he heat is stifling at times this summer, but I’m sure I’ll be longing for days like this in about six months! Cleveland weather certainly has hit some extremes, but compared to other parts of the country dealing with drought, floods, fire, and more, I’ll take Cleveland any day. Looking back, I hope everyone had a great time at The Hooley on Kamm’s CornersTM. Although the weather could have been better, we still had an amazing crowd and a great time. Our sincere thanks go to our Presenting Sponsor Fairview Hospital and our Family Entertainment Stage Sponsor Dollar Bank. Next year will mark The Hooley’s fifth year. Look for some surprises! Thanks to all of you who attended our Annual Town Meeting and saw an abbreviated presentation of our new Strategic Plan, created by our Board of Trustees with extensive neighborhood input. While we know that any plan will need to be adjusted to changing circumstances, our advocacy for neighborhood residents will always remain a primary directive. Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market is off to a great summer, with attendance up about 50% over last year. A great variety of vendors, along with live music and chef demonstrations each week, have made it a Sunday tradition for many of your neighbors. How about you? See the story on page 14. How much more fun is yet to come this summer? Asphalt Cinema is August 16th, also the start of the fabulous Romanian Festival at St. Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Cathedral. Then, over Labor Day weekend, the Cretan Center Greek Festival returns, and the Gaelic Games participants will be taking up residence in Kamm’s Corners, too. It will be a fun and busy long weekend! Be careful driving as the streets are teeming with kids, dog walkers, bikers, and the like. And please don’t text and drive. Enjoy the rest of the summer, and I hope to see you at one of the many great events coming up. As always, let us know how we’re doing.

News from Ward 19 and City Hall

Dear Neighbor: The daily rain has left for a while and now summer can really begin. Even though fall sports and the school year are at our doorstep, there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy West Park. Already, we have enjoyed some significant events, and they were wonderful. For example, The Hooley on Kamm’s CornersTM was a blast. The weather held off and an estimated 20,000 people came through our great neighborhood and left happy. Whether they call Ward 19 home or they were visiting for the first time, the countless friends I spoke with were thoroughly impressed with where we are and where we are heading. The 2013 Independence Day Parade was also a resounding success. Special thanks to our dear West Park Kiwanis Club for organizing and managing the biggest summer parade in the city. I can’t tell you how many people say it’s the best parade in Cleveland. I have to agree. As a parade participant, turning from Lorain Avenue onto West Park Avenue is one of the most exciting moments of the day. I love to see the families and friends starting the holiday by sitting on the curb, waving and screaming. This year my group gave away a record 230 pounds of candy. “Sorry” to the parents, and “You’re welcome” to the dentists. We have two Asphalt Cinemas already gone and one more to come! August 16th at Impett Park enjoy West Park’s favorite Brand New Hat providing the entertainment before the screening of the movie “The Lorax” at dusk. Please come out and join my family and me as we celebrate our neighborhood, enjoy some great music, and experience watching a movie under the stars. Historic St. Patrick Church will be celebrating their 165th Anniversary with an old fashioned Parish Picnic on August 18th, starting with Mass at 11 a.m. followed by great fun, food, and friends. What a wonderful way to celebrate this remarkable institution. A huge thank you to Fr. Ohls and the awesome folks putting this together. A few more upcoming events include the 12th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run on September 15th at 8:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Academy. If you’re not up for the run through the park, you can join the rest of us on a leisurely 1-mile run/walk down Rocky River Drive for a great cause. Please keep the Block Party applications coming. The forms are available at my office, or I’m happy to drop one off. My office will 5

