the time and energy in organizing this year’s Aboriginal Week. The committee, led by Ms. Ferraby and Ms. Chase organized an array of activities for the school highlighting First Nations traditions and culture. The opening ceremony featured greetings by Gr. 12 student Richard Baron, a drumming ceremony and dancing. Workshops during the week included Story Telling, Residential Schools, Pow Wow Dancing and Human Library. Congratulations to our student athletes and teams during the past few months. A special congratulations to Sara Brinkac for achieving 1st place at the Provincial Championship in Girls Wrestling. Our BWC U18 played their final home game last week and came back from behind to win 5-4 in OT. Exciting home finish! For more athletic news please see the Athletics section on the Burnaby Central Website. As we plan ahead for Spring, please note that Parent Teacher Interview sign-up opens online on March 29th and interviews are scheduled for April 6th. Our Gr.10 students have been invited to attend the Stickboy Opera on March 30th at Michael J. Fox Theatre and our school play, Diary of Anne Frank, runs from April 13th to 16th at Burnaby Central. Graduation is around the corner for our Grade 12 students. A detailed handout was provided to each graduate this week. Additional copies of the handout are available in the office and payment for grad activities can be made online or in the office. Best wishes for a relaxing Spring Break holiday. Sincerely,

Ms. Hari

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER TONGUE DAY For the second year Central staff and students took part in International Mother Tongue Day (21 February) by ordering delicious sweet crêpes in French and Spanish. This day reminds us of the diversity of languages surrounding us. Bon appétit !

The Diary of Anne Frank Following the success of the Burnaby Central’s Theatre Production fall play, there are even higher hopes for the next production set in spring, as its plot is the well-known and historically true story of the German-born writer, Anne Frank. This project focuses on Anne’s courage, hope and optimism as she’s guided through one of the darkest times in history, the Holocaust in World War 2. Theatre Production proudly announces their spring play, “The Diary of Anne Frank”! The story is based on Anne’s diary, a life-affirming record of a young girl’s high spirits in the face of danger. She is widely known for her sincere and honest perspective of the world despite being kept from it. Not only has the cast and crew read the diary and taken it to the heart, but they’ve also empathetically strived to experience what the characters have undergone, through writing their own personal journals, visiting the Holocaust Centre in Vancouver, and having done extensive research for the subject. This ongoing project features elements with the intent to provoke genuine emotion from the audience, using moving visuals to display the hardships and horrors faced by those who struggled to survive the brutality of the Holocaust, as well as those hope-filled moments they’ve managed to hold onto. This production’s scaffolding includes visually appealing sets and a variety of lighting, music and sound effects. It also incorporates original writing by the cast and crew, and a performance by Burnaby Central’s Resonance Choir. Prepare to be transported into the tragically short-lived but wondrous and inspiring life of Anne Frank!

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced that Residency defender/midfielder Matthew Baldisimo and midfielder/striker, Alphonso Davies, (who at the age of 15 years, three months, and three weeks, is the youngest player in the USL), have been signed to professional contracts with Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) in the United Soccer League (USL). Both players are passionate about playing for this club. Matthew is extremely competitive and plays in the best interest of the team, while Alphonso is an intelligent attacking player who is excellent going one-v-one

It’s been a banner year for the BWC Hockey Academy Prep Team. After finishing in 5th place last year, the team returned six 12th graders and added eleven 11th graders from the Elite 15 team, giving them continuity that helped the team become the top program in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League and a National ranking of #2 in Canada. The team has amassed a record of 39 Wins and 13 losses amongst the best in the nation. The boys travelled to Ohio to visit Ohio State University and Miami of Ohio in October to see the US college experience and saw games at both schools. They also attended games from both the WHL and the BCHL as well and also visited the Canadian Olympic training facility in Calgary. As a result of the team’s success, the boys have been recognized by scouts across North America. Four players have already received commitments to play in the BCHL next season. Three will join the Prince George Spruce Kings: Liam Watson-Brawn, Ethan DeJong, and Ben Poisson. Agnus Crookshank, who currently leads the CSSHL in scoring and reached a milestone on February 28th when he scored his 50th goal of the season, has signed with the Langley Rivermen. All four have already played games in the BCHL this year, as have CJ Corazzin, Brady Chin, Nathan Pelletier, and Brady Lynn, who skated with the Coquitlam Express. Of equal importance has been the team’s success in the classroom. The boys average gpa was 3.0 last semester, proving that they are indeed student-athletes.

Senior Boys Rugby This year’s Senior Boys Rugby Team is poised to represent Burnaby Central very well on the rugby pitch for the upcoming season. The team has had an excellent turn out to pre-season training and show a lot of promise. They should be able to compete for the Burnaby District banner and for the Lower Mainland Tier 2 League championship. We have a lot of returning players who have gained valuable experience from playing for the last 3 or 4 years. We also have some new players that are pushing for starting spots. The Burnaby Central Rugby Program would like to also welcome Mr. Dunse to our coaching staff. He brings valuable experience as a coach and as a former player of one of Canada’s top university program at UVIC. Come out and support your team. Our games are mostly on Wednesdays or you can see the schedule on the rugby page of Mr. V’s Blog: http://blogs.sd41.bc.ca/vagnarellia/rugby/ Former Central Athlete in the News: Take a look at the World Rugby article on former Burnaby Central Grad Admir Cejvanovic. He is representing Canada at the International Vancouver 7s Tournament on March 12/13 and possibly at the Olympic Games if Canada can earn a spot. Admir, who was a grad in 2007, is a recent gold medal winner at the Pan American Games. See the link here: http://www.worldrugby.org/ news/132649
