Descriptive List of Courses Taught ATEC 101, Fundamentals of Audio Technology (3 credits) Audio Technology Program, American University Students learn about the generation, transmission, and detection of sound; properties of sounds; history and aesthetics of electro-acoustic music and components; anatomy of audio equipment; professions in the field of audio technology; and the global structure of audio related industries. Students will apply basic recording and editing techniques in the completion of audio and audiovisual projects. Lecture Course. Taken concurrently with ATEC-102.

Matthew Boerum – Curriculum Vitae 2013 ATEC 102, Audio Technology Laboratory (1) Audio Technology Program, American University Students in this class apply recording and editing techniques discussed in ATEC 101 to real world music. The students will also learn basic digital signal processing techniques. Lab Course. ATEC 301, Digital Audio Workstations I (3) Audio Technology Program, American University This course provides intermediate level students with fundamental knowledge of the basic principles of non-linear digital audio editing software. Topics include creating and managing digital audio workstation sessions, importing media, basic editing and mixing techniques, external controllers, managing sessions and tracks, recording and editing MIDI and audio, timescaling, and automation. ATEC 311, Sound Studio Techniques I (3) Audio Technology Program, American University This course explores multi-track recording techniques as applied to professional sound systems. Studio consoles, signal path, microphone configuration and placement, signal to noise ratio, and other relevant topics will be studied. Students gain experience with hands on projects in the recording studio. ATEC 396, Live Sound Reinforcement (3) Audio Technology Program, American University This course teaches techniques and tools of live sound reinforcement. The content combines product awareness with ear training and hands-on practice. Students have direct experience with audio consoles, various types of microphones and signal processing, and the use of monitor systems and other devices for producing sound for live events. Students participate in simulations and live productions. ATEC 401, Digital Audio Workstations II (3) Audio Technology Program, American University This course is a continuation of materials presented in ATEC-301 and provides students with more advanced knowledge of the principles of non-linear digital audio editing software. Topics include analyses of digital audio workstation systems, high end user systems and interfaces, editing and mixing techniques, external controllers, managing sessions and tracks, recording and editing MIDI and audio, and advanced automation techniques. ATEC 431, Studio Management (3) Audio Technology Program, American University Students learn troubleshooting in regard to audio technology equipment and software. Topics covered include tape head realignment and maintenance, tracing signal flow problems, soldering techniques, patchbay design, power/grounding issues, and studio A/V design and installation. Projects include ribbon microphone design, guitar pedal assembly, gobo design and construction, and studio interconnections mapping. Students will cooperatively learn and collaborate on a final project, proposing a fully designed studio construction bid packet to meet budgeting and project goals. ATEC 490, Independent Study in Audio Technology (1-6) Audio Technology Program, American University Supervision of student projects in audio electronics assembly, design and repair; studio design, microphone design, studio management, vintage recording techniques, mixing, recording and production.

Logical circuit design, integrated circuits and digital functions, data representation, register transfer operations and microprogramming, basic computer organization, the central processor, and arithmetic operations.