also walk it through to save you a trip to City Hall. We have great neighbors and great neighborhoods. Why not take a Saturday, close the street, and celebrate? For months we yell at the kids to stay out of the street on their bikes. Why not give them a day off? Most outdoor grills have wheels. Guys? Roll them into the middle of the street and show off your best Father’s Day apron or that secret recipe most believe you bought at K&K Portage. Significant construction has recently wrapped up, is under way, or is in the planning stage. Fairview Hospital’s state of the art ED/ ICU has opened. What an amazing facility! Upwards of $70 million dollars to continue to provide world-class health care right in our own neighborhood. St. Joseph Academy continues to upgrade their facilities by making significant investments in their infrastructure. This is another example of their commitment to the community and their true mission of molding and empowering young women to be spiritual and world leaders of tomorrow. I cannot mention Fairview Hospital and St. Joseph Academy without acknowledging our dear friend and daughter of West Park, Jan Murphy. Jan has been President of Fairview Hospital since 2007 and worked there for nearly 35 years. Recently, Jan has been named the Chief Operating Officer of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Jan’s many accomplishments make her truly a special person. Her grace and passion and kindness led her to where she is today and left those she touched and this community better for it. Good luck and God Bless! Please stay tuned for updates on the other significant capital projects slated for Ward 19, including the final plans for Triskett and Warren Roads and Puritas and Lorain Avenues. Also coming up are exciting improvements to Gunning Recreation Center and Impett Park. Thanks to Mayor Jackson and his staff, we have secured significant Issue I and capital bond dollars to make our great neighborhoods even better. Congratulation to the St. Edward and St. Joseph Academy Varsity Rugby Teams! Both are State Champs heavily represented by neighborhood kids. You make us all proud! Enjoy the rest of your summer! Be safe and keep it local. Remember, our local vendors and small business owners are the backbone of this community and deserve our support!

The Kamm’s Corners Summer Music Series Presenting a wide breadth of live music in styles ranging from jug band to rock-nroll, the series launched with The Hooley on Kamm’s Corners™ and continues weekly throughout the summer at our Kamm’s Corners Farmers Markets every Sunday, from June through October, and at our monthly Asphalt Cinema in Impett Park on the third Friday in June, July, and August. These musical presentations receive public support in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. KCDC is pleased to be a recipient of such funding in order to bring live music to the community.

Residents and local stakeholders met for our 36th Annual Town Meeting on the evening of June 26, at River’s Edge, 3430 Rocky River Drive. This was a new venue for the meeting because our usual home, St. Joseph Academy (SJA), is undergoing extensive interior renovation this summer. Speakers included Ward 19 Councilman Marty Keane and KCDC Executive Director Steve Lorenz. The councilman provided updates on current neighborhood projects. He announced that the Triskett Road resurfacing project was going to bid this winter for the project to take place next summer (2014). It will be the single largest resurfacing project in Cleveland. Portions of Puritas and Lorain Avenues will also be resurfaced. Two capital improvement projects have been approved: • $500,000 for Impett Park (Input from residents will be sought on how to spend the money.) • $450,000 for Gunning Recreation Center to improve the locker rooms.

• Pat McCafferty was presented with an appreciation award for his 6 years of leadership as President of the KCDC Board of Trustees. Pat is a neighborhood resident and continues on the board today. Community Improvement Awards were presented to the following businesses for enhancing and beautifying the physical environment of the community: • Cafe Falafel 3842 Riveredge Road • Fairview Hospital Emergency

There were displays and informational tables by local non-profit organizations. Free refreshments included coffee, hot tea, ice water, and fresh cookies baked by K&K Portage Market. Approximately 200 guests attended this enjoyable event, celebrating life in West Park.

Strategic Planning Process Reveals Communication Gap Our strategic planning process included several community meetings and interviews as well as an online survey. One of the many things we learned is that there is some confusion around what we do, what we don’t do, where we work, and how we help West Park residents access services. Probably the biggest misconception is that we work only in “downtown” Kamm’s Corners. The truth is that we work in all of Ward 19 in both commercial and residential capacities. In recent years, we certainly have concentrated efforts in our “downtown” to capitalize on the new streetscape improvements completed in 2008. However, we continue to work ward wide, with many projects and initiatives outside our core commercial district. And, as our “downtown” continues to improve, we will work in a more concentrated fashion in other parts of the ward. Below this article is a chart that we hope will help to clarify our role. The bottom line is that regardless of your need, we are your advocates. While we can’t always be the solution, we can usually connect you to the solution or assist you in accessing services or programs offered through the City of Cleveland or by an array of our non-profit partners. Call us and we’ll do our very best to help. An overview of our Strategic Plan was presented at our Annual Town Meeting, highlighted elsewhere in this magazine. A complete copy of the plan can be accessed at our website at kammscorners.com at the “About” tab. No internet access? Just give us a call at 216-252-6559, ext. 1600.

