Purpose of the investigation
A geotechnical investigation for crossing of a pressure sewer at Mariager Fjord, has been carried out for Mariagerfjord Vand A/S in August to September 2015 by COWI A/S. The purpose of the investigation has been to determine geological and geotechnical data in sufficient detail for planning a Horizontal Directional Drillings (HDD).

Project
The project comprises crossing of a sewer pipe between Dania and Vive at Mariager Fjord. It was planned to use a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technique to install the sewer pipe. The depth of the HDD has not been decided yet. The alignment of the HDD is planned with entry point at a location west of the Dania harbour and borehole B15, proceeding north to towards the Vive side of the fjord. The specific location is still uncertain, but with the alignment in this report the length of the HDD is approximately 1200 m. The terrain at the entry and exit point is in approximately elevation +1m and +1.4m.

Field investigation
The geotechnical field investigation included 9 geotechnical borings denoted B1, B3, B4B6, B9, B11, B13 and B15. The boreholes were drilled during the period 13. August – 3. September 2015 by the use of a truck mounted drilling rig, using 6" drilling auger. The execution of three borings, B1, B3 and B15, have been performed onshore, while the remaining boreholes have been performed offshore from Jack-up CGJ Explorer. The geotechnical borings were drilled to depths of 15 – 49 m below ground (m b.g.) or sea level. The positioning and elevation of the boreholes were performed by our technicians using precision GPS. The locations of the boreholes are shown on the Location Plan, Encl. No. 1.10.

During the drilling works, the thickness and depth of all strata were determined. Furthermore, representative samples were extracted from all layers and at intervals not exceeding 0.5m. A total of six undisturbed samples were extracted for determination of soil density. Thinwalled brass sample tubes used have an inner diameter of 42mm and a length of 140mm have been used. In-situ vane shear tests were performed at depth intervals of about 0.5m. In the gyttja vane type V7.5 with a diameter of 75mm and a height of 150mm has been used. In the limestone two vanes were used, type V5 and V4, having a width of 50 and 40mm and height of 100 and 80mm respectively. Piezometer standpipes, consisting of 25mm tubes with slots in the lower 1 m, were installed in the onshore boreholes to allow observation of the ground water level in the boreholes. A bentonite plug were installed above the filter to prevent surface water from influencing the water level in the tube. Monitoring of the water levels were performed on the 15. September 2015. The results of the water level monitoring are also presented in Table 2 in section 6.3. The results of the field investigation including vane tests, stratification and depth of soil samples are shown on the borehole profiles, Encl. Nos. 1.1 – 1.9. A legend for borehole logs is shown on Encl. No. A-1.

Laboratory work
A geological classification of all soil samples in the geotechnical borings has been carried out in the laboratory. The classification has been performed in accordance with the guidelines in the Danish Geotechnical Society's publication "A guide to engineering geological soil description" dated May 1995. The lime content of the soil samples has been qualitatively evaluated by the reaction of the samples to 10 % hydrocloric acid. The natural water content, w, of the soil samples has been determined on all suitable samples, according to DS/CEN ISO/TS 17892-1. The total unit weight of soil was determined on all undisturbed samples. The results of the above classification and laboratory testing are presented on the borehole profiles, Enclosure Nos. 1.1 - 1.9.

Levels and coordinates
All levels refer to the Danish national survey system, “Dansk Vertikal Reference 1990” (DVR90). The grid system used for determining coordinates for the borehole locations is "UTM32 E89". The levels and coordinates at the boreholes are shown on the borehole profiles.

