Nikhil Hegde Co-founder of 6Degree Networks Limited from India Leeds is a place where I can proudly say that “dreams do come true!” Going back to school after 8 years of work was a thrill in itself. A gripping year with students from over 12 countries and varying experiences is something that I will cherish for life. The University also gave the opportunity to interact with students from other universities through study tours and networking events, which was not just enjoyable but also beneficial in developing a mature mindset towards business.

I always hoped to start my own business. Through the Business School, I was able to get the right guidance, access to networks and be mentored in that direction. Everyone is here to help. Such support allowed me to be focused and stay on track. On completing my MBA, I was immediately able to set up my business in the UK and also be incubated by the University. I was provided with the right mentors and was quickly able to raise initial investments to set my dreams in motion. The University endorsed my business plan. I currently work between UK and India. The Leeds MBA is a must have experience for any student who dares to dream. LEEDS UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL | 05

08 Research-led, Practicefocused Research-led

The Business School produces worldclass, internationally relevant research. We are at the forefront of interdisciplinary research – where business meets the arts, science and engineering, politics, transport, social sciences, medicine and health. Leeds University Business School has several world-leading research centres whose staff teach on the MBA. The School boasts the UK’s premier research centre for international business, the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds. Founded by Professor Peter Buckley OBE, it oversees the work of two other centres, focusing on the major emerging nations – China and India – as well as conducting research for governments and businesses seeking to expand internationally. Given Leeds’ position as a financial services hub, it’s not surprising that our academics working through our Institute of Banking and Investment and Credit Management Research Centre are among the most respected in the UK. Marketing is another area of excellence. Our Global and Strategic Marketing Research Centre is led by one of the UK’s foremost professors of marketing, Professor Costas Katsikeas. It specialises in global and business.leeds.ac.uk

strategic marketing, consumer behaviour, branding and communications. As organisations and the nature of work change in an ultracompetitive marketplace, specialists from our Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change work with employers and staff to develop effective working practices. The Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Studies at the University of Leeds is the focal point for enterprise education and research. In 2015, Leeds was awarded The Duke of York Award for University Entrepreneurship at the National Business Awards, for the University’s role in encouraging and enabling student entrepreneurship and supporting high growth small businesses in the region. Leeds has also won ‘Entrepreneurial University of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education Awards (2015) and the Guardian University Award for Entrepreneurship (2016). The Leeds MBA

12 The Leeds MBA Drawing on the strengths of this vibrant city, highly ranked University and excellent Business School, the Leeds MBA offers you a top-quality learning and development experience. Induction

There is an induction at the beginning of the first semester, providing you with important background information to make the most of your MBA learning experience. You are introduced to the culture of Leeds University Business School and the Leeds MBA in particular. We focus on learning and learning support, with plenty of time thinking about the learning process itself: identifying and evaluating your preferred learning style; learning in the context of groups; study and research skills; academic writing conventions such as referencing; learning in a cross-cultural context; and diagnosing your particular learning needs so that, if necessary, further support can be given. The induction is also an opportunity to take a long hard look at your own strengths and weaknesses, your personality and career ambitions. Throughout the induction and the rest of the programme, we stress the development of your self-awareness

business.leeds.ac.uk

and self-management skills – critical resources for successful leaders. The induction is also the start of the networking process – an important characteristic of the Leeds MBA. You get the chance to meet alumni and external professionals, and begin the process of becoming part of our extended network of contacts. The induction is a compulsory and integral part of the overall programme. It ensures you begin your studies fully prepared for the exciting opportunities that are presented to you and that you make the most of your time with us. During induction you will also be provided with an electronic tablet device to complement and enhance your studies. The Executive Boardroom at the Business School is the exclusive teaching space for full-time MBA students and you will also have the support of MBA dedicated staff in the postgraduate office to answer any queries you may have.

Live challenges

Key to the Leeds MBA are the live challenges that will stretch your thinking and your abilities. Our New Venture and Consulting Challenges make us stand apart from many of our competitors – and they will ensure that you stand apart from yours.

New Venture Challenge

This challenge forms part of the Strategic and Entrepreneurial Management module. It develops your ability to generate ideas for new commercial opportunities and turn these into viable business plans for established or start-up companies. Working in teams mentored by Business School staff, you will have to show creativity and insight in developing a new product or service proposition. This challenge tests your teamwork and entrepreneurial aptitude, ensuring you gain a real understanding of the new venture planning process, a key skill for those in established companies as well as start-ups.

Consulting Challenge

This challenge takes place during the Leading in Practice module. By this point in the programme, your leadership and management knowledge and skills will have reached a level whereby you can confidently provide high-quality consultancy support to a business in need. Typically,

this is a small business, social enterprise, voluntary sector organisation or charity – an organisation that does not have the funds or managerial resources to address all the challenges it faces. You engage with the client, diagnose a significant problem or issue affecting the organisation, make a positive intervention, and take appropriate action to either remedy the situation or make recommendations for further action.