At July’s Asphalt Cinema, Style Mutt conducted a “Pin the Nose on the Doggy” game with prizes! Join them on Facebook or visit stylemutt.com for photos and additional information. Fall Opening Planned for Red Lantern Kitchen and Bar

Residents hoping for an August opening for the new Red Lantern Kitchen and Bar will have to wait just a little longer. But, the finished interior promises to be modern and extremely inviting – and worth the extra wait. General Manager Mike Lucas is working with Chef Brian McNeff and Chef Chris McCarthy to come up with something on the menu for every palate among these offerings: appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, flatbreads, full plate dishes, and desserts. New will be a brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We are definitely keeping the nostalgia of the old Red Lantern with a couple of different varieties of fish,” said co-owner Cory Rowland. “These include Killian’s battered fish fry and Lake Erie perch-n-chips.” The drink menu will include some traditional barrel aged cocktails such as Peach Jameson Old Fashioned, Negroni, White Manhattan, and Vanilla Bean Side Car. But, many local brews and spirituous liquor will be featured, too. A variety of wine will be offered as well as “special” milkshakes for those 21 and older. Happy hour will take place throughout the week with specials on certain foods and drinks each day. “We look forward to joining the West Park community and partaking in the Kamm’s Corners events that take place throughout the year,” said Cory. For additional updates and information leading up to the opening, follow them on Facebook at Red Lantern Kitchen and Bar. They are also on Twitter @kammsredlantern.

See, taste, and hear Greek culture at the third annual Cretan Center’s Greek Festival, taking place Labor Day weekend. The festival begins on Friday, August 30, this year! West 168th Street from Lorain Avenue south to Albers Avenue will be closed for festival use. Parking will be available in the municipal lot. Live music, Greek dancers in traditional folk costumes, and plenty of food will highlight the festival as it runs Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Monday, September 2, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Amazing Greek food can be purchased inside the airconditioned center or from the grill outside. All food is provided exclusively by City Club Catering, which operates inside the Cretan Center. Seating is available both indoors and outdoors. New this year is traditional fire roasted lamb on the spit – tender and juicy! Other offerings include plenty of spanakopita, souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, pastichio, halfchicken portion, lamb, vegetarian plates, calamari, French fries, and more. Inside the center, Greek lager (Mythos) and several Greek wines will be offered among the libations. And everyone will want to try a Baklava sundae with whipped cream and cherry. A DJ will keep the music going each day from 2 to 6 p.m. Then, Greek dancing takes place, performed by youth groups from two Greek churches. Afterward, the popular Greek band Stigma plays through the evening. There will be a 50/50 raffle on Sunday night and another one on Monday. Tickets will be sold on site. All major credit cards will be accepted, and an ATM machine will be available in the main dining hall for your convenience. Last year’s festival was a big success, and this one portends to be even better. “We have added Friday because many people asked for it,” said Andy Rokakis, festival board member and volunteer.

National Gaelic Games Here Over Labor Day Weekend

Presently Enrolling for Fall 2013  Three Star Award Winning School

The annual North American Gaelic Games Finals will be held here in Cleveland over Labor Day Weekend! The event could bring an estimated $1.2 million into the region’s economy. That’s the estimate from the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and the Midwest Gaelic Athletic Association, which helped to bring the event and its 2,000 athletes to Cleveland. The title sponsor of this huge event is Skylight Financial Group of Cleveland. The event is being led by members of Cleveland’s St. Pat’s Gaelic Football Club. The finals are the annual championship of Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie for 80 men’s and women’s teams from around the United States. They will be held at the Barton-Bradley Sports Complex in North Olmsted. Teams will stay at area hotels, with the Sheraton Cleveland Airport and the Marriott Hotel on West 150th Street in Cleveland serving as the game’s host hotels. Post-game neighborhood events will be held at Irish pubs and restaurants here in Kamm’s Corners as seven local establishments are all on board as official sponsors of the games: Back Stage Bar, PJ McIntyre’s, Paddy Rock Super Pub, Public House, Smedley’s Bar and Grille, West Park Panini’s, and West Park Station. A shuttle service will run each night of the event bringing the athletes to the Kamm’s Corners business district. Said Steve Lorenz, KCDC’s Executive Director, “We are so happy to see the Gaelic Games are coming to Cleveland. With our large Irish population in Kamm’s Corners and St. Pat’s Gaelic Football Club right around the corner, we look forward to seeing many of the athletes in our neighborhood after the games conclude each day.” Cleveland’s own St. Pat’s Gaelic Football Club has campaigned to host the games for six years on behalf of the division. St. Pat’s Club Chairman and also current Midwest Divisional Chairman Mark Owens, originally from Derry City, Ireland, has spearheaded the bid each time. “The Midwest Gaelic Athletic Association is very excited to have won the rights to host the 2013 North American Gaelic Games,” Owens said in a written statement. “We are equally excited that Cleveland will be the host city, due to its long and celebrated history of Gaelic games going back roughly 90 years.” Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie are typically very hightempo, with constant action. Owens said having the national games here will give the Midwest Gaelic Athletic Association an opportunity to bring awareness about the games. “I would especially like to thank the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission for their assistance with both resources and ideas over the past few years, and look forward to working together once again to help make this a memorable event for participating athletes and spectators,” Owens added. “The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is thrilled to support the Midwest Gaelic Athletic Association in hosting a successful tournament and welcome athletes and visitors from all across the United States to Cleveland. I am confident that everyone will have a first-rate experience here,” said David Gilbert, president and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

