In today’s world, if you see it on the internet, it must be so. That’s what we hear often. Google it. YouTube it. If you can’t find it, him or her, it/he/she doesn’t exist. But there is much that does not, in fact I suggest cannot, exist in the virtual world: God, love, life, imagination. For imagination to run freely, we need to close our eyes from reality. In order to truly love, we need personal contact, for love is not proved in the words that we say but in our actions towards one another. In order for life to exist, we have to live.. Google and Facebook have recently introduced the 360 degree video, which allows you

It's that wonderful time of the year when Christmas and Chanukah light the hearts of young and old alike. The spirit of this wonderful season represents all that is good in the heart of man. The ancient message of "Let there be Light" is all around us during the holiday season. It is evident as we light the first of the Advent candles and the Menorah and in all the tree lighting ceremonies in big cities and small villages alike. As a child growing up in Germany, the Christmas tree was not lit until Christmas eve when my parents ceremoniously lit each real candle on the freshly cut tree to wel-

Inge and I are very happy to send our warmest greetings and best wishes to all those who are celebrating Christmas. We join with the entire board in recognizing the sense of renewed hope and comfort this joyous season brings to our Families, Lodges and entire District. The Nativity story of twenty centuries ago is a hymn to the brotherhood of man. For Christians, it is the fulfillment of age-old prophecies and the reaffirmation of the Great Architect of the Universe’s love for all of us. On

Christmas is the festive time of year when strangers smile at each other, hold a door for you, or allow you to safely cross in front of their vehicle. There is always a pleasant friendliness found in people at this time of year. Barbara and I are looking forward to another holiday season attending lodge and district parties, renewing old friendships and beginning new. We are quickly approaching the end of our two year term in service to the Grand Lodge of New York and the 9th Manhattan District. This experience has been enlightening to us both. The invitations Barbara and I have

Messina from 1 received to attend public meetings, and honor nights during the last year have given us the opportunity to visit with our district family and make new friendships. As we conclude our Thanksgiving festivities in anticipation of Christmas celebrations, we find ourselves living in different surroundings this year. The chaotic yet peaceful surroundings of New York City have changed. We now share our city streets with armed military troops, police officers in protective clothing, many with K-9 dogs by their side. The re-

siliency of the citizens of the United States of America is being tested as we travel to and from work, and participate in our normal daily activities. The challenges we face are making our citizens strong, and our nation stronger. We cannot allow others to dictate how we live our lives. Recent concerns threatened the cancellation of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and yet, the parade went forward, enjoyed this year by a record number of attendees. Our city was never stronger than in the weeks and months, and years following Sep-

tember 11, 2001. Fear did not exist after 911, only the need to help and support existed. We must acknowledge that we live in a tense world, requiring increased vigilance, not fear. We have endured many dark periods in the history of our city, this is just one more for us to stand up to, and look it square in the eye. The radical groups responsible for these atrocities are only successful if they can lower our expectation in our government’s ability to protect us. The United States of America has the best military in the entire world to pro-

Celestino from 1 to peruse any angle or any part of a recorded video, not just from a single point of view. When watching a 360 degree video of a smart phone for example, a viewer can move the phone to see who is standing to the left, what’s on the right, up or down, and thus be able to see the game as if one were actually in the stadium as a spectator. In the works as well, are virtual reality viewing gadgets that, from a visual perspective, places the user (let’s say someone playing a video game) within the virtual digitized world. It is, effectively, the beginnings of holographic environment akin to Gene Rodenberry’s Star Trek. Immersive experi-

ence. That’s what the technology companies say is the goal. In other words, the aim is to make the experience as real as possible. The danger is not so much in what the tools can do, but in not appreciating and understanding its limitations. So goes the same for people: the danger is not in what we know but in appreciating that there is much to learn. And no virtual reality avatar or realistic digitized experience of being in a stadium will ever replace actually being in one Each new discovery and invention occurs when the inventor or discoverer comes upon something that no one has ever seen. In most cases, against conventional wisdom, they pursue

a thought or idea. They imagine something existing before any proof could ever be presented. In some cases, it becomes a lifelong undertaking to verify, create or reconstruct. Sometimes they are merely initiators. Another will come decades later, long before the original thinker has died, to prove its truth or existence. Arrogance in the absoluteness of what we know, you see, is not a quality of a great thinker and, in most cases, a good human being. My grandson, Dieter III, still believes in Santa Claus at the age of 10. A few years ago, he accompanied my daughter to her workplace while he was on Christmas break from school. On that

day, he met the 10year old son of one of her co-workers. She heard from his mother that this boy was a Chess champion, travelling all over the U.S. to compete, that he had won many tournaments, and had already been earning cash prizes. At the time seven years old, Dieter spent most of the afternoon playing with the co-worker’s son. He had befriended many of her co-workers’ children in the last few years whenever he is on school break, and usually would go home cheerful and exhausted. However, this time he was exhausted and upset. Almost dozing off while seated at the back seat of the car on the way home, he told his mother that

