MARRAKECH AND THE VALLEY OF THE ROSES

Introduction This charming week of walking follows footpaths and ancient trade routes across the land of the Damascena rose a region of timeless villages in Morocco's High Atlas. During the holiday we’ll meet rose farmers and discover an unchanged landscape in a remote region of Morocco. Renowned for their fine fragrance, the beautiful Damascena rose is known the world over for its use in rose water and perfumes. From Marrakech we take a panoramic drive over the spectacular Tizi n' Tichka Pass before arriving in the ‘Valley of the Roses.' In modern day Morocoo, this hidden region has become the centre for the country's valuable and sacred rose-oil industry and gives a genuine insight into Berber culture. This charming centre-based walking week takes us through groves of walnut trees and dates palms as we hike through beautiful valley all the time surrounded by peaks of the High Atlas. Each day we'll enjoy an easy walk in a contrasting area before returning to our family-run gite in the afternoon. At the end of our walking adventure we'll return to magical Marrakech and head out in the evening as the city comes to life. If you’re looking for a centre-based cultural walking holiday and an opportunity to get up close to the Berbers, plus time to explore Marrakech, then this relaxed walking week is the perfect choice!

Award winning tour operator for holidays in North Africa

In November 2016, KE won a British Travel Award for ‘Best Holiday Company to North Africa’. We have been operating in Morocco for many years and this is country close to our hearts. The majority of KE staff have travelled to this fascinating country, meaning we are true Moroccan experts.

Is this holiday for you? The maximum altitude attained on this trek is not high (2260m). This means that no-one should have any difficulty with acclimatisation to the altitude. However, the trek does involve a fair amount of ascent and descent and most days are approximately 5 to 6 hours walking. At the time of our visit, the weather is ideal for trekking, not too hot. For most of the route, we are following well-established routes between valleys and villages which are suitable for mules and very straightforward for walkers.

Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Marrakech. Complimentary transfers from Marrakech Airport are provided. On arrival in Marrakech you will be met by a KE representative who will assist with the short transfer to the group hotel. Depending on your flight arrival time and after settling in you may wish to explore. Marrakech is a colourful city and despite most people thinking the souk is a labyrinth, the centre is extremely easy to get around. Most people head for the central square of the Djemaa-el-Fna beneath the beautiful tower of the Koutoubia Mosque. KE Land Only package services begin with the evening meal.

Day 2: Panoramic transfer to the Kasbah town of Ouarzazate and our gite accommodation in the village of Boutaghar. Today we leave the magic of Marrakech and drive towards the Valley of the Roses. Our journey takes us through a rich variety of contrasting scenery and we'll enjoy panoramic views, especially from the Tizi n'Tichka Pass before continuing to the spectacular town of Ouarzazate 'Door of the Desert.' Formerly a French foreign legion post in the 1920's, this amazing Kasbah garrison town has attracted film directors for decades, due to its amazing location and quirkiness. Iconic movies from Lawrence of Arabia, Jewel of the Nile, Kingdom of Heaven, Prince of Persia and even Gladiator were filmed here! After exploring and stretching our legs we'll head eastwards towards our family run

gite accommodation in Tamaloutet and our base for the next five nights. With an excellent location and built in Berber style, this family ruin gite offers excellent views of the mountains plus a lovely terrace to relax on. After checking in, there will be time to freshen up before meeting up for dinner.

Day 3: Hike through the Valley of the Roses before ascending to terraces for colourful views. Once we've enjoyed breakfast, we have the added bonus of walking directly from our accommodation as we follow mule trails into the 'Valley of the Roses." During March, April and May mountain gardens become lush areas carpeted with the Damascena rose. Introduced by the pilgrims of Damascus, roses have become a valuable flower, with the petals used in the production of Morocco's famous rose oil. Depending on the seasons weather the roses may either be budding, in full bloom or if we are lucky, we may be able to see the rose harvest at the celebrations of the 'Rose Festival' (the date of the harvest varies from year to year depending on when the roses are blooming due to weather patterns). To appreciate this florally wonderful spectacular, we ascend a little further onto verdant terraces and reach a spectacular vantage point looking back across the valley. Walking onwards through timeless villages in this hidden corner of the Atlas we arrive at our family run accommodation in the afternoon, just in time to enjoy traditional Moroccan tea.

Day 4: Walk through traditional villages and farms for panoramic views of Mount Mgoun. Today's walk crosses the trails of nomadic tribes as we pass through the Berber groves of El-Qadi. Life has changed very little in this charming region of Morocco as walnut and almond groves are cultivated by hand. As we continue we may be lucky enough to view the beautiful peak and spectacular ridge of Mount Mgoun (40686m). Due to its amazing position and grandeur, rival tribes would descend from high mountain settlements into the villages below. We can enjoy refreshments at traditional cottages as we learn more of the local life in this fascinating hidden area of Morocco. Depending on our arrival time at the group accommodation, you may prefer to relax and read or head into the village for sunset stroll.

Day 5: Explore trails dotted with juniper and tamarix amongst foothills of the High Atlas. This morning we enjoy a dramatic change of landscape on a longer day of walking. Our ascent takes us from green agricultural terraces up onto the lower slopes of the High Atlas mountain range. During the day there will be plenty of time to pause, take photographs and appreciate the distant rocky pinnacles of Jebel Sahro to the South, whilst to the north we are rewarded with a panorama of the High Atlas. As we continue our gradual climb towards the village of Aguerd Zega our trail is dotted with juniper and tamarix trees. If we lucky we may see herds of goats tended to by nomadic Berber shepherds. The friendly village Aguerd Zega is our resting place for this evening.

