Making the most from YouTube The document 8330 YouTube – the Basics covers an introduction to the video sharing and viewing website. This document covers the advantages of a free Google Account when using YouTube (see 8320 Create and use a free Google Account). If you’re already signed in to your Google Account, the panel on the left of the YouTube home screen will look different to what it would be if you weren’t signed in.

When signed in Subscriptions and manage subscriptions are shown

When not signed in the Sign in button is shown

Browsing Channels A YouTube channel is the home page for a YouTube account. It shows the account name, the account type, the public videos the channel owner has uploaded, and any user information. As a Google Account holder, you too can create your own YouTube channel (see below). On the left of YouTube home screen is a Browse channels button. Click this and a range of channels headings will display.

Making the most from YouTube The first in the range is the Best of YouTube followed by Paid Channels (unlikely that there’s anything in this section worth paying money for: 99.99% of YouTube videos are free). Scrolling down the channel list there are sections covering music, comedy, film and entertainment, beauty and fashion, sports and many others. Each shows the number of channels within that category. An example - the Waitrose Channel As an example the section on Cooking and Health has a wide range of channels including some household names and supermarket groups. Here is the entry for Waitrose:

It gives a brief description of the types of video that you will find on this channel. Clicking the logo or name of the channel will take you to that channel’s home page. Click the Videos tab to list all the videos that have been uploaded by that channel.

Against each video, there is information about how long ago it was uploaded and the number of views it has had. Click the About tab to read more about the channel and see how many subscribers and video views.

It also shows when the channel was created. There is also a Discussion tab where people can exchange opinions about the channel.

Making the most from YouTube With the larger channels the videos can be placed in groups. In the case of Waitrose, Health Eating, Baking and the Delia Online Cookery School are examples of these sections. Below is shown the Delia section with all the videos contained within this section.

Note that all this can be browsed and viewed without a Google Account. However, with an account you can subscribe to as many channels as you wish.

Subscribe to a channel At various points of a channel there is a Subscribe button showing the current number of subscribers. The number of subscribers can vary from zero (many people create a channel but do nothing with it) to millions. The exact number of susbcibers can be seen on the About tab of the channel’s home page. The UK Disney Channel has over a million subscribers and the videos within it have has nearly 750 million views since it was created in 2007. With a Google Account clicking the Subscribe button will add this to your subscriptions section on the left of the YouTube main page. The benefit of subscribing is that as new videos are uploaded (Waitrose usually makes a new one available weekly) you can have instant access to them.

Creating your own Channel Anyone who has a Google Account can create their own channel. The videos you upload to your own Channel can be kept personal to share amongst family and friends. Here are a few reasons why you may consider your own YouTube Channel: 1. Creating a collection of videos from family gatherings, parties, barbeques, Christmas and other holidays (shared among family members) 2. A YouTube Channel for your organisation (bowls club, gardening club, U3A, WI, etc.) to share more widely to attract new members and showcase events amongst members 3. A fund raising YouTube channel to publicise your preferred charity(ies), especially if you are being sponsored to raise money

Setting up your Channel Click the My Channel button on the left of the YouTube home page and the following will display with your details showing:

Click the Videos tab and you will see:

Click the Upload a video button Notice that you can make the video: 

Public: anyone can see the uploaded video and it will come up in general YouTube searches (probably best if you are creating it for fund-raising or to showcase your club or organisation – examples 2 and 3 above).

Private: only people with whom you choose to share the video are able to watch it but they must have a Google + account to do this (note that you can have a Google Account but not necessarily have signed up to Google + see 8335 Google Plus).

Unlisted: An unlisted video is similar to a private video but those with whom you share do not have to have a Google + account. In the examples above number 1 (family videos) would be best as Unlisted as it would require a Google + account to view them.
