Parallel Shaft Reducer Application Data STARTING AND PEAK LOADS FOOTE-JONES reducers are designed in accordance with AGMA Standards for helical, herringbone and spiral bevel reducers. The catalog ratings are satisfactory for infrequent starting (five starts per hour or less) and for maximum momentary or starting loads not exceeding 275% of rated load (175% overload). For more frequent starting (up to ten starts per hour), the actual maximum momentary or starting load shall not exceed 200% of rated load (100% load). Rated load is defined as the unit rating with a service factor of 1.0. If the maximum starting or momentary load exceeds the above, the application should be referred to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative with complete details on the duty cycle. All components are designed to permit loads of 285% of the catalog rating without stressing any component beyond 75% of the material yield point. Brake Applications – Where the torque rating of the brake exceeds the rating of the motor, the rating of the brake dictates the selection of the gear drive. Oversize Prime Movers are discouraged. Published Service Factors do not cover applications that require oversize prime movers for higher inertia or peak loads. Refer such applications to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative for selection of suitable drives. CAUTION Where service factors are low (i.e. 1.0 or less),

often strength rather than durability ratings are limiting based on starting or peak loads, so particular care should be taken to consider all load factors. SERVICE FACTORS Mechanical horsepower and output torque capacities shown in rating tables are calculated on a 1.0 service factor, with an electric motor or turbine drive. When selecting a reducer for operation in a specific application, multiply the actual required input horsepower or output torque by the proper service factor (Table A) to obtain the equivalent horsepower or torque rating. This equivalent value may then be used with the rating tables to select the reducer. The service factors are based on electric, pneumatic, hydraulic motors or turbine drivers. For internal combustion engine drivers, see Table B for service factor conversions. Note: The service factors are based on field experience by the gear industry with average installations, and may not be applicable in all instances. They are recommended minimums. The purchaser is to evaluate the service factors against his experience, and to specify different service factors where there is sufficient experience, and all load factors as known. THERMAL RATINGS Thermal horsepower ratings represent the maximum horsepower that can be transmitted without overheating when a reducer is operated continuously for more than three hours.

AGMA Standards permit oil (sump) temperatures up to 200°F. When the thermal rating is less than the transmitted load, a larger size unit with sufficient thermal capacity must be selected or an external cooling system must be added. Thermal horsepower ratings are shown in the catalog rating tables. Only transmitted horsepower is subject to thermal horsepower limitations, service factors do not apply. For intermittent service or unusual ambient temperatures, consult your FOOTEJONES Sales Representative RATING TABLES Horsepower ratings have been calculated on a 1.0 service factor in accordance with current AGMA recommended practice. The tabulations are compiled for easy unit size selection. The tables are organized by input speed and columns headed with ratio and nominal output rpm designations. HP values are at input, torque figures are at output and allow for efficiency losses. When the required speed falls between two cataloged speeds of a unit for a cataloged ratio, interpolate to determine unit rating. When a special intermediate ratio is required, use the lowest output torque from either the next higher or lower standard ratio, and calculate the input horsepower allowing for efficiency. OVERHUNG LOADS Overhung loads are calculated at the most adverse combination of rating, speed, rotation and direction of load. In most applications where there is a reasonable service factor, appreciably greater overhung load may be available. This is particularly true in the higher output speed ranges where the bearings limit the overhung load capacity. For applications involving high overhung loads, Style 4 reducers are usually required and these applications should be carefully reviewed. When greater capacity is desired, contact your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative with complete application data including direction of rotation and side load. Calculated overhung load for shafts must not exceed the permissible overhung load capacity listed in the rating tables for the reducer size, type, ratio and rpm selected. The permissible overhung loads shown in the ratings tables are calculated for loads applied perpendicular to the shaft at one diameter distance from the heads of the bearing cap screws. Sprockets, pinions and gears should be mounted as close to the reducer as possible to minimize reactions on shafts and bearings. If the point of application of the overhung load is located beyond one diameter, the tabulated overhung load capacities no longer apply. OPERATING SPEEDS Operate units only at the speeds shown on the nameplate. Before changing speeds, refer complete application details and nameplate data to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative for a review of the lubrication system. Also specify reducer operating speeds on orders to insure proper lubrication. Variable or Multi-Speed Applications It is essential that all orders indicate maximum and minimum speeds as well as the duty cycle, as modifications to the lubrication system may be required. This is particularly important for units with a build-in oil pump. For input speeds above 1750 rpm or below 100 rpm, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. RATIOS Both nominal AGMA and actual ratios (accurate to three decimal places) are shown. Where exact ratios for precise synchronization are required, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative for actual tooth combinations. Optional intermediate ratios are available. MOUNTING POSITION All gear reducers are designed to operate with the base mounted horizontally unless specified otherwise. Refer all other special mountings to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. Modifications to the lubrication system and seals may be required. EFFICIENCIES The approximate full load efficiencies for normal operating conditions are listed below. Where efficiency is critical, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative with complete application data for a more precise figure. Single Reduction Double Reduction Triple Reduction