Day 6: Experience colourful Moroccan life in the villages of Ait Marou, Meguellouna and Boutaghrar. Descending from the High Atlas we return to traditional Moroccan village life as we head down from the beautifully barren slops of Mgoun. Our walk leads us through the villages of Ait Marou, Meguellouna and Boutaghrar. Depending on the time of year, our descent follows the wadi of Mgoun River and depending on the water levels, we may have to get our feet wet (it is useful to have some sturdy sandals to hand). Returning to the lush valleys the air is filled with floral scents once more, as oleander bushes flourish alongside dates palms and walnut trees. Along the trail we'll find restful spots from which to appreciate the dramatic beauty of the Mgoun gorge. On arrival into Boutaghrar, we may get shown the process of rose oil production. To round off this superb week of walking we enjoy a traditional Berber dinner for our final night in the mountains.

Breakfasts are continental style, with tea and coffee, orange juice, cereals including muesli, bread, jam, honey and cheese. Lunch usually starts with the Berber specialty of mint tea, followed by a buffet of rice, pasta or cous cous, with a freshly prepared salad - onion, tomatoes, green peppers, grated carrot, green beans, with tinned sweetcorn or peas added. Hard and soft cheeses, tinned fish, olives, biscuits and bread are also on the lunchtime menu. Dinner starts off with soup and bread. The main course is usually rice, pasta, cous-cous, spaghetti or chips, with a vegetable stew (tagine). There will be some meat (usually chicken, lamb or beef). However, meat is not prominent in the menu. All dishes come with traditional sauces which are rarely (spicy) hot. Desserts usually consist of fruit, including tinned fruit. To round off dinner, there is the usual range of hot drinks.

Joining Arrangements & Transfers All clients arriving on day 1 and departing on day 8 will be provided with an airport transfer free of charge. You MUST provide your full flight details and should let us know if you do NOT wish to have an airport transfer . Clients intending to make their own transfer arrangements at Marrakech Airport should note that taxis are available outside the arrivals hall at all times. They are equipped with meters but most taxi drivers are reluctant to use them and you should either insist on a meter or agree the fare before setting off. The standard fare to the city in a "petit taxi" should be no more than £6 though you may have to pay a little more if arriving late at night. The airport is approximately 4 miles from the city and the journey takes 10 - 15 minutes.

Accommodation During this trip the group will spend 2 nights in a tourist class hotel Marrakech. While there are many more expensive hotels in Marrakech, we try to strike the right balance of a comfortable and conveniently located hotel while maintaining a really good value holiday. In the Valley of the Roses there are 5 nights in a family run gite to give a real cultural and traditional experience. All accommodation is based on twin sharing and en-suite. If you are travelling by yourself you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single rooms are available for a supplementary cost. Additional nights in Marrakech are available either at the group hotel or in a range of different hotels and riads. For extra hotel nights and single supplement costs please contact the KE office.

Group Leader & Support Staff The group will be led by an experienced professional English-speaking Moroccan guide.

Spending Money Approximately £130 (or equivalent in US dollars or Euros) should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses including approximately £30-£40 tips for your trek crew. This should also be sufficient to cover soft drinks and snacks. Marrakech is a great place for souvenir buying and all major credit cards are accepted. If you are intending to buy expensive items, you should budget accordingly. It is not necessary to purchase Moroccan currency (Dirham) outside the country. You can withdraw money in local currency from ATM’s in the arrivals hall of the airport or in Marrakech itself, or your travel money can be carried in the form of cash. Sterling, Euros and US dollars are easily exchanged. Credit cards can be used to purchase goods and it is a good idea to carry one in case of emergency.

Guidance On Tipping Tips are the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your local guides and porters. They do not form part of their wages and any tips they receive are seen as a personal thank you from group members. For our part, we advise local teams that tips are not a duty or a prerequisite but are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that was given. For your trek crew we recommend that you give a tip if you feel that their services have met your satisfaction. We will provide guidelines on how much to tip the local staff along with your joining instructions but it should be remembered that this is your ‘thank-you’ to the crew and the final amount should be decided by the group. We estimate that approximately £30 per group member should provide an appropriate level of tips. However, for the KE leader, we leave the tipping amount totally at your own discretion.

Your baggage on trek will be carried by pack animals. The packed weight of your main bag whilst trekking should be no more than 15 kgs. (33 pounds). It is possible to leave clothes or other items not required on trek at the group hotel.

Free KE Gift When You Book As a way to thank all our clients we offer a Free Gift for every holiday that you book with us. Simply select your Free Gift or choose to make a donation in your My KE account once you have booked your holiday.

* Please note that postage & package costs will be charged for Trek Bags sent outside of the UK. For current costs please view details on Free Gifts.

Altitude This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2000 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at altitude on our website which can be viewed via the link below. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. www.keadventure.com/page/altitude.html

Group Size And Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

Visa Morocco UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa for short stays.

diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro.

Currency The unit of currency in Morocco is the Dhiram.

Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

Preparing For Your Trip It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a trekking holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. For this trip you need to be aerobically fit and also capable for walking for 5 - 7 hours each day for 4 days . We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime building up to departure. Regular walking in hill or back country is the best preparation but if this is not possible, regular exercise with your preferred sport or pastime such as jogging or swimming, will develop better fitness and stamina. Whatever your exercise regime, before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country.

Know Before You Go As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices ‘Know before you go’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas, and we recommend that all KE travellers take a look at the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination on the official FCO website: www.fco.gov.uk. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

Climate The region of the Valley of the Roses is extremely hot in the summer months. However, from late October through to mid April we can expect to find very pleasant temperatures for trekking. Daytime temperatures will be around 20 to 25°C, dropping close to freezing point at night at our highest camps. This part of the world receives very little rainfall and we can anticipate fine weather. However, weather in mountainous areas is notoriously difficult to predict, and rain or even short-lived storms can occur.
