the trip

The northern coast and islands of Madagascar evoke a classic tropical island paradise, with white coral beaches, clear blue waters and the scent of exotic spices on the breeze. The rainforests are teeming with endemic wildlife and the coral reefs offshore are equally full of life and colour. The north coast and islands of Madagascar are perfect for an active yet relaxing experience. With walks traversing the beaches, headlands and historic fortifications of the craggy coast plus lemurs, lakes and waterfalls of the forested hinterland to discover, the itinerary provides a comprehensive insight into this little‑visited section of the island. A boat journey takes us to the ‘scented island’ of Nosy Be, where we enjoy a couple of nights at leisure. The fragrances of ylang ylang, frangipani, vanilla and cinnamon drift on the breeze as travellers can enjoy snorkelling, experience the vibrant island life or simply relax and leave the rest of the world behind.

responsible travel The environments we travel through are fragile. It is our responsibility as visitors to minimise the impact of our presence. World Expeditions were the proud recipients of the inaugural Australian National Travel Industry’s Environmental Achievement award for our Responsible Travel Guidebook. This detailed guide to responsible and sustainable travel is provided to all World Expeditions clients before they travel. Please ask your consultant if you have not received your copy of our award winning book. Alternatively, you may like to download a copy from our website www.worldexpeditions.com

adventure travel By its very nature adventure travel involves an element of the unexpected. In remote and developing countries do not expect standards you are used to at home. Remote areas are sometimes unpredictable and itineraries may be altered. To get the most out of your adventure it is important that you are flexible, positive and eager to take on all the challenges that arise. If you are uncertain about your suitability for this trip we recommend that you speak with your consultant or travel agent.

important note These trip notes represent the most current information for this itinerary, and may supersede any information in the current brochure, including but not limited to the itinerary and price. The itinerary should be seen as a guide only. This itinerary may change at any time due to inclement weather, forces of nature and other circumstances beyond our control.

DAY 8 In Nosy Be, trip concludes Trip arrangements end this morning after breakfast at your hotel on Nosy Be. Airport departure transfers can be arranged at additional cost if required. meals: B This itinerary is subject to change with any change in Community regulations as well as Governmental changes and natural circumstances beyond our control.

joining instructions

Complete joining instructions will be included with your final documentation approximately 3 weeks prior to your departure If you are arriving in Diego Suarez (also known as Antsiranana) on Day 1 you will be met at the airport and transferred to the group hotel for overnight. Please ensure that your reservations consultant is aware of your arrival details so that these can be passed on to our local operator. If arriving prior to Day 1 please make your own way to the group hotel or we can assist with a private transfer (additional cost applies). The airports in Madagascar are not of the same standard as most western airports and may seem chaotic on your first visit. Arrival procedures may be slow but are generally straightforward (ie. Health check; Visa payment; Police check & Passport control; Customs). As always when you travel, patience may be needed.

country information

Madagascar the fourth largest island on Earth, 1600km long and almost 600km wide is a continental fragment of Africa that separated from the continent almost 90 million years ago. This separation has allowed the evolution of a distinctive flora and fauna. The Lemurs of Madagascar are a primitive form of primate that have adapted to many different habitats across the island. The island itself is geologically diverse, with granite and metamorphic rocks making up the central highlands. The west coast is limestone that has been uplifted as tectonic forces slowly tilt the island to the east. This limestone has been eroded in to the distinctive razor‑sharp pinnacles of the Tsingy. Elsewhere, the red laterite soils ensure a richly coloured landscape, Madagascar becoming known as the “Great Red Island”. The people are as unique as their land, the Malagasy are an island people, unrelated to the peoples of mainland Africa. They are descended from Indonesian and Malay seafarers who arrived from across the Indian Ocean over 2000 years ago. The Asian origins of the people are evident in the agriculture, seafaring traditions and way of life.

climate

Madagascar is a large island in mainly tropical latitude; however it can seem both wetter and cooler than expected. Much of Madagascar is highland and during the winter months (May – October) it can get quite chilly and windy at times in the highlands. The coast enjoys a tropical climate and winter offers clear skies and warm conditions. The summer months (Nov – March) can bring the rains to the lowlands, making travel difficult in some areas.

dietary requirements

Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please

ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut‑free or allergen‑free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life‑threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self‑administering these medications.

accommodation on the trip

Accommodation In selecting hotels and guesthouses, our foremost criteria are cleanliness and comfort, but outside of the capital the accommodation is very rustic. Accommodation is in 2 star hotels on a twinshare basis, unless a single supplement has been paid in advance. It is possible to upgrade to 3 star hotels at additional cost, subject to availability ‑ ask your Travel Consultant for details. Most properties have ensuite bathrooms, while the permanent campsite at Ankarana Park has shared ablutions. Permanent Camp Set‑up While camping in Ankarana Park, all equipment is provided. Two person tents are supplied, as are mattresses and bed linen. The campsites and facilities are basic but allow a wilderness experience in these special environments. There is a communal dining area and shared ablution facilities.

what you carry

A daypack with your personal belongings for the day (i.e. rainjacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip balm etc).

wildlife

The wilderness areas of Africa are populated by large numbers of wild and potentially dangerous animals. The trip aims to view these animals in their natural habitat, uncontrolled by fences. Your experienced guides will make every effort to ensure the safety of the group at all times. Please be aware that all safari travel, including vehicle safaris in the proximity of wild animals is never entirely without risk. By travelling into wild areas in search of wild animals, all participants accept that they are choosing an adventure that includes an element of risk and this is an inherent aspect of the enjoyment of this style of travel.

vehicles & safety

During the course of your trip, we will use a variety of vehicles, all of which are fit for purpose and the conditions encountered. It should be noted that laws governing transportation safety may differ from those in your home country and on occasion some vehicles may not have seat belts fitted. While game viewing within a national park could be one example, public bus transfers or specialised transport such as ‘tuk‑tuk’s’ could be another. Where seat belts are not provided we strongly recommend that you hold tight to a fixed part of the vehicle at all times.

what’s not included Domestic flights: Antananarivo /Diego Suarez ‑ Nosy Be / Antananarivo 3 star hotel upgrade International flights and airport taxes