Modifications such as special seals, heaters, heat exchangers, etc., could be required for these unusual conditions. Consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. SAFETY The purchaser should determine the applicable local and national safety codes related to speed reducers for the specific installation involved. Shaft guarding and noise level requirements particularly should be checked, and any requirements involving the reducer clearly specified. STORAGE All units are coated with a rust-inhibiting oil during the shop test, and shaft extensions are coated with a dry-film preservative. This treatment will provide adequate protection for normal periods during installation. This period could range from 2-3 months in severe, unprotected outside storage, up to a year in temperature-controlled indoor storage. It is recommended the units be protected during storage, and periodic inspection is recommended and re-treatment applied, if necessary. Long Term Storage – For more positive storage instructions, refer to the Maintenance Manual. Certified Prints shall be contractually binding as to the understanding of FOOTE-JONES regarding the mechanical and rating requirements, and shall govern when there is a conflict between them and the inquiry, order, quotation or specifications. For units with built-in pumps, allow an additional 0.5%. WARRANTY FOOTE-JONES warrants that the equipment manufactured will perform satisfactorily for the rating specified on the certified print and nameplate provided it is properly installed and operated within the speed and torque limits and other load and environmental conditions for which it was sold, and maintained in accordance with the Maintenance Manuals. The warranty is applicable providing the drive system is free from critical speeds, torsional or lateral vibratory loads within the operating speed range, no matter how induced. Responsibility for the system analysis rests with the purchaser. ENVIRONMENT The standard reducer is designed to operate in a protected location with reasonable ventilation, free from temperature extremes (below -10°F or above 100°F for significant periods) or severe dust, toxic, explosive, or other unusual environments.

SELECTION PROCEDURE Step 1 Determine service factor for your application depending on number of hours of operation each day and the type of prime mover. Refer to Tables A and B. Step 2 Multiply the service factor obtained in Step 1 by the actual input horsepower or output torque required to operate the driven equipment to determine an equivalent rating. Step 3 Refer to rating tables to select the speed reducer size with the proper input and output speeds that also has the capacity to equal or exceed the required equivalent rating. Step 4 If the drive is subject to starting or peak torque more than 200% to 275% of the catalog rating for reducer selected in Step 3, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. Step 5 The thermal capacity of the reducer you select must equal or exceed the actual input horsepower transmitted (not the equivalent horsepower). If the input horsepower is greater, consider fan cooling, heat exchanges or select a larger reducer size. When the unit operates intermittently (less than three hours continuously), consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. Step 6 The overhung load on all shafts not connected with a flexible coupling must be calculated from the formula on page 4. The overhung load for a specific torque; however, can be reduced by increasing the diameter of the gear, sprocket or sheave that is mounted on the shaft. Step 7 A backstop may be required to prevent reverse rotation for some applications. Other accessories, such as bases, are also available.

I38 Parallel Shaft Reducer Vertical Style

SELECTION These reducers may be selected using the Parallel Horsepower Rating Tables.

