Matthews, Osberg get Goodwill treatment Standing ovations are not the norm at ACBL Goodwill Committee meetings, but when you’re honoring a personality such as Jackie Matthews, simple applause just doesn’t seem to do the trick. “There’s nothing like the Jackie touch,” said fellow TD Tom Quinlan, who told the audience at the meeting on Monday about Matthews’ long, dedicated service, in particular as the Caddy Mama. Not long ago, Quinlan said, there was some talk that Matthews might be calling it quits after years as the TD in charge of caddies at NABCs. It wasn’t long before the caddies were wearing shirts with big, bold lettering: “Jackie 4 Goodwill Chair Aileen Osofsky with TDs Tom Quinlan and Jackie Matthews. Ever.” Quinlan noted that Matthews is also tournament manager for District 21. Before taking on those jobs, he said, she was a very good bridge player. Her trademark, however, is her attitude toward life, said Quinlan. “In anything she does, she wants people to have a good time – and she gets on the TDs, too, telling us to smile and be nice to people.” True to her character, when she took the podium, Matthews first statement was, “I hope you’re having a good time.” Matthews was one of several honorees at the Goodwill meeting, Continued on page 4

Strul struts to Open BAM win Aubrey Strul captured his first North American championship on Monday when his squad won the Mitchell Open BAM Teams by almost three boards. Strul, playing with Michael Becker, David Berkowitz, Larry Cohen, Lew Stansby and Chip Martel, posted 17 wins in the first final session and 20 in the second final. With carryover, their total was 39.73. Continued on page 6

Chinese team impressive in Women’s BAM win A team based in Shanghai, China, stormed into the lead after the first final session and won the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams by the surprising margin of more than eight boards. The winners are Ping Zhu, Jian Wang, You Mei Zhou, Ping Wang and Shao Hong Wu. They started Continued on page 12

Backwash Squeeze author to sign books in SF Fans of the recent hit book “The Backwash Squeeze and Other Improbable Feats” are in for a treat at the San Francisco NABC: Author Edward McPherson is in town to promote the book, and he will be available to sign copies before the 1 and 7:30 p.m. games. McPherson, 30, who lives in Brooklyn NY, wrote about his experiences of learning to play bridge at his local club and of his travels to regionals (such as Kansas City and Gatlinburg), NABCs and a slew of other venues. He also interviews some of the best-known names in bridge to give an amazing portrait of the game. The book has won critical acclaim in the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker and other publications. The book signing will be held in the Yerba Buena foyer (in front of the Baron Barclay booth) from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. and from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Books will be available from Baron Barclay.

Goodwill Message “Only a few of us will win championships, but all of us can win new friends. And, unlike the coveted silver trophies, we keep the friends without having to win them again and again.” The late Dick Frey, editor of The Bridge Bulletin, wrote these words in 1960 but they are still applicable 40 years later. Senior KO final: Levine vs. Hollman The team led by Mike Levine defeated the defending-champion Amos Kaminski squad in the semifinal round of the Senior Knockouts to earn a berth in today’s final. Levine will face the team led by Robert Hollman, who won their semifinal match against Rich DeMartino’s squad. After an even first quarter, Levine (Zeke Jabbour, Bobby Wolff, Dan Morse, Allan Siebert and Chuck Said) opened up a 23-IMP lead against Continued on page 6

Deception By Brian Senior Board 28 of the first qualifying session of the Victor Mitchell Open BAM offered an opportunity for a psychological play by declarer. Dlr: West ♠J872 Vul: N-S ♥ K Q 10 8 5 4 ♦Q4 ♣Q ♠94 ♠ Q 10 3 ♥2 ♥J3 ♦ K J 10 8 7 5 3 ♦A ♣A85 ♣KJ97642 ♠AK65 ♥A976 ♦962 ♣ 10 3 At my table West opened 3♦ and played there. North led the ♣Q. Declarer won the ♣A and cashed the ♦A. Now he wanted to get to hand to draw the rest of the trumps. Of course, it should not matter what declarer attempts, the defenders should come to two spades, a heart and a club ruff, but declarer found a psychological play to improve his chances. Almost everyone will concede a trick in their singleton suit in this situation, that being the quickest way back to hand. So our declarer instead played a low spade off the table. South won the spade and gave his partner a club ruff. North fell for it, assuming declarer to have played in standard fashion. North played the ♥K followed by the ♥Q, so declarer could ruff, draw trumps and claim an overtrick. A winning board for East-West? No. At the other table the contract was 4♦. North started with the ♥K, then switched to the singleton club, and

with his communications opened up, declarer had 12 tricks.

It’s magic! Tom Nixon is a world-class magician, specializing in sleight-of-hand card tricks. He will be performing live on Tuesday and Friday from 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Senior and Intermediate/Newcomer areas of the Golden Gate Rooms on level B2 at the Marriott. Come early when the crowds are light, and see Nixon’s tricks up close. You will see finesses you never thought possible.

Life Master news Barbara and Dick Unger of Weybridge VT traveled a long way to the Fall NABC, in part to visit their son, who lives in San Francisco. While they were in town, they ventured to the tournament and entered the Bill Holt Knockout Teams, playing with Carol Turner of San Diego and Setsuko Nakazawa of Escondido CA. They came in thirdfourth in their bracket and earned well more than the 1.74 gold points they needed to become Life Masters. Daniel Rosenblatt of Winston-Salem NC earned his gold card in the Compact Knockout Teams on Monday. He was playing with Frank Hund. Their teammates were Susan Powers and Rick Weiss. Terry Jones of Falls Church VA made Life Master in the Monday Compact Knockout Teams. He was playing with Ralph Meyer of Ridgewood NJ. Their teammates were Jennifer Nisenoff of Vienna VA and Austin Fitzgerald of Kinnelon NJ. In the aftermath of his rank change, Jones had this comment: “Yea, team!”