Tasty Middle Eastern Food in Kamm’s Corners

…by Cindy Janis

“The best falafel I’ve had in Cleveland.” “Everything is amazingly fresh and delicious.” “The smoothest, most flavorful hummus I’ve ever had!” “The grilled chicken entrée was so tasty and juicy. Definitely going back, and highly recommend.” These are some of the many favorable comments heard around the neighborhood about Café Falafel, located at 3843 Riveredge Road near Fairview Hospital. Owner Ihab Enaia opened his restaurant on March 1, offering healthy Middle Eastern food fit for your lifestyle. “All our dishes are made to order with fresh ingredients,” said Ihab. “We don’t add preservatives or MSG, and our meats are never frozen or pre-cooked. Our original recipe salad dressing and marinades are made with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, and herbs.” Café Falafel offers three kinds of kabobs: shish kabob (beef tenderloin), shish kefta (ground beef style), and shish tawook (chicken). The marinated, char-grilled kabob entrees are served with rice, Middle Eastern salad, and either tahini or garlic sauce. Or, enjoy your favorite kabob atop a mixed greens salad or wrapped in a warm pita with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, pickled turnips, parsley, and tahini or garlic sauce. “Everything is made fresh in house,” said Ihab. “I cut and grind the beef and cut the chicken into pieces to marinate for the kabobs. I use only metal skewers, and the kabob sits one inch above the grill for slower cooking to retain 3330 Warren Road  (216) 252-5080 the juices.” (Inside Warren Village Plaza next to Buyers Outlet) Ihab can be found early mornings grilling eggplant to make baba ghanouj Under New Ownership! and jalapenos for his special recipe jaion Select t s e g r Newly Renovated! ! lapeno sauce. The menu lists several vegetarian dishes such as a variety of grilled veggies served with rice and salad, and Mjadera consisting of lentils and rice topped with fried onions and served with a salad. A selection of salads and homemade lentil soup is also offered. The most interestingly prepared dish is the beef shawarma. A vertical spit slowly turns and cooks marinated strips of beef tenderloin to perfection for pita sandwiches and specialty salads. The creative neon signage for Café Falafel depicts a chef slicing the shawarma from the spit. Also, a vinyl sign band listing popular menu items extends across the bottom of the windows. The signage was designed with the assistance of the City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program. The program offers a 40% rebate up to $25,000 for exterior building renovations, and a 40% rebate up to $3,000 for new tenant signage. “We had an idea of how we wanted our sign to look, and the Storefront Program provided the extra funds to

make it possible,” Ihab said. “We are very satisfied with our sign. It’s just what we wanted.”

“We would like to thank our customers for making us feel so welcome,” Ihab continued. “After touring several locations, we chose Kamm’s Corners to open our restaurant because we were impressed with the neighborhood. We could see that the neighborhood supported a variety of successful restaurants and businesses, and we

wanted to be part of the food options for Kamm’s Corners. In fact, we love the neighborhood so much that we moved here last month after thirteen years in the suburbs.” Café Falafel’s menu is primarily for take out. The restaurant has two small tables with two seats each inside and two large picnic tables outside. Visit the restaurant to watch your order being prepared as you wait, or view the complete menu at mycafefalafel.com and call 216688-0330 to place an order. Hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. Café Falafel also offers catering for all your special events. It’s not about running the fastest. It’s not about running the furthest. It’s about coming out to support the local community and those who gave their lives in the name of serving others. The West Park Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial Fund was established in 2002 to create a lasting Memorial to honor both Police Officers and Firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty while either serving the citizens of Cleveland’s West Park area or while living in the community. The Memorial itself is set in the Memorial Walkway along the west side of Rocky River Drive. At its center is the Memorial, a granite and

