STATEMENT Our mission is to upscale the fight against climate change by making sustainable housing accessible for everyone. The techniques already exist. However, they do not affect the majority of people. Therefore, we’ve created a platform directly connecting researchers, educators and communities. There, we share low-budget and do-ityourself methods for transforming worndown houses into self-sufficient homes.
Dominik Lukkes | Co-founder
Ronen Dan | Co-founder
Bob Hendrikx | Co-founder
During his internship, Dominik did a small study on the opportunities for sustainable building in the region of the Caribbean islands. This was when his interest for sustainable building began to take form. He takes pride in designing sustainable and completely demountable buildings that fit within the circular economy.
Ronen believes architecture is not just stacked bricks, it’s the physical form of a social ideology. Therefore each brick placed is embedded in the ideas and values of the designer. The Motown Movement is his first contribution to making architecture for the people and helping create a sustainable future.
Bob acquired his undergraduate degree with honours. He is eager to put his new designing skills into practice. Besides his study Bob loves to be an entrepreneur. With his distinct vision on the current ways of building, Bob sees a unique chance in applying a sustainable building method in Detroit.
Rianne Stelwagen
Cem Ada
Charlotte de Jong
Rianne is convinced that it is possible to change to world by designing new opportunities and experiences. These designs must always contribute to the well-being of the planet and the people. Her background in Industrial Designing gives a new perspective on the project and hopefully contributes to its success.
Cem discovered his passion for conceptual design and in particular the historical context early on. And so, these aspects became a guiding theme in most of his projects. Preservation of the build environment is what he stands for and therefore he’s naturally committed to the Motown Movement’s project.
Besides architecture, nature has always been very important to Charlotte. Therefore she always tries to make a deep connection between nature and her work. The Motown Movement project gives her the perfect opportunity to engage in sustainability, because it represents all her beliefs.

COMMUNITY
PARTNERS FOCUS: HOPE Focus: HOPE was founded in 1968, as a non-profit organization whose aim is to overcome racism and poverty by providing education and training for underrepresented minorities and others. Nowadays, the organisation serves i.a. as a community development center for the surrounding neighbourhood. There are 5.300 residents and 1.700 housing units in Hope Village. Their partnership with The Motown Movement is to facilitate close neighbourhood involvement.

EDUCATION
RESEARCH
EcoWorks was established in 1981, as a non-profit organization focused on energy education, green building, and sustainable communities. Each year they train about 640 people participating in their workshops. EcoWorks has lead the EcoDistricts protocol to Detroit and is working with Focus:HOPE on a sustainable community. With 35 years of experience, they are the perfect partner for providing workshops in the training center.
TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DELFT THE GREENING OF DETROIT The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1989 to reforest the city. The Greening of Detroit wants to enhance the quality of life for Detroiters by repurposing the land to create beautiful and productive green spaces. They involve the community in their projects and hope to inspire people to imagine a new paradigm for Detroit. With their experience in urban greening they can help with the realization of eg. the urban farm.
This year the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the TU Delft was ranked #4 Architecture school in the world by QS Top Universities. One of the various graduate programs, the Building Technology (BT) track, focuses on structural, façade and climate design, learning students how to contribute to smart buildings that are sustainable, comfortable and environmentally intelligent. The Motown Movement graduate course will be fitted in the BT track and have students continuously evolve The Motown Movement’s projects under supervision of Delft’s highly regarded professors.
DETROIT LAND BANK AUTHORITY The Detroit Land Bank is a public authority dedicated to returning Detroit’s vacant, abandoned, and foreclosed property to productive use. They currently manage over 28 000 vacant residential standing structures in Detroit’s inner city. Partnering with the DLBA enables The Motown Movement to have closer contact with city officials for this home and future projects.
NEW PARADIGM LOVING ACADEMY The New Paradigm Glazer Loving Academy acts as a portal to educational reform in high need areas. The school is a neighborhood beacon and provides a sense of security for the families served. They develop strong community partnerships and align extended programming with the concerns and issues facing families today.
LAWRENCE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY The College of Architecture and Design at the Lawrence Tech recently opened the Detroit Center for Design + Technology to position existing programs to have a greater social and community impact, along with more opportunities to engage organizations and groups that are working to rebuild and rejuvenate the city. They actively promote the notion of advancing practice, design practice and ideas that enable us, as a culture, to make lives better. This mission doubtlessly makes LTU a suitable partner for continuous local research and development of the Motown Movement’s project.

INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION
MAKING SUSTAINABLE HOUSING ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE
Why doesn’t everyone fight against climate change with the technologies already at hand? We stumbled upon this question when examining the Pret-a-Loger project of the Technological University of Delft in 2014 (see on the right). We are able to transform old brokendown houses into self-sufficient homes all over the world, yet we show a lack of effort to inspire, motivate and empower others to do the same.

