The United Way for Kids program will be providing free warm coats, jackets and snowsuits to Winnipeg children and families again this year. For ordering coats, if they are needed, parents may call the school parent room at 204-582-5514 and place orders which can then be picked up at the school. Machray Dental Clinic Many of the Machray School students now have strong and healthy teeth. Healthy teeth are important for smiling, sound pronunciation, biting, chewing and self esteem. Our goal is to continuously improve the dental health of the Machray School students. The students benefit from having one of the lowest cavity rates in the City of Winnipeg. Less than 5% of students have visible cavities. Being cavity free really is a possibility-especially if you are a student at Machray School this year! If you have not yet signed a consent form for this year, you can call the school office or the clinic at 940-2090, and we can send you one. Returning students from last year will also need to fill out a new form to continue services at the dental clinic.

Ms. Lingat’s Nursery/Kindergarten Classes NEWS FROM THE NURSERY/KINDERGARTEN CLASS We started our school year with flying colors! The “cryers” only lasted for the first week of September. On the second week, the little ones became comfortable and excited! They were even saying “bye” to mom and told them to go. Some parents were teary eyed and excited about the first days of their nursery “babies”. And here comes, October! Our students are now aware of the classroom routines and rules. We started our names identification and the letters in their first names. We are also learning what our last names are, regardless how long and hyphenated it is. The students are also learning the sounds and letters of the alphabet. We are doing a variety of activities to make this learning fun and effective. They are also learning how to print their names. There are puzzles, play dough, sand box, painting, coloring, cutting, pasting and many more that we try to do and accomplish every day. We are also learning counting and building sets. And the most exciting part being in Nursery/Kindergarten is about sharing and taking turns. By the end of our first week, our students learned how to stay in the line, sit still, raising hands when speaking, using kind words, like please and thank you and many more. The coming months will be very fruitful and fun! There would be a number of different things we are going to try and do. I cannot wait for these students to shine and learn different things everyday!

We have been watching and learning about 'Be Cool.' 'Be Cool' helps us learn how to solve a problem the right way, with things like teasing and bullies. Chester the cat shows us how to be cool. Don't be cold or hot, just be cool. Being cold means being sad and crying when something happens. Being hot means getting angry, stomping around and walking away. Being cool means you take a deep breath to calm down, before you try to solve the problem.

In Room 133 we learned about seasonal changes through writing and art. We were inspired by the land art of Andy Goldsworthy when we created our “Fall Art”. We have also started our Poetry Journals and your children are showing great enthusiasm for writing.

A very important part of our school day in Room 135 starts with Daily 5. Daily 5 is part of our Balanced Literacy Program which has five components: reading to self, reading to someone, listening to reading, word work and writing. The students have done a fantastic job learning to choose good fit books, staying in one spot, and getting started right away. With daily practice we are building our stamina. Daily 5 is helping us become better readers and writers. Also, it is helping us become independent learners which helps us solve problems more effectively. The children have really enjoyed doing Daily 5 and are continuing to work hard at it!

In our classroom we have been studying Rocks and Minerals. We learned that rocks are made up mostly of minerals and these minerals grow into crystals. We wanted to find out how they grow, so we made them during a science experiment. Below, you will see the scientific method that we used to try and grow crystals: Making Crystals Purpose: We wanted find out how to make crystals. Hypothesis: We think salt will stick to the string and make crystals. Materials: salt, string, kettle, measuring cup, hot water, a glass jar, a pencil, a teaspoon, a wooden spoon, measuring spoons Method: We We We We

boiled the water and poured it into a measuring cup. We measured ½ cup of hot water. measured four teaspoons of salt and stirred. cut a short length of string and tied it to a pencil. took the pencil and rested it over top the opening of the jar. The string fell into the hot salt water.

Results: We are waiting patiently for the crystals to grow, it will take seven days. Conclusion: We learned that you will ruin the experiment if you touch, move or flip the pencil. This is the second time we are doing the experiment; we will let you know the results. Thoughtfully Written By: Mya, Sokjakriya, Dycen and Oryan

Mrs. Visscher’s Class The students in room 121 have started an inquiry on light. We looked at objects that show different types of light and came up with questions. We also brainstormed different light words to use in our poems on light. Then, we painted a picture to match our poems. For social studies we are studying northern communities around the world . We are starting with Canada's north. We all picked an northern animal to research . In math we are learning how to build a number using addition and subtraction number sentences. We are also learning about multiplication, graphing and fractions. For language arts we are learning how to work in guided reading groups and about different types of character personalities.

We have a baby visiting our classroom this year. Her name is Briar Rose. We are doing Roots of Empathy. Roots of Empathy is a program where a baby visits a classroom, and we learn about babies and feelings. We are proud and happy to get to see her grow. We are making a book and CD for her. We are becoming independent during Read to Self. We built our reading stamina up to 45 minutes! We set a goal and accomplished it! Read to Self is a part of the daily 5 structure. We are now working on building writing stamina during Work on Writing. We are doing a light unit in science. We have been learning about natural and artificial light sources, and we brainstormed different light sources that we see in the school and community. We are also learning about the properties of light. We need light to survive on earth!

Mr. Polinuk’s Class

Grade 5/6

In class we are working on building our stamina in reading and writing. We set our goals and Mr. Polinuk times us on work on writing and reading. In reading, our goal is 25 minutes, and work on writing is 6 minutes. We practice building our stamina by putting our pen on the paper and start to write right away. If we are unsure of what to write, we write “I don’t know” until a thought comes to mind. We use pen so we can cross out our thoughts that we made up and continue to focus on our writing. In art Mr. Polinuk and Miss Rallison decided for us to make self portraits using paint and clay. We ran our papers under water for 30 seconds and started painting with watercolours. This happened after we used pencils, pastels, rulers, and mirrors to help us make our portrait look more realistic. We worked with clay to build our portrait and used tools to help add detail to our portrait. We even learned about Mr. Polinuk. We learned that Mr. Polinuk is afraid of snakes and he really doesn’t like mayonnaise. Page 6

Goodbye Delicious Candy! Here are some of the highlights for room 138 from September and October. In September, we went to Springfield, Manitoba to plant 500 trees with Qualico and the Manitoba Forestry Association. We learnt many wonderful things, for example, how to identify different kinds of trees by their leaves, and how to check the age of a tree without cutting it down. In October, being privileged students of grade 5/6 we had the opportunity to train the students of Machray School about the proper use about the common areas in our school. And finally, we learned how to use decimal points in math by using differently shaped blocks. Each block was worth a certain amount of money, and we had to build a 2D design that was worth a certain amount of money. Mrs. Campanelli will be in our Classroom to celebrate Halloween and will teach us for two weeks, while Ms. Dhalla is in India. Please come join us for our Remembrance Day assembly on November 8th 2013. We hope you can join us.

Mrs. McLaren’s Class We have been working very hard! Mrs. M is always giving us problems to solve like how can we transport letters from BC to MB! We do lots of math. We count collections and learn tips to make math easier. We are learning to count money. Math games like RAW, Tens, and UNO are fun. (Mrs. M doesn’t think we know we can play them because we learn.) We really like science because we like experiments. We did magic by turning purple cabbage juice different colors. (Actually, we tested acids and bases.) We learned about solid, liquid, and gas. We made rockets. Don’t fly in a balloon filled with hydrogen gas because hydrogen explodes! We are learning to ask questions when we read. Raz-kids helps AND you can even do it at home if you have a computer. We ALL had COURAGE because we had to do the October assembly with room 136. MRS. M and Mr. P were very proud of us for showing courage to get up to talk. It was great! Back to learning! Machray School