BEARINGS Longer bearing life/oversize heavy-duty tapered roller bearings exceed industry standards.

COMPACT DESIGN Space-saving, compact design allows reducer to be installed into right areas, yet permits easy accessibility for service.

LUBRICATION A rotary, positive displacement, self-priming pump delivers oil to the proper upper bearings. For VERTICAL SHAFT DOWN applications, the low speed bearing is grease lubricated.

DRY WELL CONSTRUCTION Prevents leakage of oil at low speed shaft of the reducer. ACCEPTS STANDARD MOTOR Motor is mounted to reducer by means of an adapter. Reducer accepts a standard NEMA “C” Flange motor coupled to the reducer by using a standard flexible coupling.

OIL FLOW INDICATOR A prominently mounted indicator gives instant assurance of adequate lubricant circulation. As an optional feature, an electrical switch can be incorporated to actuate an alarm in the event of low oil flow.

I42 Parallel Shaft Reducer BACKSTOP CLUTCH Sprag-type backstops are available for all sizes of parallel shaft speed reducers. They grip positively to prevent reverse rotation with minimum backlash. The backstop is mounted on an extension of the high speed shaft, and is enclosed in its own housing with its own reservoir for oil. When one cooling fan is required in addition to a backstop, location of the fan assembly will be as shown by the dotted lines on the input shaft extension. When two cooling fans are required in addition to a backstop, refer to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative.

Notes: “X” dimension must be checked to determine if there will be any interference between the backstop and a coupling or sprocket mounted on the low speed shaft extension. “L” dimensions shown do not include fan on backstop shaft extension. Refer to your FOOTE-JONES Representative for this option.

Spiral Bevel Reducer Application Data I45 RATING TABLES Horsepower ratings have been calculated on a 1.0 service factor in accordance with current AGMA recommended practice. The tabulations are compiled for easy unit size selection. The tables are organized by input speed and columns headed with ratio and nominal output rpm designation. HP values are at input, torque figures are at output, and allow for efficiency losses. When the required speed falls between two cataloged speeds of a unit for a cataloged ratio, interpolate to determine unit rating. When a special intermediate ratio is required, use the lowest output torque from either the next higher or lower standard ratio, and calculate the input horsepower allowing for efficiency. THERMAL RATINGS Thermal horsepower ratings represent the maximum horsepower that can be transmitted without overheating when a reducer is operated continuously for more than three hours. AGMA Standards permits oil (sump) temperatures up to 200°F. When the thermal rating is less than the transmitted load, a larger size unit with sufficient thermal capacity must be selected or an external cooling system added. Thermal horsepower ratings are shown in the catalog rating tables. Only transmitted horsepower is subject to thermal horsepower limitations, service factors do not apply. For intermittent service or unusual ambient temperatures, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. OVERHUNG LOADS Overhung loads are calculated at the most adverse combination of rating, speed, rotation and direction of load. In most applications where there is a reasonable service factor, appreciably greater overhung load may be available. This is particularly true in the higher output speed ranges where the bearings limit the overhung load capacity. STYLE 1 reducers are generally intended for applications where the connected load is direct-coupled to the reducer output shaft. For applications involving overhung loads, STYLE 4 reducers are usually required, and these applications should be carefully reviewed. When greater capacity is desired, contact your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative with complete application data including direction of rotation and side load.

Calculated overhung load for shafts must not exceed the permissible overhung load capacity listed in the ratings tables for the reducer size, type, ratio and rpm selected. The permissible overhung loads shown in the rating tables are calculated for loads applied perpendicular to the shaft at one diameter distance from the heads of the bearing cap screws. I46 Spiral Bevel Reducer Application Data SELECTION PROCEDURE Step 1

Determine service factor for your application depending on number of hours of operation each day and the type of prime mover. Refer to Tables A and B on pages 6-9.

Step 2

Multiply the service factor obtained in Step 1 by the actual input horsepower or output torque required to operate the driven equipment to determine an equivalent rating.