Their solution was a Home with a Skin: an extra layer put over the house, which improves both the spatial and the climate performance of the existing house, without touching the quality of a home. The Skin was inspired by the food greenhouses, typical of the area. It’s applicable to the post-war row house typology, which are very much present in The Netherlands, United Kingdom and Germany. The project was executed by 52 students of the TU Delft and led by three advising professors from the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. Some of which are now advising The Motown Movement in their efforts too.

The Pret-a-Loger project of the Technical University of Delft took part in the international Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 in Versailles. It finished first in Sustainability and Communication & Social Awareness, second in Energy Efficiency and Construction Management & Safety. Overall, the team won the 3rd prize and was the only one to present a solution for existing buildings.

Thinking about what kind of impact such an innovation could have, it’s not an overstatement to say that scientific effort is not maximizing its outcome on society nowadays. Closing the gap between inventors and users, inventions and uses, could just make the difference for the global effort that is being put into fighting climate change and keeping our world from being used up. Lets bring ourselfs together, so we can fight climate change.

Despite that higher energy efficiency standards are being imposed by Western governments, annually only 0.6-0.9 percent of the housing stock is being built or rebuilt. The focus should be on the remaining 99 percent of the existing housing stock. Herein lies the challenge of our time. New technologies that are brought forth and bettered everyday, are still far from being commonly used. The Pret-a-Loger project shows that a solution such as theirs can be too expensive, radical or incomprehensible for a regular family living in an outdated home. This way, technical innovation and brilliance is left almost untouched by the majority of people.

Average residential energy consumption has annually decreased with roughly 0.5 percent over the last 25 years. This is partly due to increasing energy prices and more efficient appliances. Still, it’s evident that useful technologies are not yet put to full use. Lately, more initiatives are showing the financial benefits of sustainable development and cooperation. However, recent economic, water and food crises proof self-sufficiency to be more than just a financial benefit. To make people understand there are better alternatives for their current utility suppliers, they need to be certain and aware about the ins and outs. Useful information about costs, savings, suppliers and assembly instructions will lower the threshold tremendously for people with no technical background. Freely sharing this information could mean a great deal for people that have never thought about the easy applicable adjustments they can profit from. Therefore, our goal is to upscale the fight against climate change by making sustainable housing accessible for everyone. We want to inspire and motivate other homeowners to take action for their own financial benefits, but moreover for the benefit of our future world and generations. Two birds with one stone, I would say.

Before we visited Detroit, we expected to see an exceptional phenomenon happening: a metropolitan city in full decay. Instead, we saw a city putting itself back together and recovering its lost glory. What a resilience. This inexhaustible dedication inspired us as young architecture students. When the financial crisis of 2008 forced the municipality of Detroit to file bankruptcy, it looked like the battle was worsening for the city that has been plagued by setbacks for decades. The effects of this catastrophic event are still very present in everyday life: broken-down buildings, empty neighbourhoods and high criminality rates. Therefore, it’s not entirely inexplicable that outsiders think of Detroit as a ghost town. Nonetheless, the inhabitants today will argue very differently. Detroit has managed to do the unthinkable: turn the end of days into a laboratory of the future. The vast increase of people abandoning their homes has created heaps of open lots and left behind a great amount of recyclable materials. Fortunately, It didn’t take long before the remaining residents started to recognize the opportunities. In the past few years several great urban initiatives led by entrepreneurial citizens emerged, such as urban farms, art installations, communal sport fields, recycling projects and more. And so the search for selfreliance, fed by decades of mal governance, is achieving significant
progress. This powerful adaptiveness of Detroit people shows that the city is future proof. So now the world is watching the city intently: if Detroit manages to restructure the urban fabric successfully, this can be a model for the rest of the world’s (shrinking) cities. That’s why we see great potential in implementing simple but effective technologies that go along with the Motor City’s resilient, independent and free spirit. Detroit has not only shown us that they embrace bold bottom-up initiatives, but also that they have the urge, capacity and desire to realize change. That’s why the ideal city for our pilot project is Detroit: the do-ityourself city.
DETROIT HAS TURNED THE END OF DAYS INTO THE LABORATORY OF THE FUTURE