Entry fees Players must be ACBL members whose service fees or dues are current in order to compete in any of the following nationally ranked events: Nail Life Master Open Pairs, Smith Life Master Women's Pairs, Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, Keohane North American Swiss Teams, Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams, Marsha May Sternberg Women's Board-a-Match Teams and the Senior Knockouts. The entry fees for these contests are $18 per player per session. Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs, Miles Non-Life Master Pairs or National 99er Pairs. The entry fee is $16.50 per player per session. Regional championships are $15.50 per player per session for ACBL members, $17.50 for nonmembers. All other events are $14.50 per player per session for ACBL members, $16.50 for nonmembers.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements When using bid boxes, ACBL suggests that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word — such as “transfer” — and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid should make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS Dear New Player: So here you are! You’ve come from far and wide to play our wonderful game. I gotta tell you though, coming from far and wide is a lot harder than it used to be. When I am pulled out of line for a more thorough patdown search, it’s hard to have wonderful thoughts ... and that makes me wonder: What is it about me that consistently triggers the higher-level security response. Is it the Middle-Aged Housewife look? The blonde hair — could they have guessed I’m not really a blonde? – is this a terrorist characteristic? The decidedly unathletic body type? The huge, enormous carry on bag — certainly big enough for a bomb, but filled with Trip Survival Gear — a Cinnabon, a few books, a pillow? Somewhere along the line, I must have been flagged. I keep trying to tell them it ain’t me they’re looking for, but to no avail . . . But I digress. When you finally reach your destination, you are going to have some especially rewarding experiences. The ACBL has put together a fabulous program of lectures, workshops and games, just for you, and all free! I always consider it an honor to be asked to run one of these workshops, mostly because I enjoy being around newcomers so much. It refreshes me, motivates me, and reminds me of why I go to work every day. One thing keeps coming back to me repeatedly ... the observation that you newcomers seem to be having more fun than anyone else at the NABC. You may notice that you have your own separate rooms. Have you wondered why? You laugh too much and are having way too much fun! You are a Bad Example (just kidding). There’s no question you newcomers are as competitive as the open players. You are just as

Bidding commentary: When you have a five-card major, 10 or 11 high-card points are enough to open in fourth seat. North’s jump to 3♠ is a limit raise showing 9-11 support points with at least four-card support. Those who play a jump to 3♠ as preemptive will cuebid to show a limit raise. East is not strong enough to bid 4♥ facing a passed hand, nor is South strong enough to bid 4♠. Lead commentary: This is the story about leading the ace or the king from ace-king

eager to win masterpoints, although many of you are confused about pigmented points. (You’re not alone!) You’re just as intense when you bid and play. You enjoy your postmortems with the same verve as do your more experienced counterparts. You love looking at the hand records and examining alternatives. So just why is it that you seem to be having more fun? Hmmm. Here are a couple thoughts. 1. You still think this is just a game, not a career choice. During the holiday season, it’s easy to spot the newcomers ... they are in the malls shopping and in the store buying ingredients for cookies. Open players do all their shopping online at 3 a.m., don’t cook any major meals, get rid of visitors after a couple hours — all so they can get back to their real job . . . at the bridge club. 2. You can still have fun, even if you don’t win. A wellplayed contract, even by an Cartoons from GO AHEAD! LAUGH by Jude Goodwin. Published opponent, is a pleasure, the by Master Point Press and available at the book tables. social interaction is exciting ... especially at a tournament with This is not to say that open players aren’t all those new friends-to-be. having fun or are grumpy and accusatory. Not at 3. The game itself is your focus, rather than all. It just seems that you newcomers are having the win or loss. How the bidding went, the more fun than anyone in the joint. Whatever mysteries of the lie of the cards, is where your you’re doing, don’t stop! attention is. This is hard to verbalize, but the pleasure for many of you is still in the process P.S. I said earlier that my workshop was rather than the outcome. Do you know what I “Long Suits — Better than Money.” Well, that’s mean? a lie. Show me the money and I’ll give you my 4. And this one, I think, is the biggie. You six-card suit and take your three cards any day aren’t so positive you are right that you feel it of the week! necessary to castigate your partners and opponents P.P.S. If you have any thoughts on why about being wrong. When you have discussions, newcomers seem to be having so much fun, eyour objective isn’t determining who was right or mail me at [email protected]. I’d love to wrong. It’s more focused on, “Where did the train hear what you’re thinking. that hit me come from?” combinations. 1. The ace is led at trick one. After trick one, the king is led. 2. The king is also led in supported suits. Had East supported hearts, West should lead the king. 3. The king is also led from A-K-x-(x) in any suit partner has bid, supported or not. Chances are it will have been supported, but it doesn’t matter, the king is led. Leading the ace in a suit partner has bid denies the king. With A-K blank, everything is reversed. Defensive commentary: East plays the ♥Q

at trick one, promising the jack (or a singleton). West leads a low heart at trick two and East wins and leads a diamond to West’s king. West should exit safely with a diamond. Play commentary: After winning the second diamond, South drives out the ♠A. Assuming East wins and gets out with a diamond, South must locate the ♣Q. West, a passed hand, has turned up with the ♥A K and the ♦K. As it is unlikely that West has the ♣Q, guess who does?

Maryann Bond, Roberta Lovell and Connie Weed dropped in on the Intermediate/New comer area Monday evening after losing a knockout teams match. All three are from Fargo ND, as is missing teammate, Joey Gilbertson. The women said there is a strong contingent from Fargo at the NABC. Ask them about uff da!

