Madeira Wine Festival The Madeira Wine Festival is one of the island’s main tourist attractions that pays tribute to this precious nectar and to its undeniable socioeconomic significance. Taking place during the grape harvest in late August, early September, this event aims to recreate the old traditions of Madeirans related to viticulture labour routines. This event, which has been commemorated since the late seventies of the last century, this year will take place from August 28th to September 11th in downtown Funchal – Avenida Arriaga and Praça do Povo. On September 10th all attentions are focused on Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, where the Wine Harvest Festival takes place, in a typical Madeiran Quinta, followed by an ethnographic parade with the participation of a large number of folklore and ethnography groups. After the parade, the treading of the grapes is re-enacted - using a traditional press – a moment largely enjoyed by locals and visitors, in a festive atmosphere with lots of musical entertainment and regional cuisine. The Madeira Ethnographic Museum was “housed” in an old manor-house of the 17th century, then transformed into an industrial unit in the 18th century - the “Antiga Fábrica de Aguardente da Ribeira Brava” (“Old Brandy Factory), having recovered the building and the technological equipment’s that state its architectural and industrial heritage. Columbus Festival The Columbus Festival is based on the historical reenactment of the period when the famous merchant lived in Porto Santo Island, recalling his stay in Madeira Islands. The festival takes place from September 15th to the 17th, in the city of Vila Baleira, and features a set of activities that seek to recall the epic period of Portuguese Discoveries. The event includes the disembarking of Christopher Columbus, a sixteenth-century market with diversified gastronomy, crafts, street performances, circus arts, theatrical performances and staging of peace and war ordeals, quite common at the time, games of skill, artillery training, acrobatics and juggling, lots of music and exotic dances, ensuring permanent entertainment. “EVA - Once Upon a Time in the Atlantic” Between the 23rd and the 25th of September, Madeira welcomes its first international storytelling festival. “EVA - Once Upon a Time in the Atlantic” is organized by the Associação Xarabanda with the special support of the Direção Regional da Cultura, and under the artistic direction of the well-known Madeiran storyteller Sofia Maul, bringing to the island narrators from various regions to attract and delight the island’s audience, who truly enjoys a very good story. With four sessions of short stories, two for family audiences: on Saturday, the 24th, and on Sunday, the 25th, both in the afternoon; and two evenings specially targeted to adults, on Friday and Saturday night. The guests of EVA’s first edition, beyond Sofia Maul, are Claudia Fonseca (Brazil), Rodolfo Castro (Argentina), Soledad Felloza (Uruguay/Galicia) and Valter Peres (Portugal – Terceira Island/Azores).
