Nacelle oil on canvas signed and dated 1962 and on verso signed, titled on the stretcher and inscribed "Canada" on the Delamare & Cie shipping label 15 x 18 inches 38.1 x 45.7 centimeters Provenance:

Exhibited: Literature:

Galerie Jacques Dubourg, Paris Jerrold Morris International Gallery Limited, Toronto Private Collection, Toronto Guy Gogeval et al, Riopelle, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, essay by Stéphane Aquin, 2006, page 41

Please Note: this work will be previewed in both Toronto and Montreal. From May 1 - May 14 it will be on view at Heffel Galley Toronto. It will then be on view at the Galerie Heffel Montreal from May 16 May 31. By 1960 Riopelle was embracing a more fluid approach to his paintings, which encompassed heavier brushstrokes and a greater reliance on white pigments. Painted in 1962, Nacelle exemplifies this evolving and energetic style, with its heavily impastoed paint and gestural brushstrokes. It is important to note that 1962 was a significant year for Riopelle and his career, that being the year he represented Canada in the Venice Biennale and became the first Canadian to ever win an award from UNESCO. The following year, the National Gallery of Canada gave him his first retrospective and thus he more definitively entered the consciousness of the Canadian public. The importance of Riopelle is summed up with the following quote by Stéphane Aquin in his essay JeanPaul Riopelle’s Critical Migration: “More than anyone else Riopelle was a relay between currents in European thought and the various art trends of the time – surrealism, abstraction, and the great modern painterly tradition running from Courbet to Matisse by way of Monet and Cezanne. His influence on his colleagues was real and concrete.” This painting will be included in Volume III of Yseult Riopelle's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist's work.

Breaking Red acrylic and conte on watercolour board signed and dated 1980 60 x 120 inches 152.4 x 304.8 centimeters Provenance: Exhibited:

Literature:

Bau-Xi Gallery, Vancouver Private Collection, Toronto Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Correspondences: Jack Shadbolt, November 2, 1991 January 5, 1992, traveling to the Vancouver Art Gallery, July 5 - August 30, 1992, the Art Gallery of Windsor, October 3 - November 14, 1992 and the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, December 18, 1992 - February 7, 1993, catalogue #89 Patricia Ainslie, Correspondences: Jack Shadbolt, Glenbow Museum, 1991 pages 21, reproduced pages 38 and 68, catalogue #89

Breaking Red is a synthesis of all Shadbolt’s artistic influences. In 1948 Shadbolt arrived in New York and immediately enrolled at the Art Students League. In addition to this formal training, he constantly sought intellectual stimulation through acquainting himself with Hans Hofmann’s criticism and by studying mythology at the new School of Social Research. While in New York, Shadbolt drew on a plethora of artists and their works for his own artistic development, such as Picasso, Miro, Sutherland, Gorky and Rothko. Shadbolt always maintained a particular affinity for Picasso’s expressive and Surrealist ideas, yet he never fully relinquished nature as a key source for his work, as evidenced in Breaking Red. 1980, when this work was painted, was precisely the time in his career that Shadbolt returned to nature as an artistic impetus, which was, ironically, the result of seeing his own early watercolours exhibited at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria that same year. In this brightly hued triptych, strong surface tension exists where each panel pushes and pulls the viewer in and out of the work. The most recognizable symbol is the butterfly, which for Shadbolt was a symbol whose seasonal cycle paralleled that of the human cycle, a vestige of the natural world, imbuing the work with an organic element. Juxtaposed to serenity of the butterfly is the central panel a pastiche of disparate forms emerging out of the intense blood-red. This draws on a more collaged element of disassembled and often irrational displacement, creating a dramatic tension of sorts. As Patricia Ainslie asserts, “In the central panel of Breaking Red, 1980… ‘cut out’ shapes of exotic, vibrant colour are overlapped and linked in a surrealistic and arbitrary way.” Overall, Shadbolt’s paintings draw on the universal themes of life and death, growth and decay, and the concept that with death is always new life.

221 MARC-AURÈLE DE FOY SUZOR-COTÉ CAC RCA 1869 - 1937 Canadian

Joliet bronze sculpture signed and titled on the base 28 3/4 x 12 1/2 x 8 inches 73 x 31.7 x 20.3 centimeters Provenance: Exhibited:

Private Collection, Quebec

Literature:

In 1923, the secretary of the newly created Historical Monument Commission suggested a few names of individuals who deserved a place in the niches of the facade of the Parliament. Among those names was Louis Joliet, the great 17th century French explorer who took possession of the Great Lakes region in the name of the King of France and who discovered the Mississipi in 1673. The commission for this sculpture was given to Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, painter and sculptor. Lacroix writes "In July 1928, his Louis Jolliet, modelled in 1925-1926, was enlarged and cast in bronze for installation on the façade of the Parliament Building in Quebec City" This bronze sculpture is identical to the plaster model which is in the Musée du Québec collection.

