DREAMYISLANDS Before 1972, when the first island resort was developed, no one really thought about holidaying in the Maldives. Forty years on and how things have changed. Now there are close to one hundred resorts and each and every one is a private haven synonymous with indulgent holidays. Few places can match what the Maldives offer with its private island luxury resorts, powder-white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and crystal-clear azure waters. These islands are a dreamy holiday paradise where you can laze under the sun, swim, fish, view spectacular coral reefs, dine on a sand bar, go cruising or happily surrender to the pleasures of doing nothing at all. If this is your idea of paradise then you have discovered the Maldives! And although this is the place to zone out and forget all those worries and cares back home there are a few facts you need to know before you zip off to your Maldivian Escape! Location Scattered across the equator, like diamonds sprinkled onto a bed of sapphires and aquamarines, the Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean. Located 480 kilometres southwest from the tip of India and 725 kilometres west of Sri Lanka, the Maldives stretches 820 kilometres from north to south and is 130 kilometres at its widest point. With only 1% land and 99% ocean, the Maldives consists of 1,192 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls. Each atoll has been created from coral formations which enclose a lagoon, and over a hundred of these atolls are home to resorts.

A unique geographical design gives the Maldives its mesmerising dreamlike appearance and with each and every resort on their own individual island, it truly is an island paradise!

DREAMY ISLANDS

Passport & Visa Australian passport holders only require a passport valid for more than six months from the date of arrival with at least one blank page for the entry visa and a valid return or onward airline ticket. The tourist visa will be issued on arrival at no cost. Getting There Singapore Airlines flies daily from all major cities in Australia to Singapore with double daily connections to Malé and flying time is approximately 12 hours depending on the city of your departure. Getting to your Resort Ibrahim Nasir International Airpor t Malé is located on Hulhule Island. The type of transfer you will take to your resort will depend on its location. On arrival at Malé airpor t you will be met outside the Arrival’s Hall by your resor t representative, who will escor t you to the resor t speedboat for your transfer. If your resor t requires you to travel by seaplane you will be advised of the departure time and escor ted to the exclusive resor t lounge to wait for your

scenic flight. And if the domestic flight option is the way to reach your resort, you will be met by your resort representative and escorted to the airport lounge for your transfer by domestic flight to the local airport and continue by speedboat to your resort. Language Dhivehi is the official language, however English is spoken at all resorts and on Malé. Currency The Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency. Money can be changed at an authorised dealer at the airport, at a bank on Malé or at your resort. ATMs are located at the airport or on Malé. Your resort accepts US dollars and major credit cards. Climate The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year round and a great amount of sunshine. The hottest month on average is April and the coolest

is December. The weather is determined largely by monsoons, with a significant variation in the monthly rainfall levels. February is the driest with January to April being relatively dry. May to October records the highest average monthly rainfall and with the south-west monsoon (hulhango) from May to September is the wet season causing some rough seas and strong winds. The northeast monsoon (iruvai) falls between December to April and brings periods of clear skies, lower humidity and a little rain. Local Customs As a Muslim country, the one custom that Australians should take note of is, that while all resorts serve alcohol, guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol into the Maldives even for personal consumption. And if taking a local village tour, be mindful of not wearing clothing that is too revealing.

DAYDREAMBELIEVER

L

ooking out across the crystalline waters of the Indian Ocean, soaking up the sun on a salt-white beach, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’re daydreaming. But the pinch-yourself reality is that you’re in the Maldives – an almost mythical romantic escape which tops the wish list of millions of starry-eyed couples each year. This unique constellation of almost 1,200 islands, grouped around 26 alluring atolls, showcases balmy lagoons encircled by protective coral reefs and the kind of beyond-stars accommodation which everyone deserves to experience at least once in a lifetime. The international airport is located on the island of Hulhule, so you can bypass the capital Malé and head straight on to an A-lister arrival via scenic seaplane, domestic flight or speedboat to your luxurious hideaway. The ‘one island-one resort’ concept is taken to spectacular new heights in the Maldives with over 100 islands home to their own private resorts and spas. A beachfront villa can become your very own secluded love nest, or an iconic overwater bungalow the dreamy setting for your leave-the-world-behind escape. With dazzling water views, direct ocean access and indulgent extras like personal butlers and world class dining these holiday havens are a true indulgence.

Sipping a tropical cocktail and relaxing under the palm trees in a land of never-ending summer and sugar-white sand, you’ll find the cares of the world gently spirited away in the tropical breeze. Still got a little stress to shake? Spoil yourselves with a blissful couple’s spa session in a lush garden setting or listening to the waves lapping onto a wooden jetty overlooking the ocean. Soak up the Maldives special virgin coconut oil or ask for a Maldivian sand massage - a local cure for muscle and joint pains. Indulgence giving you an appetite? Feast on a mouthwatering choice of local and international cuisine at your resort’s restaurants, dine on the beach with the sand between your toes or in the privacy of your suite, or take a chartered boat to your own secluded sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean for a Champagne lunch or romantic candlelit dinner as the sun dips into the turquoise horizon. Want to test the fabled waters? In a place where there is more sea than land, there is a plethora of activities you can enjoy in or under the ocean. With its magnificent variety of sea life, the Maldives are rightly famous for snorkelling and diving and the transparent and wonderfully warm (usually an inviting 25°C) waters are host to over 1000 species of fish and many other delightful sea creatures. With countless coral reefs featuring all the colours of the rainbow, all you need to do is travel 15 to 60 minutes by boat to explore a different dive spot every day. Whether you are an experienced diver or not, the Maldives allows everyone to marvel at the underwater wonderland,

offering basic to advanced diver training and drift dives with the guidance of experienced instructors for you to take in all the beauty of the sea. Explore the islands on a catamaran, jet-ski or your own private chartered dhoni, a traditional Maldivian boat. Or take a leisurely paddle around your resort island in a kayak. Hanifaru Bay, known locally as Vadnhumaafaru Adi, lies within the Baa Atoll and is one of the few places on earth where the gentle whale sharks gather to mate, and also home to over 100 graceful manta rays. Fishing forms the backbone of Maldivian life and night fishing is another popular excursion offered by most resorts. Surfing enthusiasts were some of the first to discover this idyllic destination and thousands tote their boards to the Maldives every year to ride the famous breaks and three to eight foot swells from June to September. The most wellknown surfing hotspots are on the north and south of Malé Island. And if you’re not quite up to riding the waves, there are always tempting new diversions under the sea, including a recently opened underwater restaurant, music club and spa. The Maldives are enchanting in their own right but it is how you spend the time together that makes this place truly special. These unique islands don’t have to be only a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as you can relive and recreate your ultimate romantic getaway time and time again, every time you return to the magical islands of the Maldives.

Situated on seven and a half hectares of previously undeveloped land at the southern end of the island, there are spectacular views at each of the nine-hole, mostly par-three course. The golf course was developed with the islands natural beauty in mind, enhancing existing flora to showcase the gleaming ocean and turquoise lagoon.