Goodwill Continued from page 1 hosted by ACBL Goodwill Chair Aileen Osofsky. One of her jobs on Monday was making Sharon Osberg an honorary member of the national Goodwill Committee. Former ACBL General Counsel Jeff Polisner introduced Osberg, a banking executive and former world champion who often plays bridge with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and investment guru Warren Buffett. Polisner said Osberg is great a getting publicity for bridge. “She plays with people who aren’t very good – like Gates and Buffett – and she still gets great publicity for bridge.” When she took the podium, Osberg told Polisner, “I’m going to tell Bill and Warren what you said.” Osberg, two-time winner of the Venice Cup – the world’s top women’s team event – said she was appearing at the meeting on behalf of the School Bridge League. She said Gates and Buffett have contributed significant dollars to advance the cause of getting more young people interested in the game. The latest effort began after she wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times. She was contacted by The League, a New Jersey-based organization with the infrastructure to set up bridge classes in schools all over the U.S. “We are now targeting hundreds of schools and thousands of kids,” said Osberg, “and I hope to have an update you next year about how wonderfully successful we have been.” Another highlight of the meeting was the introduction of the medal winners from the recently concluded World Bridge Team Championships in Shanghai, China. First to be congratulated were the Venice Cup winners – Hansa Narasimhan, Jill Levin, Jill Meyers, Irina Levitina, JoAnna Stansby, Debbie Rosenberg and non-playing captain Gail Greenberg. They received enthusiastic applause from the gathering. Other medal winners were also acknowledged and cheered: Bermuda Bowl silver George Jacobs, Ralph Katz, Zia Mahmood, Michael Rosenberg, Howard Weinstein, Steve Garner, npc Jan Martel and coach Chip Martel Senior Bowl gold: Rose Meltzer, Alan Sontag, Roger Bates, Grant Baze, Lew Stansby and Bart Bramley, npc Kyle Larsen and coach Patty Magnus. Senior Bowl bronze: Gaylor Kasle, Dan Morse, Bobby Wolff, Dan Gerstman, John Sutherlin, Ron Smith and npc Donna Compton. Osofsky started the program by acknowledging the passing of three Goodwill members: Paul Soloway, Joan Cohen and Bill “Kurly” Holt. District 21 representative Roger Smith welcomed everyone, then turned the podium over to NABC Chair Bruce Blakely, who encouraged the crowd to get away from the bridge tables, if only briefly, to see some of the city of San Francisco. ACBL President Sharon Fairchild, nearing the end of her term, reflected on her travels during 2007, thanking “everyone who made me feel so welcome.”

Daily Bulletin

NABC Diary Which way is up? Every time you think you’ve seen everything, someone like Glenn Eisenstein stops by the Daily Bulletin office to prove you wrong. It seems that Eisenstein’s teammates in the Victory Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams went to the wrong section when it was time for the game to begin. These are No. 3 seeds, mind you – world champions with piles of masterpoints and vast experience. That error by itself would not have been a huge problem. The team that was supposed to be where Eisenstein’s teammates went might arrive (or already be at the table) and everything would be hunky-dory after the players made it to their correct tables. Unfortunately, the same error was committed by another No. 3 seed, so both teams played the entire session out of place. The upshot was that the two teams had no comparisons – and they messed up scores for all the pairs they played against. Eisenstein said he was very impressed with Tournament Director Steve Bates and his assistants for their hours of work in attempting to come up with some valid scores out of the mess. Eisenstein’s final comment: “It takes world champions to do something like this.”

Who Noozit? Among the more interested spectators at the Fall NABC is one Tim Lundeen, CEO and founder of Web Crossing Inc., a San Francisco company that creates message boards and social networking software. At one time, he was a serious bridge player – he and Chip Martel were frequent partners more than 25 years ago – but he quit the game to start his career and a family. Because the NABC is in San Francisco, Lundeen added a gadget to his Noozit.com web site – an online newspaper – that allows for registered users to insert bridge deals and write about them. There are several deals at the Noozit site now, including one written by Bob Hamman and some by Martel. In his day, said Lundeen, he was a “pretty decent” bridge player. On a tour of the tournament site with Martel, Lundeen said watching all the bridge made him “think seriously” about starting to play again.

Checking the dummy New Life Masters are usually reported elsewhere in this publication, but one of ACBL’s newest, Yvonne Snyder, didn’t earn her gold card at the NABC. It happened three weeks ago at a STaC in Southern California. Yvonne’s partner was Judy Seger of Los Angeles. For those who don’t know, Yvonne is married to the legendary Eddie Kantar, who has written about playing with her in the Home Game articles published for many years in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin. The Home Game pieces are meant to be fun, and over the years Yvonne has received more than her share of kidding from her husband. It’s different now that Yvonne has achieved higher status in ACBL rankings. “The bottom line,” said Kantar, “is she doesn’t want to play with me any more – and she’s looking at the dummy to see if I bid properly.” Perhaps the author of the next Home Game story will be Yvonne.

Sam would approve

NABC Chair Bruce Blakely and Roger Smith, District 21 representative on the ACBL Board of Directors.

Phyllis Harlan, who represents District 15 on the ACBL Board of Directors, was kidding CEO Jay Baum the other night at the Patron Member dinner. It seems Baum was greeting everyone at the door as they made it to the president’s suite at the Marriott. “I see you’ve been promoted to doorman,” said Harlan. Answered Baum: “I’m practicing for my job in retirement: Welcome to Walmart! Welcome to Walmart!”