munity a gathering place to honor their memory. Joining to support this memorial are the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, Cleveland Fire Fighters Association, Local 93, local government, and local citizens. To show appreciation and support for the West Park community, a scholarship is given each year to a local school in the name of one of the fallen Police Officers and Firefighters. The Cleveland Heroes Run, a 5-mile and 2-mile Community Race, was created to raise funds to make this tribute possible and to establish and fund annual scholarships for family members of the honored fallen West Park Police Officers and Firefighters. The 12th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run is set for Sunday, September 15 at 8:30 a.m. It begins and ends at St. Joseph Academy, 3470 Rocky River Drive. The entry fee is $20, but $25 race weekend. Visit the website at westparkmemorial.org to register for the 5-mile run or 2-mile run/walk.

KCDC Partners with Cuyahoga County Land Bank to Improve West Park Before After One of our newer initiatives is to rehabilitate single-family houses that we acquire mainly through our partners at the Cuyahoga County Land Bank. The land bank’s mission includes renovation of deserving housing stock as well as increasing home ownership, so these houses are offered to KCDC at or near cost in most cases. The houses have typically gone through the foreclosure process and have been vacant for an extended period. Rehabilitation moves the property back into private hands and back on the tax rolls. And, it eliminates the blighting influence that vacant/abandoned structures bring to our streets. If you live near one of these vacant/ abandoned houses, you surely understand the negative impact it has on the surrounding properties and property values. We have successfully sold these fully rehabilitated homes to owner occupants at market prices. Buyers receive a completely renovated home that will require little or no maintenance for several years. Profits from the sales allow us to tackle more houses, maximizing our impact across West Park. We typically do the renovation “in house,” using local contractors as often as possible. Sometimes, if we have hit the limit of our capacity, the home will be transferred to a developer who rehabilitates the home to our specifications. In this case the work is closely monitored, and the home must still be sold to an owner occupant. We greatly appreciate our partnership with the Cuyahoga County Land Bank! If you are a contractor and would like to bid on some of the renovation work, or if you are looking for a home in West Park, please contact us.

Walker’s Store

Arts Center Update

…by Gary Swilik

In the early 1900s, the council of Rockport, Ohio (future West Park) set out to locate the “most public places” in the village for the purpose of posting official announcements and ordinances. It was determined the most public place was the West Park Post Office. Second was Oswald Kamm’s Store on Lorain Avenue (now Panini’s Restaurant). In third place, was an establishment most people today have never heard of – “Walker’s Store.” Walker’s Store, owned by Charles and Emma Walker, was a busy grocery and general store, which stood at 19406 Puritas Avenue. The Walkers were early residents in the Puritas Springs area. Charles Walker came here from Canada in 1864. Charles’ wife Emma was the daughter of Chauncey and Julia Jordon, who came here from New York in 1842 to settle on Puritas Avenue near Grayton Road. Charles and Emma were married on June 12, 1876. The Walker home was adjacent to their store and included at least six acres of surrounding farmland. Emma spent nearly her entire life within a quarter-mile of the spot where she was born. Not only did the Walkers sell groceries at their store, but in 1910, they purchased an interest in the famous Puritas Springs nearby. They bottled the spring water, and sold it directly to the public. The Walkers advertised they were “now prepared to make prompt delivery of this un-excelled table water.” By this time, however, the water treatment process known as “chlorination” was making Lake Erie water safe to drink and the demand for spring water was dropping. The Walker’s venture into the water business does not seem to have been profitable. At least there is no evidence to that effect. In 1912, the Walkers apparently retired and put their grocery store up for rent although they continued to live in the home next door. In December that same year, Charles Walker passed away at the family residence on Puritas Avenue at age 65. His wife Emma lived another 24 years before dying at the residence in 1937 at age 78. Charles and Emma Walker are buried at Alger Cemetery. The Walkers had two sons and a daughter: Harry, Fred, and Etta. Both sons went into the milk business and for many years they operated competing dairies, almost next to each other, on Lorain Avenue. All of the Walker children are also buried in Alger Cemetery. The Walker store and home remained standing on Puritas Avenue until the early 1960s. Over the years the store served as a small market, confectionery, and even a gas station. Above location adapted from an old atlas. Interestingly, in 1936, when the county auditor appraised the value of the old store, the following notation was made on the property card: “Building contains machinery for bottling spring water.” During their final years the buildings sat empty and deteriorating, their historical significance forgotten. In about 1964, the Walker store and home were demolished. Today the site of Walker’s Store is a grassy lot at West 194th Street and Puritas Avenue.

