MANAGE WEIGHT THE HEALTHY WAY Exercise is good for you in so many ways. It helps you manage your weight by burning calories. It also: ◆◆   Lowers your risk for heart disease, diabetes and other long-term health problems. ◆◆   Makes your lungs and muscles stronger. ◆◆   Helps you sleep better. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise spread out over the week. But the

Is medicine an option? If you have tried to lose weight without success, ask your doctor about weightloss medicine. It won’t make you lose weight on its own. But it can help when added to a diet and exercise plan. Many of these drugs have side effects. So ask your doctor about the risks and benefits. A healthy diet combines fewer calories with more nutrition. You can get both with a diet that: ◆◆   Has mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or nonfat dairy products. ◆◆   Includes lean meats, fish, eggs, beans and nuts. ◆◆   Limits unhealthy fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars. Aim to lose between 1 and 2 pounds per week. It’s a healthy goal and one you can meet. That usually means eating 500 to 1,000 fewer calories each day. Try keeping a record of everything

It may be tempting to try something exotic for fast weight loss. An allkumquat diet, or a one-weekend exercise marathon. But it wouldn’t be healthy. And any weight you lost would likely come back. If you want to lose weight, a longterm healthy plan for eating and exercising is still best. It’s not new or trendy. But it works for most people.

more you exercise, the better. Talk with your doctor if you have questions about how much exercise is right for you.

Breastfeeding your baby: A healthy choice Did you know that the number of mothers choosing to breastfeed has grown steadily in the last 10 years? Breast milk is often called the first food. It’s becoming the top choice of nourishment for newborns and infants everywhere. Why? There are a lot of good health benefits for both the mom and baby. Here are just a few of them.

Breast milk is good for your baby It has all the nutrients your baby needs. ◆◆   It is easy to digest. ◆◆   It helps to protect your baby from many illnesses. ◆◆

Breastfeeding is good for you It helps you recover from giving birth. ◆◆   It saves you money and time. ◆◆   It gives you time to enjoy your baby. If you need help getting started, talk to your doctor. You can also call WIC (Women, Infants and Children) at 888-942-2229. This is a free call. ◆◆

SUCH SWEET SLUMBER: KIDS NEED PLENTY OF SLEEP It helps them learn. It helps them grow. Kids need sleep just as much as they need nutritious food and plenty of love. What’s more, kids who get enough sleep are more alert and have fewer behavior problems than kids who don’t. How much sleep kids need changes over time. Here are some things to keep in mind as you help your child rest well.

Babies sleep the most Newborns up to 3 months may wake up a lot, but over a full day, they should sleep 14 to 17 hours. Infants 4 to 11 months need slightly less sleep than newborns—about 12 to 15 hours.

A calming nighttime ritual Toddlers ages 1 to 2 years should sleep about 11 to 14 hours. Preschoolers ages 3 to 5 years need about 10 to 13 hours.

To soothe them to sleep: ◆◆   Let your child sleep with a favorite blanket or stuffed animal. ◆◆   Read stories or listen to soft music together at bedtime. ◆◆   Keep the bedroom quiet and dark.

Help them succeed School-age children ages 6 to 13 need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep a day.

To minimize distractions: Don’t allow drinks with caffeine in the evening. ◆◆   Keep TVs and computers out of the sleeping space. Kids of all ages need a consistent bedtime routine. Starting good habits early can help your child sleep well for a lifetime. ◆◆

To help your little one sleep soundly: Put your baby in the crib when you first notice signs of sleepiness. It’ll help him or her learn to fall asleep alone. ◆◆   Lay your baby on his or her back to avoid sudden infant death syndrome. ◆◆

YOUR FLU SHOT COULD SAVE A LIFE The flu shot is the best protection from the flu—for you and the people around you. Why is it so important to get your flu shot? You may have less sick time. The shot isn’t perfect. You might still get the flu. But you’re likely to be less sick— and for a shorter time—than if you didn’t get a shot. It helps you avoid getting even sicker. The shot can help you avoid

illnesses that often travel with the flu. One of these is pneumonia. It can be deadly. It’s safe. Some people believe the vaccine causes the flu. But it can’t. You will help keep others well. Some people say, “I never get the flu.” In fact, they might be getting the flu but not be sick enough to know they have it. And they can still spread the flu, which leads to one of the best reasons to get the shot: The more people who get the shot, the fewer people who get sick.

Where can you get a flu shot? To find out, please call Member Services. It can save lives. About 36,000 people die every year from the flu and the illnesses it can cause. So getting a shot gives you a shot at saving lives.

Who needs it? Everyone 6 months and older should get a shot as soon as the vaccine arrives in your area. That’s often in the fall, but flu season lasts for months. A winter shot is OK too. Sources: American Lung Association; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Incluya carnes magras, pescado, huevos, frijoles y nueces.

Fuentes: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; National Institutes of Health

DULCES SUEÑOS: LOS NIÑOS NECESITAN DORMIR BASTANTE Los ayuda a aprender.