Subsurface and ground water conditions
6.1
General geology
The entire Mariager Fjord is a part of so-called tunnel valleys stretching to Kattegat from Hald outside of Viborg. Around the fjord, embankments of clay till and sand till, raising to a height of up to 100m above sea-level, are encountered. Below the late glacial and glacial deposits, of sand till and clay till, limestone from the Danien period and the older Cretaceous period is encountered. After the glaciers retreated, a deep valley was left behind. In this period the valley was not connected to the sea due to an embankment at the inlet of the fjord. As the glaciers melted in Europe and North America the sea-level rows and at some point approximately 8500 to 7700 years ago the sea broke through the barrier and flooded the valley. After flooding the valley the sea kept raising to approximately 4 m higher than present day. In the fjord large amount of postglacial gyttja was deposited. Studies of the fjord have yet to determine the extent of the postglacial deposits at some points.
6.2
Site conditions
Based on the investigations performed, the stratigraphy and subsurface conditions at the site have been found to be varied. In the onshore boreholes thin layers of recent and postglacial deposits overlay limestone. In the fjord the postglacial gyttja deposits increase in thickness. The encountered limestone is generally known as "skrivekridt" and has a degree of induration of H2. There can be weaker zones of H1, as well as stronger zones of H3. 6.2.1 Onshore boreholes south of the fjord Borehole B15: Under 0.3m top mull, deposits of glacial clay till are found to approximately 0.8m b. g. Hereunder, cretaceous deposits of limestone are found to the bottom of the borehole, 15 m b. g.
6.2.2 Offshore boreholes Borehole B4: The seabed is encountered at elevation -1.8m. Under 2.3 m postglacial gyttja, deposits of glacial muddy to very muddy limestone are found to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -28.8m. Borehole B5: The seabed is encountered at elevation -8.2m. Under 12.5 m postglacial gyttja, deposits of glacial sandy to muddy limestone are found to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -35.2m. Borehole B6: The seabed is encountered at elevation -8.3m. Hereunder postglacial deposits of gyttja to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -49m. Borehole B9: The seabed is encountered at elevation -7.4 m. Hereunder postglacial deposits of gyttja to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -48.8m. Borehole B11: The seabed is encountered at elevation -7.8m. Under 12.5 m postglacial gyttja, deposits of glacial sandy to muddy limestone are found to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -35m. Borehole B13: The seabed is encountered at elevation -2.1 m. Under 1.9 m postglacial sand and gravel, deposits of glacial sandy to muddy limestone are found to the bottom of the borehole, at elevation -34.9m.
6.2.3 Onshore boreholes north of the fjord Borehole B1: Under 1.0 m sand fill, deposits of glacial limestone gyttja are found to the bottom of the borehole, 15 m b. g. Borehole B3: Under 0.6 m topsoil and sand fill, deposits of postglacial gyttja are found to 10.1 m b. g., underlain by cretaceous deposits of limestone to the bottom of the borehole, 20m b. g. In table 1 the measured unit weight, water content and shear vane strength are presented.

The shear vane strength measured in the gyttje is correlated to the undrained shear strength, by a factor "kvinge". kvinge depends on plasticity index, and is usually assumed to equal to 0.5 in gyttja.

The ground water table must be expected to be dependent on the time of year as well as on precipitation.

Execution
Excavations are expected to be performed at boreholes B1 and B15. The expected excavation depth is up to 1.5 m b.g.
7.1
Dewatering of excavation
Excavations are expected to be conducted in limestone to a depth of or slightly below the groundwater. It is therefore expected that dewatering can be limited to the use of regular pumps, pump sumps and drainage ditches. In the limestone there is a risk of waterfilled fissures. Therefore it can be neccesary to dewater by a well point system or dewatering wells, thereby avoiding softening and hydraulic failure of the base. The discharge of pumped up water may - depending on the quantities of pumped water, require permission from the municipal authorities according to Danish law (Vandforsyningslovens § 26).
7.2
Excavations
With the assumption that the soil conditions are similar to those encountered in the boreholes and the dewatering scheme is effective, it is expected that the dewatering of the excavations can be carried out without special problems. Due to the safety of workers, temporary, open pit slopes should not be steeper than 1.0:1.5 (vertical:horizontal). In case of special conditions, like water filled layers of gravel, sand or silt, sudden thaw or loads on top of the slope, the slope should be less inclined to prevent dangerous slippage. Possible loose, soaked or frozen soil shall be excavated before casting of the foundations.

Geotechnical inspections
In connection with the excavation works, geotechnical inspections shall be conducted, as per EC7, part 1, chapter 4. The scope of these inspections will be detailed prior to final design.

Handling of soil
According to the law of handling of soil, "Jordforureningsloven", special requirements can be asked for handling of soil deposited outside the ground area ("matrikel"). Such requirements can have significant influence on the time schedule and the economy of the project, and should therefore be handled as soon as possible, and before the start of the building.

Geotechnical design report
A geotechnical design report, collecting the geotechnical design including basis, parameters, calculations and results, shall be worked out see EC7, part 1, section 2.8. The design report must include a plan for control, monitoring and maintinans. Present geotechnical report can be used as a basis for the design report.

Final remarks
The extracted soil samples will be stored for a period of 3 months from the date of this report. After this period the samples will be disposed of unless other agreement has been made. COWI will be available for further discussion of terms of geotechnical and foundation issue in relation to this project.
