Handicraft industry has been given priority by Indonesian Government to be developed because in involves thousands of craftsmen in rural communities. It also involves numerous designers to create new designs for the products to meet and attract consumers’ taste. This May edition will describe one of Indonesian heritage crafts, the plaited craft products. Exports of Indonesian craft product have also been steadily increased in the last five-year period by an average of 10.92 percent annually, from US$ 418.6 million in 2003 to US$ 642.5 million in 2007. We believe, by continuously introducing kinds of handicraft products produced by Indonesia, more and more overseas consumers will be aware of beautiful and useful craft products that Indonesia can supply. The group of handicrafts of stones and ceramics includes: statuettes and decorative ceramics, semiprecious stone jewelry, imitation jewelry, and precious stones jewelry. Handicraft product group of wood, rattan and the like includes: wooden frame for paintings, wooden statues, and plaited or basketworks. The group of handicraft products of metal includes: jewelry of precious metal, silver craft, and handicrafts of other metal. Textile handicraft group includes: woven cloth of silk, woven traditional cloth of “songket” and “ikat”, and other craft products of textile. And there is a group of miscellaneous crafts. Consisting of, among others, wigs, hats, artificial flowers, pearls, hairnet, handicrafts of bones, horn, turtle’s leather, traditional musical instruments, etc. In the last five-year, 2003-2007, exports of Indonesian handicrafts increased by an average of 10.92% annually, from US$ 418.6 million in 2003 to US$ 642.5 million in 2007. Meanwhile exports of plaited crafts of basketworks in 2007 reached US$ 50.8 million or 7.92% of the total value of handicraft exports, consisting of plaited rattan products of US$ 27.0 million, and plaited crafts of other than rattan material of US$ 23.8 million.

The Materials Materials used for making plaited crafts or basketworks can be divided into two, namely: rattan and other than rattan materials. The materials other than rattan include: bamboo, pandanus, hyacinth, “mendong”, raffia, “ata”, “ketak” grass, roots of water taro (calladium), “lontar” fiber, and coconut leave bone. Rattan – Rattan is the most popular material used for plaited crafts or basketworks. Rattan plants are found plentiful in Indonesia, particularly in the forests in the islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. As a matter of fact, Indonesia is the largest producer of rattan in the world. About 80% of the world’s rattans are found in Indonesia. Therefore, Indonesia is renown for its rattan products such as rattan furniture and rattan basketry and crafts. Bamboo – Plaited bamboo crafts consist of, among others, hats, trays, lamp shades, tissue place, fruit place, and various souvenirs and gift items. Pandanus – There are two kinds of pandanus. The first kind is used for food flavor or room air-fragrance. The other kind is used as material for plaited works. Most of pandanus materials are used for making mattress. The mattress materials

“green” can also be used for making boxes, bags, and other goods according to the craftsman’s creation. Hyacinth – Hyacinth belongs to water plants. The stem of the leaf has a form of cylinder with a length of up to 1 meter, and the diameter is 1-2 cm. The stem has strong fiber but soft, containing much water. Hyacinth can also be used as source of energy (bio-gas) to be used in household scale or larger scale. There are many exotic plaited craft products made of hyacinth such as bags, hats, shoes, sandals, pillows, mattress, laundry box, and exclusive accessories for ladies. “Mendong” – Mendong is a kind of grass growing in swamps. The length is usually 100 cm. The plants are cultivated and harvested in 3-4 months If compared to other seasonal plants, mendong has quite high economic value. Plaited crafts that use mendong as material are, among others, hats, bags, and boxes. Raffia – Raffia derives from the leaves of a kind of palm trees. The young leaves are cut before it has green color. The leaves then are processed to be strong fiber. At first, the fibers are loomed before being made into craft products. Craft products made from raffia fiber are bags, table covers, dining table accessories, etc. “Ata” – Ata or Lygodium circinnatum is a kind of roots, usually grow in highland region. In Indonesia, they are found in West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa tenggara and in Bali Provinces. Plaited crafts made from ata are baskets, bags, etc. The products are well developed in Bali. “Ketak” – Ketak is a kind of grass grows mainly in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The plant grows crawling on other trees. They are used as materials for making plaited household utensils such as place mats for plates, bowls, glasses, tissue box, newspaper box, CD box, lamp shade, etc.

Root of Water Taro (Calladium) – The root of water taro is a kind of glum plant, growing by crawling on other trees. The plants are many found in West Kalimantan Province. The root has elastic characteristic, strong, but having soft texture. It has the size of coconut leaf bone. They are plaited to make hats, bags, fruit baskets, kinds of souvenir, etc. “Lontar” Fiber – Lontar tree is a kind of palm, The tree has similar characteristic to coconut tree, that almost all of its parts can be used for human’s needs. The fruit can be consumed. The water from the fruit is a delicious fresh drink, or it can be made into brown sugar. Craft products that can be made from lontar fiber are hat/cap, jar, pen/pencil box, basket, key-ring, arm-band, etc. Coconut Leaf Bone – Coconut trees are found in all coastal areas of the Indonesian archipelago. The leaf bones are plaited to make baskets, boxes for keeping eggs, fruits, etc.