Endplay By Brian Senior Deep Finesse assures us that South can make 3NT on Board 19 of the second qualifying session of the Victor Mitchell Open BAM (hands rotated), but it failed far more often than not. Dlr: East ♠ J 10 9 7 6 Vul: N-S ♥J97 ♦K53 ♣ 10 5 ♠A82 ♠Q543 ♥A84 ♥532 ♦Q92 ♦ 10 8 7 6 ♣J972 ♣K6 ♠K ♥ K Q 10 6 ♦AJ4 ♣AQ843 One of Europe's top lady players, Nevena Senior, declared 3NT on the lead of a low heart, which she won with the king. She played the ♠K, and that was ducked. Now a heart to the 9 was followed by the ♠J, won by West's ace while declarer pitched a club. West could have cashed the ♥A now, but it would have made no difference. He actually switched to a low club for the 10, king and ace, and Nevena played a heart. North won the ♥A and played the ♣J, which was ducked. North was endplayed. A club or a diamond would give a trick in that suit, and a spade would establish that suit while the ♦K was still in dummy to provide an entry. There was no escape, and declarer had nine tricks and a winning board. It may seem that the defense would have been better placed had East won the second spade and played a diamond through. Declarer can still prevail. She wins the ♦A and plays a heart to West's ace. Again, West is endplayed. If he plays a spade, he establishes dummy's winners, while a diamond gives the ninth trick in that suit. After a club to the king and ace, declarer cashes the fourth heart and North is squeezed in three suits. Again, there is no escape.

Tough Defense By Brian Senior 4♥ was a popular, if unsuccessful, spot on this deal from the first qualifying session of the Victor Mitchell Open BAM (hands rotated). Dlr: West Vul: E-W ♠ 10 9 8 6 ♥9832 ♦ 10 ♣ 10 8 7 6

♠KQJ ♥KQ6 ♦Q73 ♣AQ54

♠A7 ♥ 10 ♦AKJ9652 ♣K93

♠5432 ♥AJ754 ♦84 ♣J2 West makes the natural lead of the singleton diamond, which East overtakes to play two more winning diamonds, probably signaling for clubs in the process. There is a lie of the cards that permits 4♥ to make from here, but at BAM scoring, the practical declarer will accept one down and pitch a club at trick three. West throws two spades. At my table, East now switched to ♠A and another spade, and I could draw trumps and claim the remainder. South missed an opportunity for a defense that would have been a worthy story for the Daily Bulletin. When the third diamond scores, there is a defense for two down - play a fourth diamond! Declarer will ruff in dummy as North throws a third spade. Declarer cashes the ♥K and ♥Q, then may ruff a club back to hand to draw the remaining trumps - but that exhausts him of trumps and he cannot get a spade trick. If, on the other hand, declarer establishes the spades before drawing trumps, West gets a spade ruff. I wonder if anyone found that defense?

Fantoni, Nunes won the 2006 “Azzura” Ribbon Pairs Italian superstars Fulvio Fantoni and Claudio Nunes captured the victory in last year's Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, becoming the first pair from their country to accomplish the feat. Fantoni and Nunes, gold medalists at the Open Pairs in the 2002 World Bridge Championships in Montreal, won last year's Blue Ribbon contest by one board over runners-up Drew Casen and Jm Krekorian. The event The Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs ranks with the Life Master Pairs as one of the most prestigious – and toughest – pair events on the ACBL calendar. Like the LM Pairs, the Blue Ribbon Pairs is played over three days and includes two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions. Entry is restricted to winners and runners-up in regional championships – plus high finishers in North American championships, members of current Grand National district championship teams, members of current official teams representing ACBL and the top 100 lifetime masterpoint holders. The Blue Ribbon Pairs was renamed the Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1999 to honor one of bridge's all-time great players, writers, administrators and the authority on the laws of the game. Kaplan (1925-1997) won his first North American championship in 1953 – the Vanderbilt – and his last in 1997 – the Open Swiss Teams at the Spring NABC in Dallas. Kaplan was recognized as the world's foremost authority on the laws of duplicate and rubber bridge. He became co-chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission in 1978 and was co-chairman of the WBF Laws Commission at the time of his death. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1993. In 1995 he was inducted into the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame and the WBF Hall of Fame. Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs begins today The Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs, a national-rated four-session event limited to players with fewer than 5000 masterpoints, begins today. The contest features a two-session qualifier and a two-session final tomorrow. The inaugural Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs were held at the 2005 Fall NABC in Denver. The winners were Marty Harris of Chicago IL and Jacob Morgan of Madison WI. In 2006, Joe Houde of St. Augustine FL and Divakar Bhargava of Richmond VA were the champs. There is a pre-qualification requirement: players must have earned a Blue Ribbon qualification to participate. (Players from outside North America must be granted a waiver to enter. Contact ACBL Chief Tournament Director Rick Beye at the Tournament Operations office or at the selling locations prior to game time.) The entry fee is $16.50 per player per session.

Last year’s winners: Joe Houde (left) and Divakar Bhargava won the Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs.

Open BAM Continued from page 1 In second with 36.83 was the Russian-Polish team of Andrew Gromov (captain), Aleksander Dubinin, Cezary Balicki and Adam Zmudzinski. The Gromov team won Sunday’s qualifying round, and maintained their lead after the first final session. The Strul team, however, was already making their move, trailing Gromov in second place. But Strul’s strong performance in the second final allowed them to overtake the leaders and cruise to the win. Strul, originally from South Africa, is retired and has lived in the U.S. for 30 years. He lives in Delray Beach FL. Partner Michael Becker, of Boca Raton FL, chalked up his first win in the event. Teammates Berkowitz, Cohen, Stansby and Martel have each won the Open BAM at least one time previously.

Senior KO Continued from page 1 Kaminski (Yeshayahu Levit, Pinhas Romik, Marcelo Branco, George Mittelman and Arno Hobart) by halftime. Their lead dropped to 19 IMPs after three sets, and Kaminski turned up the pressure in the last quarter, but it was not enough. Levine won 121-112. Hollman (Dennis Clerkin, Jerry Clerkin, Brenda Keller, Bruce Ferguson) took off to a 30-IMP lead early in the match against DeMartino (John Stiefel, Geoffrey Brod, Mel Colchamiro and Pat McDevitt). They led the rest of the match, but a furious lastquarter rally by DeMartino made the match close. Hollman hung on, however, to win 158-151.

