Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation Tekes is the main public funding organisation for research and development (R&D) in Finland. Tekes funds industrial projects as well as projects in research organisations, and especially promotes innovative, risk-intensive projects. Tekes offers partners from abroad a gateway to the key technology players in Finland. Technology programmes – Tekes´ choices for the greatest impact of R&D funding Tekes uses technology programmes to allocate its financing, networking and expert services to areas that are important for business and society. Programmes are launched in areas of application and technology that are in line with the focus areas in Tekes’ strategy. Tekes allocates about half the financing granted to companies, universities and research institutes through technology programmes. Tekes technology programmes have been contributing to changes in the Finnish innovation environment for twenty years.

Executive Summary  ITRON has extensive experience as controllers and subsystems in each products especially in FA/Control devices, OA/Business equipments, and home/information appliances due to the sophisticated design for real-time OS, compactness with less consumption of resources, prioritization of embedded software engineer and open architecture policy. ITRON is expected to expand the market including broadening horizons of the embedded market itself mainly in general industry, FA, control device area, especially where the realtime and compact environment is needed.  On the other hand, embedded Linux seems to become major embedded OS in stationary home appliances, and begins to be build in portable information appliances and MID. The embedded Linux including Android could be the mainstream in embedded OS/middleware in very wide area in line with evolution of network and communications equipments both for consumer and industry due to the efficiency of development and open source policy.  General market trend even in embedded system is toward multi-core, virtualization, and parallel use with multiple OS. Each embedded OS could continue to be utilized in its specialty area.

Embedded System in Japan  Embedded systems are the key in system to control the equipments used in various fields, they were originally developed as embedded systems in order to control the equipments in the traditional aerospace, defense, and other industrial systems. Under this background, there are many embedded systems related developments of RTOS, Linux, tools, and middleware in Europe and the United States. Meanwhile, in the Japanese market, embedded systems have been brought up with growth of the microcomputer and ITRON mainly in control of industrial equipments and vehicles.  In the last 15 years to 20 years, embedded systems used in aerospace, defense and industrial relations have been needed in advanced equipment control in business and civilian areas. Recent rapid improvement of processor performance also accelerates equipping with embedded system in various areas.  Recent well-developing network environment including wireless, equipments and terminals are required to work with the service. Using the services over the Internet in the consumer equipments as well as business systems are expanding as service-type cloud.  Even embedded systems development, it is required to develop embedded equipments intended to be used in cloud-based service as well as in device control. (direction to more application- and solution-oriented as well as element-oriented)

 Embedded OS is divided into ITRON, embedded Linux, RTOS and Windows Embedded  ITRON is a real-time OS based on open source specifications, and software vendors and chip vendors develop and sale each OS based on the free-of-charge specifications. And embedded system users such as home appliance makers begin to adopt ITRON as the basis for their proprietary OS  Embedded Linux is also an OS based on open source. It began to be adopted for embedded systems since the beginning of 21st century. Now, it becomes standard OS in network and appliance products, etc.  RTOS is a real-time OS for conventional industry, aerospace and armaments industry such as VxWorks of Window river and INTEGRITY of GreenHills  Windows Embedded is an embedded OS of Microsoft, used for mainly POS and business terminals. It develops also for car navigation system and mobile terminals  Each OS has built in devices and terminals in each field, and formed the market taking advantage of each feature.  Since 2009, Android, Linux based platform for embedded device by Google has been built in mobile phone and MID.  From now on, Android as a platform for embedded device seems to spread rapidly due to the open source policy and easy development of devices for internet use

Appendix II Survey by T-Engine Forum in 2009 T-Engine Forum conducted the questionnaire survey of use trend of real-time OS in the Embedded System market. The latest survey was done at the Embedded Technology 2009 Conference & Exhibition held at Yokohama, Japan on November 18-20, 2009. The same survey has been conducted every year by the TRON Association since 14 years ago. The survey has been taken over to the T-Engine Forum since 2009. The participants of the Embedded Technology 2009 was 22,117 which include designers, developers and researchers accounting for 72% to the total number of participants in the event.

ITRON based Products ITRON as a real-time OS is the standard in the world, and it is used as different parts in various kind of embedded system. Japan's new paradigm in manufacturing has been developed together with ITRON in a mutually complementary manner. Regarding the denvelopment of product with embedded system, majority of vendors seems to adopt embedded Linux (Android) as a platform of embedded systems in various area, however, ITRON based OS still has superiority in AV equipment, in-vehicle equipment, white goods (home appliance), measurement tool, satellite and so on.
