Making churches more secure Facing the real threat of burglaries, vandalism and other violence, local churches are taking steps to deter crime By Leigh Landini Wright Sun Features Editor

Return, restore, reoccupy
If Charles Dunbar’s vision is realized, the vacant church he grew up near will once again be vibrant with activity. But he needs help to relocate his ministry to the historic building.

The Rev. Charles Dunbar of Restoration Christian Ministries is making plans to bring his ministry back to where it all started. Dunbar has his current church building at 857 McGuire Ave. for sale in preparation for a move to a vacant building at 626 Walter Jetton Blvd. Dunbar founded Old Ship of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in the building several years ago, but in recent years it housed the New Hope Church, he said. “I grew up about 200 or 300 feet from that building in a shotgun house,” Dunbar said. “There were seven of us. The building was built in 1922. It’s a historic church. It has great potential. “The building has been empty for several months. Vandals went in and broke windows. Really it was trashed. It’s a move of faith. It’s a vision God wants me to do and a mission that He wants me to accomplish.” The church has named the mission the Nehemiah project, after the book in the Old Testament. “Nehemiah received news the walls of his city had been burned down and the gates,” Dunbar said. “He was the king’s cup bearer, and when he received the news he was sad. That’s how I felt when I looked at the church and saw where it had been vandalized.”
Help wanted Anyone interested in helping with the restoration process can call Dunbar at 210-4393 or elder Harold Schultz at 443-1301.
Dunbar said he hopes to have the church restored in 52 days, the same amount of time it took Nehemiah to rebuild the Wall of Jerusalem. “We need people willing to help restore it,” Dunbar said. “We need labor, monies, carpenters, painters, electricians and roofers. We want it to be a community outreach ministry. We want to connect with the community and the people there. As we rebuild the building, we’re going to rebuild lives. It’s a process.” Dunbar said the church will offer GED classes and financial counseling as well as life skills and job preparation lessons. “We would also like to feed the hungry twice a month and possibly be a fallout shelter,” he said. Charles Williams, who has lived across from the church for 40 years, said he and his wife, Frances, are thrilled the church will be viable again. “We would like to see the church be restored because it’s been an eyesore in recent months,” he said. “It’s attracting a lot of vandals. I’ve known (Dunbar) all his life. I’m very proud of him.”
Sunglasses Sunday will be celebrated Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Fulton. The day is part of Project 20/20, which has helped improve the vision of 24,000 people since 1993. ● Ten descriptions of love from the Trumpeter of Twelve Oaks Baptist Church of Paducah: 1. Love is a commandment. (John 13:34) 2. Love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:5) 3. Love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:10) 4. Love is kind. (1 Corinthians 13:4) 5. Love is greater than faith. (1 Cor. 13:13) 6. Love is greater than hope. 1 Cor. 13:13) 7. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22) 8. Love is the bond of perfectness. (Colossians 3:14) 9. Love is of God ... (1 John 4:7) 10. Love is living according to God’s commandments. (2 John 6)
Every door at the sprawling First Baptist Church of Paducah complex was unlocked during daylight hours a few years ago. “It was God’s house, and no one would ever think of disrespecting God’s house,” said Dean Carpenter, administrative minister at the church. “It is no longer a Christian culture. ... Paducah is still a wonderful community, but we’re not exempt. There have been so many church break-ins. Churches are an easy mark because they are so trusting. The respect for the church is not the same as it was.” First Baptist now has electronic keypads on all side and back doors, and visitors during the week must enter through a main door. A video camera records each person entering the building. Interior doors now can be locked, sealing off unused areas of the church during activities, Carpenter said. As with schools and businesses, security has become a priority for churches big and small, urban and rural, and it crosses denominational lines. Consider that in recent years, shootings have claimed the lives of people worshipping at churches and that fires have destroyed churches. On a Wednesday evening in 1999, Larry Gene Alsobrook opened fire on youth inside Wedgewood Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, killing seven people. In October 2002, Sheila W. Chaney Wilson opened fire at the Turner Monumental African Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta, killing her mother, Jennie Mae Robinson and the pastor Johnny Clyde Reynolds before turning the gun on herself. Nationally known evangelist T.D. Jakes now hosts an annual security conference at his megachurch, the Potter’s House, near Dallas. The conference is dubbed STOPPED for Security Training Offering Procedure Protection Education and Direction. “Regrettably today, there seems to be a growing cynicism against the work of the Lord and his workers,” Jakes told the Christian Post in a Jan. 18 article. “Hate groups are on the rise, terrorism is smoldering and corruption has leered at the church with an ominous intent.” Locally, churches have reported burglaries and vandalism. Margaret Hank Cumberland Presbyterian Church was
burglarized several times in 2002. Since then, the church has installed a video camera to monitor who enters, and all exterior doors are locked, pastor David West said. “The city has beefed up police protection in our area,” West said. “That has really helped us a lot.” West hopes that the Fountain Avenue Revitalization Program will help deter any criminals who have settled in the neighborhood. Lone Oak First Baptist recently advertised in its bulletin for volunteers to help with its security force. Associate Pastor Mike Williams said the church long has had a security plan and committee, but has revised and revamped it to accommodate the needs of the growing congregation. Security committee members include several current and retired law Please see CHURCH’S / 2C