SOLUTION AND APPROACH WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE? We will create a community platform directly connecting researchers, educators and users. On this platform we develop and share a low-budget and do-it-yourself method to transform broken-down houses into self-sufficient homes. Our ultimate aim is to inspire other homeowners. With small point mutations functioning as community hubs we want to connect research, education and people to reinforce communities all around the world. Starting with Detroit. Together with students, experts, artists and residents we share knowledge on an international scale. And so, by sharing this exemplary housing project we push other people to act and follow through their ideas for change; turning an initiative into a movement.
THE MENU
THE HOME
GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT
The different methods and techniques will serve as a menu for sustainable interventions. Various solutions will be displayed for the same item, added with useful information about costs, savings, suppliers and assembly instructions. This way people can choose themselves what solution they need, like or can afford. Afterwards, they can simply implement them in their own homes.
The home serves as a showcase and a hub for research, education and community. The ground floor will be our demonstration home with a training center. Most of The Menu will be exposed in its separate rooms. The main use will be to actively spread our knowledge by providing people with workshops and tours teaching visitors about the use of utilities, the ins and outs of sustainable housing transformation and how to cope with the finances. Furthermore, we accommodate space for people to manufacture applications from our Menu in our do-it-yourself workspace. So to foresee residents with all the needs needed to follow up our methods. The upper level of the two-familyhome will be resembling our advised complete make-over model. The model home will be given to a Detroit family that lost their home due to tax foreclosures. Not only does their presence revitalize the neighbourhood, it also provides a great proof of concept for our sustainable method: that people can live comfortably in energy neutral homes in a cost-effective way. The model home will demonstrate the real life reduction of utility costs for a regular household. Finally, the basement will be used to stimulate local entrepreneurship and engagement by housing a microbusiness. This again embodies our vision that we facilitate and enhance community activity by, with and for the people.
Power to the people! Our approach is a typical bottom-up initiative, a grassroots movement. Neighbours are involved in the design, building and programming process. They are the force behind their Motown Movement. Far reaching neighbourhood involvement entirely fits in with Detroits values and standards. Besides, it underlines the latest trend in urban planning. Engaging the neighbours from the beginning ensures we meet the needs of our targeted audience. Too often have artist, developers or municipalities made well-meant but unfitting gestures to Detroit. We treat people’s customs and habits with respect and do not act like a know-itall. A famous quote that we are often told is as follows: ‘nothing about us, without us, is for us.’
Together with our partners in different universities, we set up courses wherein students keep evolving the menu. So it keeps up with its time and the ingenuity of it is not depended on a limited group of students. They continue to develop methods and techniques to turn old homes off-thegrid with little resources. The open-source menu will be a freely available online platform and thereby accessible for everyone.

media outburst. The story will be put on national news channels as well as local journals. Furthermore, we’ll put effort into actively promoting it amongst Detroiters so to have them know the platform exists and they are welcome.
The inspiration and motivation does not only come from our findings, but also from our adventurous story. Therefore, we make sure we’re keeping good track of everything, so it can be published in a documentary along with a narrative book.
For the further success of the Motown Movement it’s of great importance the first project is being widespread and well received.
For the documentary we are working with Dutch Picture Industry (DPI), which are renowned for their unique stories. They are so confident about our story that they cover all production cost and take care of the broadcasting of our 10 episode long series.
Our website will serve as our main reference work. There, the Menu can be downloaded as a PDF or you can simply walk through our interactive 3D model of the Home. Either way, themotownmovement.com will be the freely accessible platform for students, experts, artists and residents to share knowledge about sustainable housing. With all information provided, users can follow step-bystep instructions to upgrade their homes and reduce their bills. From how much you can approximately save to where you can buy your material and how to assemble the application. This brings with it the opportunity for manufacturers to advertise their product and stores.
For the publishing of our narrative book we are looking for a publisher with similar purposes and methods as DPI. Our book will mostly reflect our incentives and experiences amongst with a small selection of our applied techniques. From the moment we first heard of Detroit to the moment when mayor Duggan cuts the ribbon! Both products were perks of our crowdfunding campaign, but from now on will be sold as Motown Movement merchandise.

TU Delft’s mission is to make a significant contribution towards a sustainable society for the twenty-first century by conducting groundbreaking scientific and technological research which is acknowledged as world-class, by training scientists and engineers with a genuine commitment to society and by helping to translate knowledge into technological innovations and activity with both economic and social value. Therefore, designing a graduate course that uses The Motown Movements platform to have students contribute to society was a logical move for our ambassadors within the TU Delft. The annual course is meant to evolve the Menu and give students the opportunity to bring their knowledge into practice.
EcoDistricts’ overall purpose is to drive a new era of district-scale urban development that achieves unsurpassed outcomes in equity, resilience and sustainability. And all this, from the neighbourhood up. Currently, they are running project in dozens of cities across North America. The Motown Movement shares with and participates in EcoDistricts projects in Detroit. The efforts made by all individuals are united through the EcoDistricts network of like-minded organisations. And so, by working together increasing efficiency.
In the future, new project boards will be formed existing of at least three full-time members. These new groups will take over the executive roles and start the planning for new homes in places all around the world. These are cities where the need for sustainable housing is high. In this way, the project boundaries will be extended internationally, reaching more and more people, by which the social and environmental impact will be maximized and the movement will continue to grow!