Pont Bourbeau sous la neige oil on canvas signed and dated 1921 33 1/4 x 48 1/4 inches 84.4 x 122.5 centimeters Provenance: Exhibited: Literature:

Madame A. Suzor-Coté, Quebec Musée de la Province du Québec, Quebec, 1945, exhibited as Le Pont Bourbeau, 16 juillet 1945 Jean-René Ostiguy, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté, National Gallery of Canada, 1978, reproduced page 9 Laurier Lacroix, Suzor-Coté: Light and Matter, National Gallery of Canada and Musée du Quebec, 2002, page 166, the earlier related canvas of the same subject entitled First Thaw, Late March, Canadian Winter Landscape reproduced page 165, catalogue # 46

The bridge in this beautiful large-scale painting is named for Solyme Bourbeau, Suzor-Coté’s neighbour, who allowed the artist to set up his easel wherever he wanted on his farm. The view is from the Gosselin River, where it ran through Bourbeau’s property. The Gosselin River has its source in the Appalachian mountains, eventually flowing into the Nicolet River, and Suzor-Coté painted it many times. This picturesque river scene showcases Suzor-Coté’s fine eye for moody winter atmospheres and his impressionist approach to the landscape. Delicate tints of colour along the edges of sections of ice and snowy riverbanks are exquisitely rendered. It is interesting to note that the related canvas, First Thaw, Late March, Canadian Winter Landscape, was painted in 1906, and that Suzor-Coté returned to paint the scene again in 1921 in this work - it must have been a view that greatly appealed to him. Bridges were among his favourite subjects, and as Laurier Lacroix writes, “No one could make them more attractive than Suzor-Coté.” One of Canada’s finest Impressionist painters, Suzor-Coté captured the essence of the Quebec countryside in this evocative large painting.

Seashore acrylic on paper signed and dated 1966 and on verso titled and dated on the gallery label 10 x 11 1/2 inches 25.4 x 29.2 centimeters Provenance: Exhibited: Literature:

Malborough Godard Gallery, Toronto Private Collection, Ontario Ian M. Thom et al, Takao Tanabe, Vancouver Art Gallery, 2005, page 21, similar work entitled Grey Cloud reproduced page 68

In 1959, a Canada Council grant enabled Tanabe to leave Canada and spend two years in Japan; the impact of this experience was most apparent in his subsequent works on paper. Seashore was executed five years after his return, yet it displays a Japanese sensibility with its minimalist aesthetic, atmospheric wash and delicately rendered black strokes which recall elements of calligraphy. The sensuousness of this work is tempered with the finesse and energy of the bolder colour palette, a reference to the painterly abstraction of the New York School. Seashore was executed in 1966, an important and pivotal year in the ever-changing and evolving career of Tanabe, as it was the last year that he adhered to this painterly abstraction; by 1967, he was fully ensconced in hard-edged and bolder-coloured abstractions, and from there he moved into landscapes, never to return to the style of his earlier works. As Thom asserts, "What his work asks is that the viewer make a visual, emotional and spiritual journey. It is the richness of this journey that makes Tanabe's art so compelling and so important." It is interesting to note that Seashore bears a remarkable similarity to Tanabe’s Grey Cloud, which is currently housed in the Vancouver Art Gallery and was painted in the same year; it could be viewed as a companion piece to this work.

Jim King's Wharf, Alert Bay, BC colour woodcut signed, titled and editioned 55/100 10 3/4 x 8 inches 27.3 x 20.3 centimeters Provenance: Exhibited:

Private Collection, England

Literature:

Michael J. Gribbon, Walter J. Phillips, 1978, reproduced page 61, figure 37 Roger Boulet, Walter J. Phillips: The Complete Graphic Works, 1981, page 284, reproduced page 285 Roger Boulet, The Tranquility and the Turbulence, 1982, reproduced page 106

Boulet writes that, "On his first trip to Alert Bay, Phillips happened on Jim King's Wharf." Writing about this print in his unpublished manuscript Wet Paint, Phillips stated: "Some of the coastal steamers tie up at the end of this crazy wharf, and discharge consignments of groceries and other articles of commerce for the genial Chinese merchant Jim King, whose store stands at the shore end of it. The tide races along Johnstone Strait, between the shore and Vancouver Island whose snow-capped peaks may be seen in the distance. An Indian dug-out canoe is passing - admire its graceful lines. Gasoline driven fish boats - trollers and seiners, tramp steamers and launches pass as frequently, and the big liners that ply between the great southern ports and Alaska, at regular intervals. The composition does not present any feature of outstanding interest. The canoe was introduced for balance, and to help lead the eye at the end of the wharf, which is the focal point. The distant island is connected with the wharf on the picture plane by intrusive lines and parts, and the vertical direction of the piles merges gradually into the horizontal by virtue of their spreading reflections." This trip to the West Coast also enabled Phillips to sketch Siwash and Kwakiutl villages, providing him with rich material for woodcuts and watercolours.
