This week we continue our new series called “Plant of the week” , where we would like to introduce the learners to some plants on our campus. All these plants are indiginous to Southern Africa.
PLANT OF THE WEEK Commmon name: Sickle bush; Sekelbos Scientific name: Dichrostachys cinerea

Flowers & Fruit:
Adult Sickle Bush Tree with Sean Rocher en Alrené Odendaal Gr 4 D
Interesting Facts: Sickle bush is a nitrogen-fixing legume and therefore has a positive effect on the nitrogen content of the soil. It has the ability to colonize disturbed veld quickly and curbs erosion. The pods are very nutritious to animals and are eaten by stock and game, including monkeys, rhinoceros and bush pigs. The roots are used as a local anesthetic for ailments such as snake bites, scorpion stings and toothache. It also makes high quality firewood. Witten / Compiled by Dr Danie Theunissen.