Step 3

Refer to rating tables to select the speed reducer size with the proper input and output speeds that also has the capacity to equal or exceed the required equivalent rating.

Step 4

If the drive is subject to starting or peak torque more than 200% to 275% of the catalog rating for reducer selected in Step 3, consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative.

Step 5

The thermal capacity of the reducer you select must equal or exceed the actual input horsepower transmitted (not the equivalent horsepower). If the input horsepower is greater, consider fan cooling, heat exchanges or select a larger reducer size. When the unit operates intermittently (less than three hours continuously), consult your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative.

Step 6

The overhung load on all shafts not connected with a flexible coupling must be calculated from the Overhung Load Rating Table. If a Style 1 reducer does not have sufficient overhung load capacity, check a Style 4. The overhung load for a specific torque; however, can be reduced by increasing the diameter of the gear, sprocket, or sheave that is mounted on the shaft.

Step 7

A backstop may be required to prevent reverse rotation for some applications. Refer to your FOOTEJONES Sales Representative for backstop selection. Other accessories, such as bases, are also available.

Spiral Bevel Reducer Vertical Units I67 SPECIAL FEATURES OF VERTICAL TYPES

I

DRY WELL CONSTRUCTION A specially constructed dry well prevents leakage at the low speed seal on vertical shaft-down reducers. The low speed shaft is surrounded by a vertical column that rises above the oil level and shields the lower low speed bearing and seal from the oil bath. The top of the column is covered by an umbrella-type labyrinth seal. The lower bearing is greased through a pressure fitting. Piping extends under the housing. A pressure relief fitting equalizes grease pressure to prevent damage to the low speed shaft seal from excessive lubrication. Grease through the pressure relief fitting alerts the maintenance man that lubrication is completed.

LUBRICATION A rotary, positive displacement, self-priming pump delivers oil to the high speed, upper low speed and upper intermediate speed bearings on all sizes and types of double and triple reduction vertical spiral bevel speed reducers. The pump is a standard industrial model positively connected to the spiral bevel gear shaft and operates with either direction of rotation. For applications where units operate at extremely slow speed or have long periods of idle time, a separate motor-driven pump will be provided at a nominal charge. Single reduction units are splash lubricated.

SELECTION VBHE reducers are available in double reduction sizes 0702 through 2502 and triple reduction sizes 0703 through 2503 (larger sizes are available on application) Refer to spiral Bevel rating tables for available ratios and horsepower ratings.

Spiral Bevel Reducers & Parallel Shafts

I72 Spiral Bevel Reducer Backstop Clutch Selections are based on the normal motor rating (250% maximum starting torque) with no overload for infrequent application of 6 times per 8 hours or less with at least one minute between applications. For selections at higher speeds, for more frequent applications or overloading, refer to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative. Backstops require regular inspection and maintenance as parts become worn to prevent a failure and conveyor roll back. Centrifugal Throw Out (CTO) type backstops are available at nominal additional cost and provide longer service life. They are particularly applicable in the larger sizes (700 and up) and at higher speeds. For ultimate reliability and reduced maintenance, a low speed holdback on the head shaft should be considered. For ambient temperatures exceeding 100°F or for severe dust or abrasive environments, refer to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative, as CTO type backstops or special seals and lubrication may be required. Where there is more than one drive on a head shaft, refer to your FOOTE-JONES Sales Representative for backstop selections. CAUTION : The backstop reservoir requires a separate fill of oil. Oils with EP or similar additives should not be used. Refer to the maintenance manual for detailed instructions before operation.

Sprag-type ball bearing backstops are available for all sizes of speed reducers. They grip instantaneously to prevent reverse rotation without backlash. The backstop is mounted on an extension of the first intermediate shaft on the BHE reducers 0702-2003 and is enclosed in its own housing with its own reservoir for oil; therefore, the backstop does not run at the motor RPM indicated. Refer backstop selections for reducers larger than 2003-2003 to your FOOTE-JONES representative.