Pass 2♥ Pass Pass 4NT Pass Pass 6♠ All Pass West leads a low trump against your fine spade slam and East follows. How do you plan to make 12 tricks? Solution ♠ K Q 10 8 4 ♥Q6 ♦QJ7 ♣KQ6 ♠932 ♠6 ♥K94 ♥ 10 8 5 3 2 ♦ A 10 3 2 ♦64 ♣873 ♣ J 10 9 2 ♠AJ75 ♥AJ7 ♦K985 ♣A5 You should draw three rounds of trumps with the king, queen and ace so that you end in hand to lead a low diamond toward dummy. When the West has the ♦A, the contract is assured. If he plays the ace, you will make five trumps, one heart, three diamonds and three clubs. Suppose instead West follows with a low diamond and dummy’s queen holds. Then you will cross back to hand with the ♣A to lead a second low diamond towards dummy. On the diagrammed deal, when the ♦J wins the trick, you will then cash the three top clubs and discard the ♦9 from hand before exiting with a diamond. West will win the ♦A and have to lead a heart or concede a ruffand-discard by leading the ♦10.

You might ask, “What happens if East takes the queen or jack of diamonds with the ace and exits with a heart?” Then you should rise with the ♥A and cash all of your black-suit winners. If the ♥K has not appeared and there is no reason to play East for diamond length, cash your remaining diamond winners and hope that the ♦9 is high.

Sub-Moysian fit By Brian Senior The key on this deal from the second qualifying session of the Victor Mitchell Open BAM was to play game in the 4-2 heart fit - a tough challenge, but one that was achieved by at least two pairs. Dlr: North ♠ 10 5 3 2 Vul: Both ♥K4 ♦Q5 ♣ A K J 10 3 ♠764 ♠QJ9 ♥975 ♥ 10 8 3 2 ♦ A 10 4 3 ♦K9862 ♣654 ♣7 ♠AK8 ♥AQJ6 ♦J7 ♣Q982 West North East South Hackett Armstrong 1♠ Pass 2♣ Pass 2♠ Pass 2NT Pass 3♣ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass This one will need some translation. 1♠ showed four or more cards in the context of a 1416 1NT and the 2♣ response was two-way, either a natural game-force or a constructive three- or four-card spade raise. 2♠ showed four spades in a minimum hand and was passable by a limit-raise hand. John Armstrong's 2NT rebid confirmed the game-force, and now Paul Hackett showed his club support - though perhaps not quite this good. 3♥ was the natural continuation, exploring the possibility of playing 3NT. Hackett could see that diamonds were a problem and judged well to raise to 4♥ rather than go back to clubs - and that suited Armstrong just fine. West North East South Nystrom Berthau 1NT Pass 2♣ Pass 2♠ Pass 3♦ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♣ Pass 4♥ All Pass Swedish pair, Fredrik Nystrom and Peter Berthau found a different route to the top spot. 1NT was 14-16 and 2♣ Stayman. Berthau next used a shape enquiry and the 3♥ response showed clubs. 4♣ was natural and forcing and Nystrom, with great trumps, cuebid the ♥K. Berthau could see that there was no diamond control and that partner had to hold ♥K-x-(x), which offered an excellent alternative to the club game, so he passed, which must have worried Nystrom until he saw the dummy. Well judged.

Monitoring At this and future North American Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review. By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

TOURNAMENT APPEALS In order to keep the bridge public informed of appeals results in a timely fashion, the NABC Daily Bulletin staff publishes write-ups. Every effort is made to ensure that these reports are accurate and complete. However, before they are published in the NABC Appeals Casebook revisions may be made.

1♥ 1♠ Dbl All Pass Facts: The director was called after the afternoon session. 1♣ was, by agreement, natural. The Ruling: In accordance with Law 40A, a player is permitted to make an intentionally misleading call. Since there is no evidence of a concealed understanding and West's double is considered to be a normal action, the table result of 1♠ doubled, down one, North-South minus 200, was allowed to stand. The Appeal: North said that he believed West's double was very unusual, since West would not be interested in defending 1♠ doubled. He said he had given West's bidding problem to three "nationally experienced" players and no one chose to double as West had done. He said, "If I thought double were a usual bid, I wouldn't be here." East made no assertion that his hand was missorted. The 1♣ bid, by agreement, was natural. The Decision: While recognizing the eccentricity of East's bidding, the committee noted that Law 40 (noted by the director) gives a player the right to make intentionally misleading calls. As a matter of bridge judgment, the committee found nothing abnormal about West's reopening double. Accordingly, the committee could find no infraction or impropriety on which to base an adjustment. Although East's opening 1♣ bid was eccentric and his pass of the 1♠ overcall arguably unusual, there was nothing to indicate they were predicated on any impropriety or infraction. West's 1♥ bid was ordinary and his double was hardly unusual, so there did not appear to be "fielding of a psych." The director informed North that if he felt there should be a record of this East-West's bidding, a player memo would be appropriate. The committee believed that a bridge appeals committee was not the proper venue to air this matter. Therefore, an appeal without merit warning (AWMW) was issued to N-S. Women’s BAM Continued from page 1 the day about half a board behind the leaders, but scored 18 out of 26 in the first final session to lead by nearly six boards with a session to play. They scored well in the evening session to win going away. Second place went to Valerie Westheimer, Migry Zur Campanile, Hjordis Eythorsdottir and JoAnn Sprung. The winners play under the team name JiefongHeji, a Chinese newspaper and restaurant chain, respectively. Most have had some international experience, although communicating with them is difficult because they know little English. Wu knows a bit of English, and she said all team members play Precision. They have been granted waivers to play in the Blue Ribbon Pairs, which starts today. Asked about their chances in the six-session event, Wu said, “We just want to get to the final.” Bo Xiao, a native of China who lives in California, acted as an interpreter of sorts. He said a couple of team members have jobs, but most just play bridge. “The game is so wonderful,” he said. “they just want to play.”

