Rotary field staff participated in the February immunization rounds to monitor campaign quality and help reach previously missed children. Together with the partner agencies, they traveled to a number of Local Government Areas (LGAs) and found poor performance was an issue, particularly in the Gusau LGA. They met with LGA chairmen to discuss opportunities for improved quality, better training and monitoring for vaccinators. Despite challenges, it was noted that most local government officials showed increased commitment in ensuring quality and maintaining their polio free status.

Pakistan • A delegation of Canadian Rotarians under the leadership of PDG Bill Gray traveled to Pakistan to participate in polio eradication activities and other humanitarian projects. A Ministerial Conference on Immunization in Africa took place on 24-25 February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. African leaders—including health and finance ministers—came together to demonstrate their commitment to expanding access to vaccines across the continent. The event also brought together advocates, technical experts, policymakers, donors and journalists to examine how best to drive forward immunization across Africa, ensuring every child has access to the vaccines they need. The conference was hosted by the World Health Organization’s Regional Offices for Africa and for the Eastern Mediterranean in conjunction with the African Union, which reflected the breadth of desire across the continent to improve access to immunization. Rotary’s National PolioPlus Committee Chair for Nigeria, Dr. Tunji Funsho, represented Rotary at the conference, participating in a panel on accountability and the legacy of polio eradication. The conference also highlighted the need to ensure that polio legacy plans are in place by the end of 2016 to allow future health programs to benefit from the knowledge and expertise the polio program has generated. At the end of the conference a declaration of support was signed by all of the ministers calling upon the World Health Organization and the African Union Commission “to support member states to share experiences, strengthen capacity, and establish mechanisms for monitoring progress towards the fulfillment of these commitments.”
