MARTA SERVICE CHANGES SOON TO TAKE EFFECT Service modifications approved by MARTA’s board of directors will take effect as scheduled on August 15, 2009. The service adjustments represent one of the largest service modifications ever implemented by the authority and include total elimination of bus routes 23 and 182 due to non-productivity; adjustments to more than 40 additional bus routes as well as implementation of a minor increase in headway for rail service. Headway is the amount of time customers have to wait between trains. MARTA staff identified affected bus routes by using a detailed analysis process based on productivity and accessibility. The service modifications are one of several measures MARTA is implementing to address an extremely challenging financial period. MARTA began reaching out to the public and its stakeholders last December informing them of an historic multi-year budget deficit the authority faces in wake of the 2008 economic downturn. Throughout the budget development process, MARTA held community meetings to keep the public informed of the possibility of having to implement drastic measures, including service cuts, to balance the FY 2010 budget. That possibility became a reality after the Georgia General Assembly failed to approve legislative and/or financial assistance to the authority during the 2009 legislative session. MARTA avoided having to make more widespread service cuts by implementing significant internal cost containment measures, raising fares and long-term parking fees, and utilizing one-time funding made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act [ARRA]. MARTA officials, however, continue to stress the dire need for the authority to identify and secure additional sources of reliable, long-term funding to avert the threat of more severe service changes in the future. A 25-cent fare increase and a $1.00 hike in MARTA’s long-term parking rate will take effect on October 1. A complete listing of all service changes and fare and parking rate increases are posted on the MARTA website at www.itsmarta.com. For additional information, customers can call MARTA’s Customer Service Department at 404.848.5000.