the little chess prodigy told him that there was no Santa Claus and that the internet says so. When asked how he responded, my grandson told his mother that he asked the boy if his parents ever told him not to believe everything he saw on the internet. I was very proud of him and told him so, after he innocently asked me if this was the right thing to say. There is wisdom in innocence. The self-proclaimed “intelligent, enlightened and practical” are unlikely applicants in Freemasonry. They exist in vacuum of their own world. They are unyielding to other’s ideas and apathetic to other’s needs. They only believe in the world that they

know and that they see. In their minds, their experience is absolute truth, thus they dismiss the notion that any other perspective may be truer or as true. The wonder of the holiday season is that once a year, throughout the earth, we contemplate a world that doesn’t exist and is not seen–--a world of peace and hope, of love. However briefly, we focus on the ideals that seem improbable and perhaps even impractical. Businesses and employees take time off to celebrate. Feasts are prepared. Financially and nutritionally, these are probably not practical activities; but the belief in something

Unfried from 1 Christmas we celebrate the birth of Christ with prayer, feasting, and great merriment. But most of all we experience it in our hearts. For more than just a single day on the calendar Christmas is a state of mind. It is found throughout the year whenever faith overcomes doubt,

hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. It is present when men of any creed bring love and understanding to the hearts of their fellow brothers and sisters. The feeling is seen in the wondrous faces of children and in the hopeful eyes of the aged. It overflows

the hearts of cheerful givers and the souls of the caring. And it is reflected in the brilliant colors, joyful sounds, and beauty of the winter season. Let us resolve to honor this spirit of Christmas and strive to keep it throughout the year. Inge and I ask you to join us in a

prayer that wisdom, understanding and teamwork might descend on the members and families of the Noble 9th so that during the year ahead we may realize an ancient and wondrous dream: "peace on earth, goodwill toward men."

Celestino from 3 greater than ourselves, binds us. On September 21, 1897, the New York Sun printed an editor’s response to a little girl named Virginia who wrote to him asking if there is a Santa Claus. The eight-year old’s friends were convincing her that he didn’t exist, and all her

poor parents could offer was “If you see it in The Sun, then it’s so.” The full text of The Sun’s response is worth reading and re-reading, but here is a paragraph that lingers with me. “You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but

there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and

abiding.” Which reminds me of an anecdote told to us young students in our Religion class. There was an atheist professor who overheard one of his students praying to God for help in passing an exam. The professor told the student not to waste his time because God does not exist. As a support to his argument, he asked the student if

he has seen God, to which the student replied in the negative. So the professor triumphantly declared 'if you don't see God, then God does not exist.' After completing the exam, the student went to the professor and asked if he could pose a question. The professor told him to go ahead so the student asked,” Sir, have you ever seen your brain?” The professor without thinking answered, “Of course not!” The student smiled, turned around and left. Working towards this idyllic, imaginary world on each ordinary day is the mission of Freemasonry. To bring about a sense of community, to offer help to members of our districts and beyond, to alleviate the suffering where we can, to offer comfort to those in need. These go against the coldness of self-preservation. They may be perceived as often impractical and problematic. However, each time we succeed in any of these endeavors through our own individual and organizational resolve, we broaden

our view of what can be accomplished, what is probable and what is practical. The world we live in becomes bigger and better. What was once unseen is seen, and what was once imagined has become more real. It appears that it isn’t as important to see in order to believe, but rather to believe in order to see. Since this may be the last time I will address all of you as the end of my term as GLSO is fast approaching, allow me to express my thanks and gratitude to those who supported and encouraged me and the DDGM during our travels in the District and elsewhere we are needed to represent the 9th Manhattan. I trust that you will continue your support for the rest of our term as Representatives of our District. May the Great Architect Of The Universe bless all of us and our loved ones and keep all of us safe from harm. Frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes Neues Jahr! are made brighter as we walk and drive past homes and businesses decorated with brightly lit decorations and colored lights. The message of the Season always shines forth as hope, peace on earth - good will toward man, love and charity to all. Our Masonic Park in Tappan is quiet now, much of it still covered with the colors of autumn and perhaps soon to be covered in a blanket of snow and the booths boarded up for the winter and standing silent. But, if you should drive past the now closed gates one cold December night, you will see a stately evergreen adorned with the bright lights of Christmas. Amid the quiet, the

work of The Noble Ninth continues. There are repairs to be made, bills to be paid, preparations made for next year's opening and continued efforts and focus on future development and direction for the Park. On behalf of my fellow Trustees of The Noble Ninth, Inc. I thank you for your interest and support of the ongoing activities in Tappan and also for your support in its future development. Our Board members and their wives join Ruth and me in wishing you all a joyous and blessed holiday season and every good wish for a bright New Year filled with good health and prosperity.