Student view Yi Xin Cao from China The Leeds MBA provided me with an excellent and unique opportunity to apply my MBA learning in the large, globally recognised retail corporation, Marks & Spencer. Alumni view

Phil Spooner TV Sports Producer from the UK I came from an industry where an MBA is unusual and not a prerequisite for progress. I didn’t do it to impress people. I did it for myself. The confidence that I acquired by completing the course has been invaluable. It made the idea of starting my own business seem easy. My most recent contract was a job that came to me many years ahead of schedule. I believe my career progression was accelerated considerably by the MBA, not because of the badge, but because of the changes that it made to the way I think and behave.

Nikhil took part in the 2014 study tour to Heilbronn, Germany.

Prior to coming to Leeds I was a manager at one of the leading banks in Nigeria. I embarked on the Leeds MBA to enhance my professional skills and progress my career. But it completely changed my thought processes – it transformed me from an employee to a successful entrepreneur, building one of the fastest growing cosmetic brands in Africa.

I strongly believe that this is a must-have experience. Through company visits and theory, it shows you the distinct difference in work cultures across multiple geographies and helps you to understand the skills required to adapt to such environments.

Zaron Cosmetics launched in 2011 and has 15 franchise outlets nationwide, with an outlet in Ghana. It also has over 800 distributors in Nigeria and other African countries. It’s a business success, and it’s empowering individuals in Africa to be able to earn a living through its distributorship scheme.

Nikhil Hegde Co-founder of 6Degree Networks Limited from India

The skills, management capability and knowledge acquired from the Leeds MBA definitely got me to where I am today. Zaron Cosmetics is the outcome of my business dissertation. The experience and exposure has transformed my life – and the lives of thousands of people associated with the Zaron brand. In February 2016 Oke was recognised as a finalist for the entrepreneurial award at the UK British Council Education Alumni Awards. These awards celebrate outstanding success in Entrepreneurship, Professional Achievement, and Social Impact by alumni who have studied at UK higher education institutions within the last ten years. Top alumni were selected from more than 800 high quality applicants.

You build a great support network and make lasting friendships that extend way beyond graduation. As well as MBA socials, you have the University and city of Leeds to entertain you – sports to watch, sports to play, theatre, live comedy, eating out, just getting to know the area. Selecting the Best

30 Selecting the Best Our admissions process identifies and selects the most talented managers from a wide range of business and cultural backgrounds. You should be able to demonstrate leadership, maturity and motivation, and be able to contribute to the MBA programme as a whole.

Entry requirements Academic

A good bachelor degree awarded by a UK university, or overseas equivalent, or an acceptable professional qualification.

Work experience

A minimum of three years’ postgraduate work experience is required before you apply – this should include appropriate management experience and show some career progression. If you don’t have the required amount of work experience, you may like to consider our MSc Management. If you don’t have a formal academic or professional qualification, we will consider your application based on your management experience (sometimes in conjunction with a GMAT test). In this case, you should have at least five years’ experience, which must include evidence of significant progression and management responsibility.

English language

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 with not less than 6.0 in any element. If you narrowly fail to meet the required English score but meet the other entry requirements, the University of Leeds offers excellent presessional language programmes designed to enhance your language and study skills before the MBA. Other qualifications are also considered; please visit our website for more details at business.leeds.ac.uk/the-leedsmba/entry-requirements/english-languagerequirements

Apply for the Leeds MBA

1

Stage 1: Initial application review

We review your MBA application form and supporting documents (essay questions, approved English language test, etc) to consider the strength of your application across all areas.

2

Stage 2: Interview

The interview is an important and compulsory part of our admissions process, enabling us to assess your suitability for the Leeds MBA. You need to demonstrate your motivation to do the course, your knowledge of what the Leeds MBA has to offer, and how you will contribute positively to the programme. You will be interviewed face-to-face where possible – by a member of our MBA staff or alumni in your country, by the MBA or Admissions Director on campus, or by phone or Skype. The Programme Director speaks to all potential candidates in person before a final offer is made.

3

Stage 3: Decision

The MBA Admissions team makes a final decision after your interview. We consider all our entry criteria when evaluating your application, as well as your post-MBA career goals and whether the Leeds MBA is likely to help you fulfil them.

4

Stage 4: Accepting your offer

Once you receive your offer letter, you normally have five weeks to accept and confirm your place. You need to provide original or certified copies of your supporting documents before or at registration.

5

Stage 5: Coming to Leeds

Induction starts in mid-September. You will receive full registration details before your arrival. The induction introduces you to your life in Leeds, the Business School environment and the MBA. The induction is compulsory and vitally important. We recommend that you arrive in Leeds at least one week before your induction to allow you to settle into your new home.

Application deadline