to create value on those Centers of Production Plaited crafts are produced in nearly all parts of Indonesia. However, plaited craft industries with large scale production are found in certain provinces such as West Java, Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, Jambi, Lampung, Riau, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan. West Java Province – Tasikmalaya District in West java Province has long been known as production center of plaited craft industries. The plaited industries are mainly found in 4 Sub-Districts, namely: Rajapolah, Cibalong, Cikalong, Cipatujah, and Pagerageung, of which, Rajapolah is the largest and the most popular one. Plaited crafts produced in this region are mainly made of pandanus, “mendong”, and bamboo. There are more than a hundred kinds of craft products produced in this region such as: mats, bin baskets, hats, mirror frames, bags, wallets, sandals, boxes for tissue, etc. Many overseas buyers from Japan, America, Europe and Singapore have visited the producers to buy those products or placing orders with their own designs. Central Java Province – Plaited crafts in this province are found in the villages of Tegaron and Banyubiru, and in the SubDistrict of Ambarawa. There are a great amount of hyacinth plants found in this region that can be used as material for making plaited craft products such as baskets, sandals, tissue boxes, etc. Those products are sold to local markets such as Jakarta, Bali, and Yogyakarta, and also exported to China and India. Meanwhile, plaited crafts of pandanus from Kebumen District have been exported to Japan, America, Sweden, France, and Italy. East Java Province – Plaited craft products from this province are found in the Districts of Banyuwangi, Trenggalek, and Lamongan. Products from this region are mainly made of bamboo. Banyuwangi District is located at the most eastern part of Java and close to Bali Island. Therefore, many tourists who visited Bali also spare their time to visit Banyuwangi. Main plaited bamboo crafts produced in this region are baskets of various kinds and shapes. Meanwhile, in Lamongan Districts of Lamongan, the craftsmen also produce plaited crafts of hyacinth, pandanus, and banana stems. Markets for plaited crafts from this province include Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Europe. Materials used for plaited crafts in this region include hyacinth, raffia, pandanus, bamboo, and rattan. Plaited craft products produced include hand bags, baskets, and wallets, Bali Province – In Bali Province, plaited craft centers are found in Karangasem and Singaraja Districts. In Karangasem, plaited craft products are mainly made of a kind of root locally called “ata” or Lygodium circinnatum. In addition, they also make plaited crafts of bamboo and “lontar” fiber. Plaited bamboo crafts are produced mainly in Singaraja District. The products include hats, boxes for newspapers, magazines, etc. The motives are adjusted to the buyers’ orders. West Nusa Tenggara Province – The West Nusa Tenggara Province has a great potential for exporting plaited craft products. There are plenty of natural resources found in the province that can be used as materials for making plaited crafts such as rattan, bamboo, pandanus, and “ketak” (a kind of grass). The production centers are found scattering in the Districs of West Lombok, Central Lombok, and East Lombok. The products include household articles, lampshades, interior and exterior accessories for households, hotels and offices. Those products have been exported to Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, America, Chile, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia. South Sulawesi Procince – The plaited craft production centers in South Sulawesi Province are found in the District of Takalar. Plaited craft products in this region are mainly made of “lontar” fiber. The plaited craft products are, among others, hats, vases, and baskets. And last but not least, there is also a special product called “songkok guru”, which is a traditional cap/hat used in traditional or wedding ceremonies. Plaited craft from this province have been exported to Singapore, Japan, and the Netherlands. Jambi Province – Plaited craft production centers in this province are found in Muaro Jambi, Merangin, and Batanghari Districts. The materials used are pandanus and bamboo. The products are mats, tissue boxes, place for cakes, sandals, etc. Those products are not yet exported. The markets are mainly in the province itself, Jakarta, and Yogyakarta.

Lampung Province – The plaited craft production center in this province are found in District of South Lampung. The craftsmen are mostly transmigrants from Java, who came to the province in 1980s. Main material used in making the plaited crafts is coconut leaf bone. Products made from this material are baskets, tissue boxes, hats, bags, wall decorations, etc. Overseas markets include Australia, America, Malaysia, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia. Riau Province – Plaited craft products in this province are made of various materials such as rattan, pandanus, coconut leaves, palm leaves, etc. The products include baskets, bags, mats, roofs, headscarf, and fish-catching equipment. The main production center is Indragiri Hilir District. The plaited craft products from the province have good potential for exports. They have already received orders from India and Malaysia. West Kalimantan Province – Bengkayang District in West Kalimantan Province is well known for its plaited craft products called “tikar bidai” or bidai mattress. The mattress

is made of rattan and wood-skin. The main market for this product is Malaysia, particularly Eastern part of Malaysia or Sarawak As a matter of fact, Bengkayang District shares common borders with Eastern part of Malaysia. Meanwhile the capital of the province, Pontianak, has also developed plaited craft products made of water taro roots in addition to plaited rattan. Plaited water taro roots are made into various souvenirs, hats, and baskets. The main market is also Malaysia. Central Kalimantan Province – Plaited craft production centers in Central Kalimantan Province are found in several villages in District of Pulau Pisang. The main plaited craft products are made of rattan, which are found in great amount in the province. The kinds of plaited rattan products are, among others, baskets, hats, bags, mattress, sandals, pencil box, etc. Those products are marketed in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bali, while overseas buyers include from Japan, China, and the Middle East.