You may have read in the previous issue of Kamm’s Corners Magazine that KCDC was considering the purchase of the former St. Mark Episcopal Church on Triskett Road for the purpose of establishing a neighborhood arts center for West Park. After substantial study of the building and the environment, KCDC decided not to move forward with the project. Numerous factors contributed to this decision, but chief among them was the high cost of repairing the roof and parking lot, as well as the cost of interior alterations to convert the use to an arts center. Additional factors included inadequate parking at the site for the various uses that were being considered. While this particular site was not deemed feasible, KCDC will continue to pursue arts programming in West Park, whether that means an owned facility or simply working with partners to bring programming to existing facilities. Stay tuned!

Romanian Festival Takes Place in Mid-August The women of St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral say, “Eat your sarmale!” That’s stuffed cabbage in Romanian, and they will be cooking up more than 5,000 of them! As a result, there will be plenty for everyone during the 8th Annual St. Mary Romanian Festival being held Friday through Sunday, August 16 to 18. Of course, many other tasty treats will be offered at the festival, including the ever-popular mititei (Romania’s mighty burgers), mamaliga cu branza, which is polenta baked with sour cream and cheese (absolutely delicious!), homemade sausage and sauerkraut, chicken paprikash, roasted chicken, and home-baked pastries that are scrumptious. St. Mary’s promises you will not find a bigger (or more delicious) selection anywhere else in Cleveland! The Romanian version of elephant ears cannot be beat! Romania’s award-winning wines and beer are also on the menu.

The festival offers live music all weekend in addition to dancers high-stepping it onstage. Pictured is Doina Romanian Dance Ensemble.

Plan to enjoy the festivities at St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral, 3256 Warren Road. Festival Hours: Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. For further information call 216941-5550 or visit smroc.org.

Simon Says News from City Council Candidate Jonathan Simon Dear Friends and Neighbors, This November we will choose a path forward for the future of West Park and Cleveland. Our community has some amazing assets – great families, great homes and successful businesses. But we also face some very serious challenges. As the housing market recovers, many of our neighbors are faced with a difficult question – should they stay in West Park, or leave for the suburbs? I’ve always wanted West Park to remain home to as many Cops, Firefighters and other city employees as possible. Unlike my opponent, I believe that we should retain these great public servants by making our community competitive with the suburbs – not by making it illegal for them to leave. West Park has home values and incomes that compare against very successful suburbs, and we also have suburbanlevel tax rates. While we pay the highest tax burden in Cleveland the same or more than many suburbs – our city services simply do not compete against those other communities. Earlier this year, KCDC asked you, the West Park community, to share your biggest concerns. You highlighted the basic city services that we aren’t receiving today: road maintenance, snow removal, leaf pickup and police patrols.

These are standard services that we are paying for, but we aren’t getting. Our current leadership has not taken serious action on these issues. Rocky River Drive is falling apart just 10 years after being resurfaced, and West Park was one of the most mentioned neighborhoods in the Plain Dealer’s “Road Rant” column. This is unacceptable. While I was glad to hear about the pending work at Impett Park and Gunning Recreation Center – the work at Impett has been on the books since at least 2009, was planned to be complete in 2011. Now it isn’t expected until 2014. In the 2013 Five Year Capital Improvement Plan – our ward will receive one of the lowest investments in the city. That means we will get 25% less money than the average ward – and 60 times less than Downtown. West Park Deserves Better! If you agree that we can do better and vote for me as your Councilman, I will fight to elevate West Park to a suburban standard of excellence. I will demand that we receive resources in proportion to the amount we pay – and I will not accept “no” as an answer. I am asking for your support this November to bring West Park the better city services that we are paying for and deserve. Thank you –

Jonathan Simon