Young players, take notice Are you 20 or younger? Are you interested in playing in a world bridge championship next year in Beijing, China? If so, e-mail Jason Feldman at [email protected] for information about the tournament and finding partners.

Senior moment Mel Colchamiro played the following deal (rotated) carefully to earn his team a swing in the quarterfinal round of the Senior Knockouts. Colchamiro was playing with team captain Rich DeMartino in their match against Tony Kasday’s squad. (1) Weak. (2) Lead directing. West began with the ♠J to East’s ace. On a low heart switch, declarer played the queen, and when that won, proceeded to eliminate the spades. After cashing the ♠K (pitching a club from dummy), Colchamiro ruffed a spade, cashed the ♦A K, ruffed a diamond in the closed hand and ruffed his last spade. This was the position with the lead in dummy:

the last enemy trump and claim. If he pitched a diamond instead, declarer would win the ♣A and exit with the ♣Q. West would win the trick, but declarer would take the last two with the ♥A J over East’s ♥K 7. Making five doubled for plus 650. This was a pickup of 10 IMPs for the DeMartino team when the result at the other table was 4♠ by East-West, down two, for 200.

San Francisco 1996: A look back Here are some interesting deals from the 1996 Fall NABC in San Francisco.

Deja vu Larry Dawson had an eerie feeling as he played this deal. Dawson was playing with Dick Walker. Dlr: West ♠AK84 Vul: None ♥K97 ♦A9643 ♣K ♠ Q J 10 2 ♠975 ♥QJ86 ♥42 ♦Q87 ♦ K 10 ♣92 ♣ Q 10 7 6 4 3 ♠63 ♥ A 10 5 3 ♦J52 ♣AJ85 North South 1♦ 1♥ 1♠ 1NT 2NT 3NT Pass West got off to the imaginative lead of the ♠2, ducked by Dawson to East’s 7. East returned a spade to dummy’s ace, and Dawson began to experience deja vu as he eyed the diamond holding between his hand and dummy. “It was just like a hand I played in 1990, the last time the NABCs were held in San Francisco,” Dawson said. In dummy with the ♠A, Dawson played a low diamond toward his hand. East popped up with the ♦K. Dawson, had seen this same layout before. Convinced that fate had dealt him the same arrangement, Dawson won the spade return played wide open. He cashed the ♣K and the ♥K, then played a heart to his hand and cashed the ♣A. Then came the test. He put the ♦J on the table — low, low, 10. Bingo! The next diamond picked up the queen, and Dawson had 10 tricks and a fine score for plus 430. “The only reason I played it that way was because of 1990,” said Dawson.

Fit to be tied Down three in a freely bid game usually doesn’t feel like a good result, especially when an opponent has made a tricky opening lead you didn’t work out. Thus, Paul Soloway was happy to end up with a push on this deal from the Open Board-a-Match Teams. Soloway and Bobby Goldman played against Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell. Dlr: North ♠KJ2 Vul: E–W ♥AQ4 ♦J7542 ♣J4 ♠A83 ♠ Q 10 7 4 ♥8632 ♥7 ♦83 ♦A96 ♣ A 10 8 6 ♣Q9752 ♠963 ♥ K J 10 9 5 ♦ K Q 10 ♣K3 North South Goldman Soloway 1♦ 1♥ 1NT 2♦ (1) 2♥ 3NT 4♥ Pass (1) Game-forcing checkback. Meckstroth hit on the diabolical opening lead of a low spade and Soloway, hoping for some luck, played low from dummy. Rodwell won the ♠10 and shot back a club. Soloway misguessed by playing the king, and Meckstroth won the ace to return the ♠8. Soloway put in the jack, losing to the queen, and then saw Rodwell cash the ♣Q and return a spade to Meckstroth’s ace. The defenders still had the ♦A coming, so Soloway finished at minus 150 in the pushy game and was pretty sure the board was a lost cause.

Soloway was surprised, therefore, to find that teammates Mark Lair and Richard Schwartz were plus 150 on the deal despite defending a different contract. At the other table, North became declarer at 3NT and misguessed on the lead of a low club from East. The defenders took five clubs and two aces for their own plus 150 and a push — the hard way.

All fouled up On some deals, even if you’re a world champion, you’re just not destined for glory. That happened on this deal from the Open Board-a-Match Teams — and John Russell was right there to take advantage. He was playing with Rob Crawford against a pair of world champions. Dlr: East ♠Q93 Vul: Both ♥742 ♦J9875 ♣97 ♠8 ♠ J 10 4 2 ♥KQ863 ♥ 10 9 ♦A3 ♦ K 10 6 4 ♣ K J 10 5 2 ♣643 ♠AK765 ♥AJ5 ♦Q2 ♣AQ8 West North East South Crawford Russell Pass 1♠ 2♠ (1) Pass 3♣ Dbl Pass 3♠ All Pass (1) Top and bottom cuebid: clubs and at least four hearts. West got the defense off to the wrong start with the ♣10 lead. Russell won the ♣Q, cashed the ace and ruffed a club in dummy. Next he played a low diamond to his ♦Q and West’s ♦A. West had a chance to defeat the contract by playing another diamond to East’s ♦10 so that East could make the killing heart switch, but West got out with the ♥K to the 2, 10 and ace. Russell then played a spade to dummy’s queen and a low spade toward his hand, East splitting his spade honors as Russell won the ace. Next he played a low diamond from his hand, putting in dummy’s jack. East won the ♦K and continued with the ♥9. Russell played low, and the blockage in hearts kept the defenders from cashing two tricks in that suit immediately. East had no choice but to continue with the ♦10 — a spade play would be into Russell’s tenace — but Russell ruffed and exited with the ♥J, leaving West on play at trick 11 with the fourth and last trick for the defense. Russell held the ♠K 7, East the ♠10 5. That was plus 140 and a clear win on the board.

