Myrifilm® Zero-VOC Coalescing Solvent:

Bringing Formulation Flexibility and Reduced Cost to Compliant Coatings

Formulators of compliant coatings using Myrifilm as their coalescing solvent may be able to reduce formulation costs. Myrifilm is a bio-based, ultra low odor coalescing agent, whose high efficiency enables lower use levels than traditional coalescing agents in some formulations. Because it is zero-VOC, Myrifilm allows the formulation flexibility needed to meet the most stringent environmental compliance regulations while maintaining desired coating performance. Myrifilm can be used in a wide variety of resins and works particularly well in higher Tg resins, resulting in superior coating performance. COALESCING SOLVENT TECHNOLOGY - HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPLIANT COATINGS WITHOUT HIGHER COST Coatings formulators must always balance the competing demands of performance, cost and compliance. As regional VOC regulations have become increasingly stringent, coatings manufacturers have been forced to make changes to their formulations to reduce the level of VOC. Resin suppliers have approached this problem by developing lower Tg resins, with reduced VOC. These multi-phase resins offer compliant performance, but tend to increase formulation cost. Myriant’s coalescing solvent is zero-VOC and highly efficient, using less with comparable performance especially when used in higher Tg resin formulations. Choosing Myrifilm as the coalescing solvent allows the formulator to work with more traditional, lower cost resins. The benefit? Better finished paint performance in coatings that will form films utilizing higher Tg resins.

Myrifilm® Zero-VOC Coalescing Solvent:

Bringing Formulation Flexibility and Reduced Cost to Compliant Coatings Coalescing Solvent Technology Coalescing solvents are a key functional component of waterborne coating systems. In a typical waterborne paint, polymer particles are dispersed in water along with pigment particles and a number of other functional additives. As the paint is applied to a surface, the water begins to evaporate and the particles begin to approach each other. The polymer particles, assisted by the coalescing solvent, begin to flow together to create a coherent polymer film. This film, which adheres to the surface and holds the pigment particles in place, has properties that are critical to the performance of the final paint. The coalescing solvent must not adversely affect the properties of the finished paint by softening the film or having a residual unpleasant odor.

Performance Compared to Conventional Coalescing Solvents Myrifilm was evaluated in a typical formulation using Dow Rhoplex SG-30 semi-gloss all acrylic resin. The properties of both the paint and the finished film were evaluated. The control coalescing solvents used were Texanol™ (Eastman), TXIB (Eastman), Optifilm 400™ (Eastman) and dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether (DPnB) (Dow). Semi-Gloss Formulation Function

Identical Performance with Low Odor and Zero-VOC Myrifilm is an Efficient Coalescing Solvent To compare the coalescing solvents, Myrifilm and Texanol were added to separate laboratory semi-gloss formulation samples. Myrifilm’s efficiency was highlighted in producing identical film properties at half the concentration of Texanol with very low odor and zero-VOC.