Double Reduction Units Backstop locations as shown are correct for assemblies RC, RC-LCC and LCC. On all other assemblies the backstop is on the opposite side. Triple Reduction Units Backstop locations as shown are correct for assemblies LC, RCC, and LC-RCC. On all other assemblies the backstops are on the opposite side. NOTE: “X” dimensions must be checked to determine if there will be any interference between the backstop and a coupling or sprocket mounted on the low speed shaft extension.

Spiral Bevel Reducer Direct Mount Conveyor Drive I73

SHAFT MOUNT STYLE The Direct Mount arrangement has been designed as a standard modification for all double and triple reduction Spiral Bevel Reducers, sizes 1302/3 to 2502/3. Capacities are from 625 to over 2000 horsepower. A hollow or flanged hub Low Speed Shaft allows direct mounting on the conveyor head shaft and the drive connection can be either by key, keyless compression connection or flanged hub. This feature eliminates the costly low speed coupling and structural or foundation sub-base. Drive alignment is maintained by a rigid fabricated steel bedplate with a torque arm or a NEMA Flange Style Motor Mount with Coupling. Refer to standard Spiral Bevel tables for ratios and horsepower/torque ratings.

TOP MOTOR MOUNT

SCOOP MOTOR MOUNT TOP MOUNTS

Motor mounts located on top of the reducer are available for Parallel Shaft and Spiral Bevel reducers. These drives are furnished with belt drive and guard.

SCOOP MOUNTS Scoop style motor mounts are available for Parallel Shaft and Spiral Bevel reducers through a 444T frame size. These drives are furnished with coupling and guard.

FLANGE MOUNTS Flange style mounts are available on vertical units through 326T frame size. These drives are furnished with coupling.

BASE PLATES

The welded steel, one-piece machined complete design of Max-Power™ base plates insure rigidity and stability even in the roughest applications. These base plates are available for all Parallel and Spiral Bevel reducer models. They may be designed to accommodate various types of drivers and couplings. Accessories I77 PUMP LUBRICATION The standard splash type lubrication on FOOTE-JONES HLE and BHE reducers provides oil to all parts continuously during operation, without mechanical devices. When pump lubrication is required, such as incline mounting, the table below provides the proper selection for mechanical driven pumps mounted on the reducer high speed shaft. For variable input speeds, the pump should be selected at the lowest input RPM. Optional accessories include oil filters and flow indicator with micr-switch for actuating an alarm in the event of low oil flow and oil thermometer. The pump is a standard industrial rotary, positive displacement, self priming type connected to the reducer high speed shaft and operates in either direction of rotation. If the pump is located on an intermediate shaft extension, refer to FOOTE-JONES for the proper pump selection. A motorized pump is optional and should be referred to FOOTE-JONES for selection. The lube pump for BHE reducers is mounted on the intermediate shaft; therefore, the selection will be determined by the reducer input speed and the high speed gear ratio. I78 Accessories IMMERSION HEATERS Immersion heaters are available for all sizes of parallel shaft and spiral bevel speed reducers. Heater elements are rated at 11 watts density per square inch to prevent degradation of lubricating oil. A thermostat is furnished with the immersion heater and is pre-set at the factory for +40°F. The standard immersion heater is furnished with a general purpose, sheet metal enclosure. A combination moisture tight, explosion resistant enclosure is available for the immersion heater and controller. They are U.L. listed and meet Class I Groups C & D, Division 1 & 2, Class II Groups, E, F, & G, Division 1 & 2 and Class III, Division 1 & 2 specifications. For explosion proof heaters, add “X” to heater number listed below. Assemblies are available in 1/60/120/240 volts AC only. The selection tables below are for maintaining +40°F ambient and include heater part number and quantity required for reducer.

OIL SEALS All HLE & BHE reducers are equipped with spring loaded double lip oil seals that effectively retain oil and resist the entry of dust. Grease Purged Seals are available for operation in taconite or similar dust laden atmospheres. The assembly below consists of the two standard oil seals.