A successful falsecard A simple falsecard was the difference on this deal from the Life Master Open Pairs. Dlr: North ♠A92 Vul: Both ♥AJ74 ♦Q3 ♣Q652 ♠QJ876 ♠ 10 3 ♥3 ♥ K 10 8 5 ♦J654 ♦K9872 ♣J83 ♣A9 ♠K54 ♥Q962 ♦ A 10 ♣ K 10 7 4 West North East South Smith Mohan Oshlag S ch u l l eM o h an 1♣ 1♦ 1♥ Dbl Redbl Pass 2NT 3♦ 3♥ Pass 3NT All Pass John Mohan’s redouble was a muddying action — ordinarily it means that he has only three-card support. His subsequent 3♥ bid showed that he had good heart support, but Kay Schulle-Mohan, with a reasonably square hand, decided to go for notrump.

Dave Smith led a low diamond, and SchulleMohan guessed correctly, winning the 10. Hearts looked like a good source of tricks, so declarer led a low heart and finessed the jack — successfully! Not only did Richard Oshlag not win the trick, he falsecarded with the ♥8. Look at the situation from Schulle-Mohan’s point of view. It appeared that West had the ♥K. Since Oshlag dropped the ♥8, it seemed likely that he had the ♥10 8 and Smith the ♥K 5 3. So Schulle-Mohan, led the ♣Q. Oshlag won the ace and cleared the diamond suit. Declarer led the ♥Q, hoping to pin the 10, and was disappointed when this lost to the king. She was even unhappier to note that Smith had not followed suit, so she was going to be able to take only two heart tricks. If Oshlag had won the first round of hearts, declarer would have discovered the situation by playing the ♥A. Then she could have finessed the ♥9 for a third heart trick. This would have led to down one. As it was, she had to settle for down two.

Brilliancy prize — not! It’s the Swiss teams, round seven, and you are chugging along in the middle of the field. The current match is going well — in fact, it is going so well, you can afford to experiment in search of that ever-elusive brilliancy prize. The opponents are in 4♥ on the auction shown below. You lead the ♦A to see: Dummy ♠AQ6 ♥972 ♦J875 ♣ 10 7 4 You ♠ K 10 8 7 4 ♥K6 ♦A43 ♣952 West North East South You Partner Pass Pass 2♦ 2♥ 2♠ 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass Everyone follows to your ♦A lead, and you play a second diamond. Declarer ruffs and starts thinking. You build up a picture of declarer’s hand, perhaps: ♠J x x ♥A Q J x x ♦ x ♣A K J x. Declarer will take a spade finesse, then play a heart to the queen. If you duck, declarer will use his remaining entry to repeat the heart finesse. Now you win, cash your spade and exit with a diamond. Declarer must lose a club at the end. If you win the first heart, declarer can use his remaining entry to take the club finesse and will come home. Your mind is made up. Declarer takes the spade finesse and plays a heart to the queen. You duck, declarer shrugs his shoulders, lays down the ♥A, dropping your king and partner’s jack, and gives up a spade and a club for his contract. The full deal: ♠AQ6 ♥972 ♦J875 ♣ 10 7 4 ♠ K 10 8 7 4 ♠3 ♥K6 ♥J5 ♦A43 ♦ K Q 9 62 ♣952 ♣KQ873 ♠J952 ♥ A Q 10 8 4 3 ♦ 10 ♣AJ This may remind you of the Victor Mollo quote in which he says, “Maybe if you didn’t try to be so clever, you wouldn’t end up looking so stupid.”

Ruling the Game by Mike Flader, Associate National Tournament Director

Claims Part 1 Problems with faulty or poorly stated claims help directors keep busy at tournaments. This series of articles will help players and directors deal more effectively with disputed claims. A claim is defined as a statement by a player that he will win a specific number of the remaining tricks in a deal. In order for a statement to be a claim, it must refer to tricks other than the one currently in progress. A player may also be deemed to have claimed when he faces his hand or suggests that play be curtailed. Should a player make a claim? While it is true that claims occasionally create problems, the answer to this question is almost certainly yes. Prolonging the play of a hand unnecessarily is actually a violation of the Laws. How should a claim be made? Any claim should be accompanied by a clarification statement, a comprehensive statement about the order in which the claimer intends to win the number of tricks he is claiming. If there is an outstanding trump at the time of the claim, it should be mentioned. If finesses remain to be taken, the intended order of play should be stated. At the time of his claim, the claimer should face his unplayed cards, allowing his opponents time to examine his hand and the claim. What happens next? 1. The opponents may choose to acquiesce if they agree that the claim is valid. Then, they move on to the next board. 2. If the opponents take issue with the claim, they call the director. Until he arrives at the table, no one takes any further action. 3. Play ceases after a claim! It is contrary to the Laws to play on, and the director is to void any plays made after a claim was disputed. What procedure should the director follow when he gets to the table? 1. Find out what the contract is. 2. Ask the claimer to repeat his clarification statement. 3. Have his opponents face their unplayed cards and state their objections to the claim. 4. Adjudicate the claim as equitably as possible to both sides, resolving doubtful issues in favor of the non-claiming side. As I mentioned earlier, some contested claims are merely badly stated. Others are bad claims. The following two deals from recent NABCs will illustrate the difference.

♠ 10 9 7 6 2 ♥ J 10 ♦K862 ♣KQ

♠KJ83 ♥K8 ♦QJ ♣ 10 9 4 3 2

♠Q ♥AQ7653 ♦A7543 ♣7

♠A54 ♥942 ♦ 10 9 ♣AJ865

The contract was 4♥ by South. West led the ♣K which won. West then played a spade to the ace, and the low club return was ruffed by declarer. A low diamond toward dummy was captured by West’s king. The diamond exit was won in dummy. The ♠K J were next (South pitching diamonds) followed by the trump king and a trump to the queen in the closed hand. At that point, declarer claimed, saying only, “my hand is good.” After some discussion, the director was called. In this case, the director should rule that declarer was aware of the

outstanding trump. The line of play adopted is consistent with this state of affairs. Once he has drawn exactly two rounds of trumps, he knows his hand is good, and he most assuredly knows that one trump is still outstanding.

