Updates

The fall semester continues to be a time for professional growth and reflection. MAT Professional Year interns are learning the components of effective instruction and have finished their first “Intensive Teaching Experience” (three consecutive days teaching the same subject to the same group of students). MAT faculty have observed the interns’ progress and share their excitement of this first successful teaching experience. Having completed the “Intensive Teaching Experience,” interns can now document that they were successful in planning and implementing classroom instruction. As a result of their teaching, students learned. Congratulations to our interns and faculty! MAT students who are not yet in the Professional Year are having the opportunity to discover that classroom observations can be important learning experiences. We hope everyone gains valuable insight through their classroom visits to a Professional Development School this semester. As we turn our attention toward the spring 2017 semester, we wish our Professional Year interns all the best as they begin their capstone teaching experience. For those students who are not yet in the Professional Year, there is a very important question you need to consider: Are you planning to begin your Professional Year in fall 2017 in order to graduate spring 2018? If so, we have planned an Orientation to the Fall 2017 - Spring 2018 Professional Year which will be held in January. Further details on this event are included in this newsletter. Best wishes for the successful completion of your fall semester!

Alumni In what has become a Cluster Two tradition, recent grads shared their experiences this past spring with the interns who would graduate in 2016. It was tremendously helpful to interns about to begin their new careers to hear from effective new teachers about applications, interviewing tips, what to prepare for and to expect in the first year of teaching. These alumni shared how well prepared they had found themselves to be as MAT grads and how happy they were for having made this so-important career move. Their former supervisor shared, and is still sharing, how extremely proud she is to have worked with these excellent new professionals!

Secondary Education Anne Arundel County Interns Within Tiger Teacher Peer Response Groups we practice cooperative-learning strategies in the Anne Arundel MAT SCED Seminars so that interns are comfortable replicating cooperative learning best practices in their own classrooms. Below is a picture of the Tiger Teacher Think Tank. Using inductive-thinking and group practices builds interns' capacity in the use and application of higher level thinking skills in their own classrooms. This is a common practice in the Anne Arundel County MAT SCED Seminar!

Early Childhood & Elementary Education Howard County Interns Our MAT interns were very excited for Howard County Public Schools to open the doors for their students on Monday, August 29th. Prior to the opening of school, interns worked intensely with their mentors setting up classrooms to provide students with an engaging learning environment. The mentors have been impressed by the interns’ commitment, willingness to lend a hand with a variety of tasks, and their eagerness to do what is best for students.

The interns are active participants at Centennial Lane Elementary, Patuxent Valley Middle and Triadelphia Ridge Elementary schools. Interns at Centennial Lane Elementary School include: Chelsea Adams, Brittany Aebersold, Caitlin Flynn, and Laura Tucker; Patuxent Valley Middle School: Christopher Yeh; Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School: Rachael Bensley, Katherine Bezold, Lauren Dlugonski, Patrick Dunn, Chelsea Feeney, and Christopher Kiggs. During this short period, interns have already participated in Howard County Public School’s Orientation for Interns, professional developments, grade level meetings, and faculty meetings. Some interns were able to participate in Open House and Back to School Night events for parents at their schools. The interns have also successfully participated in an Intensive Teaching Experience which was a tremendous learning curve. It is evident that Custer One interns are off to a good start to become great teachers. Edith W. Howard ECED/ELED PDS Supervisor/Coordinator: Howard County

Early Childhood & Elementary Education Anne Arundel County Interns The first day of school is always exciting - for students AND teachers! And it is well worth memorializing for these new interns setting out on such an important new career journey. Welcome and the best of luck to these Cluster Two/AACPS interns.
