MARKET CLOSING Indian equity markets registered a solid rally triggered by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) impressive show in the recently held assembly elections in five states. Investors cheered the spectacular show by BJP in Uttar Pradesh, a politically crucial state. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, jumped 496.40 points or 1.71% to settle at 29,442.63. The Nifty 50 index surged 152.45 points or 1.71% to settle at 9,087. Data showing a recovery in industrial production in January also boosted sentiment. Key indices remained firm throughout the session after witnessing a gap-up opening. The Nifty settled above the psychological 9,000 mark after hitting record high above that mark in early trade. The Sensex also closed above the psychological 29,000 level after regaining that mark at the start of the session. The election results could provide a much needed boost to the ruling BJP at the centre to accelerate the pace of reforms, including the rollout of the crucial Goods and Services Tax (GST), slated to be implemented from 1 July 2017.Bank stocks rose. Capital goods stocks gained in firm market. Realty stocks also advanced.

MARKET TODAY’S VIEW Nifty50 futures on the Singapore Stock Exchange were trading 17.50 points higher at 9118.50, indicating a positive opening for the domestic market. “The equity market’s price-to-earnings ratio can get re-rated and expand more than its long-term average. The Modi magic has catapulted India to the second-best performing market globally in the past three months. The Sensex has outperformed markets like Dow, FTSE and Dax, except for the Brazilian Bovespa. The Indian market will ride on this hope and is on track to be among top three markets by returns in 2017. The US Federal Reserve, which has struggled to stoke inflation since the financial crisis and up until now raised rates less frequently than it and markets expected, may be about to hit the accelerator on rate hikes. On Wednesday, the US central bank is almost universally expected to raise its benchmark interest rates; a move that just a few weeks ago was viewed by the markets as unlikely.

SECTORAL INDICES:

NIFTY SHORT TERM OUTLOOK: The Nifty witnessed a sharp move in last session, with the 20DMA acting as a springboard for the benchmark index. Consequently, the multi-week consolidation ultimately broke out on the upside with a breakaway gap in last session. The Nifty crossed the all-time high of 9119 and registered a new all-time high of 9122. Post the gap-up opening, it moved into a consolidation mode. 9060-9000 will act as a key support area. In terms of wave structure, the sideways activity was a fourth wave consolidation and the Nifty has now started the fifth leg of an impulse on the upside. The equality target for this leg comes to 9500, which will be the medium-term target.