♠4 ♥A9 ♦8765 ♣KJ8742

♠KQ3 ♥ J 10 5 ♦ K Q J 10 3 2 ♣6 ♠ 10 8 7 5 ♥Q842 ♦4 ♣ Q 10 9 3 ♠AJ962 ♥K763 ♦A9 ♣A5

The contract was 6♠ by South. The lead was the ♥A. West switched to a diamond, won by declarer’s ace. A trump to dummy’s ♠K was followed by the ♠Q on which West pitched a club. At this point, declarer detached the ♠A from her hand, faced her cards, and said she would overtake her second diamond in the dummy. West said he could ruff the diamond. Here, the director should rule in favor of the defense. North has failed to mention the 4–1 trump break. Additionally, she could have claimed after the king of spades cashed and both opponents followed suit since only a 5–0 break could have hurt her. Those two facts make it possible, indeed even likely, that she was not aware of the distribution of the trump suit.

Part 2 Let’s examine how to adjudicate a claim when there is an outstanding trump. Much of the information contained in this article was borrowed from the TechFiles section of ACBLScore, an invaluable aid to directors. Law 70C states that the director is to award a trick to the opponents when a trump is outstanding and: 1. the claimer made no statement about the outstanding trump, 2. it is at all likely that the claimer at the time of his statement was unaware that a trump remained in the opponent’s hand, and 3. a trick could be lost to that trump through any normal play of the remaining cards. How can we determine if the declarer was unaware of an outstanding trump? He may admit to having forgotten it, but frequently the line of play adopted by the declarer is a clue to his intent. For example, if he has a holding such as A–10–x–x–x opposite K–J–x–x–x and he cashes the ace (or king) and claims when both opponents follow, it is very unlikely that he has miscounted trumps. Or if he holds A–10–x–x–x opposite K–Q–9–x and leads the king of the suit, claiming when both opponents follow to the trick, he has not forgotten about the outstanding trumps. But, if he played a second round of the suit, and one of the opponents showed out, we should be more skeptical — he may have missed the discard. Once we decide that declarer may have been unaware of an outstanding trump, we are to award a trick(s) to the defenders if they can make a trick with the trump through any normal play of the remaining cards. Thus, if dummy remains with three aces, one of them the ace of trumps, and declarer says dummy is high, a defender holding a trump will make a trick with that trump if he can ruff either of dummy’s side suit winners. The declarer cannot be allowed to play a round of trumps as a safety check if he forgot that the trump was outstanding or forgot to mention that he was playing the ace of trumps first. In general, declarer is never allowed to play trumps to draw any trumps of which he may have been unaware if doing so would be to his advantage.

What if the remaining cards in the dummy had been the 2 of trumps along with two side-suit winners when declarer made his claim? A defender remains with the 3 of trumps and two winners in another side suit. In this case, it cannot be right to make the declarer lead the trump first since playing trumps in a case like this is irrational. So in this case, the defender is entitled to one trick only. When the dummy’s trump is the queen and one of the defenders holds the king, the situation becomes murkier since it may not be irrational to try to cash a “high trump” just in case there are any lurkers. While it is dangerous for the director to try to rigidly follow guideline since the chance exists that he may use them instead of common sense, there are some guidelines that we may follow when adjudicating a claim: 1. The order of play of non-trump suits should be the worst possible for the claimer (although play within the suit is normally from the top down). 2. Declarer may never attempt to draw any trumps of which he was likely unaware, if doing so would be to his advantage. 3. t is considered a normal play for declarer to take a safety check with a “high” trump. 4. Declarer should not be forced to play the remainder of his trumps to his disadvantage if both opponents have shown out of the suit.

Memorials and Honorariums In Memory of Betty Condon

Honoring Lura Crossley

Betty was born in the Philippines and lived in the Far East, the Middle East and Europe all before age 45. She was an elegant and sophisticated lady who was well educated and very talented. She attended Washington University in St. Louis (studying English) and graduated from the University of Hawaii as a fine arts major. Her hobbies included painting and sketching, golf and skeet shooting, gardening and flower arranging and bridge! She told me that she made a promise to herself not to introduce me to bridge: She thought I might really get too much into it! (How did she know?) As a result, I never played with her. Pity. — Barbara Sonsini

Lura Crossley has had a profound impact on duplicate bridge in the San Francisco Bay Area dating back to the 1950s. Lura and her husband Cap Crossley Jr., founded the Marin Unit in 1954. By 1959, there were 250 members. She became a Life Master in 1959, the same year Cap was president of the Western Conference. Lura started running bridge games and teaching in her home in Greenbrae in the Fifties. She held duplicate games in many locations throughout Marin until securing a permanent “home” in Larkspur for the Crossley Bridge Center in 1970. Lura’s mantra was “good bridge and good fellowship.” She was known for having a friendly game with wonderful homemade

refreshments, and made many bridge players feel at home at her club. In the Sixties and Seventies, Lura taught thousands of students in department stores and at clubs around the S.F. Bay Area. She also lectured and directed bridge cruises as the West Coast Representative of Travel with Goren, traveling the world many times over. Lura has continued to teach at the annual Crossley Bridge Camp and lecture on cruises into her 80s. Her three sons, Bill, Dave and Bob were all young Life Masters, winning tournaments in their teens. Her daughter Janet is a part-time bridge teacher and director. Lura, while still involved with the Crossley Bridge Center, is turning over the reigns to Bob and Janet, but still enjoys playing bridge whenever she can.
